An imported phone can show an eSIM option and still fail activation on a US carrier. The reliable order is: identify the exact regional model, confirm that it is unlocked, run the intended carrier’s IMEI and—when requested—EID check, obtain that carrier’s activation method, and then test the line. Only after those checks should you port a number or buy a plan.
Why imported phones need a compatibility check
Phone families are sold in different regional and carrier variants. Two devices marketed under the same product name can have different software, modem support, SIM combinations, or carrier approvals. An eSIM menu by itself proves only that the handset has some eSIM capability; it does not prove that a particular US carrier will activate it.
Matching LTE or 5G bands is not enough either. The carrier may require approved VoLTE/IMS registration, emergency-calling support, Wi-Fi calling, or a particular software configuration. The original carrier’s settings can also affect a device that it did not sell.

Compatibility is therefore a carrier-and-variant question, not simply a hardware question. Check the phone with the carrier you actually intend to use. A successful result with one carrier does not establish that another carrier will accept the same phone, its second IMEI, or its eSIM identifier.

Collect the phone details before contacting a carrier
Find the complete model and regional variant
Record the manufacturer’s full model number, not just a family name such as “Galaxy” or “Pixel.” Also note the country or market where the phone was sold and its operating-system version. The exact variant is what the carrier’s database evaluates.
Keep a photograph or written copy of the label and About screen. A seller’s listing may use a global product name while the phone itself has a market-specific suffix. Give support the full designation exactly as displayed rather than guessing from the retail box.
Record IMEI, IMEI2, and EID
- IMEI: the identifier commonly used for network and bring-your-own-device checks.
- IMEI2: a second identifier on phones designed for two cellular lines. Use the identifier associated with the line or SIM slot the carrier asks about.
- EID: the eSIM identifier. Some carrier checkers request it when they cannot establish eSIM eligibility from the IMEI alone.
These identifiers are normally visible in the phone’s About or device-information screen. The exact menu label differs by manufacturer. If the phone has a physical identifier screen, the same information may appear there. Copy the values carefully; one mistyped digit can produce an “unknown” or incompatible result.

Do not substitute an IMEI for an EID or assume that IMEI2 is interchangeable with the first IMEI. When a carrier asks for a particular identifier, enter that identifier and state whether you are activating the physical-SIM slot or the eSIM line.
Confirm that the phone is unlocked
A SIM lock can prevent activation even when the hardware is otherwise compatible. Contact the original carrier or seller to remove the lock before attempting US activation. Keep written confirmation of the unlock and ask whether any waiting period applies.
Verizon says an imported bring-your-own-device phone must be unlocked for eSIM activation and that activation can take up to 24 hours after unlocking. Verizon also warns that a lock can prevent two lines from different carriers from working on a dual-SIM phone.
An unlocked phone is not the same thing as a carrier-approved phone. Unlocking removes one restriction; it does not add missing bands, change the regional firmware, or make an unsupported EID eligible. Complete both the unlock check and the intended carrier’s device check.

Use the IMEI checker first
Open the target US carrier’s official BYOD checker and enter the exact IMEI it requests. If the checker asks for the EID, enter the EID shown in the phone’s settings or identifier display. Do this before porting your number or paying for a plan.
T-Mobile’s process uses the IMEI and may request the EID for eSIM eligibility. It distinguishes results such as incompatible, blocked, and unknown, and directs customers to support when it cannot confirm compatibility. A result for one IMEI does not automatically establish that the phone’s second line or second identifier is eligible.

Run a separate check for a second line when the carrier requests a second IMEI or when the phone exposes separate identifiers. Save screenshots of the result and the date checked; databases and carrier policies can change.
Understand what a passed check does—and does not—mean
A passed checker is useful evidence that the carrier can accept the device identifier. It is not a promise of every feature or of a particular level of performance. T-Mobile says it cannot test call quality, performance, data speed, feature compatibility, or other functions for devices it did not sell; experience can vary with the original carrier’s settings.

Only the precise model, software, and carrier approval rules can settle questions about VoLTE/IMS registration, emergency calling, Wi-Fi calling, 5G availability, and the exact dual-SIM combination. Ask support to confirm those points if they matter to your use case. A generic statement that a phone “supports the network” may refer only to basic registration, not to every calling or data feature.

When comparing carriers, use the same questions for each one: Will it accept this exact model and IMEI? Is the EID eligible for eSIM? Must the phone be unlocked? Is the desired physical-SIM/eSIM or two-eSIM combination supported? Is there a physical-SIM fallback? Which calls, data services, and device-specific features are documented for this model?
Obtain the carrier-issued eSIM activation
An eSIM profile is not a generic code that can be purchased separately. The carrier provisions the line and supplies the activation route for that account and device. The commercial step is enrollment in the carrier’s BYOD service and plan after compatibility is confirmed; plan pricing and taxes depend on the carrier and plan you select.
Common activation methods
- Carrier activation: the phone receives a notification that a cellular plan is ready.
- QR code: the phone scans a code supplied by the carrier.
- Carrier app or link: the carrier’s application or a web link starts installation.
- Manual entry: the carrier supplies details that you type into the eSIM setup screen.
- Device-to-device transfer: a supported phone transfers an existing line to the new phone.
Ask support which method applies before deleting an existing profile or resetting the phone. If a transfer option is unavailable, the carrier must provide another method. Never buy or reuse an eSIM QR code advertised for a different account; activation information is issued for a specific carrier line and device eligibility process.

Apple’s nearby iPhone Quick Transfer requires carrier support. For Apple’s listed process, both phones must be signed in to the Apple Account, the old iPhone must be unlocked, the devices must be nearby with Bluetooth enabled, and the new iPhone must use iOS 18.4 or later. When the new plan activates, the old SIM is deactivated.
Plan for that deactivation when moving a number. Keep the old phone available until the new line has registered and you have completed a test call. If the carrier does not offer Quick Transfer for the plan or imported variant, request its QR, app, link, or manual-entry route instead.
Verizon QR-code differences
Verizon says some Android eSIM activations require a QR code and provides device-specific instructions. Its stated process for iPhone 12 and newer does not require a QR code. That exception belongs to Verizon’s process and should not be generalized to another carrier, phone model, or activation workflow.

Install the eSIM on the phone
iPhone: QR code or post-setup installation
- During iPhone setup, use the Camera to scan the carrier’s QR code when prompted.
- If setup is complete, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) and choose Add eSIM.
- Follow the carrier’s prompts. A confirmation code may be required.
- For carrier activation, accept the notification that the cellular plan is ready. For an app, link, or manual method, follow the carrier’s supplied instructions instead of guessing values.
The wording can differ by iOS release and region. If the carrier’s instructions conflict with a generic screen description, use the carrier’s current instructions. Keep Wi-Fi available during installation if the carrier’s process requires an internet connection.
Imported Android phones
Android manufacturers use different menus, so there is no single reliable path for every imported model. Open the phone’s current SIM or mobile-network settings, choose the option to add or download a SIM/eSIM, and use the carrier’s QR code, app, link, or manual details. If the menu does not show an eSIM option, verify the exact variant before assuming that the hardware is defective.
Some imported phones expose eSIM controls only after a software update or after a carrier profile is requested, while others have hardware that differs by market. Do not flash regional software or change settings solely to force an eSIM menu; ask the manufacturer or carrier whether that action is supported for the model.
Keep the physical SIM as a fallback
If the phone or carrier does not support eSIM for that variant, ask whether the exact model is accepted with a physical SIM. Verizon explicitly permits a physical-SIM BYOD route when a device lacks eSIM, and T-Mobile also offers a physical-SIM path. Acceptance still depends on the carrier’s device check.
A physical-SIM tray alone does not prove US compatibility. The slot, radio firmware, lock status, and carrier approval still have to match. Request a carrier-issued SIM and follow its activation instructions rather than assuming any previously used SIM will provision the line.
Verify that the new line actually works
- Wait for the profile to finish installing and for the line to show a carrier connection.
- Check that the phone displays the intended line label or carrier name.
- Place a test call and send a message if those services are part of the plan.
- Turn off Wi-Fi briefly and test mobile data.
- Test any feature you specifically need, such as Wi-Fi calling or 5G, because a passed IMEI check does not guarantee it.
If a call cannot be made after activation, Apple directs users to contact the carrier. Provide support with the full model number, regional variant, IMEI or IMEI2, EID, and the exact error shown on screen. If you are moving an existing number, verify inbound calls and messages as well as outgoing service before discarding the old SIM.
Set up two lines without assuming every dual-SIM feature
Confirm the supported SIM combination
“Dual SIM” can mean a physical SIM plus an eSIM, or two eSIMs. A phone may support one combination but not the other, and the carrier may accept only one of the phone’s identifiers. Confirm the combination for the exact regional model before activating the second line.
Verizon’s published dual-SIM guidance applies only to listed qualifying Pixel models and requires an unlocked device. That is an example of why a family name or an eSIM menu cannot establish support for every model.
Check each carrier and identifier
Run the relevant IMEI check for each line and provide an EID when requested. If the two lines use different carriers, both carriers must accept the device, and the phone must be unlocked. Verizon specifically says a lock can block two lines from different carriers.

Choose default voice, messaging, and data lines
After both profiles are installed, use the phone’s current SIM or mobile-network settings to select the default voice line, messaging line, and mobile-data line. The labels and controls vary by iPhone model, Android version, and manufacturer, so follow the device’s on-screen instructions rather than a menu path meant for another model.
Do not assume that both lines provide simultaneous active data in every configuration. Some phones keep one line available for calls while the other supplies data, and behavior can change when a call is in progress. Test the arrangement you actually need, including receiving a call on one line while data is enabled on the other.

The IMEI checker says incompatible, blocked, or unknown
- Read the IMEI directly from the phone again and compare every digit with your entry.
- Confirm that you used the identifier for the intended SIM slot or eSIM line.
- Ask the carrier whether the result means a network block, an unsupported model, or a database gap.
- Give support the complete model number and sales region; a family name is not enough.
T-Mobile distinguishes incompatible, blocked, and unknown results and advises contacting support when it cannot confirm compatibility. Do not port a number or order a nonrefundable plan while the result remains unexplained.
The carrier rejects the EID
Recheck the EID from the phone’s identifier screen, then ask whether the specific regional variant is eligible for that carrier’s eSIM service. An EID is an identifier, not proof that the carrier supports the phone. If the carrier cannot verify it, ask whether it can activate the same model by physical SIM.

Verify with the original carrier that the SIM lock was fully removed. Verizon says activation may take up to 24 hours after unlocking. If the waiting period has passed, rerun the carrier’s device check and contact activation support.
The profile installs but calls or data fail
Restart the phone, confirm that the new line is enabled, and check which line is selected for mobile data. If service still fails, contact the carrier and manufacturer with the exact model, software version, identifiers, and error message. Provisioning problems or original-carrier software settings can affect imported devices even after an eSIM profile installs.
You need a physical-SIM fallback
Ask the intended carrier whether it supports a physical SIM for that exact model and region. Request a carrier-issued SIM and follow its BYOD activation process. Do not infer acceptance merely because the phone has a physical-SIM tray.
Final pre-activation checklist
- Full model number and original sales region recorded.
- Operating-system version noted.
- IMEI and, where applicable, IMEI2 copied accurately.
- EID available if the carrier requests it.
- Original-carrier SIM lock removed.
- Target carrier’s IMEI check passed or support has explained the result.
- eSIM method obtained directly from the carrier.
- Desired physical-SIM/eSIM or dual-eSIM combination confirmed.
- Calls, messages, data, and any required calling features tested after installation.
The practical verdict is compatibility-first: an imported phone works in the US only when its exact variant, unlock status, identifiers, carrier approval, and intended SIM combination all line up. If any one of those checks fails, resolve that issue or use a confirmed physical-SIM alternative before moving your number.

Will my imported phone work with a US carrier?
Only the carrier can confirm that for the exact model, regional variant, IMEI and, when applicable, EID. Run the carrier’s official BYOD check before buying a plan or porting a number; an eSIM menu or matching bands alone is not enough.

How do I check whether my phone supports eSIM?
Look for an EID and an eSIM option in the phone’s identifier or mobile-network settings, then ask the intended carrier to verify eSIM eligibility. Hardware support does not guarantee activation on that carrier.
Where do I find my IMEI or EID?
Use the phone’s About or device-information screen, or its physical identifier screen if available. Record IMEI, IMEI2 and EID exactly as shown and provide the specific identifier the carrier requests.
Can I use two numbers on one imported phone?
Possibly. Confirm whether the exact variant supports physical SIM plus eSIM or two eSIMs, whether each carrier accepts the relevant identifier, and whether the phone is unlocked. The default voice, messaging and data controls vary by device.
