Set up Klipsch bookshelf speakers by placing the left and right speakers symmetrically around your main listening seat, starting with an approximate equilateral triangle, and positioning the tweeters near seated ear height. For passive speakers, connect each to the matching amplifier or receiver channel with positive-to-positive and negative-to-negative polarity. Then refine placement in small steps and follow the manual for your exact model.
1. Check the speaker model and connection type
Find the model name on the speaker and use its matching manual before choosing an amplifier, wire, stand, wall clearance, or connection method. Passive bookshelf speakers need an amplifier or receiver; confirm the speaker’s load and the amplifier’s requirements from their respective manuals. Klipsch’s Reference manual describes the impedance compatibility of the models it covers, but that specification should not be assumed to apply to every Klipsch speaker: Klipsch Reference Series manual.
If the speaker has two sets of binding posts joined by a metal strip, leave the strip in place for a conventional single-wire connection unless the exact manual says otherwise. The Reference manual cautions that removing it can prevent correct operation; this detail is model-dependent.

2. Choose a starting position
Set the stereo spacing and listening distance
Place the speakers at equal distances from the main listening seat and arrange them symmetrically. Klipsch recommends an approximate equilateral triangle as a starting point, with the speakers at least as far apart as each is from the listener and typically six feet or more apart. These are general starting points, not fixed requirements for every room or model. The Reference Premiere manual suggests 6 to 15 feet (1.8 to 4.6 m) between its main left and right speakers; that range applies to the family covered by that manual, not all Klipsch bookshelf speakers: Klipsch Reference Premiere manual and Klipsch’s speaker arrangement guidance.

Set height and aim
Aim to put the tweeters near seated ear height, and keep the path between each speaker and listener unobstructed. Begin with both speakers facing forward or slightly toward the listening position. If you want to test toe-in, angle the pair equally and listen for changes in stereo imaging. Klipsch recommends small placement adjustments and evaluating them by listening rather than treating one angle as universally correct.
3. Allow for walls and room surfaces
Give rear-ported speakers some space from the wall behind them. Klipsch’s general placement advice supports leaving clearance but does not establish one universal distance for every bookshelf model. Follow your speaker’s manual, then compare nearby positions in small increments. A two-foot gap mentioned in Klipsch’s surround-speaker guidance is context-specific, not a blanket requirement for every bookshelf speaker: Klipsch’s home-theater speaker placement guidance.

- The exclusive Linear Travel Suspension (LTS) minimizes distortion for enhanced, detailed performances. Kapton is an extremely light and rigid material used in the tweeter suspension to provide high efficiency and improve resolution and detail. LTS tweeters are a hallmark of Klipsch speakers, making it a core component of some of the best speakers in the world
Hard floors and bare walls can contribute to reflections and echo, particularly in nearly square rooms. Klipsch gives rugs and wall hangings as examples of absorptive materials that may help. Treat these as possible room adjustments, not guaranteed fixes; change one factor at a time and listen.

- Turn off the amplifier or receiver. Make connections before powering the system.
- Connect the left speaker to the left channel and the right speaker to the right channel. Keep the channel assignment consistent with where the speakers are placed.
- Match polarity at both ends. Connect red or positive terminals to positive, and black or negative terminals to negative.
- Check for stray wire strands. No bare strand should touch another terminal; the Reference Premiere manual warns that a short can damage equipment.
- Confirm the wire specification in your model’s manual. The Reference Premiere manual specifies 16–12 gauge wire for its conventional connections. That instruction is for the models covered by that manual; check the matching documentation for your speakers and cable run.
5. Decide whether stands or a subwoofer solve a real need
Furniture or stands
Use stable furniture if it supports the speakers securely and puts them at a suitable height. Stands make sense when they help achieve seated ear height, spacing, or a clearer listening path. Klipsch lists KS Series stands in 24- and 28-inch heights and gives examples of compatible pairings, including the R-50M and RP-600M II: Klipsch KS Series bookshelf speaker stands. Before choosing stands, check height, footprint, stability, speaker dimensions, and attachment details. Any threaded-insert information on a product page applies only to the models specified there.

Stereo without a subwoofer or a system with one
A subwoofer is optional for bookshelf stereo listening. Consider adding one if you want more low-frequency support or are building a home-theater system. Klipsch describes subwoofers as a complement to bookshelf speakers and recommends trying different subwoofer positions because modest moves can change bass response: Klipsch’s home-theater system guide and Klipsch’s bookshelf-speaker guide.

Turn the system on and begin playback at a modest level. Confirm that both speakers play, that the left and right channels are in the correct places, and that the sound is not interrupted. Make one small adjustment at a time—such as changing spacing, distance from a wall, or toe-in—so you can tell what changed. Room, speaker, and component combinations differ, so treat the recommended geometry as a starting point.
