To play BlazBlue: Central Fiction with someone else, first make sure you are using compatible editions: local versus is offline two-player play, while online options depend on the platform. Steam supports rollback netcode; Switch offers Ranked Match and Player Match rooms but no cross-platform play or online lobby; the official PlayStation guidance covers cross-play between PS3 and PS4 only.
Check the edition before you set up a match
The game’s multiplayer features are not identical across platforms. The Switch edition supports one to two offline players and two to eight online players in Network Mode, according to Arc System Works. Nintendo UK’s listing separately describes one to two players on one system and one to eight online; the listings use different labels for the online count, so treat the publisher’s Network Mode figure as applying to its described modes.
Arc System Works documents PS3 and PS4 cross-play, but that does not establish compatibility with Steam or Switch. On Steam, the documented update adds rollback netcode to online modes, but the cited material does not establish cross-play with other platforms.
How do I play local multiplayer in BlazBlue Centralfiction?
Nintendo Switch
Connect or pair one compatible controller for each player, launch the game, then choose its offline versus play. Nintendo UK states that “Multiplayer requires one compatible controller per player.” The Arc System Works Switch page lists the Nintendo Switch Pro Controller and REAL ARCADE Pro.V HAYABUSA for Nintendo Switch as separately sold supported options; neither is mandatory if you already have compatible controllers.

Steam and PC: assign a controller to each player
A Steam Community controller guide, updated in December 2024, says the game recognizes controllers in slots 1 and 2. Its steps are user-maintained guidance rather than an official Arc System Works setup manual:
- Connect both controllers, arcade sticks, or other intended input devices before starting the game.
- In Steam Library, open the game’s controller settings and enable Steam Input for BlazBlue: Central Fiction.
- Launch the game and open the Steam Overlay. In desktop mode, press Shift+Tab and select the controller icon. In Big Picture or Steam Deck mode, open controller settings using the controller/Home button.
- Reorder the devices so the intended player-one and player-two inputs occupy controller slots 1 and 2.
- Return to the title screen and enter offline versus play. The device that opens the title screen is the one that navigates the game menus.
The guide cautions against running other input-mapping tools alongside Steam Input because they may confuse controller handling. It does not establish a universal keyboard-plus-controller configuration, so that combination may depend on the individual setup.

Use the console’s controller-pairing controls, launch the game, and select its offline versus mode. The official PlayStation information reviewed describes network modes and cross-play, but does not document a specific local controller setup sequence.

How do I play online with a friend?
Steam
Arc System Works’ March 7, 2022 Steam update announcement says rollback netcode was implemented for all online modes. It also describes online improvements, including rematch options for Player Match and other matchmaking modes. Start the game’s online or network mode and choose the matchmaking or player-match option shown in its menus; the cited sources do not establish a current, authoritative click-by-click menu sequence.

Nintendo Switch: Ranked Match
Nintendo UK says online play requires a paid Nintendo Switch Online membership. For ranked play, the official Switch manual describes entering Ranked Match, optionally setting search criteria such as area, player level, and match completion rate, and waiting for an opponent. You can wait while playing other game modes. When a match is found, the opponent’s name appears at the lower right; press + to open the pause menu and begin. Use that menu to stop or pause Ranked Match entry.
Nintendo Switch: Player Match rooms
For a friend match or small group, create or enter a Player Match room and choose its room type. The manual lists these options:
Rank #4
- WIRELESS CONNECTIVITY: Get the freedom to game anywhere with a 30-foot wireless range, and without the hassle of wires.
- RECHARGEABLE BATTERY: Save money and never need to buy, or waste, batteries again.
- UP TO 40 HOURS OF BATTERY LIFE: Enjoy longer game play before needing to recharge.
- PRISMATIC LED LIGHTING: Customize the look of your controller to match your mood with the full color range and four lighting modes.
- MOTION-CONTROLS: Enhance your gaming experience to play the way the developer intended.
- Match/spectate: two players fight while other room members watch.
- Free-for-all: room members battle simultaneously without spectators.
- Training: two players train while others watch. Only player one can access the training menu and reset commands.
- Replay theater and team battle: additional listed room types for viewing replays or playing team battles.
The manual describes Player Match sessions for up to eight players. Arc System Works states that the Switch edition has no online lobby and does not cross-play with other platforms.

According to Arc System Works’ PlayStation information, PS3 and PS4 versions can play against each other. PS4 online play requires PS Plus. Player Match invitations work only between players on the same console model. To play a friend across PS3 and PS4, use Player Match search rather than the invitation feature.

Can Switch, PlayStation, and PC players play together?
The documented compatibility is limited to PS3 and PS4 cross-play. The Switch edition does not cross-play with other platforms, and the cited Steam update establishes rollback netcode—not cross-platform play. Do not assume that players on Steam, Switch, PS3, or PS4 can join one another unless the platform-specific game information confirms it.

The cited sources do not provide comparable current player counts, service-availability checks, or measured latency results, so they cannot support a ranking by population or connection quality.
