Start with the game’s original console, not the handheld you own. Nintendo DS and DSi games need a DS emulator such as melonDS, while Nintendo 3DS games need a separate 3DS emulator such as Azahar. Install a current build for your operating system, use your own legally created game backups, configure any system files the selected emulator requires, then set both screens and touch controls before testing one title.
1. Identify whether the game is for DS or 3DS
Check the game box, cartridge label, dump folder, or the publisher’s original platform listing. A Nintendo DS or DSi title follows the DS emulation path; a Nintendo 3DS title follows the 3DS path. The two systems have different hardware, firmware expectations, file handling, and emulator projects.
| Original system | Emulator path | Important setup difference |
|---|---|---|
| Nintendo DS or DSi | melonDS or a current port that supports your handheld | The documented melonDS firmware-boot workflow uses DS BIOS and firmware files; DSi emulation adds more system files. |
| Nintendo 3DS | Azahar, an open-source 3DS emulator project based on Citra | Use decrypted personal backups in the formats documented by the current Azahar build. Encrypted game files are unsupported. |
Nintendo states that a 3DS console plays almost all DS and DSi titles. Some exceptions rely on accessories inserted into the DS’s Game Boy Advance slot. That backward-compatibility statement applies to Nintendo hardware, not to third-party emulator compatibility, so do not use it as a guarantee that every DS title will work on your handheld.
2. Prepare the handheld before installing anything
Choose a build for the exact operating system
Use the official melonDS project information for DS software and the official Azahar project instructions for 3DS software. Select the release or package intended for your operating system and processor. Desktop documentation can describe options that are absent from an Android port, and an Android build can expose different menus, input APIs, or performance behavior. Neither project’s desktop documentation guarantees identical controls, interface labels, or speed on every dual-screen handheld.

For Azahar on Android, the project README recommends Google Play for most users and describes alternative installation routes. Check the live README when you install because release channels, package names, and supported Android versions can change. For melonDS, use the current build or port maintained for your device rather than assuming that a desktop package is installable on Android.
Make a simple storage plan
Create separate folders for game backups and emulator data. Use names that are easy to recognize, such as Games/DS, Games/3DS, and an emulator-data folder. The exact absolute path is not important and can vary with Android storage rules; what matters is that the app has permission to read the folders and that you can find them when importing a game.
A removable card is optional. If you use one, verify that the handheld supports its card type and capacity. Internal storage is also valid and can be simpler when an app’s file picker has trouble with removable media.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesKeep ownership and local law in mind
Use game backups you are entitled to make and keep. Do not download commercial game files from file-sharing sites. Azahar’s documentation says that preparing personal 3DS backups requires a 3DS and that legal requirements differ by jurisdiction; it intentionally does not publish a universal dumping guide. Follow the rules where you live and consult the current project documentation for supported backup procedures.
3. Set up DS and DSi games with melonDS
Install the appropriate melonDS build
- Identify whether your handheld runs Android, Windows, Linux, or another supported platform.
- Open the official melonDS project information and select the build or port for that platform.
- Install it using the platform’s normal package process. Avoid copying desktop configuration assumptions to an unofficial handheld port.
- Launch the app once so it can create its initial configuration folders, then close it if you need to copy system files into a known location.
The melonDS FAQ reviewed for this guide documents its desktop configuration. A port may rename menus or store files elsewhere, so use the current FAQ for the version you actually installed.

Provide DS BIOS and firmware files when using the documented firmware workflow
The melonDS FAQ lists these files for its DS-mode firmware-boot setup:
| File | Size listed by the melonDS FAQ | Use |
|---|---|---|
bios9.bin |
4 KB | DS ARM9 BIOS |
bios7.bin |
16 KB | DS ARM7 BIOS |
| Firmware dump | 128 KB, 256 KB, or 512 KB depending on its type | DS firmware used by the documented boot workflow |
These are melonDS-specific requirements for the workflow described in that FAQ, not a universal rule for every DS emulator. Obtain system files from hardware you own and follow the current project’s legal and technical guidance.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Point melonDS to the files
- Open melonDS settings.
- Go to Emu Settings → DS-mode, the path named in the FAQ.
- Set the paths for
bios9.bin,bios7.bin, and the firmware dump. - Save the configuration and restart the emulator if it does not detect the files immediately.
- Try one title before changing advanced options.
The FAQ also supports direct game boot and recommends leaving direct boot enabled when using DSi or 3DS DS-mode firmware. If your port exposes a differently named option, look for the equivalent direct-boot or firmware-boot setting in its current DS-mode configuration.
Understand the additional DSi requirements
DSi emulation can require DSi BIOS files, DSi firmware, and a NAND dump in addition to the DS files above. The exact paths and switches depend on the melonDS version and port. Do not copy a DSi NAND or BIOS from an untrusted download; use the current project instructions and your own hardware-derived files.
4. Set up 3DS games with Azahar
Install Azahar from a current project channel
- Read the current Azahar README and confirm that your handheld’s operating system and architecture are supported.
- On Android, use Google Play if it is available for your device and region; the README identifies it as the recommended route for most users.
- If you use another installation route described by the project, verify the package source and app variant before installing.
- Open Azahar after installation and complete its first-run permission prompts.
Azahar describes itself as “an open-source 3DS emulator project based on Citra.” Its Android interface and performance can differ between releases and devices, so follow the labels shown by your installed build rather than a screenshot from an older guide.

Choose the user-data and game folders
Azahar’s Android setup uses two folder selections. First choose a user-data folder, then choose a game folder. Either location can be on internal storage or an SD card.
- When the first-run picker asks for user data, select or create the emulator-data folder you prepared.
- Grant access through Android’s system file picker. Returning from the picker without confirming access leaves the app unable to read the folder.
- When prompted for the game folder, select the folder containing your 3DS backups.
- Keep the folders stable. Moving them later can make the library appear empty until you select the new location.
Android does not guarantee one fixed filesystem path across devices or app versions. Use the in-app folder picker instead of entering a path copied from another handheld.
Use only supported, decrypted backup formats
Azahar’s documentation lists these supported 3DS-related files:
| Format | Documented use |
|---|---|
.cci or .3ds |
Decrypted 3DS game images |
.cia |
Decrypted installable title packages |
.cxi or NCCH files |
Decrypted title content |
.3dsx |
Homebrew applications |
Encrypted game files are unsupported. If a file has a listed extension but Azahar rejects it, the extension alone does not prove that the content is decrypted or valid. Recreate the backup from your own 3DS using a method allowed in your jurisdiction, then consult the current Azahar documentation for import or installation steps.
5. Configure both screens and touchscreen input
Start with a visible two-screen layout
Open the emulator’s display, layout, or screen settings and choose the arrangement that keeps both screens visible when you need information from each one. A vertical arrangement often mirrors the physical shape of a dual-screen handheld, while a side-by-side arrangement can suit a wide display. The exact menu names and available presets vary by app version and device.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Check that the lower-screen touch area is large enough to use without covering the upper screen. If the handheld has a hardware touchscreen, test it directly; if it uses a controller or external display, identify the emulator’s touch-input method before starting a long game.
Map controls for real play
- Map the handheld’s directional controls and face buttons to the emulator’s digital pad and action buttons.
- Assign shoulder buttons and start/select equivalents if the device does not provide the original layout.
- Test stylus taps, drags, and presses on several parts of the lower screen.
- Keep a practical screen-swap, screen-focus, or one-screen toggle available if the emulator exposes one.
- Save the profile after testing so a later game launch does not revert to an unworkable mapping.
There is no single control label or key combination that applies to every Azahar build, melonDS port, or dual-screen handheld. Look in the current app’s input and display sections for the function you need, then verify the on-screen result.
Choose when one-screen focus is useful
Some games need both screens at once; others place most action on one screen and use the second for maps, menus, or status. Keep the dual-screen view for normal play, but use a focus or swap function when text is too small or when one screen would otherwise be hidden by the handheld’s bezel. Treat one-screen mode as a presentation choice, not a compatibility fix.
6. Test one title before importing your whole library
- Confirm the game appears in the emulator library or open it through the app’s file browser.
- Start the title and check for a missing-file, encryption, or permission error.
- Press every mapped physical button and test the lower-screen touch area.
- Switch layouts or screens once to confirm that the display controls work.
- Create a save inside the game, close the emulator normally, reopen it, and verify that the save remains.
- Only after this sanity check, add more games or adjust performance settings.
This test is a practical setup check, not a universal compatibility benchmark. Results depend on the title, emulator version, handheld hardware, operating-system version, and graphics drivers.

The game does not appear in the library
- Reopen the emulator’s folder picker and confirm that it has access to the exact directory containing the backup.
- Check that the file is in a format supported by that emulator and that the filename was not changed to hide an unsupported type.
- For Azahar, confirm that the backup is decrypted; encrypted files are not supported.
- If you moved an SD card or renamed a folder, select the new location rather than relying on the old path.
melonDS reports a BIOS or firmware problem
- Verify the filenames and sizes against the current melonDS FAQ:
bios9.binis 4 KB,bios7.binis 16 KB, and the firmware dump is 128 KB, 256 KB, or 512 KB depending on type. - Return to Emu Settings → DS-mode and check each path.
- Make sure the files came from your own compatible hardware and are readable by the app.
- If you are using a port, check whether it expects a different configuration directory or supports direct boot without the firmware workflow.
The 3DS file is rejected
Check decryption first. Azahar documents support for decrypted .cci/.3ds, .cia, .cxi/NCCH, and homebrew .3dsx files. A commercial title obtained from an unauthorized source is not a legitimate fix; recreate a personal backup using your own 3DS and the procedures permitted where you live.

Touch input or screen switching does nothing
Open the current build’s input settings, confirm that touch input is enabled, and make sure the touch area is assigned to the lower display rather than a mouse-only or pointer mode. Recheck the physical button assigned to screen swap or focus. Because labels differ between ports, use the function description and observe which display changes.
Performance is poor
There is no minimum hardware specification that applies to every current DS and 3DS emulator, game, and handheld combination. Confirm that you installed a build intended for the device, test with default settings, close unnecessary background apps, and change one graphics or layout option at a time. A title that runs well on one handheld can behave differently on another, so avoid treating another device’s settings as a guarantee.
Saves disappear after closing
Confirm that the emulator has write permission for its user-data folder, especially when that folder is on removable storage. Close the app normally after creating a test save, reopen it, and check the same title. If the folder was moved, restore the original location or select the new user-data directory in the app’s setup.

- Record which emulator build and handheld operating-system version work with each profile.
- Keep DS, 3DS, BIOS, firmware, and emulator-data folders separate so a path change is easy to diagnose.
- Back up save data and emulator configuration before changing storage cards or reinstalling an app.
- Read the current project README or FAQ after major updates; Android permissions, package channels, menu labels, and supported formats can change.
- Do not assume that a firmware file required by melonDS is required by Azahar, or that a 3DS backup format accepted by Azahar is accepted by a DS emulator.
Once one DS title and one 3DS title pass the launch, control, touch, layout, and save checks, repeat the process for additional games. Treat compatibility and performance as properties of the specific game, emulator build, and handheld rather than as permanent guarantees.
