To play four-player split-screen in the current Star Fox release for Nintendo Switch 2, open Battle Mode, choose Local Battle, set the console to four players, pair one compatible controller for each player, choose pilots, and select a mission. If Local Battle is missing, install the free update first; Nintendo says an internet connection and software update are required to download the mode.

Confirm you have the right Star Fox game

These instructions apply to the current Star Fox release that Nintendo identifies as exclusive to Nintendo Switch 2. Its local multiplayer feature is a split-screen Battle Mode for up to four people on one console. A similarly named older game can have different menus and multiplayer requirements.

  • Nintendo Switch 2 release: Use the Battle Mode and Local Battle path in this guide. Nintendo describes local split-screen battles with up to three friends.
  • Star Fox 64 on Nintendo 64: Do not assume its multiplayer setup matches the Switch 2 release.
  • Star Fox 64 3D on Nintendo 3DS: Its manual describes multiplayer through wireless communication, which is a different hardware and connection context.

Check the game title and the console shown on your HOME Menu before troubleshooting. If you are using an older version, the menu names and player limits in this article may not apply.

What four-player split-screen actually is

Four-player play is a Battle Mode feature. In this mode, players take part in aerial combat with and against other players and CPU-controlled opponents. Everyone plays from the same Nintendo Switch 2, with each local participant using a paired controller.

It is not four-player campaign co-op. Nintendo’s campaign co-op instructions describe two players sharing the aircraft’s pilot and gunner roles. That arrangement is separate from the four-player Local Battle option. If your goal is to progress through the story together, Local Battle is not the documented route; if your goal is a four-person match, Battle Mode is the correct route.

Local split screen is also different from online four-on-four team battles and from local GameShare. Those options involve separate arrangements and may have their own Nintendo Switch Online, account, internet, or console requirements. The steps below are specifically for four people playing on one console.

Requirements before you start

  • The current Nintendo Switch 2 release of Star Fox. Older Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 3DS titles are not interchangeable with these instructions.
  • The free software update that adds Local Split-Screen Battle Mode. Nintendo states that an internet connection and a software update are required to download it.
  • One compatible controller per local player. The setup flow pairs a controller for each participant. Nintendo’s cited setup instructions do not name particular controller models, so verify that any controller you intend to use is compatible with your console and region before buying or borrowing it.
  • A display and enough room for four players. Nintendo’s instructions do not specify a particular TV arrangement or the exact visual division of the screen. Use the display configuration supported by your console, but do not expect a documented layout beyond the game’s split-screen mode.

You do not need to create an online match to use Local Battle. The defining requirement is that all four players connect controllers to the same Nintendo Switch 2.

Install the update that unlocks Local Split-Screen Battle

Nintendo identifies Local Split-Screen Battle Mode as a free update for the current Star Fox product. The download requires internet access and a software update. Without that update, the Local Battle entry may be absent or the split-screen option may not be available.

  1. Connect the Nintendo Switch 2 to the internet.
  2. Start Star Fox from the HOME Menu and allow any software-update prompt to complete. If the console offers an update before launch, accept it and wait until the installation finishes.
  3. Relaunch the game after the update. Return to the title screen and check the Battle Mode menu for Local Battle.

The update is a prerequisite, not an optional enhancement, when Local Battle is unavailable. If the game still does not show the mode after updating, use the troubleshooting section below to verify that you are running the Switch 2 release and that the update completed successfully.

Step-by-step: start a four-player local match

1. Launch the game

From the Nintendo Switch 2 HOME Menu, start the current Star Fox software. Wait for the title screen rather than entering a mode through a suspended session, so the player-count setup begins from the documented menu path.

2. Press A at the title screen

When the title screen appears, press A. This advances to the main menu where the multiplayer options are listed.

3. Open Battle Mode

Select Battle Mode. On a first visit, the game may show an overview. Review it and continue when prompted. Battle Mode is the section that contains both local multiplayer combat and the other battle arrangements; campaign co-op is not the four-player split-screen option.

4. Choose Local Battle

Inside Battle Mode, select Local Battle. This tells the game that all participants will play from the same Nintendo Switch 2 rather than joining an online or multi-console arrangement.

5. Set the console to four players

Change the number of players using this console to four, then press A. Set the count before pairing controllers. The four-player setting reserves all four local positions for the match; selecting a lower count will not create a four-person split-screen session later in the flow.

6. Pair each controller

When prompted, pair the additional controllers. Each player must pair one compatible controller. Have the four participants complete the pairing screen before continuing. If one player is missing, stop and resolve that controller connection rather than proceeding with an incomplete roster.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Continue to pilot selection

After controller pairing is complete, continue to the next screen and choose pilots. Each player selects a pilot using the controller assigned during the pairing step. The available pilot choices and their handling are part of the game’s normal Battle Mode selection; the setup instructions do not require a separate online account.

8. Select a mission and start

Choose a mission, confirm the selection, and start the match. At this point, the game launches the four-player local battle on the single console.

Main menu Battle Mode Enter aerial combat modes.

How the local options differ

Arrangement Where it appears What it supports What you need to know
Local split-screen battle Battle Mode > Local Battle Up to four players on one Nintendo Switch 2 Set four players, pair four controllers, choose pilots and a mission.
Campaign co-op Campaign co-op instructions Two players sharing pilot and gunner roles It is not a four-player split-screen campaign.
Online four-on-four team battle Online battle arrangement Team play across network connections Separate Nintendo Switch Online, account and internet requirements apply as listed by Nintendo.
Local GameShare GameShare feature A separate local sharing arrangement Do not select it when your goal is four players on one console in split screen.

The table separates features that can sound similar. For four people gathered around one console, the decisive choice is Battle Mode > Local Battle.

Controller planning for four players

The setup flow asks each local player to pair a controller, so plan for four compatible controllers before opening Local Battle. The official setup information does not identify a preferred controller model or state that every controller type works. Compatibility can vary by console, software version and region.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Count the controllers that will be used before launching the game.
  • Confirm that each one is recognized by the Nintendo Switch 2 and has enough battery or a wired connection for the session.
  • Pair controllers in the game’s prompt when requested, so the player assignments match the people holding them.
  • If a controller is assigned to the wrong person, stop at the pairing screen and correct the assignment before choosing pilots.

Do not buy a particular controller solely because a listing uses the words “Star Fox.” The cited Nintendo instructions establish the one-controller-per-player requirement but do not establish a specific model recommendation.

Troubleshooting when Local Battle is missing

The Local Battle option does not appear

  • Verify that the software is the current Nintendo Switch 2 release, not Star Fox 64 or Star Fox 64 3D.
  • Connect the console to the internet and install the free update. Nintendo says the update is required to download Local Split-Screen Battle Mode.
  • Close and relaunch the game after the update completes, then open Battle Mode again.

The game asks for an update but cannot download it

Check the console’s internet connection and retry the software update. The mode cannot be downloaded without internet access. If the console reports that the update finished, restart the game so it reloads the updated menu rather than relying on a previously suspended session.

A fourth controller will not pair

Confirm that the player count is set to four before pairing. Then check that the controller is compatible with the Nintendo Switch 2, powered on and not already assigned elsewhere. Pair each controller when the game prompts you; continuing before all four are recognized can leave the match configured for fewer participants.

The game starts with fewer than four players

Return to Local Battle and inspect the “number of players using this console” setting. It must be four. A controller being present does not automatically change the selected player count, so correct the count and repeat pairing if necessary.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You expected a four-player story campaign

That expectation conflicts with the documented modes. The four-player local feature is Battle Mode. Campaign co-op is documented as a two-player pilot-and-gunner arrangement, not a four-player split-screen campaign. Choose the mode that matches the type of play you want before inviting everyone to join.

Common setup mistakes to avoid

  • Choosing the wrong game: Similar titles on Nintendo 64 and Nintendo 3DS use different multiplayer contexts.
  • Looking in Campaign instead of Battle Mode: Four-player split screen is under Local Battle.
  • Skipping the update: The local split-screen feature arrives through a free update that requires internet access.
  • Pairing before setting four players: Set the console’s player count to four first, then pair controllers.
  • Confusing local and online play: Online four-on-four and local GameShare are separate arrangements from one-console split screen.
  • Assuming a controller model is officially endorsed: Nintendo’s setup information requires compatible controllers but does not name specific models.
  • Assuming a fixed screen layout: Nintendo’s instructions do not specify the exact visual division or TV configuration, so avoid promising a particular arrangement.

Pre-match checklist

  • Current Star Fox release for Nintendo Switch 2 is installed.
  • Internet connection was available when the free Local Split-Screen Battle update was downloaded.
  • Battle Mode opens and shows Local Battle.
  • Four compatible controllers are available and powered.
  • Local Battle is set to four players using this console.
  • All four controllers are paired at the prompt.
  • Each participant has chosen a pilot.
  • A mission has been selected.

What Nintendo’s documentation does—and does not—establish

Nintendo’s product information establishes that the current Switch 2 release supports local split-screen Battle Mode for up to four people and that the feature is delivered in a free update requiring internet access and a software update download. Nintendo’s setup path identifies the player-count selection, controller pairing, pilot selection and mission selection described above.

The documentation does not identify exact controller models, promise a particular television or screen-split layout, or turn the four-player feature into campaign co-op. Those details should not be inferred from the existence of Local Battle. Treat the documented menu path and requirements as the reliable boundary of the feature.

Quick answer

On Nintendo Switch 2, launch Star Fox, press A at the title screen, open Battle Mode, choose Local Battle, set the console to four players, pair one compatible controller for each player, choose pilots and select a mission. Install Nintendo’s free update first if Local Battle is unavailable. This is four-player Battle Mode on one console, not four-player campaign co-op.
