To hide your IP address while browsing in Safari, turn on Private Relay in iCloud settings on each iPhone, iPad, or Mac you use. On iPhone or iPad, open Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay and switch it on. On Mac, open Apple menu > System Settings > [your name] > iCloud > Private Relay and switch it on. You need access to iCloud+, either through your own subscription or a Family Sharing group.

Private Relay uses two separate relays to prevent one party from knowing both your identity and the websites you visit. It is designed mainly for Safari web browsing and DNS requests, not as a whole-device VPN.

What you need before enabling Private Relay

Private Relay is an iCloud+ feature, so the Apple Account signed in on the device must have iCloud+ access. A subscription shared through Family Sharing also qualifies. If your family organizer pays for iCloud+, you can use Private Relay while signed in to the participating Apple Account; you do not need to buy a second plan for every device or family member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no accessory, special router, replacement device, browser extension, or consumable required. Buying a new iPhone, iPad, or Mac solely to obtain Private Relay would not make sense: the feature is a setting for supported devices you already own. The relevant cost is access to iCloud+, but Apple’s plan names, pricing, and availability can vary by country, so check your Apple Account’s current iCloud+ options rather than relying on an old price list.

Other Apple platform visionOS 1 or later is listed in Apple’s security documentation
Regional availability Private Relay is not offered in every country or region
Device sign-in The device must be signed in to the Apple Account that has iCloud+ access

Apple’s current requirements and availability can change by operating-system release and location. Check Apple’s Private Relay overview and the guide for your device if the option is missing. A software update may be necessary before the control appears.

Turn on Private Relay on an iPhone or iPad

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap [your name] at the top of the screen.
  3. Tap iCloud.
  4. Tap Private Relay.
  5. Turn on Private Relay.

These are the controls Apple documents in its iCloud setup guide. The switch applies to that iPhone or iPad; repeat the process on each other device where you want the protection. An iPhone and iPad can use the same Apple Account and still have different Private Relay states.

After switching it on, remain in the Private Relay screen long enough to confirm that the control stays enabled. If it immediately turns off, check your iCloud+ entitlement, software version, country or region, and the network troubleshooting steps later in this guide.

Change the IP address location on iPhone or iPad

In the same Private Relay screen, tap IP Address Location. You can choose between two levels of location precision:

  • Maintain General Location: keeps your approximate area so Safari can continue to provide locally relevant content.
  • Use Country and Time Zone: gives websites a broader location based on your country and time zone rather than your general area.

Apple describes these choices in its iPhone Private Relay guide. The second option provides more geographic obscurity, while the first is more useful when local results matter. You can change this preference later without turning Private Relay off.

Turn on Private Relay on a Mac

  1. Choose Apple menu in the top-left corner.
  2. Open System Settings.
  3. Click [your name].
  4. Click iCloud.
  5. Find Private Relay and turn it on.

Apple’s device setup instructions show the same path. Select Options beside Private Relay to change the IP address location setting. The Mac setting is independent of your iPhone and iPad settings, so enable it on every Mac you use.

If several people use one Mac, the setting follows the signed-in Apple Account and that Mac’s iCloud configuration. Check the account name in System Settings before troubleshooting a missing subscription or switch.

How iCloud Private Relay hides your IP address

Private Relay separates the information needed to identify you from the information needed to reach a website. Apple describes the process as two relays rather than one server that handles everything.

  1. Your network and Apple’s first relay: your network provider and the first relay can see your device’s IP address. The DNS request—the lookup that converts a website name into a network address—is encrypted, so those parties cannot read the website name you requested.
  2. A second relay operated by a third-party content provider: this relay decrypts the website name and creates a temporary IP address for the connection to the site. It does not receive your original identifying IP address from the first relay.

Because the two relays have different pieces of information, Apple says no single party, including Apple, can see both who you are and which sites you visit. Apple’s exact description is: “iCloud Private Relay is designed to protect your privacy by ensuring that when you browse the web in Safari, no single party – not even Apple – can see both who you are and what sites you’re visiting.” Read the full explanation in About iCloud Private Relay.

The temporary address is not your ordinary home, office, or cellular IP address. It is generated for the relay connection, while the location option controls how closely it corresponds to your general area. This is why a site may see a different address or location after Private Relay is enabled even though you have not changed networks.

What Private Relay protects—and what it does not

Safari browsing and DNS requests

The documented protection applies primarily to web browsing in Safari and to DNS name-resolution requests associated with that browsing. Websites receive a temporary relay-generated IP address instead of your normal network IP address, and the DNS information is encrypted from the first part of the connection.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This can reduce the ability of a network operator to associate a readable website name with your request and reduces the identifying IP information available to the site. It does not make you anonymous in every situation. Websites can still use their own account records, cookies, sign-in information, or other browser data to recognize a returning visitor.

Not a whole-device VPN

Do not treat Private Relay as a system-wide VPN. Apple does not describe it as routing every app’s traffic through the two relays, and the feature is centered on Safari web activity. Other apps can use their own network connections and privacy controls. If you need to understand what a particular app does, check that app’s documentation rather than assuming Private Relay covers it.

Likewise, do not promise that Private Relay changes the apparent source of every connection made by background services, games, mail clients, or third-party browsers. The supported scope is the Safari browsing path and related DNS requests described by Apple.

What your network can still know

Your network provider can see that your device is connecting to the network and can see your device’s IP address at the first relay. The relay design prevents it from seeing the DNS website name in that request, but it does not make the network connection itself invisible. A workplace, school, hotel, or mobile provider can still apply its own network policies and may restrict Private Relay traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Choose the right location setting

The location control changes how specific the temporary IP address appears to websites. It does not disable the two-relay design.

Setting Effect Best fit
Maintain General Location Preserves a general area for Safari while hiding your precise network IP Local news, nearby services, regional search results, and other location-sensitive browsing
Use Country and Time Zone Reports a broader location tied to your country and time zone Readers who prefer greater geographic obscurity and can accept less-local results

The wording is slightly different by device, but Apple documents the same two choices for iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Choose the first when local relevance is important, such as finding nearby services or seeing regional content. Choose the second when you would rather reveal only a broad country-and-time-zone context. Neither choice is a promise that a site will honor a particular city, language, catalog, or service area.

You can change the choice later in the Private Relay settings instead of turning the feature off. If a local website behaves unexpectedly after selecting the broader option, switch back to Maintain General Location before exposing your IP address.

When a website does not work with Private Relay

Some websites use IP filtering, monitoring, fraud controls, or rate limits. A relay-generated address can look different from the address those systems expect, which may trigger a block, an additional verification step, or a page that does not load correctly. This is a compatibility issue, not proof that the two-relay protection has stopped working.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Allow one Safari site to see your IP address temporarily

Use this only for the site that is having trouble; it does not require disabling Private Relay everywhere.

  1. On iPhone or iPad, open the site in Safari.
  2. Open Safari’s Page Menu.
  3. Choose Show IP Address, if that command is available.
  4. Reload the page and complete the task.

On Mac, open the site in Safari and choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. Apple documents both procedures in Manage iCloud Private Relay for specific websites, networks or system settings. Showing the address lets that site observe your IP for the browsing session, so use it as a compatibility exception rather than a default. When finished, navigate away or reload normally so future browsing does not retain an unnecessary exception.

Fix an incompatible Wi-Fi or mobile network

Apple also provides a Limit IP Address Tracking control for networks that do not work correctly with Private Relay. If a particular Wi-Fi or mobile network reports incompatibility, use that network’s Limit IP Address Tracking setting as described in Apple’s troubleshooting guide. On a network-specific screen, turning the control off can restore access, but it reduces privacy on that connection.

Test methodically: first reload the site, then try another Wi-Fi or cellular connection, and only then consider changing the network control. A different network can show whether the problem is caused by the local router or provider rather than by your Apple Account or device. Work and school administrators may also intentionally block the feature, in which case their network policy takes precedence.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Understand the privacy trade-off before disabling anything

If you turn off Private Relay or disable Limit IP Address Tracking, your network provider and websites can monitor Safari activity more directly. Apple specifically warns about this trade-off. Re-enable the protection after finishing the site or network task if you only needed a temporary exception. Do not leave a broad network-level setting disabled merely because one site needed a visible IP address.

Why the Private Relay switch may be missing

  • No iCloud+ access: confirm that the Apple Account shown in Settings or System Settings has iCloud+ or receives it through Family Sharing. A regular Apple Account without iCloud+ will not show the feature as available.
  • Unsupported software: update the device and check the applicable iOS, iPadOS, macOS, or visionOS requirement. Apple’s security documentation lists macOS 12.0.1 or later and visionOS 1 or later, while its general overview gives broader platform requirements.
  • Unsupported country or region: Private Relay is not available everywhere. Apple’s availability can differ by region, so consult the current Apple overview rather than relying on a list from another date.
  • Network restriction: a work, school, hotel, or mobile network may block or limit the feature. Test another network and consult Apple’s network troubleshooting instructions.
  • Wrong Apple Account: a device can be signed in to a different account from the one that owns the iCloud+ plan. Verify the account name before changing network settings.

Apple says Private Relay turns off automatically when you are in a region where it is unavailable and turns on again when you return to a supported region. That behavior can make the switch appear inconsistent if you travel. A temporary disappearance while abroad does not necessarily mean your subscription has ended.

Check that it is active

After enabling the feature, browse a few sites in Safari and look for the expected behavior: sites should not receive your ordinary network IP address, and Safari’s DNS requests should be handled through the relay design. A site may still identify you through an account or cookie, so an unchanged login experience does not by itself indicate failure.

If a site reports a problem, use its temporary Show IP Address exception rather than assuming the entire feature has failed. You can also compare behavior on another network, confirm the Private Relay switch remains on, and check whether the region currently supports the service.

Remember that activation is device-specific. Turning Private Relay on for an iPhone does not automatically turn it on for an iPad or Mac, even when all devices use the same Apple Account. Make a short checklist of each Apple device you use and verify the setting individually.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Practical limits to keep in mind

  • Private Relay’s main scope is Safari web browsing and related DNS requests.
  • It separates identity from destination through two relays; it does not promise that no network can see any connection metadata.
  • The temporary IP address can affect websites that depend on precise IP reputation, allowlists, filtering, or rate limits.
  • Location choices balance local relevance against broader geographic privacy.
  • Country and regional availability can change, and the feature may switch off automatically where it is unsupported.
  • A site-specific IP exception and a network-level Limit IP Address Tracking change both reduce privacy and should be temporary when possible.
  • Private Relay does not require a dedicated physical product, and it should not be confused with a replacement for controls inside individual apps.

For supported Apple devices with iCloud+ access, the setup is a short iCloud setting change. The important decision after switching it on is whether to keep a general location for local content or use the broader country-and-time-zone option, and whether a compatibility problem justifies a temporary IP-address exception.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does iCloud Private Relay hide my IP address on every app?

No. Apple describes Private Relay primarily for Safari web browsing and related DNS requests. It is not a system-wide VPN, so do not assume that traffic from every app, browser, or background service uses the relays.

Can I use Private Relay if someone else in my family pays for iCloud+?

Yes, when your Apple Account participates in the Family Sharing group that provides iCloud+. Confirm that the device is signed in to that participating account.

Which IP Address Location option should I choose?

Choose Maintain General Location when local search results and nearby services matter. Choose Use Country and Time Zone when you prefer broader geographic obscurity and can accept less-specific local results.

Why does a website ask me to verify myself after I enable Private Relay?

Some sites use IP filtering, fraud checks, monitoring, or rate limits. A relay-generated address may trigger a challenge or block. In Safari, you can temporarily choose Show IP Address for that site if the command is available.

How do I let one website see my IP without turning off Private Relay everywhere?

On iPhone or iPad, open the site in Safari, open the Page Menu, and choose Show IP Address. On Mac, choose View > Reload and Show IP Address. This exposes your address to that site for the session.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is Limit IP Address Tracking?

It is a network-specific control Apple provides when a Wi-Fi or mobile network is incompatible with Private Relay. Turning it off can restore access but lets the network and websites monitor Safari activity more directly.

Does Private Relay work in every country?

No. Apple does not offer it in every country or region. It can turn off automatically in an unsupported region and turn on again when you return to a supported one.

Do I need a VPN app, router, or new Apple device to use Private Relay?

No. You need a supported Apple device and iCloud+ access. Private Relay is built into the operating system; no accessory, replacement device, or separate VPN app is required for this feature.

The Bottom Line

Turn on Private Relay separately in iCloud settings on each supported iPhone, iPad, and Mac. Keep Maintain General Location for useful local results or choose Use Country and Time Zone for broader location privacy. If a site or network is incompatible, use a temporary IP-address exception or network setting only when necessary, then restore the stronger protection.
