In Cyberpunk 2077, the documented setup is inside the game: open Settings → Graphics, select AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3 for resolution scaling, then enable the separate FSR Frame Generation option. Frame Generation remains unavailable unless FSR 3 upscaling is active.
Your handheld’s GPU and operating system determine whether you should use this built-in route or a separate driver feature such as AMD Fluid Motion Frames. Windows and SteamOS should not be treated as interchangeable, and no frame-generation mode makes a low, unstable starting frame rate feel like a high-performance system.
Which frame-generation method applies to your handheld?
Cyberpunk 2077 has more than one frame-generation path on PC, but they are not the same feature. Start by identifying the handheld’s graphics hardware and operating system.

The in-game FSR 3 switch is the primary procedure for this guide. AFMF is a driver-level technology, not an alternate name for the game’s FSR control. DLSS Frame Generation is also a separate hardware-specific route.

What you need before enabling Frame Generation
Use the PC edition and a current installation
FSR 3 with Frame Generation was added to the PC version in Patch 2.13, released on September 12, 2024. If the option is missing, update the game through your launcher before changing graphics settings. Console versions do not use this PC menu.
Patch availability is checked by the game version installed on the handheld, not by the age of the device. A newly purchased handheld can still have an unpatched game, while an older Windows model can show the controls after updating. Let Steam, GOG or your other PC launcher finish its update, then restart the game so the graphics menu reloads.
Find your baseline frame rate first
CD PROJEKT RED recommends running the game at a stable baseline of at least 60 FPS before enabling Frame Generation. This is a developer recommendation, not a guarantee that every handheld can reach it. Frame generation creates additional displayed frames from the game’s rendered frames; it does not remove the workload that produces the original frames.

A repeatable location with crowds, traffic, combat or heavy lighting gives you a more useful baseline than standing in a quiet room. If frame rate swings widely, lower the game’s resolution or graphics quality until the starting result is reasonably stable. Do not judge the feature from a single peak reading.
Record both the average reading and the behavior you feel while moving the camera. A short burst at 60 FPS followed by drops into the 30s is not the same starting point as a sustained 60 FPS. Frame Generation can make a counter look higher while the original frames still arrive late. That is why stability and frame pacing matter more than the largest number shown by an overlay.
Check the display’s refresh rate
The developer advises using a display with a refresh rate of 120 Hz or higher. That advice describes the display target for the feature; it is not a promise that a particular handheld will produce smooth output at that rate. A panel with a lower refresh limit can still run the game, but it provides less room for presenting generated frames.
Check the handheld’s active refresh setting in Windows or the device’s control center, not just the panel specification. If you switch between 60 Hz and 120 Hz profiles, test the game again after the change. Keep the same refresh rate, frame limiter and power profile when comparing Frame Generation on and off.

CD PROJEKT RED’s technical-support material discusses Hardware-Accelerated GPU Scheduling (HAGS) and driver versions for AMD, NVIDIA and Intel hardware. Those version references belong to that support article and should not be treated as a statement of the latest drivers. Install the current graphics driver offered by your handheld manufacturer or GPU vendor, then restart Windows if the installer requests it.
HAGS is a Windows setting, separate from the game’s FSR toggle. If a support instruction for your hardware calls for it, check Settings → System → Display → Graphics → Default graphics settings in Windows and restart after changing it. Do not assume that enabling HAGS, updating a driver or installing a utility automatically enables Frame Generation; each route still has its own game, hardware and operating-system requirements.

Step-by-step: enable the built-in FSR 3 Frame Generation option
- Launch the updated PC version of Cyberpunk 2077. On a handheld, connect power if possible and close overlays or background applications that are consuming significant CPU or GPU time.
- Open the graphics menu. From the main menu, choose Settings, then Graphics. The labels can vary slightly by language, but the relevant controls are in the graphics and resolution-scaling sections.
- Choose AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3. In the resolution-scaling control, select AMD FidelityFX Super Resolution 3. This is the upscaling method that unlocks the game’s FSR Frame Generation control.
- Enable the separate Frame Generation setting. Keep FSR 3 upscaling enabled and switch on FSR Frame Generation. If the control is unavailable, return to the resolution-scaling setting and verify that FSR 3—not another upscaler—is selected.
- Apply the settings and return to the same test scene. Watch frame pacing and image stability while moving the camera, driving and entering combat. A higher displayed frame count is not useful if motion becomes uneven or distracting.
- Keep a practical handheld power profile. If the device changes its power limit or thermal behavior while you play, retest after the change. The game’s starting frame rate must remain stable; otherwise the generated output can inherit the instability.
FSR 3 has two separate jobs in this menu. The upscaler renders internally at a lower workload and reconstructs the image for the selected output, while Frame Generation creates additional displayed frames. The second control is dependent on the first, so selecting another upscaler and then looking for the Frame Generation switch will produce a misleading “missing option” problem.

How to tune a handheld before turning Frame Generation on
There is no universal handheld preset in the official guidance because devices differ in screen resolution, cooling, memory bandwidth and power limits. Use this order of operations instead.
1. Stabilize the game at the handheld’s native target
Decide whether you are targeting the panel’s native resolution or a lower internal resolution. Lowering the rendering workload can create the stable starting point the developer expects, while FSR 3 reconstructs the image for display. Keep the output resolution and aspect ratio consistent during testing so that comparisons are meaningful.
2. Reduce expensive graphics settings selectively
If the baseline remains unstable, reduce the settings that place the greatest load on your GPU or CPU, then retest the same scene. Change one group of settings at a time so you know which adjustment helped. Avoid claiming success from a menu benchmark alone; real play includes streaming, crowds and camera movement that can expose pacing problems.
Make a written note of each test: resolution, major quality preset, refresh rate, power mode and whether FSR Frame Generation was enabled. This prevents a power-profile change or an unnoticed resolution switch from being mistaken for a frame-generation improvement.
3. Check frame pacing rather than only the headline FPS number
Frame-time consistency matters because Frame Generation relies on a sequence of rendered frames. A counter can show a high displayed rate while motion still feels uneven if the underlying frames arrive irregularly. The developer specifically warns that artifacts may be more prominent and frame pacing may suffer when the baseline frame rate is low.
Look for uneven camera pans, delayed-feeling controls, repeated images during fast turns and breakup around thin geometry. Compare the same route with the feature disabled, then enabled, rather than switching settings in different parts of Night City.
4. Test with the display refresh setting you will actually use
Do not test at one refresh rate and play at another. The 120 Hz-or-higher recommendation concerns the panel’s refresh capability, while the game’s output, frame limiter and handheld power profile determine what you actually see.

5. Recheck after thermal or power changes
Handhelds often change clocks and power limits between battery, balanced and plugged-in modes. The official guidance does not establish a universal wattage or preset, so retest whenever you change those controls. A result that is smooth for the first few minutes can deteriorate if sustained heat lowers the underlying frame rate.
Using AMD Fluid Motion Frames on Windows
AMD Fluid Motion Frames, commonly abbreviated AFMF, is a driver-level feature managed through AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition. It is distinct from Cyberpunk 2077’s in-game FSR 3 Frame Generation. Use it only when your handheld meets AMD’s stated hardware and software requirements.
Requirements AMD specifies
- A supported Radeon or Ryzen graphics configuration.
- Windows 10 or Windows 11.
- AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition 25.3.1 or later, according to AMD’s documented requirements.
- VSync disabled both in the AMD driver and in the game.
AMD’s requirements are eligibility checks, not a performance promise. A supported device can still fall below the 60 FPS baseline recommended for the game’s own FSR Frame Generation, and the result can vary with its power and cooling limits.
These requirements are why you should not copy the AFMF procedure to SteamOS. The cited AMD requirements are for Windows 10 and 11; they do not establish a universal SteamOS method.
Configure AFMF globally
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition.
- Go to Gaming → Graphics.
- Find the Fluid Motion Frames control and enable it according to the current driver interface.
- Confirm that VSync is disabled in the driver.
- Open Cyberpunk 2077’s graphics settings and disable in-game VSync as well.
- Launch the game and test motion in a repeatable demanding scene.
Configure AFMF for Cyberpunk 2077 only
- Open AMD Software: Adrenalin Edition and choose Gaming → Games.
- Select the Cyberpunk 2077 profile, or add the game executable if it is not listed.
- Enable the AFMF control for that profile.
- Verify VSync is disabled in both places before launching the game.
- Retest after every driver update because control names and compatibility behavior can change.
AFMF should not be described as a replacement for FSR 3 upscaling. The game’s FSR switch changes how Cyberpunk renders and reconstructs its image; AFMF operates at the driver level. Depending on hardware and software, using both may not produce the same result as using the game’s documented FSR path, so treat them as separate configurations and compare them in the same scene. If you are troubleshooting, begin with one method at a time instead of stacking switches and trying to identify which one caused an artifact.
NVIDIA DLSS Frame Generation on a compatible handheld
DLSS Frame Generation applies only to a handheld with supported GeForce RTX graphics. Cyberpunk 2077’s Patch 2.21 notes identify single Frame Generation support for RTX 40 and RTX 50 GPUs, and Multi Frame Generation support for RTX 50 Series hardware.
If your device has one of those GPUs, use the NVIDIA/DLSS controls exposed by the game and follow the game’s dependency prompts. If it does not have supported RTX hardware, the DLSS option does not become available through a software switch. In that case, use FSR 3 or an applicable AMD driver feature instead.
Do not infer RTX support from the presence of a generic “frame generation” label in a handheld utility. The GPU generation named in the game’s patch notes is the relevant limitation. A device with integrated Radeon or Ryzen graphics cannot gain DLSS Frame Generation by installing an NVIDIA driver.
SteamOS and Steam Deck: what is and is not established
The official materials covered here do not provide a universal SteamOS procedure for Frame Generation. Cyberpunk 2077’s in-game FSR 3 control is the documented feature, but AMD’s AFMF requirements explicitly name Windows 10 and Windows 11. Therefore, do not assume that the Windows Adrenalin steps work on SteamOS, and do not present AFMF as a guaranteed Steam Deck configuration.

On a SteamOS handheld, first check whether the FSR 3 controls appear in the installed PC game and test that in-game route. If the controls are absent or behave unexpectedly, the available evidence does not support promising a driver-level workaround without device-specific compatibility information. Keep the operating system, game build and graphics options noted when asking for help; a Windows procedure cannot be assumed to describe the SteamOS interface.

How to decide whether to keep Frame Generation enabled
Leave FSR Frame Generation enabled when the game’s controls are available, the underlying frame rate is stable, and motion looks better on your display. Disable it when artifacts or uneven pacing are more distracting than the extra displayed frames. Make the comparison in the same location, with the same resolution, graphics settings, refresh rate and power profile.
Remember that Frame Generation changes displayed output rather than replacing the game’s rendering workload. It cannot compensate for severe CPU limits, thermal throttling, shader stutter or an unstable power mode. Those problems must be addressed at the device, driver or game-settings level first.
The 60 FPS recommendation is a useful decision rule, not a pass-or-fail certification. If your handheld cannot maintain a reasonably stable baseline near that level, try lowering the workload or leave Frame Generation off. If it can, judge the result by latency, artifacts and pacing in the scenes you actually play instead of by a displayed-FPS number alone.

Which NVIDIA handhelds support DLSS Frame Generation?
Patch 2.21 identifies RTX 40 and RTX 50 support for single Frame Generation, with Multi Frame Generation on RTX 50 Series hardware. A handheld without a supported GeForce RTX GPU cannot unlock DLSS Frame Generation through a software setting.
Will Frame Generation increase battery life?
There is no universal battery result established for handhelds. Frame Generation does not remove the workload needed to render the original frames, and power, clocks and thermals vary by device. Measure battery behavior on your own handheld rather than assuming a benefit.
