Install KWGT, place a KWGT widget from your Android launcher’s widget picker, then tap the empty widget to open KWGT’s editor and preset library. Most permission problems are feature-specific: file access supports templates and assets, location supports weather and astronomy fields, network access supports online data, and notification access supports music-player information. A widget that updates late or renders at the wrong size usually needs battery, background, or sizing changes rather than another permission.
What KWGT does and what you need
KWGT is the Kustom app for building and displaying customizable Android home-screen widgets. You can start with a preset, edit its layout and data, or build a widget from scratch. The base app can display custom widgets; the Google Play listing separately identifies Pro capabilities such as importing presets from SD storage and using external skins. Do not assume Pro is required for every custom widget. Check the current listing for the exact feature split on your device.
You need an Android phone or tablet with a launcher that supports widgets, KWGT installed from its official Google Play listing, and any preset pack or asset files you intend to use. Launcher names, Android versions, and manufacturer software change the wording and location of settings, so the paths below describe the operation rather than one universal menu label.

1. Install and open KWGT
- Install KWGT from the official Google Play listing.
- Open KWGT once so Android can finish creating its app folders and so you can review any access requests that appear.
- If you plan to use a preset pack, install that pack using the method supplied with the pack. Keep track of where its files are stored; a cleaner or optimization utility can later prevent KWGT from reading them.
2. Add a KWGT slot from the launcher
- Long-press an empty area of the Android home screen, or use your launcher’s equivalent widget command.
- Choose Widgets.
- Find KWGT and select a widget size. Launchers commonly offer several grid sizes; the chosen slot is only a starting rectangle.
- Drag the KWGT widget to the home screen and release it.
The exact gesture and the names in this picker vary by launcher. If KWGT is not listed, confirm that the app finished installing, search the widget picker, and restart the launcher before reinstalling anything.

3. Open the editor and choose content
- Tap the newly placed, usually empty widget. This opens KWGT’s editor or library.
- Select a preset if you have one, or choose the option to create a new widget.
- For a preset, browse the available packs and tap the design you want. For a new widget, add the required elements—such as text, images, shapes, progress indicators, or data fields—then edit their properties.
- Use KWGT’s save or apply control, then return to the home screen to view the result.
A preset can appear absent even when its pack is installed. In that case, check the selected Kustom storage location, verify that the preset files are actually present and readable, and look for a device-cleaning or optimization app that may be blocking the pack. Kustom’s FAQ identifies optimizer interference as a cause of skin files not being provided to the app.
4. Resize and position it
Long-press the finished widget and use your launcher’s resize handles. If the content is being scaled unexpectedly, check KWGT’s sizing preference before repeatedly changing the launcher rectangle. The sizing fix is covered below because Auto sizing and launcher grid information are separate from the widget’s design.
KWGT permissions: what each one is for
Kustom describes access by the feature that uses it. Grant only what the widget needs, but do not deny file access if you expect normal template, font, image, import, or export behavior. Android’s permission model and labels have changed over time; use KWGT’s app information page and the current Kustom documentation when your phone shows different wording.

Storage and files
File access is the foundation for KWGT’s cache, basic fonts and images, and template import/export. Android may not present the old word “storage”; the control can appear under Files, Photos and videos, or a similarly named permission depending on version and manufacturer. If a preset or image cannot be found, open Android Settings, go to KWGT’s app page, inspect its permissions and storage controls, and then confirm that the Kustom folder selected inside the app contains the files.

Location
Location is not automatically required for every widget. It is used for weather, street, city, country, sunrise, sunset, and related astronomy or location fields. If you do not need those fields, Kustom’s guide says location can be omitted. If you do need them but prefer not to grant live location, configure Manual or a fixed location in KWGT and then remove the Android location permission. A widget that still contains a live-location formula may remain blank until its data source is changed.
Network
Network access matters when KWGT must fetch weather or download custom content from the web. Denying it does not necessarily disable the entire app: Kustom states that unrelated functions can work offline. Expect online fields and downloads to fail until access is restored or the widget is changed to use local or manual data.
Wi-Fi SSID
Android treats the network name as location-sensitive information. Kustom’s common-issues documentation says location access is needed to show the Wi-Fi SSID and notes that Android 10 or later may require an ALL THE TIME setting instead of ONLY WHEN RUNNING. These labels and requirements are version-specific, so check the permission screen on your device rather than copying a path from another Android release.
Notification access for media widgets
Kustom says it detects a music player through the player’s presence in the notification area. Enable notification access only when a widget actually needs media-player data. If playback controls, track text, or album information are missing, check that the player posts a notification and that KWGT has the relevant notification access; granting unrelated permissions will not replace this feature-specific access.

Fix a KWGT widget that is stale or updates late
Remove battery and background restrictions
KWGT relies on background operation for tasks such as updating widgets. Android battery optimization and manufacturer-specific background controls can suspend that work. Open Android Settings, view KWGT’s app information, and inspect Battery, Background usage, App launch, or similarly named controls. Set KWGT to an unrestricted or not-optimized mode where your device offers that option, and disable any manufacturer rule that stops it when the screen is off.
Kustom also documents a persistent-notification option intended to support background operation. If your build exposes that setting, enable it only if battery behavior and notification clutter are acceptable to you. A persistent notification can help the system keep the app available, but it does not guarantee a particular refresh interval.
Understand Android’s refresh limits
Do not expect a complex widget to redraw every second. Kustom explains: “Android Widgets do not know if they are currently displayed or not.” Frequent updates are therefore limited to avoid unnecessary battery and performance costs, especially with complex presets. A delay that disappears after removing battery restrictions is a background-policy problem; a delay that remains under normal conditions may be the platform’s intentional update scheduling.
Check the preset itself
If only one design is stale, inspect its formulas, online data source, and complexity. A widget that depends on weather or web content also needs working network access. A widget showing a location field needs either usable location permission or a configured manual location. Fix the data source before changing launcher settings.

Fix a widget that is the wrong size
- Open KWGT’s sizing preference and make sure sizing is not set to Auto if Auto produces a distorted or unexpectedly small result.
- Return to the launcher and resize the widget with its handles.
- Reopen KWGT and adjust the design’s internal scaling or spacing only after the launcher rectangle is correct.
Kustom’s FAQ explains that Auto follows instructions supplied by the launcher. Some launchers report grid or cell information poorly, which can produce odd results even when the preset itself is correct. Disabling Auto separates KWGT’s sizing choice from that launcher information.
Fix a preset or skin that will not load
Confirm installation and storage
- Verify that the preset pack or skin is installed, not merely downloaded as a compressed file.
- In KWGT, select the intended Kustom folder or storage location.
- Check that the relevant preset, font, and image files exist in that location and can be opened by Android.
- Reopen the KWGT library after changing the storage location.
Check cleaners and optimizers
Device-cleaning, security, or optimization tools can quarantine, hide, or block skin-package files. Kustom recommends whitelisting skin packages when such a tool prevents them from providing files to Kustom. Temporarily pause the tool or add the pack to its allowed list, then test the preset again. Do not delete the pack while troubleshooting unless you have a copy of its files.
Separate a missing preset from a broken preset
If the pack is absent from the library, focus on installation, folder selection, file access, and optimizer interference. If the pack appears but renders blank or partially, inspect its referenced images, fonts, and online data sources. A missing location or network source can affect fields inside an otherwise visible design.

- Identify whether the widget actually uses weather, street, city, country, sunrise, sunset, or another location-dependent field.
- If it does, grant the location access requested by KWGT in Android Settings and reopen the widget.
- If you do not want live location, return to KWGT and select Manual or configure a fixed location, then remove location access from Android if desired.
- For weather values, verify network access as well; location permission alone cannot retrieve an online forecast.
If the widget has no location-dependent element, location permission is generally unnecessary according to Kustom’s permission guidance. Removing it in that case should not affect unrelated text, images, or local formulas.

A practical troubleshooting order
Use this sequence to avoid changing several variables at once:
- Tap the widget and confirm that KWGT opens; if it does not, restart the launcher and check that KWGT is installed.
- Check the widget’s preset, selected Kustom folder, and the presence of its files.
- Match each missing feature to its permission: files for assets and templates, location for location-dependent fields, network for online data, and notification access for media-player data.
- Review KWGT’s Android battery and background controls, including manufacturer-specific autostart or sleeping-app lists.
- Check KWGT’s sizing preference and resize the widget through the launcher.
- Inspect any cleaner, security, or optimizer utility that could block skin packages.
- Test the widget again after each single change so you know which fix worked.
KWGT version information and support
The Kustom downloads page lists KWGT 3.82, build 3.82b621115, uploaded 2026-07-30T15:03:23Z, as the latest stable version in the reviewed material. The Google Play listing reports an update on July 30, 2026 and 10M+ downloads as an app-store listing metric. App versions and download counts can change, so verify the current Play listing or Kustom download page before relying on those figures.

Those details let support distinguish a launcher-sizing problem from a permission, storage, optimizer, or preset-specific failure.
Bottom line
Set up KWGT by placing its widget through the launcher, opening the empty slot, and selecting or editing a preset. Give KWGT file access for normal operation, add location and network access only for features that use them, and enable notification access only for media-player widgets. For failures, troubleshoot in separate branches: battery restrictions for stale updates, Auto sizing for incorrect dimensions, storage and optimizer controls for missing presets, and the matching data permission for blank fields.
