Download the official Everything installer, choose the build that matches your Windows architecture, and enable the Everything service for local NTFS volumes. After the first index is created, search by typing part of a filename. Add external, network, FAT32, or exFAT locations separately under Tools > Options > Folders.
What Everything indexes—and why the setup choice matters
Everything is primarily a filename-and-path search tool. On local NTFS volumes, it builds a native index automatically and monitors changes, so typing a few characters can filter the file list without waiting for a conventional full-disk scan each time.
Storage that is not covered by native NTFS indexing uses a different method called folder indexing. You select the folder or share, Everything scans it, and then keeps that folder index updated. Folder indexing is useful for network shares, mapped drives, FAT32 and exFAT media, and other locations that do not appear as native NTFS volumes. It is slower than native NTFS indexing, and the first scan can take minutes.

Choose the right package before installing
Select the Windows architecture
The official downloads provide x86, x64, ARM, and ARM64 variants. Select the package that matches the architecture of the Windows installation on the computer where Everything will run. Do not select x64 merely because it is common: Windows on ARM devices need an ARM or ARM64 build, while older 32-bit Windows installations need x86.

Windows shows its architecture in Settings > System > About, in the System type field. If that field is not available, check the device information supplied by your administrator or manufacturer before downloading.
Installer or portable version?

For most Windows users, use the installer. Choose portable when you intentionally want a self-contained copy and understand that integration options supplied by the installer will not be configured for you.
Install Everything with the recommended NTFS configuration
- Open the official downloads page through the Everything installation guide. Download the installer for the architecture identified in Windows.
- Run the installer. Follow the guided prompts and review each optional feature instead of accepting every convenience setting automatically.
- Enable the Everything service when the installer offers it. The service performs the low-level indexing and change monitoring for NTFS volumes, while the main Everything program can run as a standard user. This is the recommended arrangement for ordinary local NTFS searches.
- Choose optional integration. Startup launch, desktop or Start-menu shortcuts, the folder right-click command Search Everything…, and protocol or file associations are conveniences, not prerequisites. Enable only the items that fit the way you use Windows.
- Finish and launch Everything. The program should open with its search box and an initially populated or populating result list.
Running Everything as administrator is an alternative, but it is not required when the service is configured. If your organization manages services centrally, follow its policy rather than changing elevation settings yourself.
Let the first NTFS index finish
On first launch, Everything automatically discovers local NTFS volumes and creates its native index. The official usage guide describes the initial indexing as taking a few seconds in normal circumstances, although the exact time depends on the number of files and the computer’s storage activity.
- Wait for the initial index to complete rather than judging the result list while it is still being built.
- Click the search box and type a distinctive part of a filename, such as
invoice. - Confirm that files from the expected local NTFS drive appear. Everything updates the list as you type.
If a local NTFS drive is absent, do not add its root as a folder index as a first response. Check the NTFS index and service configuration first; adding the same NTFS volume through both systems can create duplicate results.

Add an external drive, network share, or non-NTFS folder
Use folder indexing for locations that native NTFS indexing does not cover. This includes network shares, mapped drives, FAT32 and exFAT volumes, and specific folders you want to search even when they are not local NTFS volumes.

- Select Folders in the left pane.
- Click Add and choose the folder, mapped drive, external-drive directory, or network location.
- Confirm the selection and apply the change.
- Wait for the first scan to finish. The location is not available to searches until that initial scan completes.
Folder indexing does not require administrator access or the Everything service. You can therefore index a permitted network or removable-media folder even when you are running the main program as a standard Windows user. Access permissions still apply: Everything cannot list files that your Windows account cannot read.
The first folder scan can take minutes and is normally slower than native NTFS indexing. Keep the external drive connected and the network share reachable while the scan runs. If a removable drive receives a different drive letter later, verify that the configured folder still points to the current location.
Use the right indexing method for each location

Do not add an entire NTFS volume to Folders when it is already covered under NTFS indexing. The official troubleshooting guidance identifies that combination as a cause of duplicate results. For NTFS volumes, use the NTFS options; reserve Folders for locations that need folder indexing.
Run useful searches from the search box
Everything filters as you type, so start with a fragment that is likely to be unique. You can combine terms, exclude names, limit a search to a drive or folder, and use exact path syntax.

These expressions search names and paths. They do not automatically inspect the words inside a document. If you need content searches, configure content indexing separately and use the documented si: search function to query the Windows index from Everything.

Check filters when results look wrong
Everything’s search options can make a valid match disappear. Before rebuilding an index, inspect the active options and filters. In particular, check whether any of these are enabled unintentionally:
- Match Case, which distinguishes uppercase and lowercase letters.
- Match Whole Word, which rejects partial-word matches.
- Match Path, which changes whether directory names are considered as part of the match.
- Match Diacritics, which affects accented characters.
- Enable Regex, which interprets the query as a regular expression rather than an ordinary search.
A query that suddenly returns nothing is often a filter problem, a scope problem, or an index that does not contain the target location—not evidence that the file was deleted.
Troubleshoot missing files in the shortest order
1. Remove accidental search restrictions
Clear the search box and try a short, distinctive filename fragment. Then review Match Case, Match Whole Word, Match Path, Match Diacritics, and Enable Regex. Also remove a drive or folder prefix temporarily if you are unsure where the file is stored.

- For a local NTFS volume, inspect the NTFS index configuration and confirm the volume is present.
- For a network share, mapped drive, FAT32 or exFAT device, open Tools > Options > Folders and confirm the intended folder was added.
- For a newly added folder, wait for its first scan. A folder is unavailable to searches until that scan completes.
3. Check reachability and permissions
Reconnect an external drive, open the network path in File Explorer, and verify that your Windows account can read the folder. Folder indexing cannot overcome a disconnected share, a sleeping removable disk, or an access-denied path.
4. Verify the service and settings
If native NTFS results are missing, confirm that the Everything service is installed and that the program’s service and index settings are configured consistently. The service is what allows the main program to remain a standard-user application while NTFS volumes are indexed and monitored.
5. Force a rebuild only after the checks above
When the location is correct and filters are clear but results remain stale, open Options > Indexes and choose Force Rebuild. Rebuilding discards the current index and creates it again, so allow the process to finish before evaluating the search. A rebuild is a recovery step, not a substitute for adding a missing network or external folder under Folders.

6. Eliminate duplicate results
When every file appears twice, check whether an NTFS volume was also added as a folder index. NTFS volumes are indexed automatically; remove the overlapping folder entry and keep the native NTFS index for that volume.
Content search is a separate decision
Everything’s default strength is fast filename and path lookup. Searching inside PDFs, Word files, or other documents requires content indexing, which is configured separately from filename indexing. The Options documentation identifies content indexing as requiring Everything 1.5 and documents the si: function for searching the Windows index.
Do not troubleshoot a missing word inside a document by rebuilding the filename index. First decide whether the file itself is found by name; only then configure the separate content-search capability if the text inside it is what you need.

Practical habits after setup
Keep the native NTFS path as your default whenever a local volume uses NTFS. It requires less maintenance because Everything discovers the volume and monitors its changes automatically. Use folder indexing deliberately for locations outside that system, and remove entries for folders or drives that are no longer reachable so the list reflects the storage you actually use.
When moving an external drive between computers or ports, check its assigned drive letter and the configured folder path. A previously indexed path may no longer point to the intended media after Windows assigns a different letter. For network locations, make sure the share is available under the same path and that your account still has read access before diagnosing stale results.
Optional startup, shortcut, context-menu, protocol, and file-association choices can be changed according to how you work; none is needed for the core filename search. The essential configuration is simply a matching build, a completed index, and the correct indexing method for each storage type.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to run Everything as an administrator?
No. With the Everything service enabled, the service handles low-level NTFS indexing and change monitoring while the main program runs as a standard user. Folder indexing also works without administrator privileges or the service. Running the program as administrator is an alternative, not a requirement.
How do I make Everything search an external USB drive?
