Prepare your PS5 or Xbox Series X|S, HDMI connection, and HDR display now, but do not assume that GTA 6 will render at 120 frames per second. Rockstar has confirmed the game for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S with a November 19, 2026 release date; its published material has not yet specified GTA 6’s final 120Hz, 120fps, HDR, or performance-mode options. The steps below enable the highest compatible console output so the game can use supported display features when Rockstar documents them.
What the setup can—and cannot—guarantee
GTA 6 is officially announced for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. Rockstar’s product page describes the game as “Plays Best On PlayStation 5,” while Xbox lists the November 19, 2026 release date. Those platform and date details do not constitute a performance specification.
A 120Hz console signal and 120fps game rendering are different things. The PS5 and Xbox settings make a 120Hz output available to games that support a 120Hz frame rate. A game can still render at 30 or 60fps while the console or display is operating in a 120Hz-capable mode. Rockstar has not published a GTA 6-specific frame-rate mode in the cited official material, so any claim that the game will run at 120fps is premature.

HDR is also a chain rather than a single switch. The console, HDMI cable, HDMI input, display firmware, display processing, and game must all negotiate compatible settings. If one link falls back to a lower capability, you may see SDR, 60Hz, a reduced resolution, or no signal.

Check these requirements before changing settings
- Console: a PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X, or Xbox Series S. The announced game platforms are PS5 and Xbox Series X|S; older PlayStation and Xbox generations are not listed in the cited announcement.
- Display: a television or monitor that supports HDR and 120Hz. A display that supports only 60Hz cannot show a 120Hz signal regardless of console settings.
- HDMI input: use the display port identified by its manufacturer as supporting HDMI 2.1, 4K/120Hz, or the equivalent specification. Some televisions have only one or two ports with the full capability.
- Cable: use the HDMI cable supplied with the PS5 or an Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120Hz. For Xbox, use a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable and confirm the cable is connected directly to the console and the display during testing.
- Firmware: update the console and the display. TV firmware can affect 4K/120Hz negotiation, HDR, and variable-refresh support.
- Signal path: temporarily remove an AV receiver, HDMI switch, soundbar passthrough, capture device, or adapter when diagnosing a problem. Each intermediate device must support the same resolution, refresh rate, HDR format, and bandwidth.
Do not judge the cable by its connector shape alone. HDMI 2.1-capable equipment and an Ultra High Speed cable are needed for the full 4K/120Hz path; a cable that works at 4K/60Hz may still fail when 120Hz is selected.
Set up HDR and 120Hz on PS5
Complete these steps with the PS5 connected directly to the display’s HDMI 2.1 input.
- Open the video-output controls. From the PS5 home screen, go to Settings > Screen and Video > Video Output.
- Choose the resolution. Set Resolution to Automatic so the console selects the highest mode reported by the display. On a compatible 4K display, you can select 2160p explicitly.
- Enable 120Hz output. Turn 120 Hz Output on. Sony describes this as enabling 120Hz video output for televisions and games that support a 120Hz frame rate; it does not force every game to render at 120fps.
- Set HDR behavior. Set HDR to On When Supported. This keeps non-HDR games and applications in SDR instead of applying HDR output indiscriminately.
- Run the console calibration. Select Adjust HDR and follow all on-screen calibration screens. Perform the adjustment in the display mode you will use for games, with Game Mode enabled if your display has it.
- Choose optional VRR. If the display supports variable refresh rate and you want variable-refresh behavior, enable VRR in the same video-output area. Results vary by television, monitor, and game, so treat VRR as an optional compatibility feature rather than a guarantee of a particular frame rate.
- Confirm the negotiated signal. After applying the settings, check the display’s information panel or input banner for a 4K, HDR, and 120Hz signal. The exact on-screen wording is display-specific.
Sony’s support guidance summarizes the automatic-selection behavior this way: “Your PS5® console detects your TV’s capabilities and automatically selects the best available resolution.” If the display reports a lower mode, the console is responding to what it detects through the current cable and HDMI path; it is not evidence that GTA 6 has imposed a lower limit.

PS5 settings that commonly cause confusion
- Resolution set to Automatic: this is normally the safest choice because the console negotiates with the display. Selecting 2160p is useful only when you know the display can accept it.
- HDR set to Always On: this can send HDR output to SDR games and apps. Use On When Supported when you want SDR content to remain SDR.
- 120 Hz Output enabled but no 120Hz signal: the toggle only advertises the capability to compatible games and displays. It does not create a 120fps mode in a game that lacks one.
- VRR enabled: variable refresh may improve smoothness when a game supports it, but the visible result depends on the display and the game’s implementation.
Set up HDR and 120Hz on Xbox Series X|S
Xbox menu wording can change with system updates, so use the display settings and the 4K TV details screen as the authoritative check for what your current console and display report.
- Connect directly for the first test. Plug the Xbox into the display’s HDMI 2.1-capable input with a suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable. Check the television or monitor manual because manufacturers label HDMI 2.1 inputs differently.
- Open display settings. In the Xbox display settings, choose the highest supported 4K resolution for the connected screen and enable HDR. The exact labels can change with Xbox system updates.
- Inspect 4K TV details. Open 4K TV details. This screen reports which combinations of resolution, HDR, and refresh rate the display accepts through the current connection. Use it to identify whether 4K/120Hz and HDR are actually available rather than relying on the television’s advertised maximum.
- Enable 120Hz only after confirmation. Select the 120Hz refresh option only when 4K TV details reports 120Hz support. If the screen blanks, loses HDR, or drops resolution, return to 60Hz before troubleshooting the cable, port, firmware, or intermediate equipment.
- Enable Game Mode on the display. Game Mode generally removes extra processing and is the appropriate baseline for latency and consistent HDR. The setting is on the television or monitor, not in the Xbox menu.
- Verify the input information. Use the display’s signal-information panel and Xbox’s 4K TV details page together. The two checks should agree on the active resolution, HDR status, and refresh rate.
Rockstar Games Customer Support states, “You can troubleshoot your HDR by reviewing your TV or platform setup and settings.” That guidance is important because an HDR problem can originate outside the game itself.
Xbox-specific fallback procedure
If 120Hz causes a blank screen or an unexpected resolution change, set the console back to 60Hz, power-cycle the display and console, update the display firmware, and reconnect the Xbox directly to the display. Recheck 4K TV details before trying 120Hz again. Do not add a receiver or switch back into the chain until the direct connection works; adding equipment makes it harder to identify which component rejected the signal.

Configure the television or monitor for accurate HDR
Use Game Mode first
Select the display’s Game Mode before calibrating HDR or judging image quality. Rockstar recommends disabling AI, Smart, Dynamic, or Adaptive enhancement features and Dynamic Tone Mapping for its recommended setup. These processing modes can alter brightness, contrast, sharpening, or latency and make the console calibration no longer match the displayed image.
Disable competing tone mapping
Dynamic Tone Mapping can remap highlights after the console has already calibrated HDR. Disable it for the baseline setup described by Rockstar. If your display offers HGIG, enable HGIG when supported. HGIG is a display-side option intended to keep game HDR tone mapping predictable, but the exact controls and naming vary by manufacturer.
Calibrate in the final viewing mode
Run Adjust HDR on PS5, or the equivalent Xbox HDR calibration controls, after selecting Game Mode and disabling the extra processing above. If you later switch to a different picture preset, reconnect through another HDMI port, or change major tone-mapping options, repeat the calibration so the console’s reference points match the new mode.

How to verify that the signal is ready for GTA 6
Before the game’s release, the goal is to verify the console-to-display path, not to prove a game-specific frame rate.
- Resolution: the console and display should report the intended 4K mode when the display supports it.
- Refresh rate: the display’s information panel should report 120Hz when the console is set to 120Hz and the connection accepts it.
- HDR: the display should switch into its HDR picture mode or identify HDR in its signal information when HDR content is active.
- Game Mode: the display should show the selected low-latency gaming preset.
- VRR: if enabled, confirm that the display reports variable refresh; the presence of the setting does not establish that every game will use it.
A menu showing 120Hz capability is not the same as a game rendering at 120fps. Wait for Rockstar’s final GTA 6 technical details before treating any in-game performance mode as confirmed.

Troubleshoot the most common failures
The PS5 is stuck at 60Hz
- Confirm that the display itself supports 120Hz at the resolution you selected. Some screens support 120Hz only at a lower resolution.
- Move the PS5 to the HDMI 2.1 input identified in the display manual.
- Use the supplied PS5 cable or a certified Ultra High Speed HDMI cable rated for 4K/120Hz.
- Set Resolution to Automatic, keep Video Transfer Rate on Auto, and turn 120 Hz Output on.
- Update the display firmware and PS5 system software.
- Disconnect receivers, switches, soundbars, and capture devices, then test the PS5 directly on the display.
If the direct connection still reports 60Hz, the limitation is likely the display’s supported combination, the selected port, the cable, or a firmware negotiation issue—not an unannounced GTA 6 setting.

4K/120Hz is missing on Xbox
- Open 4K TV details and record which capability is failing: 4K, HDR, or 120Hz.
- Return the refresh rate to 60Hz if the screen blanks or resolution falls back.
- Try the display’s HDMI 2.1 input and the Xbox cable or another suitable Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Update the display firmware and restart both devices.
- Test with a direct Xbox-to-display connection before restoring an AV receiver or HDMI switch.
HDR looks washed out, too dark, or inconsistent
- Set Game Mode, disable Dynamic Tone Mapping and AI, Smart, Dynamic, or Adaptive enhancements, and enable HGIG when the display supports it.
- Set PS5 HDR to On When Supported rather than Always On, then run Adjust HDR again.
- Check that the display actually identifies the active signal as HDR.
- Use the same HDMI input and picture preset during calibration and gameplay. A different preset can apply a different tone curve.
The screen goes black after selecting 120Hz
Return to 60Hz, power-cycle the console and display, and retest with a direct connection. A black screen usually indicates that some part of the HDMI chain cannot negotiate the selected combination. Do not repeatedly force 120Hz through an unverified receiver, switch, adapter, or cable.
Pre-purchase checklist for a GTA 6 display
If you are buying a display before launch, verify every item in the manual or specifications rather than relying on a generic “gaming” label:
- 4K resolution at the refresh-rate combination you intend to use.
- HDR support on the HDMI input you will connect to the console.
- 120Hz support at 4K, not only at a lower resolution or through a different input.
- An HDMI 2.1-capable input and an included or separately purchased Ultra High Speed HDMI cable.
- Game Mode with access to the display’s HDR controls.
- VRR support if you want variable-refresh behavior, while recognizing that game support still matters.
- Firmware-update support, because display manufacturers can change HDMI compatibility through updates.
For a receiver or switch in the setup, verify that it passes the same 4K, HDR, and 120Hz combination. Otherwise, connect the console directly and use a separate audio path while diagnosing the video signal.

What to do when GTA 6 launches
Once Rockstar publishes the game’s final display options, check its documented resolution, HDR, VRR, and frame-rate modes against the signal you already verified. If the game offers a 120fps mode, the console’s 120Hz setting and a confirmed 4K/120Hz HDMI path will allow that mode to operate when the display and game support the required combination. If the game offers only a lower frame-rate mode, leaving 120Hz enabled will not raise it to 120fps.
Until those game-specific details are published, the reliable preparation is straightforward: use the correct HDMI 2.1 input and Ultra High Speed cable, enable HDR using the platform’s supported setting, calibrate in Game Mode, verify the signal on the console and display, and treat 120Hz as output readiness rather than a promise about GTA 6 performance.
