On an ext4 (or another non-XFS) filesystem, Ubuntu user quotas require four stages: enable a user-quota mount option in /etc/fstab, remount the filesystem, create and enable quota data, and assign limits with setquota. Verify the result with quota and repquota. XFS is different: quota accounting and enforcement are enabled at mount time and quota data is kept inside the filesystem, so you do not create aquota.user files or use quotaon for activation.
What an Ubuntu disk quota controls
A quota limits storage consumption on a particular mounted filesystem. A user quota can restrict the amount of space a user allocates (a block or byte limit) and, independently, the number of filesystem objects the user creates (an inode or file-count limit). Quotas apply to the filesystem where the files are stored, not automatically to every filesystem the user can access.
Two limits can be set for each resource:
- Soft limit: the normal threshold. A filesystem can allow usage above it during the configured grace period.
- Hard limit: the absolute allocation ceiling. Once reached, further blocks or inodes are rejected, subject to filesystem and application behavior.
Quota scope can be per user, per group, and, on filesystems and tools that support it, per project. The procedure below focuses on per-user limits on Ubuntu.
Check the filesystem and mount point first
The quota commands must target the actual mounted filesystem. Do not assume that /home is a separate partition: on many installations it is a directory inside the root filesystem. Run:

findmnt -no FSTYPE,TARGET
Identify the filesystem containing the directory you want to restrict. The output tells you both its type and mount point. Use that mount point consistently in the remaining commands. If users’ home directories are on a separate /home mount, use /home; if they are on the root mount, use the root mount point shown by findmnt.
The filesystem type determines the implementation:
| Filesystem | Quota data and activation | Correct approach |
|---|---|---|
| ext4 and other non-XFS filesystems supported by the quota utilities | External quota files at the filesystem root, such as aquota.user for version-2 user quotas |
Add a user-quota mount option, run quotacheck, then enable with quotaon |
| XFS | Quota information is filesystem metadata and uses journaling for consistency | Enable XFS user accounting and enforcement in the mount options; use XFS quota tooling afterward |
Set up user quotas on ext4 and other non-XFS filesystems
1. Install the quota utilities
Install the package that provides quotacheck, quotaon, setquota, quota, and repquota:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorssudo apt install quota
Use the quota commands supplied by the installed Ubuntu package. Their exact option set can vary with package version, so check the local manual page if an option is rejected.
2. Back up and edit /etc/fstab
Make a copy of the mount configuration before changing it:
sudo cp /etc/fstab /etc/fstab.quota-backup
Open the file:
sudoedit /etc/fstab
Find the entry for the target filesystem and add usrquota to its comma-separated mount options. For example:
UUID=... /home ext4 defaults,usrquota 0 2
Preserve the existing UUID, filesystem type, dump value, and filesystem-check order. Add the option to the entry for the filesystem that actually stores the users’ data; adding it to an unrelated mount will not limit their home directories.

sudo mount -o remount /home
Replace /home with the mount point you identified. If the target is the root filesystem, use its mount point and follow your normal change-control procedure; a reboot may be preferable when a remount is not safe or is refused. Confirm the active options with:
findmnt -no FSTYPE,OPTIONS,TARGET /home
The output should show the user-quota option on the target mount. If it does not, correct /etc/fstab and remount again before running a quota scan.
4. Create or refresh quota data with quotacheck
For a non-XFS filesystem, scan the mounted filesystem and create/check user quota data:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
sudo quotacheck -cum /home
The command in this workflow requests creation or checking of user quota data while scanning the mounted filesystem. Run it when filesystem contents are relatively stable; heavy concurrent writes can make the scan’s accounting immediately stale or produce avoidable inconsistencies. Follow the option syntax supported by the quota package installed on the host.
Version-2 user quota data is normally stored at the filesystem root in a file named aquota.user. Do not create that file manually on XFS. If the scan reports that the filesystem is not quota-enabled, stop and troubleshoot the mount options instead of repeatedly rerunning the scan.
5. Enable user quotas
Activate and report user quotas for the selected filesystem:
sudo quotaon -v /home
The verbose output should indicate that user quotas were enabled. Check the state explicitly:

sudo quotaon -p /home
For an administrator-wide view of enabled filesystems, use:
sudo quotaon -av
6. Assign a user’s limits
setquota accepts the user, block soft limit, block hard limit, inode soft limit, inode hard limit, and filesystem. This example assigns limits to user alice on /home:
sudo setquota -u alice 1048576 1258291 0 0 /home
The two first numeric values are the block soft and hard limits. The two zero values leave inode limits unset in this example. Select values that match your policy and the units expected by the installed quota tools; do not copy the example numbers blindly. To enforce a file-count limit as well, replace the inode zeros with the desired soft and hard limits.
Set limits only after quota accounting is active. Otherwise, a successful-looking command can leave you with a configuration that is not enforced on the mounted filesystem.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →7. Verify the result for the user and filesystem
Inspect one user’s usage and limits:
sudo quota -u alice
The quota command displays the user’s disk usage and limits for the filesystems where quotas are available. For an administrator-oriented report covering the filesystem, run:
sudo repquota -u /home
Check all of the following before handing the system to users:
- The expected mount point appears in
quotaoutput. - The configured soft and hard values are shown for
alice. - Current usage is plausible compared with an independent filesystem listing.
quotaon -p /homereports user quotas enabled.- A controlled test confirms that approaching the hard limit produces the expected allocation error, without risking production data.
Choose block and inode limits deliberately
Space limits and file-count limits solve different problems. A user can consume a large amount of capacity with a few large files, or exhaust available inodes with millions of tiny files while using relatively few bytes. Consider both resources when the workload is not known.

| Resource | Protects against | Typical policy question |
|---|---|---|
| Blocks (space) | Disk capacity consumed by file contents and filesystem allocations | How much storage may this user occupy? |
| Inodes (file count) | Directory and metadata exhaustion caused by very many files | How many files, directories, links, or other objects may this user create? |
A soft limit below a hard limit gives users warning and time to remove data or request an increase. A hard limit prevents growth beyond the ceiling. If you set a soft limit but no grace policy is configured, behavior above that threshold depends on the filesystem’s quota configuration; document the local policy and observe it with quota.
Group and project scope
The quota system can also represent limits for a group and, where supported, a project. Group quotas are useful when several accounts share a departmental allocation. Project quotas are useful for a tree of data that should be limited independently of its owning users, but their availability and commands depend on the filesystem and Ubuntu tooling.
Use the corresponding setquota mode and verify with the matching reporting mode only after confirming that the target filesystem supports that scope. A user quota does not automatically become a group or project quota, and changing ownership does not transfer already-accounted usage in the way a storage administrator might expect.
XFS: enable quotas at mount time
XFS is a special case. It stores quota information as filesystem metadata and uses journaling to provide a higher consistency guarantee. The external quota-file workflow for ext4 is therefore the wrong procedure.
Enable accounting and enforcement in the mount configuration
Edit the XFS entry in /etc/fstab and add the XFS user-quota mount option required by your Ubuntu release and local XFS tooling. The option must enable both user accounting and limit enforcement. Apply it with a remount when supported or reboot according to the host’s maintenance policy.
Because XFS enables quotas through mount or /etc/fstab, do not try to activate it with quotaon, and do not create aquota.user files at the filesystem root.
Use XFS quota tools after activation
Once the mount reports XFS user-quota accounting as active, use the documented XFS quota format and XFS quota tooling to set and report user limits. Confirm the active mount options and consult the installed XFS tool’s manual for the exact command syntax before applying limits. The generic quotacheck scan is not the initialization step for XFS.

Troubleshoot “filesystem is not quota-enabled”
The mount option is missing
Run:
findmnt -no FSTYPE,OPTIONS,TARGET /home
If the active options do not include the user-quota option, inspect the matching /etc/fstab line, correct the comma-separated options, and remount. Editing /etc/fstab alone does not change an already-mounted filesystem.
You targeted the wrong mount point
A path such as /home/alice may be inside a filesystem mounted at / or /home. Use findmnt to identify the mount that owns the data, then pass that mount point to quotacheck, quotaon, setquota, and repquota.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The filesystem is XFS
If findmnt reports XFS, stop using the external-file workflow. Enable XFS accounting and enforcement through the mount configuration, then use XFS quota tooling. Running quotacheck against XFS will not convert it into a non-XFS quota setup.
Quota files are absent on a non-XFS filesystem
For version-2 user quotas, the expected file is aquota.user at the filesystem root. Recheck that the filesystem is mounted with user quotas, then run the supported quotacheck command as root. Do not place the file in a user’s home directory.
Quotas appear enabled but limits do not change
- Confirm the command used the same mount point shown by
findmnt. - Run
quotaon -p MOUNTPOINTand verify that user quotas, not only another quota class, are enabled. - Re-read the user’s values with
quota -u USERand the filesystem report withrepquota -u MOUNTPOINT. - Check whether the test writes data to a different mounted filesystem; a quota on
/homecannot limit a separate mount under a user’s directory. - Re-run the accounting scan during a quiet maintenance window if usage was changing while
quotacheckran.
Operate quotas safely
Record the policy
Document which filesystem is limited, whether the policy is per user or group, the block and inode values, and how soft-limit grace is handled. Keep the policy with the system’s change records so a later administrator can distinguish an intentional limit from an accounting error.
Monitor before users hit hard limits
Schedule administrative checks of repquota and alert on users approaching their soft or hard limits. A report is more useful when it includes the mount point and date of collection, because the same username can have different usage on different filesystems.
Recommended Free Tools
Change or remove a limit
Use setquota again with the revised values, then verify with quota -u USER. To remove a class of limit, use the zero values supported by the installed quota utility, but confirm the resulting report; removing a limit does not delete data already stored.
Disable quotas only after planning the transition
Before removing a quota option from /etc/fstab, decide whether existing quota data must be retained for reporting. Stop enforcement using the appropriate tool for the filesystem, update the mount configuration, and remount or reboot. For XFS, use its mount-time configuration rather than non-XFS quota-file commands.
A complete ext4 example
The following sequence assumes that /home is an ext4 filesystem and that the account to limit is alice:
- Install the tools with
sudo apt install quota. - Confirm the type and mount with
findmnt -no FSTYPE,TARGET. - Back up
/etc/fstab, then addusrquotato the/homeentry. - Apply the option with
sudo mount -o remount /home. - Create or refresh user accounting with
sudo quotacheck -cum /homeduring a low-write period. - Enable and inspect quotas with
sudo quotaon -v /homeandsudo quotaon -p /home. - Assign the policy with
sudo setquota -u alice 1048576 1258291 0 0 /home, replacing the example values with your approved limits. - Verify with
sudo quota -u aliceandsudo repquota -u /home.
If any step reports that quotas are unavailable, return to the filesystem type and active mount-option checks. The fix is normally at that layer, not in the user’s account or home-directory permissions.
