Set up heart-rate zones by first matching your watch’s calculation method to the method used by your training plan, then verify the personal data behind the calculation. The exact menu is model-specific: review the current manual or companion app, check maximum and resting heart rate values, choose percentage-of-maximum, heart-rate-reserve, threshold, or manual BPM zones as appropriate, and test the display during a short run.

What you need to decide before changing any setting

Heart-rate zones are ranges used to control running intensity. A watch can calculate those ranges in several different ways, and two devices may show different BPM boundaries for the same runner while both are behaving correctly. The important result is not simply seeing five colored zones; it is having the watch use the same zone basis as your training plan.

Find the exact watch model and software instructions

Start with the model name printed in the watch settings or on its original documentation. Open the manufacturer’s current manual or support page for that model before following a menu path. Menu labels, available calculation methods, and whether zones can be separated by sport can change between models and software versions.

Check the personal data used by the watch

Depending on the platform, zone calculations can use your date of birth, maximum heart rate, resting heart rate, threshold heart rate, or a combination of these values. An incorrect maximum heart rate can shift every zone. A missing or stale resting heart rate can affect heart-rate-reserve calculations. Check these profile fields before trying to “fix” the resulting BPM values manually.

Identify the method in your training plan

Look for wording such as percent of maximum heart rate (%Max HR), heart-rate reserve (%HRR), threshold heart rate, or explicit BPM targets. These systems are not interchangeable. For example, entering a plan’s BPM boundaries while the watch is configured for %HRR can produce zones that do not represent the plan’s intended effort.

How the main zone methods differ

Method Personal input How boundaries are produced When it fits
%Max HR Maximum heart rate, sometimes taken from a profile or detected during activity Each zone is a percentage range of maximum heart rate Plans that publish targets as percentages of HRmax
%HRR Maximum heart rate and resting heart rate Uses the span between resting and maximum heart rate to individualize percentages Plans that explicitly specify heart-rate reserve
Threshold-based Threshold heart rate, usually obtained from a test or a known field/lab value Boundaries are placed around threshold intensity according to the platform’s zone model Plans written around lactate or functional threshold heart rate
Manual BPM Your own lower and upper BPM boundaries The watch displays the values you enter without converting them from another method Plans that provide fixed BPM ranges and watches that support direct editing

Support differs by model. The Garmin Forerunner 55 documents BPM, %Max HR, and %HRR options; COROS documents threshold, %Max HR, and %HRR choices; Apple Watch calculates zones from health data and also permits manual editing; and Polar’s general consumer guide presents a five-zone percentage-of-HRmax framework. These examples illustrate why the method must be named whenever you compare ranges.

Polar’s published five-zone example

Polar defines its reference zones as follows: Zone 1 is 50–60% of HRmax, Zone 2 is 60–70%, Zone 3 is 70–80%, Zone 4 is 80–90%, and Zone 5 is 90–100%. These are Polar’s vendor-defined training ranges, not a universal standard. Polar’s heart-rate-zone guide also emphasizes that heart rate is personal.

COROS documents a different threshold framework, including six zones. Its threshold Zone 2 is described as comfortable enough for conversation, but that label belongs to the COROS system and should not be assumed to match another watch’s Zone 2.

Universal setup workflow

  1. Identify the model. Open the watch’s About or System Information screen, note the exact model and software version, and open the current manual or support page for it.
  2. Review profile values. Check date of birth where applicable, maximum heart rate, resting heart rate, and any threshold value. Correct an obvious entry before editing zone boundaries.
  3. Select the plan’s basis. Choose %Max HR, %HRR, threshold zones, or manual BPM only after confirming which system the plan uses.
  4. Choose a sport profile. If the watch supports sport-specific zones, open the running or running-related profile rather than changing a general setting blindly. A cycling profile can legitimately use different targets from running.
  5. Enter or review boundaries. Save the automatically calculated values or type the boundaries supplied by your plan when manual BPM is supported. Confirm that the number of zones and their order match the plan.
  6. Test during a run. Start a run, open the heart-rate-zone data screen, and check that the current zone changes as expected. If your watch provides zone alerts, set the alert only after confirming the boundaries.

If the numbers look implausible, return to the input data and calculation basis first. Some ecosystems provide a guided test or recalculation feature, but that functionality is not universal, so check the documentation for your exact model before prescribing a test.

Garmin Forerunner 55: documented device path

The January 2026 version 9 owner’s manual for the Garmin Forerunner 55 documents profile-based defaults, separate zones by sport profile, and manual adjustment on the watch or in Garmin Connect. The following path is specific to that documented model and manual; it is not a universal path for every Garmin device.

  1. From the watch face, hold UP.
  2. Choose User Profile.
  3. Select Heart Rate.
  4. Enter Max. HR and, if desired, Resting HR.
  5. Choose Zones, then Based On.
  6. Select BPM, %Max. HR, or %HRR.
  7. Enter or review the zone values and save them. If you use separate running settings, make sure the running sport profile is the one being edited.

The manual also describes Auto Detect, which can record maximum heart rate during an activity. Treat an automatically detected value as a device feature to review, not as proof that every watch will detect maximum heart rate in the same way. The official path and options are in the Forerunner 55 owner’s manual.

Apple Watch: automatic zones and manual editing

Apple states that “Heart Rate Zones are a percentage of your maximum heart rate and are automatically calculated and personalized using your health data.” A date of birth must be present in the iPhone Health app for this calculation. Apple’s instructions apply to Apple Watch and its paired iPhone, not to other watch platforms.

View zones during a run

  1. Start a cardio-focused workout such as Outdoor Run.
  2. During the workout, turn the Digital Crown until the heart-rate-zone view appears.
  3. Observe the current zone while changing pace. This confirms that the zone screen is available and updating; it does not by itself validate the accuracy of your maximum heart rate.

Edit zones on the watch

  1. Open Settings on Apple Watch.
  2. Choose Workout.
  3. Tap Heart Rate Zones.
  4. Select Manual.
  5. Edit zones 2, 3, or 4, then save.

Edit zones from the iPhone

In the iPhone Watch app, go to My Watch > Workout > Heart Rate Zones. Review the automatically calculated values or switch to manual editing where available. Apple’s complete instructions are in its Heart Rate Zones guide.

COROS: threshold defaults and the Running Fitness Test

COROS documents personalized threshold heart-rate and pace zones as its default setting, with options to edit zones or choose maximum-heart-rate or heart-rate-reserve zones. The exact menu labels can vary by watch and app version, so use the current COROS support instructions for your model when applying the setting.

When to use the threshold system

Choose the threshold system when your training plan is written around threshold heart rate rather than simple percentages of HRmax. Do not copy a percentage-based plan into threshold zones merely because both displays use the word “Zone.”

Running Fitness Test

COROS describes a guided Running Fitness Test as a challenging outdoor run lasting 25–40 minutes. The test updates threshold pace, threshold heart rate, and maximum heart rate. It is a COROS-specific feature description, not a general requirement for setting up zones on every running watch. Follow the watch’s safety prompts and only perform a hard test when you are medically cleared and prepared for that intensity.

For details on the available methods and test behavior, consult COROS Fitness Metrics. The page’s conversational description of threshold Zone 2 is useful for understanding that system, but it should not be treated as a universal definition.

Polar: use the published framework, but distinguish consumer and team tools

Polar’s general guide presents five zones as percentages of HRmax and explains that heart rate is personal. If your plan uses that framework, verify the maximum heart rate behind the watch’s calculation before accepting the displayed boundaries.

Polar Team Pro documentation separately describes editing zones by sport profile in its team service and personalizing them with a laboratory-measured HRmax or a field test. Those instructions are for Team Pro and should not be presented as menu steps for every consumer Polar watch. Read the Polar Team Pro heart-rate-zone manual only when you are using that service.

How to verify the setup on an actual run

Check the zone number and BPM together

Display both current heart rate and zone number if your watch allows it. A zone label without BPM can hide a method mismatch. Compare the watch’s boundary with the target in your plan while standing still, then repeat the check after warming up.

Test alerts conservatively

Use a low-stakes easy run to confirm that an upper or lower alert triggers at the intended boundary. Alerts are useful only after the zone basis and inputs are correct; otherwise they can repeatedly push you toward the wrong intensity.

Confirm the running profile

Start the same sport profile you edited. If the watch supports separate sport zones, a change made for cycling, indoor running, or another activity may not appear in the outdoor running profile.

Troubleshooting implausible zones

Every boundary is too high or too low

  • Recheck maximum heart rate and date of birth.
  • Confirm whether the watch is using %Max HR, %HRR, threshold, or manual BPM.
  • Compare the selected method with the training plan’s wording.

Only heart-rate-reserve zones look wrong

  • Verify resting heart rate is present and current.
  • Check that the watch has not reverted to a default resting value after a profile change.
  • Recalculate only if your model documents a recalculation or test process.

The values change after an update or test

Some platforms update profile values or thresholds automatically. Review the date and result of the change, then decide whether the updated method still matches your plan. Do not lock in manually typed numbers until you know which automatic process changed them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The watch shows a different number of zones

Zone counts are part of the method. Polar’s cited reference has five zones, while COROS documents a six-zone threshold framework. A six-zone display is not automatically wrong, and a five-zone display is not automatically compatible with a six-zone plan. Translate targets only when the plan and device use compatible definitions.

The displayed heart rate itself seems unreliable

Before changing zone boundaries, check the sensor fit, contact with the skin, and whether the reading settles during an easy warm-up. If the underlying heart-rate reading is inconsistent, changing the zones only disguises the measurement problem.

Health and safety considerations

Heart-rate targets are not medical prescriptions. If you take medication that affects heart rate or live with a heart condition, obtain individualized guidance from a healthcare professional before establishing target heart rates and exercising. Polar gives this advice in its general zone guidance, and it applies regardless of which watch brand you use.

Stop and seek medical help for concerning symptoms such as chest pain, fainting, or unusual severe breathlessness. A watch’s zone color cannot determine whether an effort is safe for you.

A reliable decision rule

Use the simplest configuration that preserves the plan’s intended method. If the plan says “70–80% of max heart rate,” choose %Max HR and verify maximum heart rate. If it says “heart-rate reserve,” use %HRR and verify both maximum and resting heart rate. If it provides threshold-heart-rate zones, select the threshold system or enter compatible manual BPM values. If it gives fixed BPM ranges, use manual BPM only when the watch supports it and the ranges are intended for that watch’s zone count.

After saving, confirm the running profile, observe the zones on an easy run, and revisit the inputs whenever your watch reports an automatic update. This approach prevents the most common error: a watch that is technically configured but uses a different zone basis from the workouts you are trying to follow.
