The game is officially titled Nintendo Switch Sports; “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort” is not the title used in Nintendo’s support and game materials. To play with people sharing one console, start the game in TV mode, choose Play Locally, select the participating users and controller arrangement, then choose a sport. For nearby groups using more than one console, use the separate LAN Play mode with a wired network.

This guide covers both setups, the controller combinations each sport may require, the optional Soccer Leg Strap, equipment limits, and the most common setup problems.

Choose the right kind of local multiplayer

Nintendo Switch Sports has two different ways to play with people in the same place:

Setup Consoles Network equipment Players How it starts
Same-console local play One Nintendo Switch Not required Depends on the sport and supported controller arrangement Play Locally from the game menu
LAN Play Up to four consoles, according to Nintendo Support Every console connected by Ethernet to the same wired router; adapters or a network switch may be needed Up to two players on each console, with the simultaneous total depending on the sport Hidden LAN Play option reached from Play with Friends

Use same-console play for a household sharing one screen. LAN Play is for a larger gathering where each console has its own display and wired network connection. Ordinary local play does not require Ethernet, a router, or a second console.

What you need before starting

Console and display

Nintendo Switch Sports must be used in TV mode. Nintendo states that the game does not support Handheld Mode, so plan to use a console in its dock with a television or another compatible external display. For LAN Play, each participating console needs its own display and dock setup so its players can see and use that system.

Controllers

The supported arrangement depends on the sport. Nintendo lists paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, and Joy-Con with a Leg Strap among the supported play styles. Do not assume that one controller layout works for every sport. The game will show the required arrangement during setup.

Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with Nintendo Switch Sports. If you have several players, check the Joy-Con you already own against the sport you intend to play before buying anything. Nintendo notes that additional accessories may be needed for multiplayer, but no single extra accessory is a universal requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Optional Soccer accessory

The Leg Strap is relevant to some Soccer play, not to multiplayer in general. Nintendo identifies Soccer’s two-player Shoot-Out mode as one use. Joy-Con 2 controllers are not compatible with the Leg Strap. If you are using a compatible original Joy-Con and want Leg-Strap Mode, select it from the controller-hold screen by pressing +.

How do you play Nintendo Switch Sports locally with friends?

These steps are for several people sharing one console and one display.

  1. Attach the console to its dock and switch the television to the dock’s input. Do not try to start this setup in Handheld Mode; the game does not support it.
  2. Start Nintendo Switch Sports and wait for the title or main menu.
  3. Select Play Locally.
  4. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose the participating user or users. Each person should select the user profile the game requests on that console.
  5. When prompted, arrange the controllers for the selected sport. The prompt may ask for paired Joy-Con, one Joy-Con per player, or another supported arrangement.
  6. Select the sport. Continue through that sport’s prompts, including any mode or player-selection screens.
  7. Have every player move to a safe position with enough room to swing a Joy-Con. Keep the wrist strap attached when using a Joy-Con in a motion-controlled activity.

The exact number of people who can participate at once is sport-dependent. The fact that one sport accepts a particular controller arrangement does not establish the same player count for another sport.

Changing the Soccer controller mode

For Soccer local play, the controller-hold screen can offer the Leg-Strap Mode setting. If you want the Leg Strap option, press + on that screen and select the appropriate mode. This setting is specific to Soccer; it is not a requirement for the other sports.

Plan a same-console session before buying anything

The fastest way to avoid a failed setup is to decide the sport and mode before counting controllers. “Local multiplayer” does not identify one universal hardware requirement. A sport may ask for paired Joy-Con, a single Joy-Con, or a Joy-Con and Leg Strap, and the number of simultaneous participants can change with the sport or mode.

  1. Write down the active players. Count only people who will play at the same time on this console. Spectators do not need a controller.
  2. Choose the activity. Open the game and read the controller-hold prompt for the sport and mode you plan to use. Do not use the requirement shown for one activity to plan another.
  3. Inventory your Joy-Con. Note how many usable controllers you have and whether they are paired, individual units. Pro Controllers cannot substitute for supported Joy-Con.
  4. Check the special case. If the plan is Soccer Shoot-Out or another supported Leg-Strap mode, set aside a compatible original Joy-Con and the optional strap. A Joy-Con 2 controller cannot be used with that strap.
  5. Only then fill the gap. Borrow or purchase additional Joy-Con or the optional strap only when the on-screen arrangement cannot be met with what you own.

This order also helps with mixed groups. You can let some people play while others rotate in, rather than assuming that every person at the gathering must have a controller immediately.

LAN Play planning for a group event

Multi-console play has more preparation than same-console play because every station must be ready before the host creates the room. Nintendo’s documented ceiling is four consoles and two players on each console. That is a network and per-console limit, not a promise that every sport supports all of those players simultaneously.

Make a physical checklist

  • One copy of Nintendo Switch Sports on each participating console.
  • One dock and external display for each console.
  • One Ethernet connection from each console to the same wired router.
  • Compatible Ethernet adapters if a console or dock does not provide the needed port.
  • A network switch if the router does not have enough open Ethernet ports.
  • Enough supported Joy-Con for one or two players at each station, based on the selected sport.
  • Power outlets and cables positioned so no Ethernet or power lead crosses a player’s movement area.

The final two items are easy to overlook. A room can satisfy the four-console limit and still fail because one station lacks a display, a controller arrangement, or a free wired port. Ordinary Play Locally sessions do not need any of this LAN equipment.

Assign a host and test in order

Choose the host console before people begin. Start the LAN sequence on every console, but have only the host select Make a New Room. Other consoles should wait for that room and use Join Room. If a second console attempts to join before the host has created the room, there is nothing for it to select.

After each console appears in the group, verify its local players and controller prompt before the host starts. Fixing a controller or display problem at this stage is easier than restarting after the group has entered a sport. When the roster is complete, the host chooses Play with this group!, and everyone selects an available sport together.

Same-console play versus LAN Play: which should you use?

Question Play Locally LAN Play
How many consoles? One Up to four, according to Nintendo Support
Does each console need a screen? No; everyone uses the same display Yes; each docked console needs a display
Is a router required? No Yes, a shared wired router
Are Ethernet cables required? No Yes; adapters or a network switch may be needed for available ports
How do players enter? Play Locally Play with Friends, then the hidden LAN Play menu
Players per console Determined by the sport and controller support Up to two players per console; simultaneous total is sport-dependent
Room host? No separate room One console selects Make a New Room; others select Join Room

If everyone can comfortably share one screen and the sport supports the desired arrangement, Play Locally is the simpler choice. Choose LAN Play only when you have multiple consoles, displays, and the wired equipment required for the group.

How to decide whether you need extra Joy-Con

Use this decision process before purchasing accessories:

  1. Count the people who will play at the same time on one console.
  2. Choose the sport and mode first. Its prompt determines whether players need paired Joy-Con, individual Joy-Con, or another supported arrangement.
  3. Compare that requirement with the Joy-Con you already have.
  4. Buy or borrow additional Joy-Con only if the displayed arrangement cannot be met.
  5. If the planned activity is Soccer Shoot-Out or another Leg-Strap mode, verify that you have a compatible original Joy-Con and the optional Leg Strap. Do not plan to use a Joy-Con 2 controller with that strap.

This approach avoids treating the Leg Strap as a general multiplayer requirement and avoids buying controllers before you know the sport’s layout.

Common setup pitfalls to avoid

  • Using the wrong menu: Play Locally is for one console. Play with Friends is the starting point for the separate LAN sequence.
  • Trying handheld mode: The game requires TV mode, so a console must be docked and connected to a display.
  • Assuming four consoles means four-player support everywhere: The LAN ceiling and the sport’s simultaneous participant limit are different constraints.
  • Buying a Pro Controller: Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible with this game.
  • Making the Leg Strap mandatory: It is optional and tied to supported Soccer play, including the two-player Shoot-Out use Nintendo describes.
  • Mixing controller generations for Soccer: Joy-Con 2 is not compatible with the Leg Strap.
  • Using Wi-Fi for the documented LAN setup: Nintendo’s LAN instructions call for Ethernet connections to the same wired router.
  • Forgetting the host step: Other consoles cannot join until one console has made a new room.

Troubleshooting local multiplayer

The game will not let me start in handheld mode

That behavior is expected. Nintendo Switch Sports does not support Handheld Mode. Dock the console, connect a display, and restart the setup from the TV-mode menu.

I cannot find Play Locally

Return to the game’s main or title menu and look for Play Locally. Do not use Play with Friends unless you are setting up LAN Play with multiple consoles. If the menu still differs, exit to the title screen and start the local flow again.

The controller prompt does not match my controllers

Controller support varies by sport. Follow the arrangement shown on screen rather than assuming every activity accepts the same number or type of Joy-Con. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible, so replace one with a supported Joy-Con arrangement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Soccer does not show the Leg-Strap option

The Leg-Strap Mode control appears on the controller-hold screen. Press + there to switch modes. Confirm that you are using a compatible Joy-Con; Joy-Con 2 controllers do not work with the Leg Strap. The strap is optional and only applies to supported Soccer play.

A second console cannot see the LAN room

Check the LAN-specific sequence on every console: move the title-screen cursor to Play with Friends, hold L and R, then click and hold the Left Stick until LAN Play appears. Confirm that every console is docked, connected by Ethernet to the same router, and running the game. The host must choose Make a New Room before other consoles can choose Join Room.

We connected several consoles but cannot add more players

Nintendo’s LAN guidance allows up to four consoles and up to two players on each, but the selected sport may support fewer simultaneous participants. Choose a sport that accommodates the intended group or reduce the active players for that activity.

We expected Wi-Fi to work for LAN Play

The documented LAN setup uses a wired router and Ethernet connections. A shared wireless network is not the same configuration. Add the required Ethernet adapters or network switch and connect each console by cable before creating the room.

Safety and room setup for motion play

  • Clear furniture, pets, and other people from each player’s swing area.
  • Use the Joy-Con wrist strap and tighten it before starting motion-based play.
  • Keep enough distance between players when several people share one screen.
  • For LAN Play, check every console’s controller and display before the host starts the group.
  • Do not force a controller layout that the sport’s prompt does not support.
  • Route Ethernet and power cables away from walking and swinging paths.
  • Pause and rearrange the room if players are drifting closer together during a match.

What the “Sports Resort” wording means

Nintendo’s reviewed official materials identify the product as Nintendo Switch Sports, not “Nintendo Switch Sports Resort.” Search results and informal descriptions may add “Resort,” but the setup labels you need to follow in the game are Play Locally, Play with Friends, and LAN Play. Using the canonical title when looking for support, updates, or accessories will make it easier to find the correct instructions.

How many consoles can join LAN Play?

Nintendo Support documents up to four consoles, with up to two players on each console. The number who can play simultaneously still depends on the selected sport.

Can I use a Nintendo Switch Pro Controller?

No. Nintendo Switch Pro Controllers are not compatible. Use the Joy-Con arrangement shown by the sport’s controller prompt.

Is the Soccer Leg Strap required for multiplayer?

No. It is optional and relevant only to supported Soccer play, including the two-player Shoot-Out use Nintendo describes. Press + on the Soccer controller-hold screen to switch to Leg-Strap Mode.

Can Joy-Con 2 be used with the Leg Strap?

No. Nintendo identifies Joy-Con 2 controllers as incompatible with the Leg Strap. Use a compatible original Joy-Con for a supported Leg-Strap mode.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t another console find our LAN room?

On every console, move the title-screen cursor to Play with Friends, hold L and R, then click and hold the Left Stick until LAN Play appears. Confirm all consoles are docked, connected by Ethernet to the same router, and running the game. The host must choose Make a New Room before others choose Join Room.

Does LAN Play use ordinary Wi-Fi?

Nintendo’s documented LAN setup uses Ethernet connections from every console to the same wired router. You may need Ethernet adapters or a network switch for the available ports.

Do all sports support the same number of local players?

No. Controller arrangements and simultaneous participant limits vary by sport and mode. Use the on-screen prompt for the activity you intend to play rather than relying on another sport’s limit.

The Bottom Line

For one-screen multiplayer, dock the console, choose Play Locally, and follow the sport-specific controller prompts. For a larger nearby group, use LAN Play: up to four docked consoles connect by Ethernet to the same router, one host makes a room, and the others join it. Plan controllers around the chosen sport, treat the Soccer Leg Strap as optional, and remember that each sport sets its own simultaneous-player limit.
