In Manager Career, open Squad > Tactical Preset to begin. Choose a preset or create a custom tactic, select a formation, set the team’s Build-Up Style and Defensive Approach, then assign every player a role and focus. Save and activate the tactic before testing it in a match. Menus vary by mode and interface, so the Career Mode path is not a universal route for every version or platform.
Where to find custom tactics in FC 26
The documented Career Mode entry point is the main Career menu’s Squad tab, followed by Tactical Preset. That screen is where you can select, edit, activate, rename, duplicate, delete and save tactics. Other modes can organize squad and tactics controls differently, so do not assume the Career Mode path will appear unchanged in Ultimate Team, Kick-Off or another mode.
FC 26 uses the FC IQ system rather than the older FIFA-style instruction terminology. A tactic has two connected layers:

- Player assignments: each position’s Role and Focus, which describe the player’s job inside the formation and team plan.
Changing only one layer can leave the shape unbalanced. A high-risk team approach paired with conservative individual assignments may produce a different result from the one you intended, while an attacking role in a formation that does not provide cover can expose the same side to counters.

Build a tactic from a preset or from scratch
Use a preset as a starting point
Presets are preconfigured tactical bases. They are useful when you are learning FC IQ or want a coherent starting shape instead of choosing every setting independently. In Career Mode, EA lists FC Preset, Direct Play, Cautious and Custom as available choices.

When you edit a preset setting, Career Mode converts that setup into a Custom Preset. That label does not mean the tactic is wrong; it simply indicates that you have moved away from the untouched preset.
Check compatibility before making extensive edits
EA describes presets as compatible with their available formations, while custom presets can encounter incompatibilities after several changes. If the game reports a mismatch, return to the formation and role choices you changed most recently, or start from a compatible preset and make fewer edits at a time. This makes it easier to identify which combination the interface will not accept.
Choose the formation before assigning instructions
Formation is not just a visual arrangement on the tactics screen. EA’s FC IQ explanation says the formation establishes how the team lines up and defends without the ball, and it affects which positions and roles are available. Choose a shape that your squad can actually fill rather than copying a tactic designed for different players.

Evaluate a formation with six questions
| Dimension | Question to ask |

| Attack | How many players can support the ball and arrive in useful areas? |
| Defence | Does the out-of-possession shape protect the spaces you usually concede? |
| Build-Up | Are there safe passing options when opponents press? |
| Width | Who holds the flanks, and who covers them when those players move? |
| Length | Does the team stay connected, or are the lines likely to separate? |
| Endurance | Can the players maintain the intended movement and pressure for the match? |
These six dimensions are also useful when reviewing FC 26’s tactical breakdown. A formation can look attractive in possession but still be unsuitable if its defensive shape leaves no cover, if its roles demand movement your players cannot sustain, or if it does not offer a reliable outlet against pressure.
Set the team’s Build-Up Style and Defensive Approach
Build-Up Style controls the team’s attacking priority
Build-Up Style sets the priority and tempo for moving forward. Treat it as a team-level instruction: it influences the context in which individual roles operate, but it does not replace those roles. For example, a forward-looking build-up still needs players assigned to receive, connect play and provide width in the chosen formation.
Start with the style that matches how you want to progress the ball, then check whether the resulting spacing gives the ball carrier more than one safe option. If the team advances too slowly for your preference, adjust the build-up setting or use roles that offer earlier forward movement. If possession breaks down immediately, the issue may be a missing support role rather than the build-up label alone.
Defensive Approach sets risk, pressure and tracking behavior
Defensive Approach combines the team’s line height or depth with pressure behavior and run tracking. EA’s FC 25 FC IQ documentation describes four labels that may help explain the concepts:

Those exact mechanics and labels are version-sensitive. Verify the wording shown in your FC 26 interface before relying on a specific setting or assuming that a numerical line-height recommendation from an older guide still applies. The important decision is the risk profile: how high you defend, how much pressure you apply and how much energy the approach consumes.
Assign player Roles and Focuses
After selecting the formation and team approach, assign each player a Role and Focus that serve a clear purpose in the shape. Think in terms of jobs rather than isolated ratings: who starts attacks, who protects a flank, who connects midfield, who runs beyond the ball and who stays available as a safe outlet.
FC 26 roles added in the current system
FC 26 adds four player roles: Ball-Playing Keeper, Wide Back, Inverted Wingback and Box Crasher. Their usefulness depends on the formation, the player selected and the behavior you want around them; none is an automatic best choice.

Use Focus to tune the role
FC 26 introduces a Versatile Focus and makes roles less restrictive. EA also describes additional positions and role familiarity, plus a reduced penalty for being out of position. Versatile can loosen the behavior of a role when you need a player to contribute across more than one phase, but flexibility is not the same as identical performance in every assignment.

Choose the Focus by asking what the player should prioritize inside the role. If a player must hold position and protect a teammate’s movement, select a focus that supports that responsibility. If the player is the intended forward outlet or late runner, choose a focus that reinforces those actions. Then look at the neighboring assignments: one aggressive role often needs a cover or connection role nearby.
Match role choice to the actual player
Role familiarity and squad suitability matter more than a tactic’s popularity. A technically capable player may execute a possession-supporting role well, while another with different strengths may be better used as a runner or defensive cover. FC 26’s more flexible system lets you experiment, but it does not make every player-role combination equally effective.
Do not treat the reduced out-of-position penalty as permission to ignore positions. It makes experimentation less punishing, yet a player still has to perform the movement and defensive work your shape requires. When a role creates repeated gaps, change the assignment or the surrounding cover before blaming the entire tactic.

How Career Mode Tactical Vision affects roles
FC 26 Career Mode no longer makes Player Roles requirements for Tactical Visions. You can customize the tactical setup around your specific team and preference instead of being blocked by a role requirement.

Familiarity can still provide a boost. EA’s example is a Possession striker who can use either False 9 or Poacher, with the familiar role receiving the boost. The change creates more freedom, not a guarantee that every permitted role will perform equally. When choosing between two valid assignments, prefer the one that fits the player’s familiarity and the movement your attack needs.

- Open the tactics screen. In Manager Career, go to the Career menu’s Squad tab and select Tactical Preset. In another mode, locate its squad or tactics-management screen instead of assuming this exact route.
- Select a starting point. Choose FC Preset, Direct Play, Cautious or Custom. Use a preset when you want a coherent base; use Custom when you already know the shape and behavior you want.
- Choose the formation. Confirm that it supplies the positions your squad can fill and that its out-of-possession shape matches the spaces you want to protect.
- Set Build-Up Style. Select the team priority and tempo that fit your preferred progression. Check whether players offer short support and forward options rather than judging the label in isolation.
- Set Defensive Approach. Decide how much line height, pressure and run tracking risk you can sustain. Be especially cautious with high-pressure approaches if stamina is already a weakness.
- Assign Roles. Give every position a job in the team’s attack, defence and transitions. Use the FC 26 additions where they solve a real shape problem, not simply because they are new.
- Choose Focuses. Tune each role toward its intended priority. Consider Versatile when a player must perform a broader brief, while still checking the resulting spacing.
- Review the six dimensions. Inspect Attack, Defence, Build-Up, Width, Length and Endurance. A strong rating in one area does not compensate for a shape that fails in another.
- Save and activate. Use the tactics controls to save the setup, give it a recognizable name and activate it. Keep a separate version before making major changes so you can return to a known shape.
- Test, then change one variable. Play enough football to identify a repeatable issue, such as an unprotected flank or no forward outlet. Change the most likely role, Focus or team setting, then test again instead of changing the whole tactic at once.
How to test and adjust a tactic
Observe transitions, not only possession
A tactic can look good while you have the ball and still fail immediately after losing it. Watch the first few seconds after turnovers: identify who presses, who covers the center, who protects the wide channel and whether the defensive line has time to recover. If the same space opens repeatedly, the problem is likely structural rather than a single missed tackle.
Separate team-level and player-level problems
- If the entire side advances too cautiously or too quickly, review Build-Up Style.
- If the whole defensive block sits too deep, pushes too high or tires early, review Defensive Approach.
- If one lane is repeatedly empty, inspect the relevant Role, Focus and neighboring cover.
- If a player receives in the wrong areas, verify that the selected role is available for the formation and suits that player.
- If the shape works briefly and collapses late, compare the pressure demand with the squad’s Endurance.
Use a controlled testing loop
- Write down the exact symptom, such as “left side is exposed after the wingback advances.”
- Identify the smallest setting likely to cause it.
- Change only that setting and save a new version.
- Test against the same type of opponent or match situation when possible.
- Keep the change only if it improves the symptom without creating a larger weakness elsewhere.
There is no independently established best formation or universal role combination. Treat examples and recommendations as starting points, then adjust them to your mode, squad and preferred way to attack and defend.

FC 26 supports creating, editing, activating, renaming, duplicating and deleting tactics. Its FC IQ system also supports Tactics Codes. EA states that you can save up to 10 codes to your profile, with save and load actions available from the My Tactics screen.
FC 25 codes are compatible with FC 26 and are converted when applied. If a converted tactic does not behave exactly as expected, review the resulting formation, team settings and player assignments rather than assuming the imported code preserved every behavior unchanged.
Keep codes organized
- Reserve one code for your stable default tactic.
- Use descriptive names for alternatives built around different risk levels or match situations.
- Save a copy before experimenting with a new formation or unfamiliar role.
- After loading a code, verify the active tactic and starting assignments before a competitive match.
Troubleshoot common setup problems

What a good custom tactic should achieve
A useful tactic is internally consistent. The formation supplies the defensive shape; Build-Up Style gives the team a recognizable way to move forward; Defensive Approach establishes an acceptable risk level; and Roles and Focuses divide the work among the players actually in your squad. If those layers point in different directions, the game may still let you save the tactic, but the on-pitch behavior will be harder to control.
Start with one clear idea, make the smallest changes needed to express it, and use FC 26’s added role flexibility to fit the tactic to your players rather than forcing players into a copied setup. Save stable versions and compare alternatives by risk, progression speed, width, coverage, familiarity, stamina demand and the shape you see after possession changes.
