To set up Ethernet link aggregation, both your PC and router or switch must support the same aggregation mode, such as LACP (also called IEEE 802.3ad). Configure the two endpoints first, then connect the designated Ethernet ports. The resulting logical link can spread traffic across multiple physical cables and keep the connection working if one cable fails, but one download or other single network flow normally will not run at the sum of both link speeds.

The exact clicks on the router and the PC depend on the router model, operating system, Ethernet adapter and driver. Use the procedure below as a safe framework, then follow the model-specific instructions for your hardware.

What Ethernet link aggregation does

Ethernet link aggregation joins two or more physical Ethernet connections into one logical link between two directly connected devices. The group is called a link aggregation group (LAG). A PC might use two Ethernet ports connected to two aggregation-enabled LAN ports on a router or managed switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Traffic is assigned to individual member links according to the mode and hashing rules implemented by the endpoints. The links do not become one cable with a higher electrical speed. MikroTik’s RouterOS documentation states the distinction directly: "Interface bonding does not create an interface with a larger link speed."

  • More total capacity for multiple conversations: traffic to several destinations can be distributed over different members.
  • Link resilience: if one member cable or port fails, the logical connection can remain available on the surviving member, depending on the mode and implementation.
  • No guaranteed doubling for one flow: a single file copy, stream or connection is usually selected onto one physical member rather than striped across all members.

Aggregation is therefore most useful when a PC serves several clients, transfers data to multiple systems, runs several simultaneous sessions, or needs continued connectivity after a cable failure. It is less useful if the only goal is to make one connection to one server twice as fast.

Check compatibility before connecting cables

Having two Ethernet sockets is not enough. The adapter, operating system and driver must support teaming or bonding, and the router or switch must support aggregation on the specific ports you intend to use. Check the exact model documentation rather than relying on a product family name.

Check What to verify Why it matters
Router or switch model Whether it supports LACP, static LAG, or both; the number and identity of supported LAN ports; and the maximum member count. Aggregation may be limited to particular ports and may not be available on every hardware revision.
PC operating system Whether the installed edition and network stack expose teaming or bonding. Features available on a server edition may not exist in the same form on a consumer desktop edition.
Ethernet adapters Exact adapter models, driver versions and vendor support for teaming. A second physical port does not prove that the driver can create a team.
Mode match Both ends must be configured for the same compatible mode: dynamic LACP or static LAG. LACP negotiation and static aggregation are different configurations and are not interchangeable.
Link characteristics Supported speed, duplex, cabling and any jumbo-frame settings on every member. Speed or framing differences can prevent a group from forming or cause unstable traffic.

Intel’s teaming documentation distinguishes dynamic 802.3ad LACP from static aggregation and requires the switch to match the selected mode. Its mismatch guidance, last reviewed on February 20, 2025, also identifies speed/duplex, jumbo-frame and spanning-tree differences as common causes of problems.

Choose LACP, static LAG or active-backup

LACP (dynamic IEEE 802.3ad)

LACP lets the two endpoints negotiate membership and monitor the state of the links. Use it when both the PC-side software and router or switch support dynamic IEEE 802.3ad. NETGEAR recommends LACP when both devices support it. Negotiation generally makes configuration errors easier to identify than a silent static mismatch, but it still requires matching port membership and compatible settings.

Static LAG

Static aggregation creates a group without LACP negotiation. Both ends must be manually configured for static LAG. A static configuration on one side cannot be paired with LACP on the other. Because there is no negotiation protocol to reject an incorrect peer, a wrong port, mode or cabling choice can produce confusing symptoms or a loop.

Active-backup

Active-backup is a failover arrangement, not the same as load-distributing aggregation. One link carries traffic while another waits to take over. RouterOS lists active-backup separately from LACP and other bonding modes. Choose it when uninterrupted connectivity is more important than using multiple links at the same time, and make sure both endpoints support the required failover behavior.

Mode Negotiation Traffic use Best fit
LACP / dynamic 802.3ad Yes, between compatible peers Distributes flows across members Preferred when both devices support dynamic LACP
Static LAG No Distributes flows according to the implementation Devices that support static aggregation but not LACP
Active-backup Implementation-dependent failover Normally one active member at a time Resilience without a requirement for aggregate throughput

Follow the safe installation order

Configure the logical group before you make the second physical connection. NETGEAR warns that connecting multiple cables before either endpoint has loop prevention can create a network loop; its support guidance notes that loops can slow or stop normal traffic.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Inventory the equipment. Record the router or switch model, the exact LAN ports it allows in a LAG, the PC adapter models, the operating system and the driver versions.
  2. Select one compatible mode. Prefer LACP when both sides support it. Use static LAG only when that is the common supported option. Do not mix LACP and static settings.
  3. Disconnect extra cables. Leave only the existing working connection while you configure the two endpoints. Do not connect the planned member links yet.
  4. Configure the router or switch. Enable the chosen mode and select the designated ports.
  5. Configure the PC. Create the team or bond using the same mode, then place the IP configuration on the logical interface rather than on individual member interfaces.
  6. Connect the members. Use the required Ethernet cables from the PC’s designated ports to the router or switch’s designated aggregation ports.
  7. Verify state and traffic. Confirm that the router or switch reports an established LAG or LACP state, that the PC reports all intended members as available, and that normal network traffic passes.

Configure the router or switch

Router menus differ by model, firmware and region. A port that looks like an ordinary LAN socket may not participate in aggregation, so use the model’s support page or manual to identify the correct pair or group before changing settings.

NETGEAR Nighthawk example

On models covered by NETGEAR’s current setup guidance, sign in to the router and open ADVANCED > Advanced Setup > Ethernet Port Aggregation. Some models label the page Ethernet Settings. Select Enable (LACP-IEEE 802.3ad) when the PC or switch supports LACP. Select Enable static LAG only when static aggregation is the compatible mode on both ends, then apply the setting. The supported port numbers and number of members are model-specific.

ASUS example

ASUS documents a path of LAN > Switch Control > Bonding / Link aggregation. Choose Enable, apply the change, and then enable the matching LACP function on the peer device. ASUS specifically advises checking the product model page because supported aggregation ports and capabilities vary.

Managed-switch configuration

On a managed switch, create an LAG or LACP channel containing the exact switch ports connected to the PC. Apply the same VLAN membership, tagging, MTU and speed policy to the logical channel that you would use for a normal PC connection. Do not place one member in a different VLAN or attach the cables to ports outside the configured group.

Configure the PC

There is no universal PC procedure. The available method depends on the operating system, adapter family and driver package. Intel’s support material documents adapter-specific teaming modes and requires checking support for the precise adapter and operating-system version. A desktop operating system may expose different facilities from Windows Server, even on similar hardware.

Windows

  1. Identify the exact Ethernet adapter models in Device Manager or the system’s hardware information panel.
  2. Install the current driver and the adapter vendor’s supported teaming component, if the vendor provides one for that Windows edition. Do not assume that a generic inbox driver exposes teaming.
  3. Open the vendor’s teaming interface and create a team containing only the adapters that will connect to the router or switch.
  4. Choose dynamic 802.3ad/LACP or static aggregation to match the router or switch. Do not select a mode merely because it is available in the software.
  5. Assign the IP address, gateway and DNS settings to the resulting team interface. Leave the member adapters as team components rather than configuring separate addresses on them.
  6. Apply the team, wait for the operating system to create the logical adapter, and only then connect the second cable.

If the teaming option is missing, check the adapter’s support matrix and the Windows edition before changing registry settings or installing unrelated software. A second port may require a different driver package, a server edition, or a different adapter that explicitly supports teaming.

Linux bonding

Linux provides the kernel bonding driver. Its 802.3ad mode requires a peer that supports dynamic IEEE 802.3ad aggregation. Configure a bond interface, add the two physical interfaces as its members, select mode 802.3ad, and put the IP configuration on the bond. The exact persistent syntax depends on whether the distribution uses NetworkManager, systemd-networkd, netplan or another network manager.

For a temporary test on a system that uses the traditional ip tools, the conceptual sequence is:

sudo modprobe bonding
sudo ip link add bond0 type bond mode 802.3ad
sudo ip link set enp1s0 master bond0
sudo ip link set enp2s0 master bond0
sudo ip link set bond0 up

Interface names, permissions and address configuration differ by distribution. Treat that sequence as a test outline, then create the equivalent persistent configuration in your distribution’s documented network manager. Do not assign the same address independently to both member interfaces.

Connect, verify and document the result

After both endpoints are configured, connect each PC member port to the corresponding aggregation-enabled router or switch port. Check the status on both sides before testing performance.

  • The router or switch should show the LAG as up and, for LACP, show the peer as synchronized or collecting/distributing according to its terminology.
  • The PC should show one logical team or bond and each intended physical member as available.
  • Each cable should negotiate the expected speed and duplex. A link that falls back to a lower speed can reduce the group’s useful capacity.
  • Ping the local gateway and a known host, then test several simultaneous sessions rather than judging the setup from one file transfer.
  • Record the port numbers, mode, member interfaces and firmware or driver versions. This makes later replacement or troubleshooting safer.

If the group comes up but one member is not forwarding, first compare the mode, port membership, speed/duplex, MTU or jumbo-frame setting, VLAN configuration and spanning-tree behavior on both endpoints.

Understand real-world performance

Traffic pattern Likely behavior Reason
One TCP connection to one destination Usually limited to one member link The transmit hash normally keeps a flow on one physical path to preserve ordering.
Several connections to several destinations Can use multiple members and approach a higher aggregate rate The hashing inputs can place different flows on different links.
One member cable fails Remaining members can continue, with less available capacity Failover depends on the selected mode and endpoint implementation.
Active-backup mode Normally one member carries traffic; the other is ready to take over It is designed for resilience rather than simultaneous load distribution.

Intel notes that throughput is higher to multiple addresses than to one destination regardless of adapter count. Linux bonding selects an outgoing member through a transmit hash policy, so the traffic pattern, hash inputs and peer implementation affect the result. Do not advertise a percentage improvement or promise that two 1-Gbps links will make one 2-Gbps download.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Aggregation also does not increase the speed of a router’s Internet uplink. If the WAN connection is slower than the LAN group, Internet downloads remain limited by the WAN service, the remote server and the single-flow behavior described above. The most visible gains usually occur in local transfers involving multiple concurrent flows or multiple clients.

Troubleshoot common failures

The LAG never becomes active

  • Confirm that both ends use LACP or both use static LAG; a mixed mode will not negotiate correctly.
  • Verify that every cable is plugged into a port listed for aggregation on the router or switch.
  • Check that the PC team or bond contains the intended physical adapters and that their drivers support the selected mode.
  • Compare speed, duplex, MTU, jumbo-frame settings, VLAN membership and spanning-tree settings.
  • Remove the second cable, restore a single working link, correct the configuration, and reconnect only after both sides are ready.

The network slows or stops after the second cable is connected

Disconnect the extra cable immediately and return to one link. A loop can occur when multiple connections are made before the endpoints have a functioning LAG or loop-prevention mechanism. Recheck the designated ports and ensure that neither cable connects the PC to two unrelated switch groups.

Only one member shows traffic

That can be normal for one flow. Test several simultaneous connections to different destinations. If multiple independent sessions still use only one member, inspect the team or bond mode, the switch’s LAG state and its load-distribution policy. A member that is down, suspended or marked as an individual port indicates a configuration or physical-link problem rather than a performance limit.

Connections are intermittent

Compare negotiated speed and duplex on every member, replace suspect cables, and make sure both ports use the same MTU and VLAN settings. Disable experimental jumbo frames until the basic LAG is stable. Review the router, switch and operating-system logs for LACP partner changes or adapter resets.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The PC loses its address after creating the team

Move the IP address, default gateway and DNS settings to the logical team or bond interface. Remove duplicate addresses from the physical members, then renew the address or restart the network service using the operating system’s normal procedure.

When new hardware is necessary

If the existing PC has only one supported port, or its adapter and driver cannot team, a dual-port Ethernet adapter or an Ethernet NIC with LACP support may be appropriate. Verify the operating-system and driver support before purchase; the extra socket alone is not a guarantee.

If the router lacks aggregation, an aggregation-capable router or managed switch can provide the peer function, but it must support the required mode, port count and link speed. Check the exact model requirements first. Replacing hardware does not make a single Internet flow faster unless the rest of the path and application can use multiple flows.

Maintenance after setup

  • Keep a note of which physical ports belong to the LAG and label both ends of each cable.
  • Update router or switch firmware and NIC drivers only after confirming that the new versions retain aggregation support.
  • When replacing one member cable, change one cable at a time and verify that the LAG remains established.
  • Before changing VLANs, MTU or spanning-tree settings, schedule a maintenance window; a mismatch can suspend a member or interrupt the entire logical link.
  • Periodically test failover by disconnecting one member during a controlled maintenance period, then reconnect it and verify that the group returns to its normal state.

What to expect from a successful setup

A correct configuration ends with one logical PC interface, an established LAG or LACP state on the router or switch, and normal connectivity while all intended members are available. The practical benefits are shared capacity across independent flows and continuity when a member fails. It is not a way to turn two cables into one faster physical interface, and it cannot overcome the speed of a slower WAN link or a remote server that offers only one flow.
