Interpreter Workstation is the clearest documented open-source route for a desktop workspace that can read local files through a permission boundary. You can connect it to a local model such as Ollama or LM Studio, or use a supported hosted provider. Those are separate choices: opening local files in the workspace does not, by itself, keep model inference on your computer.

This guide covers the documented source build, provider selection, file and command permissions, safe first tasks, document-format limits, and the important differences from Claude Cowork’s current plan- and deployment-dependent behavior.

What you are setting up

Interpreter Workstation is an open-source, self-hostable desktop workspace built on Open Interpreter. Its project documentation describes an agent that can read files inside an app-controlled local boundary and render document previews locally. It does not require an Interpreter account. The project supports either a local model provider or a supported cloud provider.

This is a focused alternative for local-file tasks, not a claim of complete Claude Cowork feature parity. The documented capabilities cover file access, model selection, previews, and code-based document workflows; they do not establish equivalent performance, integrations, or user experience.

How Cowork’s current behavior affects the comparison

Anthropic’s help material describes Cowork sessions as cloud-default, while also documenting local sessions for existing desktop deployments. It says new Cowork tasks on Pro and Max plans run in the cloud beginning October 6, 2026. As of October 13, 2026, treat Cowork’s local-versus-cloud behavior as dependent on plan and deployment, and verify the behavior shown in your own installation.

In either product, local-file access is not the same thing as local inference. A workspace can read a folder on your computer while prompts or selected file content are processed by a hosted model.

Choose where inference happens

Decide this before you give the agent important files. Workstation’s file boundary and its model provider are independent settings.

Choice What remains on your computer What can leave the computer When it fits
Local provider The workspace, selected files, and inference handled by the configured local model service Anything your local provider itself sends elsewhere, if it is configured to do so You need local inference or want to minimize dependence on a hosted API
Hosted provider The workspace and the files it can access remain local until content is selected for a request Prompts and selected content are sent to that provider under its service behavior and terms You prefer a hosted model or do not have a suitable local model installed

Open Interpreter’s quickstart says first-run setup walks through provider selection and names Ollama and LM Studio as local-model connection methods. You can select one of those or another provider supported by the current build, then confirm the active provider and model in Workstation before starting a sensitive task.

Check the prerequisites before building

The Workstation README lists a developer-oriented source-build environment. These requirements are for compiling the project, not a claim that every packaged release needs all of them at runtime.

Requirement Purpose What to verify
Node.js 22 Runs the JavaScript build tooling Use the Node.js 22 major version expected by the repository
pnpm 9 Installs dependencies and runs project scripts Check that the pnpm command reports version 9
Bun Required by the project’s build environment Install it and make sure it is available on your shell path
Rust stable and Cargo Builds native components Confirm both rustc and cargo work
Git with submodule support Retrieves the repository and its submodules Use a Git installation that supports recursive cloning

The project publishes releases as well as source code, but the available documentation does not establish a platform-specific installer path or identify the best packaged route for each operating system. If you use a release artifact, follow the instructions shipped with that artifact rather than assuming the source-build commands apply.

Build Workstation from source

The following is the project’s documented source-build sequence. Run it from a terminal on a supported development machine.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Clone the repository with its submodules:

    git clone --recurse-submodules https://github.com/openinterpreter/interpreter-workstation.git
  2. Change into the project directory:

    cd interpreter-workstation
  3. Install JavaScript dependencies:

    pnpm install
  4. Download the Open Interpreter executable for the current platform:

    pnpm run download:oix -- --current-platform
  5. Download the PDF processing component for the current platform:

    pnpm run download:pdfcpu -- --current-platform
  6. Download the Qwen speech-recognition component for the current platform:

    pnpm run download:qwen-asr -- --current-platform
  7. Build the application:

    pnpm run build
  8. Start the built application:

    pnpm start

Keep the terminal output from each step. A failed dependency install, an unavailable native tool, or a download for the wrong platform can make the later build appear to fail for an unrelated reason. If a command is not recognized, fix the corresponding prerequisite first; do not substitute a different major version without checking the repository’s current instructions.

Complete first-run provider setup

On first launch, follow the provider-selection flow. The exact labels can change between builds, but the decision is stable:

  1. Select a local provider if the model must run on your machine. Start the provider separately, make sure its model is downloaded, and choose the provider in Workstation. Ollama and LM Studio are the local options named by Open Interpreter’s quickstart.
  2. Select a supported hosted provider if you want remote inference. Supply credentials only through the app’s supported configuration path and check which model is active.
  3. Confirm the active model and provider with a harmless request before opening private material. A local folder connected to a hosted provider still results in selected content being sent to that provider.
  4. Record the choice for anyone else using the workstation. Changing the model later does not automatically change the file permissions or sandbox mode.

The community source distribution is described as having no hosted account provider, hosted API, telemetry, crash-reporting endpoint, or external document-engine source enabled by default. That default does not prevent you from connecting a direct hosted provider or a local model. Once you connect a hosted service, its own data-handling terms govern what happens to prompts and content; the available project documentation does not settle the policies of every provider.

Open only a bounded workspace

Create a dedicated test folder before granting access. Copy in a few non-sensitive documents rather than pointing the agent at your home directory, an entire drive, credentials, or a synchronized company share.

  1. Create a new folder such as workstation-sandbox.
  2. Copy a small set of disposable DOCX, XLSX, PPTX, text, or PDF files into it.
  3. Open that folder as the Workstation workspace using the app’s local-file workflow.
  4. Check which folder the permission prompt names. If it is broader than intended, cancel and reopen the narrower folder.
  5. Keep the test folder until you understand how requests, approvals, and writes behave.

Sandbox modes

Open Interpreter’s CLI reference lists three sandbox modes. Use the narrowest mode that lets the task finish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Mode Effect Practical starting point
read-only Allows inspection without granting normal write access Use first for summaries, extraction, classification, and proposed plans
workspace-write Allows writes within the designated workspace Use after reviewing a plan when the agent must create or modify files in the test folder
danger-full-access Provides broader system access Do not use as the default; reserve it for a clearly understood, isolated need

Approval policies

The same reference lists untrusted, on-request, and never approval policies. For a first run, retain a policy that asks before consequential actions. Treat an approval dialog as a review point, not as a formality: inspect the command, paths, and intended result before accepting.

  • untrusted: the most cautious choice when you do not yet know how a task will behave.
  • on-request: a practical supervised setting when the agent can work but must ask before selected actions.
  • never: removes interactive approval and should not be your default for unfamiliar tasks.

A permission boundary reduces the scope of an error; it does not guarantee that the agent will interpret a document correctly or produce safe commands. Keep backups of anything you allow it to change.

Run a safe first task

Start with a read-only request that has an observable answer. This separates file access, model connectivity, and write permissions instead of testing all three at once.

  1. With the dedicated folder open and read-only enabled, ask the agent to list the files it can see.
  2. Ask for a short summary of one known document and require it to identify the filename it used.
  3. Ask for a proposed organization plan, such as grouping documents by topic, but do not authorize changes.
  4. Inspect the plan for wrong files, invented content, or an overly broad path.
  5. Only after the read-only result is correct, switch to workspace-write if you need generated folders, renamed copies, or a report.
  6. Approve each consequential action and check the resulting files manually.
  7. Return to read-only when the write task is complete.

For repeatable work, write the task in a way that names the allowed folder, the output location, the file types to include, and the actions that are forbidden. This makes an accidental expansion of scope easier to notice.

Know which document workflows are included

Community Workstation builds provide local, read-only previews for DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX. Previewing is not the same as editing: the preview lets you inspect content, but it does not provide full rich-document editing.

Workflow Documented support What to expect
DOCX preview Included in community builds Local, read-only viewing
XLSX preview Included in community builds Local, read-only viewing
PPTX preview Included in community builds Local, read-only viewing
Transformation or generation Supported through code execution and reusable skills The agent can create or transform files through code, subject to your permissions and installed tools
Rich embedded editing or format conversion Optional integration Requires a compatible document engine configured separately

If a task requires preserving complex layout, tracked changes, formulas, macros, or embedded objects, treat a generated result as a draft and verify it in an appropriate office application. The documented preview capability alone does not establish full fidelity for those features.

Understand the privacy and security boundary

There are three distinct boundaries to check:

  1. File boundary: Workstation’s permissioned interface determines which local paths the agent can access.
  2. Execution boundary: The sandbox mode determines where code or commands may read and write.
  3. Provider boundary: The selected local or hosted model determines where prompts and selected content are processed.

A narrow file boundary does not make a hosted provider local. Conversely, a local model does not make an unrestricted workspace safe. Keep credentials, personal records, and unrelated projects outside the test folder; use operating-system permissions and backups in addition to Workstation’s controls.

When using a hosted provider, review that provider’s current terms and retention controls yourself. The project documentation describes the connection options but does not provide one universal data policy for every provider.

Troubleshoot common setup failures

The clone succeeds but installation fails

Check the versions of Node.js and pnpm first, then verify Bun, Rust, and Cargo are on the path. Because the clone uses submodules, confirm that the repository was cloned with --recurse-submodules. Re-run dependency installation only after correcting the missing prerequisite.

A platform download does not complete

The documented download commands use --current-platform. Run them on the machine that will execute Workstation, and check the terminal output for a blocked network request, an interrupted download, or an unsupported platform identifier. Do not copy a binary downloaded for a different operating system.

The app starts but the model does not answer

Confirm that a provider was selected, the local service is running if you chose one, and a model is available to that service. If you chose a hosted provider, verify its credentials and account configuration. Then send a short request that does not involve private files.

The agent cannot see a file

Verify that the file is inside the folder granted to the workspace, that the file type is readable by the selected workflow, and that the current sandbox is not narrower than your request. Reopen the exact folder instead of granting a parent directory.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The agent proposes an unsafe or irrelevant action

Reject the approval, stop the task, and return to read-only. Narrow the prompt to named files and a specific output path. Review the proposed command before changing the approval policy or sandbox mode.

A document preview is incomplete

Remember that the community preview is read-only and does not promise full office-feature fidelity. For editing, conversion, or complex layout, configure a compatible document engine separately or perform the final operation in a dedicated office tool.

Workstation versus Cowork for this specific use case

The useful comparison is operational rather than a claim that one system is universally better.

Comparison axis Interpreter Workstation Claude Cowork information available for October 2026
Deployment model Open-source, self-hostable workspace; source build documented Cloud-default sessions described by Anthropic, with local sessions documented for existing desktop deployments
Inference choice Supported hosted provider or local model provider Depends on plan and deployment; verify current behavior

Maintain the installation

A source build is an ongoing software project, not a one-time appliance. Before pulling updates, save any local configuration and note the provider and model you are using. Read the repository’s current release notes and build instructions, then repeat dependency installation or platform downloads if the project requires them.

After an update, test in the disposable folder first: launch the app, confirm the provider, check that the sandbox and approval settings are still conservative, preview a sample document, and run the same read-only summary request. Only then reconnect a working dataset.

If you need a simpler deployment, evaluate a published release artifact for your operating system, but do not assume that a release has the same setup steps or defaults as a source build. The available documentation does not identify one universal installer procedure.

Decision checklist

  • Choose Workstation if you want an open-source workspace with documented permission-scoped local-file access and the ability to select a local or hosted model.
  • Choose a local provider such as Ollama or LM Studio when local inference is a requirement; merely opening local files is insufficient.
  • Use the documented source build only if you can maintain Node.js 22, pnpm 9, Bun, Rust stable, Cargo, and Git.
  • Start with a copied test folder, read-only sandboxing, and supervised approvals.
  • Move to workspace-write only for a specific, reviewed output task; avoid danger-full-access and never approval as defaults.
  • Expect read-only DOCX, XLSX, and PPTX previews, not full editing. Plan on a separately configured document engine for richer editing or conversion.
  • Review the active provider every time the privacy requirement changes, because local files and local inference are separate decisions.
