To set up EssentialsX chat, install the EssentialsX core and the separate EssentialsX Chat module on a supported Bukkit-derived server, then add Vault and a permissions plugin such as LuckPerms if you want prefixes, suffixes, or group-aware formatting. After the first start, edit plugins/Essentials/config.yml under chat:, using either one global format or a group-formats map.
The setup is mostly configuration, but three details determine whether it works: every EssentialsX module must use the same version, Vault must load before EssentialsX can read permission metadata, and the format must contain the placeholders you expect, such as {PREFIX} and {MESSAGE}. The guide below takes you from an empty server to a tested chat format and then covers the common reasons a rank prefix does not appear.
What EssentialsX Chat adds
EssentialsX Chat is an optional module, not part of the core EssentialsX jar. The core plugin provides the main Essentials features; the Chat module handles message formatting and chat-related permissions. Install both when you want EssentialsX to control how player messages appear.
EssentialsX can format names, ranks, worlds and messages, but it does not create permission groups by itself. Vault provides the bridge between EssentialsX and a permissions plugin. A plugin such as LuckPerms stores each player’s group and metadata, including prefixes and suffixes; Vault makes that information available to EssentialsX.

If another chat plugin also formats messages, you can see duplicated prefixes, two names, or a format that ignores your Essentials configuration. Decide which plugin owns chat formatting and disable or reconfigure the competing formatter before troubleshooting EssentialsX.
Requirements and compatible components

Download the modules that match your server and Minecraft version. Keep the core and every EssentialsX add-on on the same EssentialsX release; mixing versions can produce missing features, load errors or inconsistent configuration behavior.
Install EssentialsX Chat
- Choose the server platform. Use a supported Bukkit-derived platform. Paper is the recommended modern choice for Minecraft 1.13 and later according to EssentialsX’s installation guidance.
- Stop the server before copying files. A stopped server prevents partially written plugin data and makes the first configuration predictable.
- Place the jars in
plugins/. Copy the EssentialsX core jar and the EssentialsX Chat jar into the server’splugins/directory. Add the Vault jar and LuckPerms jar when you need rank metadata or group-specific formatting. If a download arrives in an archive, extract the jar files first; do not leave the archive itself as the only file inplugins/. - Start the server once. EssentialsX creates its data directory and configuration files during startup. Watch the console for a successful enable message and for dependency or version errors.
- Stop the server cleanly after the first start. This flushes the generated configuration to disk before you edit it.
The resulting paths normally include plugins/Essentials/ and, after generation, plugins/Essentials/config.yml. Back up the entire Essentials folder before a major upgrade. When moving between releases, review the new configuration and update your existing settings rather than blindly replacing files or carrying obsolete options forward.
Open the chat configuration
EssentialsX stores chat settings in plugins/Essentials/config.yml, beneath the top-level chat: key. YAML indentation is significant: use spaces consistently, keep child keys indented under chat:, and quote a format string that contains ampersands or punctuation.

A minimal global configuration looks like this:

The color codes are written with an ampersand in the YAML value; the HTML code sample displays those ampersands as & so the page remains valid HTML. In your actual YAML file, type ordinary ampersands, for example &7 and &f.
Do not add tabs to the file. A malformed indent or an unbalanced quote can prevent EssentialsX from reading the setting, in which case the console will usually report a configuration error when the plugin loads.
Choose a global format or per-group formats
One global format
Use format when every rank should share the same layout. It is the simplest option to maintain: one edit changes chat for everyone, and a newly created group automatically uses the same pattern. A readable starting point is:

Per-group group-formats
Use group-formats when different groups need distinct layouts. Group keys must match the permission-plugin group names exactly. For example:

If a player’s group has no matching entry, the resulting chat may fall back to the general format or another configured behavior, depending on the installed EssentialsX release. Verify the effective group name in LuckPerms rather than guessing from a display label.

Do not configure both approaches casually. Decide which one is the source of truth for your server, then remove stale entries that could make later edits confusing.
Use EssentialsX chat placeholders
Placeholders are replaced when a message is rendered. The upstream EssentialsX configuration documents the following tokens:

Start with {DISPLAYNAME} and {MESSAGE}, then add rank or world tokens only when they answer a real organizational need. Every extra color and label competes with the message itself.

Make LuckPerms prefixes appear
- Install and enable Vault and LuckPerms. Both jars must load without errors. Vault is the bridge; EssentialsX cannot read LuckPerms metadata if Vault is absent or disabled.
- Assign a group. Put the player in the intended LuckPerms group. Confirm that the group name is the one you plan to use in
group-formats, including capitalization and spelling. - Set the prefix or suffix in LuckPerms. Store the desired rank text as group metadata. The exact command depends on your LuckPerms version and chosen context, so use the command syntax documented for the installed release rather than copying a command intended for a different version.
- Put the matching placeholder in EssentialsX. A LuckPerms prefix is not visible merely because it exists. The active format must contain
{PREFIX}; a suffix requires{SUFFIX}. If you use{GROUP}instead, EssentialsX prints the group identifier rather than the configured prefix text. - Check the selected format. If
group-formatsis active, ensure the player’s effective group has a corresponding key. A correct prefix can still appear to be missing when a different group format omits{PREFIX}.
Prefixes and suffixes can also be context-sensitive in a permissions system. A player may receive different metadata by world or server context, so test in the same world and context where the problem occurs.

EssentialsX documents separate permissions for chat styling. The core nodes are:

Use least privilege rather than granting a wildcard permission to every player. Broad access is easier to configure, but individual nodes give moderators a practical way to limit abuse and preserve readable chat. RGB support is version-dependent, so check the release you installed before documenting it for players.

Restart and verify the result
- Save
config.ymlwith valid YAML indentation and quotes. - Prefer a controlled server restart after changing the file. A restart ensures EssentialsX, Vault and the permissions plugin all reload together.
- Join with a normal player account, not only an operator account. Operators can have permissions that ordinary users do not.
- Send a plain message, then test a message containing any color or formatting code you intentionally granted.
- Test at least one player in each configured group. Confirm that the expected prefix, name, separator and message all appear once.
- Read the console during startup and after the test. Dependency failures, malformed YAML and version mismatches are easier to identify there than from the in-game symptom alone.
Troubleshoot missing prefixes and incorrect formats
The prefix is completely absent
- Confirm the active format contains
{PREFIX}. A prefix stored in LuckPerms is ignored if the token is not informator the selected group entry. - Check that Vault is installed and enabled. EssentialsX uses Vault to read permission-plugin metadata.
- Verify the player actually belongs to the intended LuckPerms group and that the prefix is attached to that group in the same context.
- Look for another chat plugin that is intercepting or replacing EssentialsX’s output.
The wrong group style appears
- Compare the LuckPerms group name with the key under
group-formatscharacter for character. - Check inherited groups. The player’s effective group may not be the group you expected, or a context-specific assignment may be active.
- Temporarily test with one simple global
format. If the global format works, the problem is in group selection or group-key matching rather than the placeholder itself.
Chat shows duplicated names, prefixes or colors
- Inspect every plugin that advertises chat formatting, channels or prefixes. Disable the extra formatter or configure it not to rewrite EssentialsX output.
- Remove duplicate rank text from either the LuckPerms prefix or the EssentialsX format. For example, do not put a literal
[Mod]in the format when the prefix already supplies[Mod].
EssentialsX does not load after an edit
- Restore the last known-good backup of
config.yml, then reapply one change at a time. - Check indentation, missing colons and unmatched quotes. YAML treats a single misplaced space as a structural error.
- Stop and restart cleanly rather than repeatedly editing a live file while the server is running.
Color or RGB codes do not work
- Check that the player has the relevant node, such as
essentials.chat.colororessentials.chat.rgb. - Confirm that the installed EssentialsX release supports the capability you are testing. RGB behavior is version-dependent.
- Test with a plain message first so a formatting-permission problem is not confused with a malformed global format.
Maintain the setup through upgrades
Keep the EssentialsX core and all EssentialsX modules on the same version. Upgrade the jars as a set, back up plugins/Essentials/, and review configuration changes between releases. A configuration option that existed in one release may be renamed or documented differently in another.

If you add a new group, decide whether it should inherit the global format or receive an explicit group-formats entry; leaving that decision implicit is a common source of inconsistent chat.
Recommended configuration workflow
For a small server, begin with one restrained global format:

Move to group-formats when a real group-specific requirement appears, not merely because the option exists. This progression isolates errors: first prove that EssentialsX Chat renders messages, then prove Vault can supply metadata, then add per-group variation and optional player-entered formatting.
