Set up either tracker in the Google Health app after charging it, then pair it with a Google account and confirm automatic syncing. Fitbit Air is a lightweight, screenless tracker controlled from your phone; Fitbit Edge adds an on-wrist display, watch faces, tiles, apps, GPS controls and notifications. A snug fit with continuous sensor contact is essential for reliable readings.
The practical difference is where you interact with your data. Air is designed for passive tracking: wear it and review the results in Google Health. Edge puts many of those results, workout controls and alerts on your wrist. The setup account and app connection are still central to both devices.
What you need before setup
Both trackers are configured through Google Health rather than directly from the tracker alone. Prepare the following:
Recommended Free Tools
- The Fitbit Air or Fitbit Edge tracker and its charging cable.
- A compatible Android phone or iPhone/iPad with Google Health installed.
- A Google account. Google requires one for pairing.
- A wearable position on the top of your wrist where the sensor can remain against your skin.
Google lists Android 11.0 or newer and iOS 16.4 or newer for Google Health with Air. Edge pairing also uses Google Health on Android or iPhone/iPad. Keep the tracker charged during first setup; Edge can be powered on while connected to its cable.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Fitbit Air is the unbelievably comfortable, exceptionally smart way to transform your health[1]; and Google Health brings together effortless tracking and adaptive coaching to help make the most of your everyday[2]
- Unlock more with Google Health Premium: With a premium membership, get personalized coaching that’s built with Gemini and adapts to your life[2]; get a 3-month trial at no cost to you[5] (Google Health Premium subscription sold separately)
- Comfortable fit - One Size Tracker (130-210 mm): The lightweight, micro-adjustable fit sits comfortably and quietly, so you can wear Google Fitbit Air through work, play, and sleep; advanced sensors and new algorithms power more accurate, precise health tracking, 24/7[1]
- Designed for every occasion: With no screen to distract you or disrupt your style, your tracker moves seamlessly from bracelet to workout band to sleep band, and you can change looks in seconds – just press the pebble in, click, and go
- Long battery life: Google Fitbit Air’s battery lasts up to a week, and fast charging gets you one day of battery life in just five minutes[6,7]
Have the phone and tracker close together during pairing. Use the Google account you intend to keep associated with the device, because that account is used to manage the tracker and its health data later. If you have more than one account, choosing the wrong one at setup can make a later reconnection confusing.
Decide where you will wear the tracker before starting. Both models depend on a stable fit, and the correct placement matters more than simply tightening the band. The sensor should remain against skin while you move, sleep and exercise.
Set up Google Fitbit Air
1. Connect Air to power
Attach Air to its charging cable before beginning. Starting with the tracker connected makes it easier to tell that it is active and avoids interrupting the initial connection because of a low battery.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
2. Install Google Health and sign in
- Install and open the Google Health app on your phone.
- Sign in with your Google account.
- Use the app’s device-connection flow to select Fitbit Air and follow the pairing prompts.
Keep the phone and tracker close together while the app completes pairing. Air has no screen for displaying a setup wizard, so the phone app is where you see the instructions, connection status and account choice.
3. Confirm automatic synchronization
Check the Google Health dashboard for current activity or heart-rate information. A successful connection means the app can receive Air’s measurements without you entering them manually. If the dashboard remains empty, return to the device connection screen and repeat the pairing prompts before changing any health settings.
Allow the initial sync to finish before judging whether a metric is missing. Once the connection is established, use the dashboard as the main place to review activity, sleep and trends. Air’s status light is not a substitute for the full history shown in the app.
4. Decide whether to enable Google Health Premium
Air works as a tracker without the optional subscription, while advanced tracking and coaching can require Google Health Premium. Availability depends on the feature and your region. Review the feature description shown in Google Health before activating Premium so you know which tools it adds to your account.

Wear Air correctly
Place Air on top of your wrist with the optical sensor continuously touching your skin. The band should be snug enough that the tracker does not slide or rotate during movement, but it should leave room for one pinky finger between the band and your wrist. A loose or shifting tracker can reduce the quality of heart-rate, sleep and activity measurements.
Check the fit again after putting on a jacket, going to sleep or beginning exercise. The goal is steady contact, not maximum pressure. If the tracker rotates, readings may become less consistent even when the app and account connection are working normally.
Change an Air accessory band
- Pop the tracker out of the current band.
- Align the markings on the tracker with the replacement band.
- Press the tracker into the new band until it is seated.
- Double-tap to confirm the LED flash.
Accessory bands are sold separately. After changing bands, check that the sensor still sits flat against the top of your wrist and that the replacement band has not introduced extra movement. A new band changes the fit, but it does not add a display or on-device controls to Air.
Set up Google Fitbit Edge
1. Power Edge
Turn on Edge, preferably while it is connected to its charging cable. The cable provides a stable starting point while the tracker receives its first configuration.
2. Install Google Health
Install Google Health on an Android phone or an iPhone/iPad, then open the app.
3. Start pairing from Connections
- Tap Sign in with Google and choose the account you want to use.
- Open Connections.
- Tap Add a device (shown as Add more devices in some app versions).
- Select Fitbit Edge and follow the on-screen pairing prompts.
- Confirm that automatic syncing is enabled when the app offers that choice.
The Google account selected here becomes the account associated with Edge’s health data, so use the same account whenever you later manage the tracker. Keep Edge close to the phone until the prompts finish, even if the tracker has already powered on.
4. Secure the tracker in its band
Press the Edge tracker into the band until it clicks. Google warns that an unsecured band can allow the tracker to fall out. Wear Edge on top of your wrist, with the sensor in stable skin contact, before starting a workout or checking measurements.

After securing it, move your wrist normally and check that the tracker does not rock inside the band. Use the same snug-but-not-tight standard as Air, leaving room for one pinky finger. Correctly seating the pebble protects the device from falling and supports consistent sensor contact.
How Edge’s display and controls work
Edge is the better fit when you want information and controls without reaching for your phone. Its bright display, button and swipe navigation provide access to watch faces, tiles, apps, workout controls and notifications.
Configure Edge in Google Health
Open Google Health > Fitbit Edge device settings. The available controls include:

- Tracker orientation: configure the pebble or tracker orientation to match how you wear it.
- Vibration: adjust vibration behavior for alerts and interactions.
- Display: manage Always-On Display, screen wake behavior and screen timeout.
- GPS: configure GPS controls for activities that use location tracking.
- Magnification: change the on-device magnification setting.
- Watch faces: choose the face shown when you look at the tracker.
- Tiles: arrange the metric and shortcut tiles available from the display.
- Apps: manage apps installed on Edge.
- Phone notifications: choose which phone notifications can appear on the tracker.
These settings separate the tracker’s physical orientation from the information you see. Set orientation first, then arrange the face and tiles around the way you actually check data. Remove or de-emphasize items you rarely use so workout and health views are easier to reach.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesOn Edge itself, swipe down to open Quick Settings. The panel includes brightness, Bedtime Mode, Do Not Disturb, Water Lock and Broadcast HR. Use these shortcuts when you need a temporary change without opening the phone app.
- Brightness changes how easily you can read the display.
- Bedtime Mode is useful when you want fewer nighttime interactions.
- Do Not Disturb suppresses unwanted interruptions.
- Water Lock helps prevent accidental touches around water.
- Broadcast HR provides the heart-rate broadcasting control available from the tracker.
Manage Edge battery trade-offs
Google states that Edge provides up to seven days of battery life. Enabling Always-On Display reduces the stated maximum to up to two days. These are Google’s published maximums; actual runtime changes with display behavior, GPS use, notifications and other settings.
If multi-day battery life is more important than seeing the time constantly, leave Always-On Display off and use screen wake or the button when needed. Review screen timeout as well: a shorter timeout can reduce unnecessary display time, while a longer timeout may be more convenient during a workout. GPS use, frequent screen wakes and repeated notifications can also make the interval between charges shorter than the headline maximum.
Customize the health experience on Edge
Review the health views you need
Edge can show on-wrist heart rate, sleep and recovery views, nightly blood-oxygen (SpO2) estimates, skin-temperature variation, ECG, cardio load, workout guidance and heart-rate broadcasting. The exact set available to you can depend on eligibility, a Google Health Premium subscription or regional availability.
Do not assume that every listed view will appear immediately after pairing. Check the device settings and the health sections in Google Health, then review any eligibility or subscription notice attached to a feature. A regional limitation can prevent a control from appearing even when your Edge hardware is otherwise set up correctly.
Build a workout-focused layout
Use the device settings to place frequently used workout tiles where they are easy to reach, select a watch face that exposes the metrics you check most often and keep only necessary apps on the tracker. Edge supports more than 50 workout modes, including strength training and high-intensity interval training, according to Google’s product information.
For a workout routine, put the activity tile near the beginning of the tile sequence, choose a face that shows the metric you monitor most and keep notifications limited to what you need. This is a convenience customization rather than a change to the underlying sensor measurements.
Control interruptions during exercise and sleep
Use vibration settings for tactile alerts, Do Not Disturb to suppress unwanted notifications and Bedtime Mode when you want a quieter display and interaction pattern. Water Lock is available from Quick Settings when you need to prevent accidental touches around water.
These modes can be changed temporarily from the wrist, while longer-term notification and vibration choices remain in Google Health. Check them before a sleep period or workout so an alert policy does not interfere with the activity you intend to record.
Customize Air from Google Health
Air has no screen, button or on-device menu. Google Health is therefore the control center for its metrics, exercise review, alarms, activity-detection settings and advanced insights. Any customization that would normally happen on a watch face or tile happens in the phone app instead.
Metrics Air records automatically
Google says Air automatically tracks activity, sleep, heart rate, steps, distance, cardio load, calories and sleep stages. It can also provide irregular-rhythm notifications and sleep SpO2 estimates. Some of these functions are limited by region or require Google Health Premium.
Use the dashboard to distinguish a missing reading from a feature that is not available for your account. The metric list is broad, but the device remains screenless: Air records and sends the information, while Google Health supplies the history, charts and review controls.

- Open Google Health.
- Open Settings, then choose Activity.
- Enable Activity detection.
- Adjust the minimum duration for each activity, or turn detection off for a specific activity.
Air can recognize walking, running, biking, sports, elliptical, rowing machine and stationary-bike sessions. Most activities use a 10- to 20-minute minimum before the app creates a detected session. When a session appears, you can edit or delete it before confirmation if the activity type or timing is wrong.
Set the duration according to how you exercise. A longer minimum can avoid short accidental detections; a shorter one can make the app more likely to capture brief sessions. The setting is per activity, so you can keep detection on for one activity and turn it off for another.
Use the app for alarms and review
Because Air is screenless, set alarms and review exercise summaries in Google Health. The app is also where you inspect trends, adjust detection rules and decide whether optional insights are useful enough to justify Premium.
Edge versus Air: which workflow fits you?

Fix common setup and syncing problems
The tracker will not pair
- Connect the tracker to its charging cable and make sure it is powered on.
- Open Google Health and verify that you are signed in to a Google account.
- For Edge, go to Connections > Add a device (or Add more devices) and start the pairing flow again.
- For Air, return to the app’s device-connection flow and select Air again.
- Keep the phone and tracker close together until the prompts finish.
If another Google account was used during the first attempt, sign in with that same account before trying to reconnect; the account is part of the pairing setup. Do not move on to feature customization until the app has completed the device connection.
The app does not show new measurements
- Confirm automatic syncing was accepted during setup.
- Open Google Health while the tracker is charged and nearby, then allow the connection to complete.
- Check that Air is sitting firmly against the skin or that Edge is secured in its band; movement or a gap can affect readings.
- For Air, review Settings > Activity and make sure Activity detection is enabled for the activity you expect to record.
Also check whether the missing item is an advanced feature with eligibility, regional or Premium limits. A feature restriction is different from a failed sync, so confirm the account and availability before repeating setup.
An activity was detected incorrectly
Air’s automatic detection waits for the configured minimum duration, commonly 10 to 20 minutes. Edit the detected session before confirming it, delete it if it was accidental, or change that activity’s minimum duration in Google Health > Settings > Activity.
Edge falls out or loses contact
Press the tracker into the band until you hear or feel the click, then place it on top of your wrist with a snug fit. An unsecured band can let Edge fall, while a loose fit can interrupt sensor contact. Leave room for one pinky finger rather than tightening the band excessively.
Battery life is shorter than expected
Edge’s published maximum is up to seven days, or up to two days with Always-On Display enabled. Check Google Health > Fitbit Edge device settings > Display and turn off Always-On Display if you need longer intervals between charges. GPS, frequent screen wakes and notifications can also increase consumption.
Health-data limits and responsible use
Air is not intended for medical purposes. Treat readings, alerts and estimates as wellness information rather than a diagnosis. Google also limits some advanced features by region, eligibility or Premium subscription, so a menu shown in documentation may not appear on every account.
The official setup and product pages describe the available measurements and controls but do not establish independent accuracy or clinical validation. Use the tracker for trends, reminders and activity guidance, and consult a qualified health professional for medical decisions.
A practical first-day checklist
- Charge the tracker and complete Google Health pairing with your Google account.
- Confirm that the dashboard receives data automatically.
- Fit the tracker on top of your wrist with continuous sensor contact and room for one pinky finger.
- On Edge, choose a watch face, arrange tiles and review notification, vibration and display settings.
- On Air, enable the activities you want automatically detected and set sensible minimum durations.
- Review which advanced tools require Google Health Premium or are restricted in your region.
- Wear the tracker through a normal sleep period and activity session, then review the resulting data in Google Health.
After this first day, adjust only the settings that solve a real problem. If Edge needs longer battery life, change Always-On Display or screen behavior. If Air creates unwanted activity sessions, raise that activity’s minimum duration or disable detection for it. If readings look inconsistent, check placement and band stability before changing subscription or dashboard settings.
