To set up a DayZ mod key, stop the server, copy every .bikey file from the mod’s Keys/ or keys/ folder into the dedicated server’s root keys/ folder, load the mod with the correct startup parameter, and restart. Keep signature verification enabled—production guidance recommends verifySignatures = 2.
The key is only one part of the installation. The server and each connecting client must use the same signed mod build, and the mod must be loaded with the parameter that matches its purpose. A missing, stale, or misplaced key commonly produces “Signature check failed” or “Player kicked: Modified data.”
What a DayZ mod key does
DayZ mods are distributed as files that the game can verify. The mod’s PBO files are normally stored in its addons/ directory. A public key with the .bikey extension lets the dedicated server validate signatures attached to those PBO files. Bohemia Interactive Community describes the Keys folder as containing the “public .bikey used to sign the .pbo files (required for client-server signature verification)” in its DayZ: Modding Structure documentation.
When a client connects, the server checks the signed content against the trusted keys in its own keys/ directory. The client therefore needs the same mod content and signatures that the server expects; merely placing a key in the mod’s own folder is not enough.

A mod can contain more than one public key. Copying only the first file you see can leave some of its PBOs unverifiable.
What you need before changing files
- Administrative access to the dedicated DayZ server’s installation directory, including the server-root
keys/folder. - The complete mod folder, downloaded or installed from the source used by your clients.
- The mod’s current
addons/andKeys/(or lowercasekeys/) directories. - Access to the server startup command or control panel fields for
-mod,-serverMod, and-config. - A maintenance window in which the server can be stopped and restarted.
Use the same mod release on the server and clients. If a mod author rotates signing keys in an update, an old key can remain in the server directory while the current key is missing, so treat keys as versioned deployment files rather than permanent one-time setup.

Understand the directory layout
A normal installation has a mod directory separate from the dedicated server’s root. The important locations look like this:

└─ ...The case of Keys versus keys can vary by mod package. The destination used for server verification is the dedicated server’s root DayZServer/keys/ directory. Do not rely on leaving the public key only under @ModName/Keys/.

Install the keys step by step
1. Install or download the mod
Obtain the complete mod directory, not just an individual PBO. Confirm that it contains an addons/ directory and look for Keys/ or keys/. If the package has no key directory, do not invent a key or copy a private signing file; check the mod’s distribution and installation instructions.
2. Stop the DayZ server
Stop the dedicated server before editing its files. Updating keys while the process is running can leave the installation using a mixture of old and new files, and it makes it harder to know which configuration was actually tested. Wait until the server process has exited before copying anything.

3. Identify every public key
Open the mod’s key directory and list all files whose names end in .bikey. Some releases contain multiple public keys because different PBO groups were signed separately. Copy all of those files, preserving their filenames. Do not select only the file whose name most closely matches the mod folder.
4. Copy the keys to the server root
Copy the complete set of .bikey files into DayZServer/keys/. Keep an existing vanilla dayz.bikey when it is already there; the mod keys are additional trusted keys, not replacements for the base game key.

After copying, verify the destination rather than assuming the file operation succeeded. The destination should contain the newly copied files alongside any keys already used by the server. A key nested under DayZServer/@ModName/keys/ or under a client’s Workshop cache is not a substitute for the server-root copy.
5. Put the mod files where the startup command expects them
Keep the mod directory in the location referenced by the server’s launch configuration. A key does not load a mod by itself: the server still needs the mod’s PBO files and the appropriate startup parameter. If you move or rename the mod folder, update the launch parameter at the same time.
6. Choose the correct startup parameter
Use -mod for a mod whose content must be loaded by connecting clients. Use -serverMod for a server-only mod whose files are not intended to be loaded by clients. Select the server configuration file with -config.

A representative launch segment is -mod=@ModName -serverMod=@ServerOnlyMod -config=serverDZ.cfg. Replace the folder names with the exact directories on your installation, and keep each parameter in the syntax required by the launcher or hosting control panel you use. If a mod is client-visible, putting it only in -serverMod will not make the clients load it.

7. Enable strict signature verification
In the server configuration, keep signature verification enabled. The DayZ-Modding-Wiki access-control guidance states: “Always use verifySignatures = 2 on production servers.” With this setting, the server checks client-loaded content against trusted public keys in its keys/ directory. A missing matching key or an invalid signature can cause the connection to be rejected.
Do not lower enforcement merely to make an error disappear on a production server. A permissive setting may hide a deployment problem and permits content that has not passed the server’s trust check. Fix the key, mod version, or startup configuration instead.
8. Restart and test
Start the server after the files and parameters are in place. Connect with a client that has the exact same version of every mod listed under -mod. Test a normal connection and, if possible, a second connection after a clean client restart. A successful connection confirms that the server can find the mod, load its PBOs, and match the required signatures.
Diagnose signature and modified-data errors
The wording of a kick message is useful, but the underlying causes overlap. Work through the checks below in order, changing one variable at a time.

“Signature check failed”
- Open the mod’s current
Keys/orkeys/folder and compare its complete list of.bikeyfiles with the server’s rootDayZServer/keys/directory. - Copy every missing key. A multi-key mod can fail even when one correctly named key is present.
- Confirm that the key came from the exact mod build installed on the server and client. A similarly named key from an older release is not an equivalent replacement.
- Check that the signed PBOs still have their accompanying
.bisignfiles and that the mod directory was not partially overwritten during an update.
“Player kicked: Modified data”
- Compare the client’s mod version and files with the server’s version. Updating only one side can change the PBO signatures.
- Confirm that the mod appears under the intended
-modparameter when clients must load it. A wrong parameter can produce a different set of files than the client expects. - Re-copy the current public keys after any mod update, then restart the server.
- Check for duplicate or stale mod folders in the launch path. The server may be loading one copy while the administrator is inspecting another.
The server starts but players cannot join
First verify that the server process is reading the startup command you edited. Control panels can store separate launch profiles, and a change made to an unused profile has no effect. Next, verify the selected -config file and confirm that verifySignatures remains set to 2. Finally, test with a client whose mod list exactly matches the client-visible entries in the server command.

Check the destination path character by character. The trusted directory is the server root’s keys/, not the mod’s internal key folder. Then check the filename and extension: the file must end in .bikey, not .biprivatekey or a text-document extension added by an operating system. If the mod was updated, obtain the key from the updated package rather than assuming the previous file is still valid.
Update and maintain keys safely
Routine mod update
- Stop the DayZ server.
- Update the mod directory to the intended release.
- Open the updated release’s
Keys/orkeys/directory. - Copy every current
.bikeyintoDayZServer/keys/, replacing obsolete files only when you have confirmed they are no longer needed by another installed mod. - Verify that the server launch parameter still points to the updated mod directory.
- Start the server and test with clients updated to the same release.
Mod authors can rotate signing keys. Therefore, a mod directory that updates through a junction or symlink may receive new PBOs automatically while the server’s separate root key directory remains unchanged. Even when the mod path updates in place, inspect and refresh the keys after every update.
Keep a simple deployment record
Record the mod folder name, the date it was installed, and the names of the .bikey files copied. This makes it easier to identify a stale key after a later update and prevents accidental deletion of a key still required by another mod. Never record or distribute a .biprivatekey; it is signing material for the author, not an administrator credential.

Pre-launch checklist
- The server is stopped while files are changed.
- The mod folder contains the intended release and its signed PBO files.
- Every
.bikeyin the mod’s key directory is present inDayZServer/keys/. - No
.biprivatekeyhas been copied to the server. - The mod is assigned to
-modor-serverModaccording to whether clients must load it. - The intended configuration file is selected with
-config. verifySignatures = 2is enabled for production use.- Clients have the same signed mod versions as the server.
- The server has been restarted after the key and startup changes.
- A connection test completes without a signature or modified-data kick.
Access requirements when you do not administer the machine directly
Key installation requires access to the server root and to the startup configuration. A hosting control panel or managed service is suitable only if it exposes a file manager or FTP/SFTP access for DayZServer/keys/, a way to upload the mod files, and controls for changing startup parameters and restarting the process. If those controls are unavailable, ask the administrator to perform the copy and restart; placing keys on your local computer cannot change the server’s trust store.
