The Garmin Approach S72 can show emails, texts, and other phone alerts when paired with an iPhone or Android phone. It also tracks sleep and health metrics, and its manual documents power-saving options for activities. Some notification and general battery-setting paths are not confirmed in the available S72 documentation, so this guide separates verified S72 controls from settings to check in the current manual rather than guessing at menus.

Set up phone notifications on the S72

Garmin lists smart notifications—including emails, texts, and alerts—as an Approach S72 feature when the watch is paired with an iPhone or Android smartphone. Garmin’s regional product page confirms the capability, but the available S72 manual excerpts do not establish the exact pairing or notification-selection steps. See Garmin’s Approach S72 product page.

To get alerts, pair the watch with your phone and make sure the phone itself allows notifications for the apps you want. The phone’s operating-system permissions and Garmin Connect settings can affect what reaches the watch; changing a watch setting alone may not be enough. Because the exact S72 menus and the iPhone-versus-Android differences are not confirmed here, consult the current Approach S72 Owner’s Manual and Garmin Connect instructions for your phone before following tap-by-tap directions.

Quiet notifications during sleep

The S72 sleep documentation says Do Not Disturb can silence notifications and alerts, with alarms excepted. This is useful if you want fewer interruptions overnight. Confirm the current manual’s menu path before changing the setting; the available documentation does not establish the exact route.

Configure health tracking

Find the health controls

From the watch face, the S72 manual places these controls under Settings > Health & Wellness:

  • Wrist Heart Rate: controls wrist-based heart-rate tracking.
  • Pulse Oximeter: provides the watch’s Pulse Ox mode controls. Pulse Ox can use additional battery, so decide whether its readings are worth the added sensor use for your needs.
  • Move IQ: detects familiar movement patterns and can show an activity’s type and duration in the timeline. Move IQ events are not saved as recorded activities.

If you want the fuller detail associated with a workout, start and save a timed activity rather than relying on a Move IQ timeline event. Garmin documents the S72 health controls in its Approach S72 Health & Wellness manual section.

Set sleep hours and review sleep data

Set your usual sleep schedule in Garmin Connect or in the watch settings. The S72 automatically detects sleep during those configured normal sleep hours and records duration, stages, movement, and a sleep score. Garmin Connect provides the detailed statistics. These are automatic sleep estimates; they are different from manually recording a timed activity. Wearing the watch while sleeping helps it collect the data used for sleep and related metrics. See the S72 sleep tracking manual section.

Understand Body Battery

Body Battery is an estimate of reserve energy, not a direct measurement of energy. Garmin says it combines heart-rate variability (HRV), stress, sleep quality, and activity data. Its S72 scale runs from 5 to 100:

Rank #3
Garmin Approach® S50, Golf GPS Smartwatch, 43mm, Black
  • Stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
  • Be comfortable on and off the course with the lightweight ComfortFit nylon strap
  • Battery life: up to 10 days in smartwatch mode and up to 15 hours in GPS mode
  • Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
  • Playslike Distance feature tells you how far each shot truly is, with adjusted yardage for elevation changes
Score Garmin’s description
5–25 Very low reserve
26–50 Low reserve
51–75 Medium reserve
76–100 High reserve

Good sleep can raise the estimate, while strenuous activity and high stress can lower it. Sync with Garmin Connect to see current levels, longer trends, and additional details. For more accurate results, wear the watch while sleeping. The figures and explanation are from Garmin’s S72 Body Battery manual section.

Use the S72’s documented activity power settings

The S72 manual documents activity-specific Power Mode and Power Save Timeout settings. These apply in an activity context; do not treat them as a universal battery-saver setup for everyday watch use.

Rank #4
Garmin Approach® S44, Golf GPS Smartwatch, 43mm, Black
  • Slim design with a stunning 1.2” color AMOLED display that brings 43,000+ preloaded courses to life on your wrist
  • Get distance to the front, middle and back of the green and navigate bunkers, water hazards and layups with hazard view
  • Pair with optional Approach CT1 or CT10 club trackers (sold separately) for shot-tracking capabilities, so you have a clearer picture of which parts of your game to focus on
  • Easily keep score as you play, and upload to the Garmin Golf smartphone app for advanced stat tracking and handicap calculation
  • Leave your phone in the cart and get smart notifications sent to your wrist — including emails, texts and alerts when paired with your iPhone or Android smartphone

Choose a power-save timeout

Setting What the S72 manual says Trade-off
Normal Switches to low-power watch mode after 5 minutes of inactivity. Returns to low-power mode sooner.
Extended Waits 25 minutes of inactivity before switching to low-power watch mode. Can reduce battery life between charges.

Choose based on whether you value a longer active period during an activity or conserving charge. The manual’s S72 activity settings section documents the timeout. Check the current manual for the exact on-watch route.

Record expedition track points less often

For expedition activity use, the manual says that recording track points less often maximizes battery life. The trade-off is a less detailed track. This is a specialized activity setting, not a recommendation to reduce recording detail for every round or workout; consult the S72 activity settings section for the available options and path.

Find other likely battery drains without guessing at S72 menus

Garmin’s broader battery guidance identifies bright displays, vibration, Bluetooth connections, GPS, music, and All-Day or sleep Pulse Ox as factors that can increase battery use across its watches. The cited support article is associated with the Approach S62/general watch guidance, not confirmation of S72 menu names or available options. Treat it as a checklist of things to verify—not as S72-specific directions. Garmin advises checking the device manual for compatibility and setting locations. See Garmin’s battery-drain guidance.

  • If the S72 offers a brightness control, a lower display setting may conserve power at the cost of visibility.
  • If it offers vibration controls, reducing vibration may save power but make alerts easier to miss.
  • Review whether you need frequent wireless connections, GPS, or music during a given activity; availability and controls vary by device and use.
  • Use Pulse Ox only to the extent you need its data, since sensor use can add to battery consumption.
  • Balance notification coverage against interruptions and connected-feature use; alerts and wireless connections can contribute to battery drain.

Do not assume another Approach model’s Always On display behavior or default applies to the S72. Garmin’s separate Always On support page concerns the S70 series, so it does not establish S72 behavior: Garmin’s S70 Always On display article.
