Set up IPVanish in two separate stages: install and sign in to the IPVanish VPN app, then connect the VPN; after that, locate and enable the antivirus or Threat Protection feature if your app, operating system and subscription include it. The VPN encrypts network traffic and changes the apparent connection location. Antivirus-style protection checks downloads or web destinations for malicious or deceptive content. One does not replace the other.
IPVanish announced an updated antivirus experience integrated into its Windows and macOS desktop clients on October 8, 2026. The announcement represents a product change, so the feature name, rollout, supported operating-system versions and plan eligibility should be checked in the current app and IPVanish documentation rather than assumed from older guides.
What you are setting up
There are two security layers in this setup. The VPN creates an encrypted tunnel between your device and the VPN service. That helps protect traffic on untrusted networks and reduces the amount of connection information visible to the local network. It does not inspect every file you download and it does not decide whether a login page is fraudulent.

The antivirus or Threat Protection layer is intended to address a different class of risk: malicious downloads, deceptive pages and other harmful web content. TechRadar’s October 8, 2026 report quoted Subbu Sthanu, IPVanish’s General Manager of Consumer Cybersecurity, making the distinction clearly: "A VPN was never meant to be the whole answer. It protects your Internet connections and your privacy, but does not shield you from malicious downloads, fake login pages, and other threats."

Install the VPN first because it is the common application foundation. Then look for a separately labelled security feature. Do not treat a successful VPN connection as proof that antivirus scanning is active.
Check these items before installing
Preparation prevents most setup failures, especially while IPVanish is moving from older Threat Protection terminology to a newer desktop antivirus experience.
- An IPVanish account and eligible subscription: Sign-in is required. The current plan that includes antivirus-style protection is not established by the available product announcement, so confirm eligibility in your account or the installed app.
- The correct platform package: Indexed setup destinations cover Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Fire TV and Chrome OS. Apple TV has also appeared in older Threat Protection descriptions. Do not install a package intended for a different operating system.
- A current operating system: The exact supported versions were not confirmed in the available current documentation. Check the requirement shown on IPVanish’s current download or support page before installing.
- Permission to install and approve a VPN configuration: Desktop and mobile operating systems may ask you to approve a network extension, VPN profile or similar system permission. Only approve a prompt produced by the IPVanish app or your operating system.
- A reliable first connection: Use a normal internet connection for the initial download and sign-in. A VPN cannot connect until the app has been installed and authenticated.
- Existing security software: If another security product controls web filtering or network extensions, note its settings before installation. Two products trying to filter the same traffic can cause connection or page-loading problems.
Which devices currently have which protection?
Availability is changing, and historical platform descriptions should not be read as a current feature promise. Use this matrix to decide what to verify in the app.

The index is a directory of guides, not their current contents. Its 2023 update date means it is useful for finding a platform category but not for proving today’s buttons, operating-system requirements or feature parity.

Install IPVanish on a computer
Windows or macOS
Use IPVanish’s current official download destination for your operating system. Avoid repackaged installers and search-result downloads whose publisher is not IPVanish.
- Download the installer offered for your exact operating system and release.
- Open the installer and complete the normal installation prompts. If the operating system asks whether the application may add a VPN or network component, confirm that the publisher and application name match IPVanish.
- Launch IPVanish after installation.
- Sign in with the IPVanish account that has the subscription you intend to use.
- Allow the VPN or network permission requested by the operating system. The wording and location of this approval differ between Windows and macOS versions.
- Wait for the main dashboard to finish loading. Do not assume that being signed in means the VPN is connected.
The exact labels and sequence can change as IPVanish rolls out its updated desktop antivirus experience. If the installer refuses to run, first confirm the operating-system requirement shown on the current IPVanish page; do not rely on a 2023 guide or an old screenshot.
Android or iOS
- Open the official app store for the device and search for the IPVanish application. Check the developer name before installing.
- Install the current app and open it.
- Sign in with your IPVanish account.
- When the device asks to add or allow a VPN configuration, review the request and approve it only if it is generated by the IPVanish app.
- Return to the IPVanish dashboard and confirm that the account and subscription load correctly.
Mobile app menus are frequently redesigned. If you do not see a Threat Protection or antivirus control, do not infer that the VPN itself is providing file or page scanning; check the current feature list for your plan and device.

Fire TV, Apple TV and Chrome OS
Use the platform-specific IPVanish destination rather than adapting desktop or mobile instructions. Install only the current application or supported extension shown for the device. Sign in, approve any platform VPN permission, and check whether the app exposes a separate protection control. The available evidence does not establish a current, identical workflow across these platforms.

Connect the VPN safely
Once the app is installed and you are signed in, connect before using an untrusted network or opening sensitive services.
- Open IPVanish and wait for the account status to load.
- Choose the location selector if you need a particular country or city. If location is not important, use the app’s recommended or fastest option when one is offered.
- Press the clearly labelled connection control, commonly shown as Connect or a power-style button. Treat the status as connected only when the app changes to its connected state.
- Keep the IPVanish app running according to the platform’s normal background rules. Closing an app window does not always mean the VPN tunnel has ended, but force-quitting or disabling its VPN profile can.
- Open a browser and check that ordinary sites load. If a work, school or banking service rejects the connection, disconnect temporarily only when you understand the risk and the service’s policy.
- When finished, use the app’s disconnect control. Do not simply delete the app or revoke its VPN permission while a connection is active.
The VPN connection protects the network path; it does not prove that a downloaded file is safe or that a website is legitimate. Keep the antivirus-style layer configured separately.
Turn on antivirus or Threat Protection
Windows and macOS desktop clients
After signing in, inspect the dashboard and settings for a section named Antivirus, Threat Protection, Security or a similar term. The October 2026 announcement indicates that the desktop experience has been updated, so an older instruction referring specifically to “Threat Protection Pro” may not match the current interface.

- Read the feature description and confirm that it covers your operating system and subscription.
- Enable the protection switch if it is present. If the app offers separate controls for downloaded files, web pages or real-time monitoring, enable only the controls you understand and need.
- Complete any operating-system permission request required for file or web inspection.
- Run the app’s available status check or scan option. Do not download a known malicious file to test it.
- Record whether the status remains protected after you disconnect the VPN. Earlier reporting said Threat Protection Pro could continue working with the VPN disconnected, but that is historical behavior and must be confirmed in the current release.
If the control is absent, the most likely explanations are an unsupported operating-system version, an account without the necessary plan, a staged rollout that has not reached your installation, or a platform that offers VPN-only service. Verify those possibilities with current IPVanish support rather than installing an unofficial add-on.

Android, iOS and TV devices
Older reporting described standard Threat Protection on Android, iOS, Fire TV and Apple TV, but it predates the October 2026 desktop announcement. In the current app, look for a protection or security section after sign-in. Confirm three things before relying on it: what content it checks, whether it requires the VPN to be connected, and whether it is included in your plan.
TV interfaces may expose fewer controls than desktop interfaces. If a television app shows only VPN connection controls, do not assume that it scans files or browser pages. Chrome OS requires the same caution because the indexed setup directory does not establish current antivirus support.

These layers can have different states. A VPN may be connected while antivirus is disabled, or antivirus may continue operating after the VPN is disconnected if the current product supports that mode.

Do not generalize desktop behavior to mobile, TV or Chrome OS. The historical report grouped mobile and TV products differently, and the 2026 desktop update may have changed names and controls.

Common setup problems and fixes
The installer or app is unavailable
- Confirm that you selected the current package for the exact operating system and device type.
- Check the current IPVanish support page for supported versions. The available material does not establish a universal minimum version.
- Remove an incomplete prior installation only through the operating system’s normal uninstall process, then retry the official installer.
- On managed work or school devices, ask the administrator whether VPN or network extensions are blocked.
You can install the app but cannot sign in
- Verify the account email and password outside the app if IPVanish provides a web account page.
- Check the device clock and internet connection; an incorrect clock or captive portal can interrupt authentication.
- Do not create a second account merely because a feature is missing. First confirm which account and plan the app has loaded.
The VPN will not connect
- Finish any hotel, airport or café captive-portal sign-in before starting IPVanish.
- Reopen the app and retry another location if the selected endpoint is unavailable.
- Review the operating system’s VPN settings for a disabled or conflicting profile.
- Temporarily pause another VPN or network-filtering product. Running two VPN tunnels at once commonly prevents either from completing.
- If the app repeatedly requests a permission, cancel, restart the device, and approve the request from the IPVanish app again. Contact current support if the permission loop continues.
The antivirus or Threat Protection control is missing
- Check whether you are using Windows or macOS desktop, where the updated antivirus experience was announced, or a platform with only historical Threat Protection references.
- Verify plan eligibility and the app’s version.
- Sign out and back in after updating; a newly enabled account entitlement may not appear until the session refreshes.
- Do not use an old “Threat Protection Pro” guide as proof that the same control should appear in the current app.
Protection stops when the VPN disconnects
That behavior may be intentional for your current platform or plan. Earlier reporting said desktop Threat Protection Pro could work while disconnected, but it did not establish that behavior for every current release. Check the feature description in your installed app and contact IPVanish support if the stated behavior differs from what you need.
Web pages or downloads are blocked unexpectedly
- Read the warning shown by the app instead of bypassing it automatically.
- Confirm the page address independently if you believe it is a false positive.
- For a work or school service, ask the administrator whether VPN routing or web filtering is permitted.
- Never disable protection merely to open a link received in an unsolicited message.
Keep the installation dependable
- Update IPVanish from the official source whenever the app offers an update.
- Keep Windows, macOS, Android, iOS, Fire TV or Chrome OS current enough to satisfy the app’s published requirement.
- After a major app update, recheck the protection page, subscription status and whether protection operates with the VPN disconnected.
- Review VPN permissions after restoring a device from backup or changing network-management software.
- Before travelling, connect once on a trusted network so the app has authenticated and any required permissions are already granted.
- If you share a device, make sure each user understands that a VPN connection is not the same as antivirus protection.
A practical verification checklist
Use this checklist after installation and again after a major IPVanish update:
- The app was obtained from the official IPVanish distribution channel for the device.
- You are signed in to the intended account.
- The operating system meets the current published requirement.
- The VPN permission or profile is present and the app reports a connected state when you connect.
- The antivirus or Threat Protection control is visible, enabled and covered by your plan, if your platform supports it.
- You know whether the protection feature remains active when the VPN is disconnected.
- You have not treated an encrypted connection as evidence that a file or website is safe.
What this setup can and cannot do
With both layers enabled, IPVanish can provide an encrypted VPN connection and, where the current app supports it, additional checks for harmful downloads or deceptive web destinations. Those functions reduce different categories of risk. Neither is a guarantee that every file is safe, every account is secure or every scam will be detected.
The most important qualification is version and platform. IPVanish’s October 2026 announcement describes a meaningful Windows and macOS antivirus update, while older descriptions cover mobile and TV features under different names. Confirm the current app’s labels, plan terms, supported operating system and disconnected-operation behavior before relying on the feature.
