NSD does not create DNSSEC keys or signatures. It is an authoritative-only server that loads and serves a zone file already signed by a separate signer. To deploy DNSSEC, generate and maintain the signed zone outside NSD, point the zonefile setting at that output, validate it with nsd-checkzone, reload NSD, and publish a matching DS record at the parent. The chain is complete only after the parent serves that DS record and independent validating resolvers can build trust to your child DNSKEY.
Understand what NSD does—and what it does not do
NSD is an authoritative DNS server. It answers for zones you configure and can transfer those zones to secondaries, but it is not a complete DNSSEC signing service. Installing NSD alone does not generate keys, sign records, refresh signatures, or perform key rollovers.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteNSD’s operating boundary is simple: when a configured zone contains DNSSEC records, NSD serves them. The NSD manual describes this as: “For NSD, DNSSEC is enabled automatically for zones that are signed.” There is no BIND-style dnssec-enable option to add to nsd.conf.
Your signer or DNS management system must therefore produce and maintain:

- DNSKEY records, including the active key material that validators use.
- RRSIG records covering the records in the zone.
- Authenticated-denial records (the NSEC or NSEC3 data selected by your signing workflow).
- Key timing and rollover state, so keys become active, retire, and are removed safely.
- Signature refreshes before existing signatures expire.
NSD then publishes the resulting signed data. The parent zone publishes a DS record that identifies the active child DNSKEY. That parent DS is what connects your signed child zone to the DNSSEC trust anchor.
Plan the files, signer, and publication roles
Keep unsigned input separate from signed output
Maintain two controlled locations: one for the unsigned source zone and one for the generated signed zone that NSD reads. For example, an organization might keep editable source data under an administration directory and write generated output to /etc/nsd/example.com.signed. The exact paths are local policy; the important property is that an accidental reload cannot point NSD at an unsigned file.
Restrict write access to the signed directory. The account running the signer needs to replace or atomically publish the signed file, while the NSD service account needs read access. Do not allow routine editors to modify generated signatures directly.
Choose who signs
The signer may be a standalone DNSSEC tool or a DNS management system. Before committing to one, document how it handles the operational details NSD does not provide:
| Decision area | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
| Key rollover | Can it perform planned key changes without a validation gap, and does it show the state of each key? |
| Private-key storage | Where are private keys stored, who can read them, and how are backups protected? |
| Signature timing | How far ahead are signatures generated, how often are they refreshed, and what happens if the signer is offline? |
| Parent coordination | Can it produce CDS or CDNSKEY data, or otherwise provide the DS values you must submit to the parent? |
| Source/output separation | Can it publish a signed artifact separately from the unsigned source and preserve an older known-good artifact for rollback? |
| Audit and recovery | Are key changes, serial changes, and failed signing runs logged, and is there a documented restore procedure? |
| Secondary compatibility | Does the generated zone work with your AXFR/IXFR, notification, and TSIG arrangements? |
Build and maintain a valid unsigned zone
Start with a normal authoritative zone. The NSD zone-file guidance states that “A minimal zone needs exactly one SOA (Source Of Authority) and one or more NS (Name Server) records.” Add the service records your domain requires, such as A, AAAA, MX, CNAME, TXT, and related records.

This is an illustrative unsigned source, not a complete production policy. Use fully qualified names where required, keep the SOA owner and NS set correct for the delegation, and increment the SOA serial for every change you intend to publish. Your signer may copy that serial into the generated file or apply its own documented handling; verify the result before loading it.

Check delegation prerequisites
- Every authoritative name server listed at the parent must be configured to serve the zone.
- The zone must contain one SOA and at least one NS record, with no contradictory apex data.
- Glue and address records for in-bailiwick name servers must be coordinated with the parent.
- The signer must be able to see the final unsigned source and write a complete signed artifact, not a partial update.
Generate the signed zone outside NSD
Run the signer against the unsigned source. It should add DNSKEY, RRSIG, and authenticated-denial records while preserving the ordinary records required by the service. The signer also needs to schedule signature refreshes and key transitions continuously; signing once and copying the file is not an operational DNSSEC deployment.
Do not publish a DS record yet. First confirm that the intended DNSKEY is active in the child zone and that NSD will serve that exact key. A DS submitted for a key that is not being served breaks validation once the parent publishes it.
Publish the generated artifact safely
- Write the new signed file to a temporary file in the same filesystem as the final output.
- Run the zone check described below against the temporary file.
- Confirm the SOA serial, DNSKEY set, RRSIG coverage, and authenticated-denial records are the ones you expect.
- Atomically replace the previous signed file only after validation succeeds.
- Retain the previous known-good file until the new version has been served and queried successfully.
This sequence prevents NSD from seeing a half-written file and gives you a direct rollback artifact if the signer or deployment process produces bad data.
Configure the zone in nsd.conf
Add a zone: stanza for each authoritative zone. The name: field is required; zonefile: tells NSD which file to read and, where applicable, write.
zone:
name: example.com
zonefile: /etc/nsd/example.com.signed
Use the path to the generated signed file, not the editable unsigned source. Keep the stanza in the configuration loaded by the running NSD instance, and make sure the NSD service account can traverse every parent directory and read the file.
Do not add dnssec-enable or a BIND-specific signing directive. NSD recognizes DNSSEC data by its presence in the zone file.

Validate the signed file before NSD loads it
Run the NSD checker with the zone name and the exact generated path:
nsd-checkzone example.com /etc/nsd/example.com.signed
nsd-checkzone parses the file, reports errors, and exits nonzero when validation fails. Treat any nonzero result as a deployment stop: do not reload NSD and do not replace the previous known-good artifact.
Review more than the exit status
- Confirm the SOA serial is the publication serial you intended, not an older source value or an unexpected signer-generated value.
- Confirm the expected DNSKEY records are present and that the key whose DS you will submit is active.
- Confirm ordinary records such as NS, MX, A, AAAA, and CNAME entries survived signing.
- Check that RRSIG records cover the record types clients will query and that their validity window extends far enough for your refresh schedule.
- Check that authenticated-denial records are present and consistent with the signer’s chosen mode.
A successful syntax check cannot prove that the parent DS is correct or that every operational timer is safe. Those checks occur after NSD serves the file.
Reload NSD and verify what it serves
Use the local service integration or remote control
Exact service commands vary by operating system and package. Use the reload action supplied by your service manager, or NSD’s control interface when it is enabled. A typical service-manager form is systemctl reload nsd, but some packages use a different unit name or wrapper; follow the command installed on your host.
NSD remote control is disabled by default. If you need it, generate TLS material with:
nsd-control-setup
Enable the remote-control: clause in the NSD configuration and keep control-interface bound to localhost unless remote administration is specifically required. The control channel uses the generated keys and certificates, so protect those files and limit access to administrators.

After changing the configuration or replacing a zone file, use the documented NSD control reload operation for your installed version, then inspect its return status and logs. A reload that returns successfully only means NSD accepted the operation; it does not replace the need for DNS queries.
Query the authoritative server directly
Use a DNS query tool such as dig against each authoritative address, bypassing recursive caches. Replace the address with the server you just reloaded:
dig @192.0.2.53 example.com SOA +dnssec
dig @192.0.2.53 example.com DNSKEY +dnssec
dig @192.0.2.53 www.example.com A +dnssec
Verify that the served SOA serial matches the file you intended to publish, DNSKEY responses contain the active key set, and representative answers include their RRSIG data. Query every authoritative server; one stale secondary can produce intermittent validation failures even when the primary is correct.
Publish the DS record at the parent
Derive the DS value from the active child DNSKEY using your signing workflow, then submit it to the parent operator or registrar through that operator’s DNSSEC interface. The exact form, authentication, and publication timing depend on the parent and are not defined by NSD.
- Confirm the child DNSKEY is active and served by every authoritative server.
- Obtain the DS digest and algorithm values corresponding to that active key.
- Submit the DS to the parent, checking the key tag and digest character-for-character.
- Wait for the parent to publish the DS according to its own update and TTL schedule.
- Test from an independent validating resolver after publication.
During a rollover, keep the old and new keys available for the overlap period required by your signer and parent timing. Removing a child key before its DS is withdrawn, or publishing a DS before the child serves the matching DNSKEY, creates a broken chain of trust.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Configure secondaries, transfers, and notifications separately
DNSSEC records travel with the zone through normal transfers. Transfer policy is still an independent NSD configuration task. For a primary zone, configure notify: and provide-xfr: for each secondary that should receive updates.

Use TSIG keys to authenticate transfers and notifications. Define the same key name and secret on both ends, restrict the allowed secondary addresses, and protect the key material. The NOKEY examples sometimes shown in secondary-zone documentation are for testing; do not use unauthenticated production transfers.
After a signed-zone update, check that each secondary receives the new SOA serial and serves the same DNSKEY and RRSIG data as the primary. If a secondary is configured to serve an older file locally, clients may see inconsistent answers even though the transfer channel is healthy.

Operate DNSSEC as an ongoing process
Signature refresh and expiry
Signatures have finite validity windows. Schedule the signer to refresh them before expiry, and monitor for failed signing runs, stalled timers, or a full filesystem. A zone can pass yesterday’s check and still become invalid when its last usable RRSIG expires.
SOA serial discipline
Every intentional publication needs a serial change that secondaries can recognize. Decide whether the unsigned source controls the serial or whether the signer generates one, document that decision, and ensure the generated file contains the value your transfer and deployment process expects.
Key rollover
Treat rollover as a coordinated sequence: introduce and serve the new DNSKEY, allow it to propagate, publish the corresponding DS at the parent when appropriate, sign with the new key, and remove retired material only after all dependent caches and parent records have aged out. Follow the signer’s timing model rather than improvising deletion dates.
Backups and rollback
Back up unsigned source data, signer metadata, private keys, NSD configuration, TSIG secrets, and at least one recent signed artifact. Test that you can restore a signed zone and reload it without accidentally publishing an unsigned file.
Troubleshoot common failure modes
| Symptom | Likely cause | Action |
|---|---|---|
nsd-checkzone exits nonzero |
Syntax error, duplicate or invalid records, malformed DNSSEC data, or an incomplete generated file. | Read the reported line, fix the signer input or generation step, rerun the check, and keep the previous signed file in service until it passes. |
| NSD serves unsigned answers | The zonefile points to the unsigned source, or the reload did not load the intended path. |
Inspect the active stanza and file permissions, query DNSKEY and a signed record directly, then reload only after correcting the path. |
| DNSKEY is present but validators report insecurity | The parent has no DS, or the DS has not propagated. | Check the parent delegation and wait for its publication schedule; NSD cannot publish the DS for you. |
| Validators report a bogus answer | Parent DS does not match the served DNSKEY, signatures are expired, or different authoritative servers serve different versions. | Compare DS, DNSKEY, RRSIG validity times, and SOA serials from every authoritative server. Correct the signer, parent record, or transfer state before removing any fallback data. |
| Secondaries remain stale | notify:, provide-xfr:, ACLs, TSIG, or serial handling is wrong. |
Review transfer logs and TSIG configuration on both sides, verify the secondary is authorized, and confirm the SOA serial increased. |
| Reload fails after a file replacement | NSD cannot read the path, a directory permission blocks traversal, or the file was replaced while incomplete. | Check ownership and permissions, publish files atomically, run nsd-checkzone, and inspect the service log for the exact path error. |
| Remote control cannot connect | Remote control remains disabled, TLS files are missing, or the interface is not listening where expected. | Run nsd-control-setup if needed, enable remote-control:, verify localhost binding and certificate permissions, then retry locally. |
Production checklist
- NSD is configured only as the authoritative server; a separate signer owns keys, signatures, and rollover timing.
- Unsigned source and generated signed output are in separate, access-controlled paths.
- The zone contains one SOA, one or more NS records, the required service records, and an intentional SOA serial.
- The configured
zonefilepoints to the signed artifact. nsd-checkzonesucceeds before every publication.- DNSKEY, RRSIG, and authenticated-denial records are inspected, not merely assumed to exist.
- NSD is reloaded through the host’s supported service mechanism or secured local remote control.
- SOA, DNSKEY, and representative signed answers are queried directly from every authoritative server.
- The parent DS matches an active child DNSKEY and is confirmed from an independent validating resolver.
- Secondaries use authenticated TSIG transfers and notifications, with serials monitored for convergence.
- Signature refresh, key rollover, parent updates, backups, and rollback have named owners and alerting.
The complete operating model
In a dependable NSD DNSSEC deployment, the signer is the system of record for cryptographic state, NSD is the authoritative publication engine, and the parent is the final link in the trust chain. Keep those responsibilities separate: generate a complete signed zone, validate it, publish it through the configured zonefile, reload NSD, verify every authority, and coordinate DS and rollover changes with the parent. That division avoids the most common misconception—expecting NSD itself to create or maintain DNSSEC—and gives you a repeatable path for routine updates and recovery.
