Set up running data screens inside the Run activity profile on your Garmin watch: open the activity’s settings, choose Data Screens (or the model’s equivalent), select a screen and layout, then assign the fields you want to see. The exact menu path and available metrics depend on the watch model. For some older models, including the Forerunner 30 and 35, Garmin documents editing data fields in the Garmin Connect app instead.

What Garmin running data screens do

A data screen displays selected run metrics while you use the Run activity. Depending on the watch, you may be able to choose which screens appear, how many fields each screen shows, and which metric goes in each field. The practical goal is to put the information you need during a run where you can read it without unnecessary scrolling.

Configure the screens for the activity profile you intend to use. A screen set up for Run should not be assumed to change the screens for other activities. Garmin’s instructions are model-specific, and menu names, button presses, layouts, and available fields can differ from one watch to another.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Think of the setup as three related choices: which data pages are available, how each page is arranged, and what information occupies each field. A page with several small fields may put more metrics in view at once; a simpler page may make its main value easier to spot. The watch’s available options determine how much control you have over each choice.

Garmin Forerunner 55, GPS Running Watch with Daily Suggested Workouts, Up to 2 Weeks of Battery Life, Black - 010-02562-00
  • Easy-to-use running watch monitors heart rate (this is not a medical device) at the wrist and uses GPS to track how far, how fast and where you’ve run.Special Feature:Bluetooth.
  • Battery life: up to 2 weeks in smartwatch mode; up to 20 hours in GPS mode
  • Plan your race day strategy with the PacePro feature (not compatible with on-device courses), which offers GPS-based pace guidance for a selected course or distance
  • Run your best with helpful training tools, including race time predictions and finish time estimates
  • Track all the ways you move with built-in activity profiles for running, cycling, track run, virtual run, pool swim, Pilates, HIIT, breathwork and more

This is a way to tailor the activity display, not a promise that every Garmin watch offers the same collection of metrics. Pace, distance, elapsed time, heart rate, and cadence are examples of fields a runner might look for, but a field must be supported by the specific watch and activity profile to be selectable.

Set up data screens on the watch

For a current Forerunner example, Garmin’s support instructions use the Run activity’s settings and its Data Screens menu. Garmin cautions that instructions vary by model, so treat the following as the general sequence rather than a universal button-by-button path.

  1. Open the activity list and select Run. Start with the running profile whose screens you want to customize. If your watch offers more than one running-related activity profile, make sure you choose the one you actually plan to use; the settings you edit belong to the selected profile.
  2. Open the Run activity’s settings. Look for the profile settings associated with Run, not a general watch display setting. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 example places the data-screen configuration in the activity settings.
  3. Open Data Screens or the model’s equivalent. The precise label and location vary by watch. If you do not see that exact wording, do not assume the watch lacks customization; consult the instructions for your model and look for the equivalent activity data-field controls.
  4. Choose a screen. Select an existing data screen, or add one if your watch offers that option. Some models may expose choices for the number of pages; others may offer different controls. Do not expect a specific page count across the Garmin range.
  5. Select a layout. Choose how many fields to display and how they are arranged, using the layout choices available on that model. Consider whether the arrangement will let you pick out the metric you care about while moving, rather than simply maximizing the number of values on the page.
  6. Edit the fields. Select a field and choose an available metric, such as pace, distance, elapsed time, heart rate, or cadence if your particular watch supports it. Set only fields that are useful for the run you intend to do; a metric that is not supported or available for Run will not become selectable just because the screen has room.
  7. Exit the settings and check the screens. Before starting the run, view the activity’s preview screens and confirm that the fields and layout are what you intended. This simple check can help you catch a misplaced field or a page you would otherwise need to scroll to during the activity.

Garmin’s support article for the Forerunner 265 describes enabling a downloaded Connect IQ data field through the watch’s activity data-screen settings. It is a useful example of the general editing pattern, but does not establish the same sequence for every Garmin watch. If a step or label does not match your device, use that model’s instructions rather than trying to force the example into a different menu structure.

Edit fields in Garmin Connect on some older models

For the Forerunner 30 and 35, Garmin documents editing data fields through Garmin Connect. Its instructions say the app can change the field types, the number of fields shown per page, and the number of data pages. This is a distinct route from the watch-based Forerunner 265 example, which is why the model matters when following setup guidance.

  1. Open Garmin Connect.
  2. Go to More > Garmin Devices.
  3. Select your Forerunner 30 or Forerunner 35.
  4. Open Activity Options > Data Fields.
  5. Choose the data-field options you want, including field types, fields per page, and the number of data pages.

This app route is documented for those two models. Do not assume it is the right route for another watch: check that model’s Garmin instructions if the menus differ or the app does not show these options. The difference is not simply a matter of personal preference between phone and watch; it reflects the editing method Garmin documents for these particular models.

When using the app route, consider all three settings together. Changing a field type selects what information a field represents. Changing fields per page affects how many values share a screen. Changing the number of pages affects how many separate screens are available. A larger number of pages can separate information by purpose, while putting many values on one page can reduce the need to move among pages; choose within the options your watch provides.

Choose a layout for the way you run

There is no objectively best screen layout established for every runner. Choose according to what you need to read during the activity and what your watch supports. A sensible way to decide is to start with the run’s purpose, identify the one or two values you most need to consult, and then consider whether the available layout makes those values easy to locate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Prioritize at-a-glance reading. Fewer, larger fields can make the key value easier to pick out while moving; a denser screen can put more metrics together but may be harder to scan. This is a practical trade-off, not a measured claim that one layout is faster or better for every runner.
  • Match fields to the session. Pace and distance may suit a straightforward run. For intervals, elapsed time or another relevant timing field may be useful. Runners following heart-rate guidance may want heart rate visible. These are selection considerations, not a claim that every model provides every metric.
  • Decide whether scrolling is acceptable. Put the most important metric on a screen you can reach easily. If you need several metrics at once, consider whether your watch’s layout keeps them legible. If you are comfortable moving between pages, separate screens can give different purposes their own space.
  • Check that the field works in Run. A metric or downloaded field may not be available for every activity profile or watch. Confirm compatibility before building a layout around a field you may not be able to add.

One way to compare possible setups is by the balance between visibility and information density. A compact screen emphasizes fewer values, while a fuller screen can show a broader mix together. Neither choice is universally right: the useful question is whether the values you need are easy to find in the conditions in which you run.

Training purpose is another comparison. For an easy run, a runner might prefer a small group of familiar values such as pace and distance. For an interval session, timing may be more central; for a run guided by heart rate, heart rate may deserve a prominent place. These examples describe how to choose, not a prescribed set of fields or a guarantee that a particular watch supports them.

Keep the setup practical: begin with the few values you actually consult, then add another screen or field only when it answers a real need. Layout choices are watch-specific, so use the available options on your own device rather than expecting a particular number of fields or pages. A useful final check is to ask whether you can explain why each screen and field is there; if not, simplify the display.

Connect IQ fields and compatibility limits

Downloaded Connect IQ data fields have compatibility constraints. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 guidance says not all Connect IQ data fields are compatible with all activity profiles, and that users can use up to two Connect IQ data fields at a time. Those limits are stated in that model-linked guidance; do not treat them as a universal rule for every watch or every built-in data field.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The activity-profile caveat matters even when a field is available for a watch in general. A field may not be usable in the specific profile where you want it. For a running setup, check both whether the field supports your watch and whether it supports Run. The Forerunner 265 instructions are the source for the up-to-two Connect IQ field limit; apply that limit to the guidance it describes rather than assuming it governs every Garmin model.

If a Connect IQ field does not appear or cannot be selected, check whether it supports your watch and the Run activity profile. Also check whether you have already reached the two-field limit described in Garmin’s Forerunner 265 instructions. The field’s compatibility, rather than the screen layout alone, may be the limiting factor.

It is useful to separate downloaded Connect IQ fields from ordinary built-in data fields when troubleshooting. Garmin’s stated limit concerns Connect IQ fields in its Forerunner 265 guidance; it should not be restated as a maximum of two total fields on a screen. Check the exact wording and compatibility information for the device and field in question before drawing conclusions about a restriction.

Running power requires a model-specific check

Running power is not a single universal setup. Garmin says select watches can provide it natively, while some watches require a compatible accessory and a Connect IQ app. Confirm the requirements for your watch before choosing a power field or accessory; the available method depends on the model.

That distinction affects what to check first. If your watch offers running power natively, the setup path and options may differ from a watch that depends on an accessory and an app. The support information does not establish that every Garmin watch offers native power, or that one accessory works with every watch, so verify the exact combination rather than buying or installing something on assumption.

Garmin’s running-power support information lists Connect IQ choices for current running power, lap average, last-lap average, session average, and a combined display. The Combo Running Power app requires a one-field layout. These are app-specific options, not a catalog guaranteed to be available on every watch. If the combined option will not fit the layout you selected, check its one-field requirement and the app’s compatibility information.

These options also represent different ways to view power: a current value, an average over a lap, the last lap, or the session, alongside the combined display option. Choose only an option that answers a question you have during your run and that is supported by your device and setup. The names describe the options Garmin lists; they do not imply that every option appears on every model.

When a screen or field is missing

  • The menu path does not match: Garmin’s setup instructions vary by model. Use the instructions for the exact watch rather than applying a button sequence from another Forerunner. The 265 watch example and the 30/35 app instructions demonstrate why a single universal path would be misleading.
  • The setting is not on the watch: The Forerunner 30 and 35 use the documented Garmin Connect route at More > Garmin Devices > device > Activity Options > Data Fields.
  • A downloaded field is unavailable in Run: Check Connect IQ compatibility with both your watch and the activity profile. Garmin specifically warns that not all fields work in all profiles.
  • You cannot add another Connect IQ field: Garmin’s Forerunner 265 guidance limits users to two Connect IQ data fields at a time. That documented limit is model-linked.
  • A running-power option is not present: Verify whether your watch supports power natively or whether the option requires a compatible accessory and Connect IQ app. Also check any app-specific layout requirement.
  • The screen does not look as expected: Return to the Run profile’s data-screen settings, review the selected layout and fields, then check the activity preview screens before beginning the run.

If the problem is that you cannot find a particular field, first establish which setup route applies to your model. Next, distinguish a missing menu from an unsupported metric: Garmin’s model-specific instructions may place the controls elsewhere, while Connect IQ compatibility can prevent a field from being selected even when you are in the right place. For running power, check the model, any compatible accessory requirement, the app, and the layout condition together.

When a layout appears wrong, revisit the page itself rather than assuming the activity profile has changed globally. Check which page you edited, which fields occupy its slots, and whether the screen you want is included among the activity’s pages. Then return to the preview to confirm what you will see before starting.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I set up Garmin data screens for running?

Select the Run activity profile, open its settings, find Data Screens or the model’s equivalent, choose a screen and layout, then edit its fields. The exact steps vary by watch, so use the instructions for your model.

Can I change Garmin running data screens in Garmin Connect?

Garmin documents an app-based route for the Forerunner 30 and 35: Garmin Connect > More > Garmin Devices > select the watch > Activity Options > Data Fields. That route should not be assumed to apply to other models.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why can’t I add a Connect IQ data field to my Run screen?

Check that the field is compatible with both your watch and the Run activity profile. Garmin’s Forerunner 265 guidance says not all Connect IQ fields work with all activity profiles and allows up to two Connect IQ data fields at a time; that limit is model-linked.

Can every Garmin watch show running power?

No universal setup applies. Garmin says select watches provide running power natively, while some require a compatible accessory and Connect IQ app. Confirm the requirements for your exact watch and chosen option.

What running data should I put on my Garmin screen?

Choose fields to suit the session and the layout you can read. Pace and distance may be useful for a straightforward run; timing can matter for intervals, and heart rate may matter when following heart-rate guidance. Availability varies by watch, and these are examples rather than a prescribed setup.

Why is the Garmin menu path different from the instructions I found?

Garmin’s steps vary by model. For example, its current Forerunner 265 guidance uses the activity’s data-screen settings, while its Forerunner 30/35 guidance documents editing through Garmin Connect. Check instructions for the exact device.

The Bottom Line

Set up screens within the Run activity profile, choose a layout that makes your key values easy to find, and confirm the result before you start. Garmin’s menu paths and supported fields vary by model; Connect IQ fields and running power may add further compatibility or accessory requirements.
