Open iPhone Duo to its 7.6-inch inner display, launch the first app, then drag a second app from the home indicator to the left or right edge until the Split View drop area appears. Release for a 50/50 layout. Each side remains an independent app area; folding, rotating, or closing the phone makes iOS rearrange the interface for the active display and posture.

What dual-screen multitasking means on iPhone Duo

Apple describes iPhone Duo as its first foldable iPhone. It has a 7.6-inch inner display when opened and a 5.4-inch outer display when closed. Apple says the inner screen is 50 percent larger than the display on iPhone 18 Pro Max, while the closed outer screen provides 90 percent of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro. Those measurements are Apple’s 2026 product figures, not independent measurements.

The multitasking feature is a two-app Split View arrangement on the open inner screen. The first app occupies one half and the second app occupies the other. Apple’s example places Siri beside Mail, but the same placement gesture is intended for any pair of apps whose layouts can adapt to the inner display. The two areas operate independently, so you can interact with one without leaving the other.

Apple summarizes the productivity goal this way: “The expansive display on iPhone Duo supercharges productivity with Split View multitasking and seamless app switching.” That statement appeared in Apple’s newsroom product update on October 15, 2026. Split View is therefore more than simply stretching one phone app across a wider canvas: it creates two simultaneous app regions, while iOS continues to adapt the regions as the hinge moves.

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

What you need before creating a split screen

  • An open iPhone Duo: Split View uses the 7.6-inch inner display. The closed 5.4-inch display is treated as a single-screen phone interface.
  • Two apps that can use the available layout: iOS can run apps that were not built with the iOS 27 SDK, but apps updated for newer SDKs can make better use of the full inner screen.
  • A clear home-indicator gesture: The second app is dragged from the home indicator, not merely tapped from the Home Screen.
  • A supported app presentation: The most useful pairs are apps with resizable layouts, a sidebar or split navigation on the regular inner-display size class, or picture-in-picture support for video.

There is no requirement in the supplied Apple guidance that every app be rebuilt specifically for iPhone Duo. Compatibility is progressive: an older app may open and function, while a newer build may expose a more useful two-column navigation, better resizing, or controls positioned more intelligently around the hinge.

Set up two apps side by side

  1. Open the phone fully. Unfold iPhone Duo until the 7.6-inch inner display is active. Starting with the inner screen avoids trying to create a two-app arrangement on the smaller outer display.
  2. Open the first app. Launch the app you want to keep in one half of the screen. Apple’s demonstration uses Siri beside Mail; a messaging, notes, browser, calendar, or document app can fill the same first-app role if its interface supports the layout.
  3. Bring up the second app from the home indicator. Touch the home indicator at the bottom edge and begin dragging the other app toward either the left or right side of the inner display. Apple’s developer guidance describes this as dragging the app toward the target side until a placement or drop area appears.
  4. Wait for the drop area. Continue moving toward the chosen edge. Do not release while the app is still over the center of the screen; release only when iOS highlights the side region where the app can be placed.
  5. Release to create Split View. Let go when the drop area is visible. iOS places the dragged app on that side and leaves the original app in the other half.
  6. Use the 50/50 arrangement. The standard two-app configuration gives each app an equal half. Tap, type, scroll, or run commands in either region without closing the other.

If the second app snaps back instead of opening beside the first, repeat the gesture with the phone fully open and keep the drag close to the selected edge until the highlighted drop area appears. An app that cannot provide a suitable resizable presentation may also fail to produce a usable placement target.

Switch between apps and return to a saved pair

With two apps visible, swipe up from the bottom to enter the app-switching view. Apple describes the broader iPhone Duo experience as seamless app switching, so this gesture is the normal way to move among current work rather than rebuilding every arrangement from scratch.

MacRumors reports that users can save an app pair for later access. The exact control label or location can depend on the iOS build. After creating the pair, open the app-switching view with the upward swipe and look for the available command to save the current pair. If your version displays a save-pair control, select it and give the pair the requested confirmation or name. Later, choose that saved pair from the same multitasking or app-switching interface rather than dragging both apps again.

If no save option is shown, the pair may still remain in the recent-apps view until iOS or the user removes it. Apple’s public description confirms seamless switching, while the reported save-pair behavior is not documented here as a fixed, universal menu path; do not assume that every iOS 27 release presents identical controls.

How folding and rotating change the layout

Fully open

When iPhone Duo is open, the inner display is the main multitasking surface. The two app regions remain side by side in the 50/50 Split View arrangement, with each half handling its own touch input and content.

Closed

Closing the hinge moves the experience to the 5.4-inch outer display. iOS switches content to the appropriate active display instead of attempting to preserve the open two-column geometry on the narrower panel. The outer screen is therefore a continuation of the session, not a second simultaneous Split View canvas.

Turned sideways

iPhone Duo reorients when you rotate it. Apps resize for the new width and height, and iOS chooses an arrangement that matches the current posture. Developers are advised to respond to regular horizontal and vertical size classes on the inner display rather than relying on rigid interface-orientation checks. For users, that means a correctly adapted app should rearrange its controls as the phone turns, even when the physical orientation changes without a manual reload.

Partly folded

A partially folded phone creates a changing usable area. Apple’s design guidance places controls and interactive elements toward the stable outer edge or the lower half, where they are easier to reach and less likely to sit across the hinge. The active app can resize vertically as the angle changes.

Picture-in-picture video is especially useful in this posture. A video window can be pinned at the top while the active app resizes below it, allowing playback to continue while the lower region becomes the working surface. This behavior depends on the video app exposing picture-in-picture support; Split View alone does not add that capability to an app.

Flipping between displays

When you flip or change the phone’s pose, iOS moves content to the display appropriate for that state. Apps are expected to resize across open, closed, rotated, and folded poses rather than assuming that the inner screen is always available.

Which apps work best in a two-screen setup?

App compatibility is not a simple yes-or-no property. Evaluate each candidate app against four practical questions.

Compatibility question What a positive result provides What a limitation looks like
Does the app support a resizable layout? The app redraws its content when each half becomes wider, narrower, taller, or shorter. Controls may be cramped, clipped, letterboxed, or left in a phone-sized column.
Does it support picture-in-picture? Video can remain in a floating window while another app occupies the working region. Leaving the video app pauses playback or closes its visible player.
Does it expose a sidebar or split navigation in the regular inner-display size class? Lists and detail views can appear together, making the extra width useful for reading and navigation. The app may show only a single narrow navigation stack even though it is technically running.
Does it position controls appropriately near the hinge and outer edge? Buttons and interactive elements stay reachable in open and partly folded poses. Important controls can land near the hinge, in the lower region, or in an awkward orientation.

Apple says existing apps run on iPhone Duo even when they were not built with the iOS 27 SDK. That broad compatibility does not guarantee an ideal design. A current app using the newer SDK can take advantage of the full inner screen, regular horizontal and vertical size classes, and posture-aware placement, while an older app may simply scale its existing phone interface.

Useful dual-screen workflows

Assistant beside an email or document

Apple demonstrates Siri beside Mail. Put the assistant on one side and the message or document on the other so you can ask for help while keeping the source material visible. Because the halves are independent, tapping back into Mail does not replace Siri’s region.

Video above a working app in a partly folded pose

Start a video in an app that supports picture-in-picture, then fold the phone partway. Pin the video at the top and use the vertically resized app below it for notes, messages, or another task. The usefulness comes from two separate capabilities: the phone’s posture-aware resizing and the video app’s own picture-in-picture implementation.

Reference and composition

Place a reference app on one side and a writing or editing app on the other. This arrangement is most comfortable when the reference app provides a sidebar or two-column view at the regular inner-display size class. If the reference app remains a fixed narrow phone layout, rotating the device or choosing a different pair may provide a better result than forcing the split.

Saved recurring pair

For a pair you use repeatedly, create the arrangement once and use the reported save-pair command in the app-switching interface when it is available. A saved pair is useful for recurring combinations such as communication plus calendar or assistant plus mail, but the control is software-version dependent.

StandBy on either display

StandBy can run on either iPhone Duo display even when the phone is not charging. In that mode, the device can act as a clock, widget hub, or photo frame. StandBy is a display mode rather than a two-app Split View pair, so it should be treated as a separate way to use the foldable’s surfaces. When you need active two-app work, open the phone and use Split View; when you want ambient information, select the display and posture that make StandBy easiest to see.

Troubleshoot a failed or awkward split view

The drop area never appears

  • Confirm that the inner 7.6-inch display is active and the phone is not closed.
  • Begin the drag from the home indicator and move decisively toward the left or right edge.
  • Hold the app over the edge until iOS highlights a drop region before releasing.
  • Try a different app. The missing target can indicate that the selected app does not expose a suitable resizable presentation.

The app opens but looks like a narrow phone screen

The app may run without iOS 27 SDK support but not implement a layout designed for the larger inner display. Check whether an update is available and test another app with a sidebar or regular-size-class design. iPhone Duo’s compatibility promise means the app can run; it does not promise that every older interface will fill half the screen elegantly.

Controls are difficult to reach while folded

Change the hinge angle or rotate the phone so the stable outer edge or lower half becomes the control area. Apps designed according to Apple’s posture guidance should move interactive elements away from the hinge, but an older app may leave them in a less convenient position.

Rotation produces an unexpected arrangement

Give the app a moment to resize after turning the phone. iOS uses size classes and the current posture, not just a fixed orientation flag, to determine the presentation. If only one app fails to rearrange, that app’s layout implementation is the likely limitation.

The pair disappears after closing the phone

Closing changes the active surface to the 5.4-inch outer display, so the open two-column geometry cannot be preserved literally. Reopen the phone to return to the inner Split View, or use the app-switching interface to restore the apps. A saved pair, when exposed by your iOS build, is intended to reduce that rebuilding step.

Picture-in-picture is unavailable

Split View does not automatically add picture-in-picture. The video app must support it. Use an app with that capability if you need a floating video window while another app occupies the lower or adjacent region.

StandBy availability Either display, including when the phone is not charging

What to expect in everyday use

The strongest case for iPhone Duo multitasking is continuity across physical states. You can establish a two-app workspace on the open screen, rotate it for a different working shape, fold it to bring controls into a stable lower region, or close it and continue on the outer display. iOS handles the display transition, but the quality of the result still depends on how each app responds to resizing, size classes, picture-in-picture, and the hinge.

Use the 50/50 layout when both apps deserve equal attention. Choose a picture-in-picture workflow when video should remain visible while the working app changes. Prefer apps with sidebars or split navigation when you need to browse a list and inspect details without repeatedly navigating back. If an app behaves poorly near the hinge or remains locked to a narrow phone interface, replacing that app is usually more effective than repeatedly changing the phone’s angle.

For a first setup, the reliable sequence is simple: open the phone, start the primary app, drag the second app from the home indicator to an edge, release at the highlighted drop area, and verify both halves respond independently. After that, the hinge and orientation determine how iOS reshapes the workspace, while app support determines how much of the inner display you can actually use.
