The dependable pattern is a root-owned script that runs mysqldump with an option file, writes a compressed dump to a directory outside the web root, keeps only the retention window you need, and runs at minute zero of every hour. Treat that local dump as one layer: copy important files off the VPS, monitor failures and disk space, and regularly restore a file in an isolated MySQL instance to prove it works.

What an hourly MySQL backup actually provides

mysqldump makes a logical backup: SQL statements that recreate database objects and table data. The resulting .sql file is portable and easy to inspect, but restoring it means MySQL must execute all of those statements. It is different from a physical backup, which copies database files in their original format and is generally intended for very large installations or short recovery-time objectives.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

An hourly schedule limits the amount of recent work you can lose if the latest usable dump is healthy. It does not by itself provide point-in-time recovery, protect against a compromised VPS, or prove that a dump can be restored. A complete policy also defines retention, off-site copies, binary-log handling, monitoring, and restore tests.

Choose the backup method before scheduling it

Method How it works Best fit Important trade-offs
mysqldump Logical SQL statements, optionally compressed after they are generated. Small to medium databases, straightforward hourly jobs, and administrators who value broad availability and simple files. Usually serial and can take a long time to load as the database grows. Restore duration depends on SQL execution and indexes.
MySQL Shell dump utilities Logical dump and load utilities with parallelism, progress reporting, compression options, and cloud-oriented workflows. Larger logical databases where a single-threaded dump or load no longer meets the recovery window. More operational complexity than a single mysqldump command; confirm the Shell version and features supported by your server.
MySQL Enterprise Backup Physical backup tooling that copies data in its native format and supports enterprise backup workflows. Large instances and recovery-time objectives that make logical export and import too slow. Commercial licensing or subscription terms apply, and the operational model differs from SQL dumps.

For an ordinary Linux VPS, start with mysqldump when the dump can finish comfortably inside an hour and the resulting restore time is acceptable. Move to parallel logical or physical tooling when database size, dump duration, load duration, or recovery objectives make that assumption false.

Plan retention, storage and recovery targets

  • Retention: decide how many hourly files and how many days of history you need. Retention is a policy choice, not a universal number. Keep enough copies to cover the period in which an unnoticed corruption or deletion could be discovered.
  • Location: write to a directory outside the web root, with permissions that prevent the web server and unprivileged users from reading dumps. A dump can contain every row, including secrets stored by your application.
  • Off-site protection: copy selected dumps to a separate host or object-storage bucket. A second copy on the same VPS does not protect against disk failure, account compromise, or a destroyed server.
  • Recovery point: hourly dumps alone leave a gap between runs. If you need recovery to an exact time, retain binary logs for that window and coordinate their retention with replicas and any purge process.
  • Recovery time: measure how long a representative dump takes to restore. A job that completes hourly but takes six hours to load is not suitable for a short recovery-time objective.

Create a least-privilege MySQL backup account

Do not run scheduled exports with the application owner or an unrestricted administrative account. Create a dedicated account and grant access only to the databases it must export. MySQL documentation identifies SELECT, SHOW VIEW, and TRIGGER as baseline privileges for common dumps. Depending on server version and options, LOCK TABLES, PROCESS, and RELOAD (or the privileges needed for FLUSH_TABLES) can also be required, particularly for GTID, tablespace, or binary-log-related features.

Run the following as an administrator, replacing the database and account details. Use a long, unique password and restrict the account to the local host when the backup script runs on the same VPS:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
CREATE USER 'backup_hourly'@'localhost' IDENTIFIED BY 'use-a-long-random-secret';
GRANT SELECT, SHOW VIEW, TRIGGER ON `DB_NAME`.* TO 'backup_hourly'@'localhost';
-- Add only privileges required by the options and server version you use.
-- For scheduled events, grant the EVENT privilege if your server requires it.
FLUSH PRIVILEGES;

Test the account against the exact command you intend to schedule. If MySQL reports a missing privilege, add the narrowly required privilege rather than switching to an administrator account. If you add --source-data, --flush-logs, GTID options, or tablespace-related options, re-check the privilege requirements for your MySQL release.

Protect credentials with a client option file

Putting a password in a cron line exposes it through configuration files and, on some systems, process inspection. Store connection settings in a root-readable client option file instead. Create /root/.my.cnf:

cat > /root/.my.cnf <<'EOF'
[client]
user=backup_hourly
password=use-a-long-random-secret
host=localhost
# socket=/run/mysqld/mysqld.sock
EOF
chmod 600 /root/.my.cnf
chown root:root /root/.my.cnf

Use either host=localhost or the socket setting appropriate to the VPS; do not leave both pointing at different servers. Verify that root can connect without an interactive password prompt:

Install a root-owned hourly backup script

The example below exports one database, includes stored routines, events and triggers, compresses the stream, and publishes the file only after the complete pipeline succeeds. Change DB_NAME, BACKUP_DIR, and RETENTION_DAYS for your environment.

cat > /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup <<'EOF'
#!/bin/bash
set -Eeuo pipefail

DB_NAME='DB_NAME'
BACKUP_DIR='/var/backups/mysql'
RETENTION_DAYS=14
CREDENTIALS='/root/.my.cnf'

mkdir -p "$BACKUP_DIR"
chmod 700 "$BACKUP_DIR"

# UTC makes filenames unambiguous when the VPS or operators use another timezone.
STAMP="$(date -u +%Y%m%dT%H%M%SZ)"
FINAL="$BACKUP_DIR/${DB_NAME}-${STAMP}.sql.gz"
TEMP="${FINAL}.tmp"

cleanup() {
    rm -f -- "$TEMP"
}
trap cleanup EXIT

/usr/bin/mysqldump
  --defaults-extra-file="$CREDENTIALS"
  --single-transaction
  --routines
  --events
  --triggers
  --databases "$DB_NAME"
  | /usr/bin/gzip -c > "$TEMP"

# With pipefail enabled, this point is reached only when mysqldump and gzip succeed.
mv -f -- "$TEMP" "$FINAL"

# Delete old files only after a new, complete dump has been published.
find "$BACKUP_DIR" -maxdepth 1 -type f
  -name "${DB_NAME}-*.sql.gz"
  -mtime +"$RETENTION_DAYS" -delete

echo "Created $FINAL"
EOF
chown root:root /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup
chmod 700 /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup

set -o pipefail is included through set -Eeuo pipefail. Without it, a successful gzip could hide a failed mysqldump. The temporary filename prevents an interrupted run from looking like a finished backup, and the atomic mv makes the completed file visible as one operation. The cleanup trap removes a partial temporary file when the command fails.

The --single-transaction option is the normal choice for InnoDB. It takes a consistent transaction-level view while the server remains online and normally requires only a brief initial lock. It does not make nontransactional tables such as MyISAM consistent while they are being modified; identify those tables and choose a locking strategy that matches their workload.

--routines, --events, and --triggers preserve programmable objects that a data-only export would omit. --databases adds database creation and selection statements. For several databases, list each name after that option and use a filename convention that clearly identifies the group, or create separate jobs when retention and restore boundaries differ.

Schedule the job at the start of every hour

For a traditional cron installation, put this line in /etc/cron.d/mysql-hourly-backup:

0 * * * * root /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup >> /var/log/mysql-hourly-backup.log 2>&1

The first field, 0, means minute zero; the asterisk in the hour field means every hour. The root field is required in an /etc/cron.d file. If you instead run crontab -e as root, omit that field:

0 * * * * /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup >> /var/log/mysql-hourly-backup.log 2>&1

Make the log root-readable and arrange rotation so it cannot fill the disk. On systems using systemd, send output to the journal and use a timer instead of cron:

cat > /etc/systemd/system/mysql-hourly-backup.service <<'EOF'
[Unit]
Description=Hourly MySQL logical backup

[Service]
Type=oneshot
ExecStart=/usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup
EOF

cat > /etc/systemd/system/mysql-hourly-backup.timer <<'EOF'
[Unit]
Description=Run the MySQL backup every hour

[Timer]
OnCalendar=hourly
Persistent=true

[Install]
WantedBy=timers.target
EOF

systemctl daemon-reload
systemctl enable --now mysql-hourly-backup.timer
systemctl start mysql-hourly-backup.service
journalctl -u mysql-hourly-backup.service

Persistent=true allows a missed run to be triggered after the machine returns, depending on the timer state. Whichever scheduler you choose, alert on a nonzero exit status and investigate jobs that do not produce a new timestamped file. Prevent overlapping runs if a dump can approach an hour; a lock around the script or a scheduler-specific concurrency control avoids two exports competing for CPU, disk and database I/O.

Verify the first run before relying on it

  1. Run the script manually as root and confirm that it exits successfully: /usr/local/sbin/mysql-hourly-backup.
  2. List the destination and inspect ownership, mode and size: ls -l /var/backups/mysql/. A zero-byte or unexpectedly tiny file is a failure signal even if the scheduler logged success.
  3. Check that the name contains a UTC timestamp and ends in .sql.gz, not .tmp.
  4. Read the compressed stream without writing a restore: gunzip -c /var/backups/mysql/DB_NAME-<timestamp>.sql.gz | head. A logical dump should begin with SQL comments or statements, not an error message.
  5. Run the scheduler’s service or cron entry once and confirm its log or journal records completion.
  6. Check free space with df -h. Compression reduces storage, but an export still needs room for the temporary file and the retained history.

Do not delete older files until the newly created dump has passed these checks. The script’s retention step is deliberately last for that reason.

Restore and prove a dump is usable

A backup is not proven until it has been restored and the resulting data has been checked. Use a disposable MySQL instance or an isolated database, not a production schema. The instance should be a compatible MySQL version and have enough disk space for both the compressed file and the expanded tables.

  1. Create an empty restore target and a restore account with the permissions needed to create the dumped objects. Keep this environment isolated from production credentials and application traffic.
  2. Restore the selected file:
gunzip -c /var/backups/mysql/DB_NAME-<timestamp>.sql.gz
  | mysql --defaults-extra-file=/root/.my.cnf RESTORE_DB

Because the sample dump uses --databases, it contains database creation and USE statements for the original name. Restore into the intended database name and test the result; if you need a different naming scheme, adjust the dump and restore procedure deliberately rather than assuming the final argument alone rewrites embedded SQL.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Require a zero exit status from both decompression and the MySQL client. For a stricter shell test, run the pipeline from a shell with set -o pipefail.
  2. Check that expected tables exist and that row counts for representative tables are plausible.
  3. Confirm that views, stored routines, events and triggers are present and compile correctly.
  4. Run application smoke queries against the isolated instance: authentication, a representative read, and a representative write if the test application supports it.
  5. Check users and grants separately. A data restore does not automatically recreate the production security model, and granting excessive privileges in the test environment can hide deployment problems.
  6. Record elapsed dump and restore times, the dump size, and any warnings. Those measurements determine whether an hourly logical job still meets your recovery objectives.

Repeat the restore on a schedule appropriate to the risk of the service. A one-time successful import does not protect you from a later broken script, expired credential, full disk, or silently incomplete off-site copy.

Add binary logs when point-in-time recovery matters

An hourly dump restores only to the time it was taken. To recover changes made after that file, retain binary logs and apply them after restoring the dump. The dump option --source-data can record binary-log coordinates in the SQL output, providing a starting position for point-in-time recovery. Options such as --flush-logs can change log rotation behavior and have additional privilege and operational implications.

Coordinate binary-log retention with replicas and recovery procedures. Never purge logs that a replica still needs or that fall inside your promised recovery window. Document the server’s binary-log format, retention setting, coordinate recorded by each dump, and the exact command sequence operators will use to stop at a chosen recovery time. Test that procedure on the same isolated environment used for dump restores.

Copy important dumps away from the VPS

After a local file is complete, transfer selected files to a separate host or an object-storage bucket. Use an encrypted transport, a destination account limited to backup operations, and a retention policy independent of the VPS. Verify the remote object size or checksum after transfer, and alert when the copy is missing or older than the allowed interval.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Keep at least one recovery copy protected from deletion by the VPS account that runs the backup. Object-storage features such as versioning or immutability can help, but configure and test them according to the provider’s current documentation. Do not expose a dump through a public URL or a web-server directory.

Common failures and their fixes

The cron job produces no file

  • Run the script manually and inspect the redirected log or systemd journal.
  • Use absolute paths, as cron has a smaller environment than an interactive shell.
  • Check that the cron file has the correct ownership and permissions and that the daemon is running.
  • Confirm that the server clock and UTC timestamp are what you expect.

Access denied or missing-table errors

  • Test the option file with mysql --defaults-extra-file=/root/.my.cnf -e 'SHOW DATABASES;'.
  • Verify the backup account’s grants for every selected database.
  • If routines, events, triggers, GTID, tablespace metadata or log operations are enabled, compare the error with the privileges required by your MySQL version and add only the missing permission.

The dump is inconsistent or blocks writes

  • Confirm that active tables are InnoDB when using --single-transaction.
  • Investigate nontransactional tables separately; they may require a lock or a different export strategy.
  • Inspect long-running transactions and metadata locks. A transaction-consistent dump still needs the server to obtain its initial consistent view.

The disk fills up

  • Check both the backup filesystem and the directory used for the temporary file.
  • Reduce retention only after establishing an off-site copy and an acceptable recovery window.
  • Measure compressed dump sizes and growth instead of assuming compression will remain constant.
  • Make the job fail visibly when free space is too low; never let it silently delete the only recent copy.

Two jobs run at once

A slow dump, a delayed VPS, or a manually started test can overlap the next hourly invocation. Add a lock so only one instance runs, or choose a scheduler mechanism with an explicit non-overlap policy. If dumps regularly approach the one-hour interval, reassess the method rather than merely increasing concurrency.

The restore fails partway through

  • Check the decompressor and MySQL exit statuses independently; a pipeline can otherwise hide which side failed.
  • Confirm that the target has enough disk space, compatible character sets and required SQL modes.
  • Review the first SQL error, correct the isolated environment or export options, and repeat the restore from a fresh empty target.
  • Do not mark the backup healthy until the complete import and application checks pass.

When to move beyond an hourly mysqldump

Continue with this pattern while dump duration, load duration, storage growth and lock behavior fit your service. Reconsider it when a dump cannot finish before the next scheduled run, when restoring the largest acceptable file exceeds the recovery-time objective, or when the database is large enough that serial SQL execution dominates an outage.

MySQL Shell dump utilities can provide parallel dump and load, compression and progress reporting while retaining a logical workflow. A physical product such as MySQL Enterprise Backup is designed for large-scale backup and restore where copying data files in their original format can restore faster. These tools introduce version, configuration and licensing decisions, so test them against the same restore-time and point-in-time requirements rather than choosing solely by dump speed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Operational checklist

  • Dedicated backup account with only the required privileges.
  • Credentials in a root-readable option file with mode 600, never in a cron command line.
  • Root-owned script outside the web root, using UTC names, compression, --single-transaction for InnoDB, and atomic publication.
  • Retention enforced only after a successful new dump.
  • Hourly scheduler with logs, nonzero-exit alerts and protection against overlapping runs.
  • Free-space monitoring for the backup filesystem and temporary-file location.
  • Selected dumps copied to a separate host or object-storage bucket and verified after transfer.
  • Binary logs retained for the promised point-in-time window, without breaking replicas.
  • Regular isolated restores that check schema objects, row counts, application queries and permissions.
  • Periodic review of dump and restore times as the database grows.
