Instagram Teen Accounts are enabled automatically for eligible teenagers. They are not a separate app, subscription, or device. Instagram applies more private defaults, tighter messaging and interaction controls, sensitive-content limits, Hidden Words filtering, reminders, and overnight Sleep mode. Parents can add optional supervision with the teen’s agreement, but supervision shows recent contacts and activity controls—not the contents of direct messages.
This guide explains how to confirm the account is protected, review each important setting, invite supervision, and handle differences between teens under 16 and those aged 16 or 17. Instagram’s labels and rollout status can change, so use the current app’s settings search when a menu name differs from the wording below.
What an Instagram Teen Account does
Meta announced Instagram Teen Accounts on September 17, 2024, and said the protections had reached every country where Instagram was available by an update published June 11, 2025. The safeguards are applied automatically to accounts identified as belonging to teens. There is no separate Teen Account download and no paid upgrade.

The default protections are designed to reduce unwanted contact, limit exposure to mature material, and make it easier to disconnect at night. They are safeguards, not a guarantee that every unsuitable post, message, or account will be blocked. Review the actual switches shown on the teen’s account after updates, because features and labels can vary by age, country, and rollout stage.

Automatic defaults for privacy and contact
- Private profile: Meta says accounts for all teens under 16 are private, including existing accounts and new accounts. Teens under 18 are placed into a private account when they sign up. A private profile limits access by people who are not approved followers; it does not remove people who already follow the account.
- Messaging: the strictest messaging setting allows messages from people the teen follows or is already connected with.
- Tags and mentions: only people the teen follows can tag or mention the account by default.
- Sensitive content: the restrictive control is selected to reduce exposure to material Instagram classifies as potentially upsetting or mature.
- Hidden Words: the strictest setting is enabled to filter offensive words, phrases, and comments.
- Time reminder: Instagram displays a leave-the-app reminder after 60 minutes of use in a day. This is a published setting from Meta, not an independently measured usage result.
- Sleep mode: the default schedule is 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. During that period notifications are muted and direct-message auto-replies can tell people the teen is in Sleep mode.

Do not change a birth date to bypass these protections. If Instagram has the wrong age, use its official age-correction or verification process and provide only the information the app requests.
Set up or confirm a Teen Account
Because Teen Account protections are automatic, setup is mainly a verification and review exercise. The following sequence avoids relying on a menu path that may have changed.
- Update Instagram. Install the latest version from the device’s official app store on both the teen’s and parent’s phones. Supervision eligibility information published by Facebook’s Help Centre says both people need Instagram accounts and the latest iPhone or Android app version.
- Check the age details. Open the teen’s profile and account information, and confirm that the date of birth is accurate. Instagram may display a Teen Account notice or age-specific prompts. If the date is wrong, follow Instagram’s in-app correction process rather than attempting to work around age checks.
- Look for the account’s protective defaults. Open Instagram’s settings and use the settings search field for terms such as “privacy,” “messages,” “tags,” “mentions,” “sensitive content,” “Hidden Words,” “sleep,” or “supervision.” The exact grouping can differ between iPhone, Android, account types, and rollout versions.
- Review the account’s visibility. Confirm whether the profile is private and inspect the follower list. A private profile controls future access by requiring approval for new followers, while people already approved remain followers until they are removed.
- Ask whether supervision is wanted. Teen Account protection works without a parent joining. Supervision is an optional, consent-based layer that adds oversight and scheduling tools; it is not required to obtain the automatic defaults.
Review privacy settings together
Make the review a joint check on the teen’s phone. Parents should explain what each setting changes, and teens should be able to identify accounts or conversations that concern them. A setting review is most useful after an app update, a change in school or family circumstances, or an unwanted-contact incident.

Confirm that the profile is private if that is the family’s intended protection. On a private profile, a person who is not an approved follower generally cannot see the teen’s posts or interact with them through the profile. Review the existing follower list separately: private mode does not automatically remove followers already approved. Remove or block accounts the teen no longer recognizes, and check whether any connected account belongs to a trusted person.

Private status does not make every interaction invisible. Content can still be copied, photographed, or discussed elsewhere, and the teen may interact in group contexts. Use blocking and reporting when an account is threatening, impersonating someone, or repeatedly violating boundaries.
2. Messages and message requests
Inspect the message-control options and confirm that the strictest Teen Account choice is active unless the family has a documented reason to use a less restrictive option. The default is intended to allow contact from people the teen follows or already knows through an existing connection, while reducing unsolicited requests from strangers.
Explain the limit clearly: a restrictive setting lowers the number of people who can start conversations, but it cannot guarantee that all unwanted content disappears. Existing conversations, group interactions, accounts that become connected, and messages that evade filters still require judgment. Encourage the teen to use restrict, block, report, and the conversation-level safety controls when available.
3. Tags and mentions
Check both tag and mention controls. Teen Accounts default to allowing tags and mentions only from people the teen follows. Review tagged posts and remove tags that reveal a location, school, schedule, or other information the teen does not want associated with the profile. A tag control does not stop someone from discussing the teen without tagging the account, so privacy conversations should include screenshots, usernames, and geolocation clues.

4. Hidden Words
Open Hidden Words and verify that the strictest filtering option is enabled. This feature is intended to screen offensive terms and related message or comment requests. Add words, phrases, emojis, or names that are specifically distressing to the teen when the app permits custom entries.
Filtering is not perfect. It may miss misspellings, images, coded language, or newly created terms, and it can hide an innocent message that contains a blocked word. Check filtered requests when the teen is comfortable doing so, and use reporting or blocking for harassment rather than relying on filtering alone.
5. Sensitive-content control
Review the sensitive-content setting and leave it at the restrictive option if the family wants the strongest default limit. Instagram’s classification systems decide what falls into this category, so the control reduces recommendation and discovery of some material rather than promising a completely mature-content-free feed.

6. Notifications, reminders, and Sleep mode
Confirm that the 60-minute daily leave-the-app reminder is enabled and discuss whether the default 10 p.m. to 7 a.m. Sleep mode fits the teen’s schedule. Sleep mode mutes notifications and can send direct-message auto-replies during the scheduled hours. Families can review notification exceptions and adjust the schedule if the account offers those controls, but avoid using a schedule as a substitute for discussing late-night contact or emergencies.
Add parental supervision when the family wants more oversight
Supervision adds controls to the automatic Teen Account layer. Both the teen and parent must participate: the parent sends an invitation, and supervision begins after the teen accepts. The Facebook Help Centre’s published eligibility summary says the teen is 13–17, the parent is over 18, both have Instagram accounts, both use the latest iPhone or Android app version, and only one parent can supervise an account. The Help Centre result redirected to a login screen when checked, so treat those details as a starting point and follow the eligibility prompt displayed in the current app.
Invite and accept supervision
- On the parent’s Instagram account, search settings for “supervision” or open the supervision/Family Center prompt shown by the app.
- Choose the option to invite a teen and select the account to supervise. Instagram may provide a shareable invitation or an in-app invitation.
- On the teen’s account, open the invitation, review what supervision provides, and accept it. The teen’s acceptance is required; a parent cannot silently turn on supervision.
- After the connection is active, open the supervision dashboard on the parent’s account and confirm that the correct teen account is listed.
- If Instagram directs you to Meta Family Center, use the official destination at familycenter.meta.com/supervision and follow the current sign-in and linking prompts.
If the invitation expires, the wrong account is selected, or the feature is missing, update both apps, verify the age and account details, and send a new invitation from the current supervision screen. Do not create a second parent connection if the app says an account is already supervised.

Meta says a supervising parent can see the people the teen messaged during the previous seven days. That is a list of recent messaging contacts, not the text, images, videos, or voice content in those conversations. Parents cannot read the messages through supervision. The seven-day period is the published scope of that contact view and should not be treated as a complete historical archive.

Supervision can also let a parent set a total daily Instagram time limit, block access during selected periods, and approve or deny a teen’s request to loosen certain protections. Parents of older teens can enable supervision too, with approval controls for setting changes where Instagram provides them. The exact controls shown depend on the teen’s age, country, account state, and rollout.
Family Center and newer safety features
Meta describes Family Center as a place for parents to manage supervised experiences across Instagram, Meta Horizon, Facebook, and Messenger. In June 2026, Meta also described alerts for supervising parents when repeated searches related to suicide or self-harm were detected. At that announcement, those alerts had rolled out to supervising parents in the European Union, Brazil, and India; do not assume they are available elsewhere or that every search will generate an alert.
An alert is a prompt to check in, not proof of intent or a replacement for immediate help. If a teen may be in immediate danger, contact local emergency services or a qualified crisis service rather than waiting for an app notification.

When a setting or feature is missing
- The account is not identified as a Teen Account: check the date of birth, update Instagram, sign out and back in, and look for an age or account-status notice. Do not alter age information to obtain a different experience.
- The private-account switch is different from the expected default: check whether the teen is under 16, whether the account existed before the current protections, and whether another approved follower is being confused with public visibility. Confirm the actual profile view from a non-follower account only with the teen’s knowledge.
- A parent cannot send or accept an invitation: confirm both accounts are on current app versions, both people meet the in-app age requirements, and no other parent is already connected. Reopen the supervision prompt rather than using an unofficial workaround.
- Menus do not match this guide: use Instagram’s settings search for “supervision,” “privacy,” “messages,” or “sensitive content.” Meta changes navigation and may test different labels, so an exact tap path from an older article can be wrong.
- A message or comment bypasses filters: save evidence if safe, then block, restrict, report, and review follower, message, tag, mention, and Hidden Words settings together. Filtering is a reduction tool, not a complete moderation guarantee.
- A new rollout option appears: read the in-app explanation and check the teen’s country and age before changing it. A feature announced as global or rolling out may still be unavailable, partially enabled, or labeled differently on a particular account.
A practical review schedule
At initial setup
- Confirm the birth date and Teen Account status.
- Check private profile status and remove unfamiliar existing followers.
- Review messages, tags, mentions, Hidden Words, and sensitive-content controls.
- Confirm the 60-minute reminder and Sleep mode schedule.
- Decide together whether consent-based supervision is appropriate.
After an app update or account change
- Search settings again for each control instead of assuming its old location.
- Check whether a new 13+ content or Family Center feature is available in the account’s region.
- Review connected followers, recent messaging contacts, and any changed notification schedule.
After an incident
- Preserve relevant usernames, dates, and screenshots without forwarding harmful material unnecessarily.
- Block or restrict the account, report the behavior, and reassess message, tag, mention, and Hidden Words settings.
- Use supervision’s contact and time controls if the family has agreed to supervision, while remembering that they do not expose message contents.
What parents should and should not expect
Teen Accounts provide protective defaults without requiring a parent to monitor every conversation. Supervision is more limited than message-monitoring software by design: it can show recent messaging contacts for seven days and help manage time or setting changes, but it cannot open the messages. Parents should therefore combine the controls with regular, non-punitive conversations about unknown contacts, privacy, reporting, scams, location sharing, and how to ask for help.
The most reliable check is the account itself. Open the current Instagram app with the teen, search for each control, and confirm what is enabled today. Meta’s product announcements describe the intended defaults, while the app’s live prompts determine which options this particular account can use.
