For the Nintendo GameCube version of Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee, Dolphin emulates a GameCube Standard Controller. Set Dolphin’s Port 1 to Standard Controller, select your keyboard or gamepad in the device list, and bind every GameCube input. The essential combat layout is A for punch, B for kick, X for a fierce attack, Y for block, Z for projectile or beam, L for duck/run, R for jump, and A+B for grabbing.

This is the GameCube fighting game, not the separate SNES title named Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters. The instructions below apply to a GameCube disc or image running through Dolphin.

What you are configuring

Godzilla: Destroy All Monsters Melee expects an analog GameCube controller. The left control stick moves the monster, the C-stick aims its head and projectile direction, the face buttons perform attacks and defense, and the shoulder buttons handle movement abilities. Dolphin reproduces those inputs even when the physical device is a keyboard, Xbox-style pad, PlayStation pad, Switch-compatible pad, generic USB controller, or an original GameCube controller connected through an adapter.

Dolphin does not impose one official keyboard layout. Each input slot captures whichever key, button, or axis you assign. The layout below is a practical starting point; change it if a key is uncomfortable or conflicts with your aiming method.

Original GameCube control layout

Game action Original GameCube input What it does
Move Control stick or D-pad Walk and steer the monster.
Aim head/projectile C-stick Turns the head and directs attacks that use projectile aim.
Punch A Regular punch attack.
Kick B Regular kick attack.
Fierce attack X Heavier attack assigned to the X button.
Block Y Defensive block.
Projectile or beam Z Tap for a projectile; hold to charge and use the breath/beam.
Duck/run L plus the control stick Uses the left shoulder input with directional movement.
Jump/fly R Jump; some monsters can fly while jump is held.
Grab A+B together Grab an opponent or a building.

The distinction between tapping and holding Z matters: a quick press produces the projectile, while holding the button produces the breath or beam behavior. Likewise, R is not only a jump button for every monster; some characters remain airborne or fly while it is held.

Block I Maps to GameCube Y.
Projectile/beam O Tap for projectile and hold for beam.
Duck/run Left Ctrl Maps to GameCube L.
Jump/fly Space Maps to GameCube R.
Grab J+K together Press the punch and kick keys at the same time.
Start Enter Use any convenient key for the GameCube Start button.

The table is a starting profile, not a requirement. I/J/K/L is convenient for an emulated C-stick, but J and I are also assigned to attacks in the example. Use a mouse for aiming, or move punch and block to unused keys if you want the entire aim cluster on I/J/K/L. Keep A+B on two keys that your keyboard can register simultaneously; if J+K produces missed grabs, choose two keys in a different area.

Set up keyboard controls in Dolphin

  1. Open the controller panel. Launch Dolphin and choose Options → Controller Settings. Dolphin’s controller guide describes this same path, or you can select the Controllers button in the main Dolphin window.
  2. Enable Port 1. Under GameCube Controllers, set Port 1 to Standard Controller. Do not leave it at None; the game will have no player-one input if the port is disabled.
  3. Open the mapping screen. Click Configure beside Port 1.
  4. Select the keyboard device. In the Device drop-down, choose the keyboard entry rather than a disconnected gamepad or an old device profile.
  5. Bind movement first. Select each left-stick direction and press W, A, S, or D. If Dolphin presents an axis rather than separate directions, move the intended key or axis when the slot is waiting for input. A keyboard supplies digital directions, so it will not have the gradual speed control of a real analog stick.
  6. Bind the C-stick. Select the up, down, left, and right C-stick slots and move the mouse or press the chosen aim keys. If mouse aiming feels too sensitive, use a dedicated four-key cluster instead.
  7. Bind the face buttons. Assign J to A, K to B, U to X, and I to Y if you are using the example profile. These correspond to punch, kick, fierce attack, and block.
  8. Bind the shoulder and Z inputs. Assign O to Z, Left Ctrl to L, and Space to R. Test both a quick O press and a held O press in a match so the projectile and beam behaviors are distinguishable.
  9. Bind Start and save a profile. Assign Enter, or another key, to Start. Use Dolphin’s profile-saving control to give the mapping a descriptive name such as “Keyboard-Godzilla.” A named profile makes it possible to restore the layout after changing devices.
  10. Calibrate and test. Use the calibration controls for any analog stick or mouse axis. Confirm that a neutral stick returns to center and that every direction releases cleanly. Launch the game and test movement, C-stick aiming, each attack, block, duck/run, jump, beam charging, and the A+B grab.

How to map an Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, or USB controller

A modern controller usually feels closer to the intended design because it provides analog movement, a separate C-stick, shoulder buttons, and comfortable simultaneous presses.

  1. Connect the controller before opening Dolphin, or reconnect it and reopen the controller configuration if it was not detected.
  2. Open Options → Controller Settings.
  3. Set GameCube Controllers → Port 1 to Standard Controller, then click Configure.
  4. Choose the actual controller from the Device drop-down. Do not leave the keyboard or a previously disconnected pad selected.
  5. Map the left analog stick to the GameCube control stick and the right analog stick to the C-stick. Map the controller’s face buttons to A, B, X, and Y according to the labels shown in Dolphin rather than assuming the physical letters match the GameCube’s color and position.
  6. Map a shoulder button or trigger to L, another to R, and a face or shoulder button to Z. Ensure the trigger assigned to Z can remain held, because the game distinguishes a Z tap from a held beam.
  7. Map Start, calibrate both sticks, save a named profile, and test the A+B grab by pressing the two assigned buttons together.

When a controller has analog triggers, set the Z binding so a normal press reaches the activation threshold reliably. If a trigger is too shallow or is treated as an axis instead of a button, select the appropriate input representation in Dolphin and test it in the configuration window.

Using an original GameCube controller

Official Wii U/Switch adapter path

Dolphin supports the official Wii U/Switch GameCube adapter through its native adapter mode. In GameCube Controller Settings, enable Direct Connect, plug in the adapter and controller, and restart Dolphin if it requests a restart. After Dolphin detects the adapter, configure Port 1 for the connected pad and verify each stick, button, and trigger.

Generic USB adapters

Generic adapters may appear to the operating system as ordinary input devices instead of using Dolphin’s native adapter path. Select the adapter’s device entry and map its controls manually to the GameCube Standard Controller slots. If the adapter exposes a switch for different modes, use the mode that presents a conventional controller device, then recalibrate the sticks.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Check exact model compatibility before buying an adapter. Native Direct Connect behavior is specific to the supported adapter path; a generic model may require ordinary manual mapping.

Keyboard versus controller: which is better?

Consideration Keyboard Controller
Movement precision WASD gives immediate digital directions, without analog walking speed. Analog stick input provides gradual direction and speed.
Aiming Mouse or four-key C-stick emulation works, but requires a layout that avoids key conflicts. A second analog stick matches the game’s head-aiming design.
Simultaneous inputs A+B grabs depend on keyboard rollover and comfortable key spacing. Two buttons can normally be pressed together naturally.
Long-match comfort Comfort depends heavily on key placement, wrist position, and whether mouse aiming is used. GameCube-style ergonomics generally reduce hand repositioning.
Portability and cost No separate controller is required if a keyboard is already available. Requires a compatible USB pad or adapter; exact cost depends on the device.
Dolphin compatibility Works through the standard device-mapping screen. Works through the same screen, with native Direct Connect available for the supported official adapter path.

Choose keyboard controls when convenience, portability, or an existing desk setup matters most. Choose a controller when analog movement, C-stick aiming, repeated shoulder-button use, and reliable grabs are priorities. A GameCube-style USB controller or an original pad with a compatible USB adapter most closely preserves the game’s intended input grammar.

Troubleshoot a controller or keyboard that does not respond

Nothing responds in the match

  • Return to Options → Controller Settings and confirm GameCube Controllers → Port 1 is Standard Controller, not None.
  • Open Configure and verify that the intended keyboard, controller, or adapter is selected in Device.
  • Click each input slot and press the physical key or button again. A profile can retain bindings for a device that is no longer connected.
  • Save the corrected profile, close the configuration window, and relaunch the game.

Movement is drifting or only partly works

  • Open the stick calibration controls and set the neutral position while the stick is untouched.
  • Confirm that up, down, left, and right were captured from the same physical stick or keyboard cluster.
  • For a controller, check that the selected device is not reporting a second stick or an unrelated axis as the left stick.
  • For a keyboard, remember that digital WASD cannot reproduce analog intermediate positions; limited speed control is expected.

Aiming is wrong or attacks point away from the target

  • Check that the right analog stick, mouse directions, or chosen C-stick keys are assigned to the C-stick slots rather than the left stick.
  • If using I/J/K/L for aiming, move any punch or block bindings that use the same keys.
  • Recenter the mouse or recalibrate the right stick, then test head rotation before testing projectile direction.

The beam will not charge

  • Verify that Z is bound to a button or key that can remain pressed, not only to a momentary shortcut that releases immediately.
  • Tap once to test the projectile, then hold the same input to test the breath/beam behavior.
  • On a controller with analog triggers, confirm the trigger crosses Dolphin’s activation threshold and is not mapped to an unintended axis direction.

Grab does not register

  • Press the inputs assigned to GameCube A and B at the same time; grab is an A+B action, not a separate third button.
  • Test both keys independently first. If one key is not recognized, correct that binding before testing the chord.
  • On a keyboard, move the pair to keys that your hardware can register simultaneously. Some keyboard matrices do not recognize every three-key or adjacent-key combination.

The original controller is not detected

  • For the official Wii U/Switch adapter path, enable Direct Connect in GameCube Controller Settings and restart Dolphin when prompted.
  • For a generic adapter, select its normal input-device entry and map controls manually.
  • Reconnect the adapter, reopen Dolphin’s controller panel, and check that Port 1 is still assigned to a Standard Controller.

Save profiles for different devices

Use a separate named Dolphin profile for the keyboard, a modern controller, and an original GameCube pad. Profiles prevent a new device from overwriting a working layout and make it quick to switch between desk play and adapter-based play. After saving, disconnect and reconnect the device once and verify that Dolphin still selects the intended profile and device entry.

A reliable test sequence

  1. Move in all four directions and release the stick or keys to confirm a neutral stop.
  2. Rotate the head with the C-stick or mouse and verify that aim follows the intended direction.
  3. Press A, B, X, and Y separately for punch, kick, fierce attack, and block.
  4. Tap Z for a projectile, then hold Z for the breath/beam.
  5. Hold L while moving to test duck/run.
  6. Press and hold R to test jumping and any character-specific flying behavior.
  7. Press A+B together near an opponent or building to test grabbing.
  8. Press Start to confirm the menu input, then save the final profile.

Recommended setup

For the fastest setup, use a controller with two analog sticks: map the left stick to movement, the right stick to C-stick aiming, A/B/X/Y to punch, kick, fierce attack, and block, Z to a holdable button, L and R to the shoulder controls, and test A+B for grabbing. A keyboard works fully through Dolphin’s Standard Controller profile, but use a mouse or a conflict-free key cluster for aiming and save a profile after calibration. If you own an original GameCube pad, use Dolphin’s Direct Connect path with the supported official adapter or map a generic adapter as a normal input device.
