Final Fantasy VII Remake does not have a documented co-op setup. Square Enix’s published material describes one player issuing commands to AI-controlled party members, but it provides no procedure for adding a second player, assigning an ally to another controller, or enabling split-screen or online multiplayer. You can configure controllers, keyboard bindings, and party-command shortcuts for solo play; a second controller should not be expected to take over Cloud, Tifa, Barret, or another party member.
This guide explains the supported control options, the exact menu paths documented for PC, how ally commands work in combat, and what an unofficial PC modification can and cannot change.
Does Final Fantasy VII Remake support two-player co-op?
The documented answer is no setup is provided for it. The official game-system descriptions explain how a single player controls the active character and directs the other members of the party. They do not describe local co-op, online co-op, a second-player profile, or a way to bind a second controller to an ally.

That distinction matters because the game can look multiplayer-like during combat. You can open a command menu for an ally, select an ability, and have that character execute it. The ally remains AI-controlled: the command comes from the same player who controls the active character. Issuing a command to an AI ally is not equivalent to handing that character to another person.

The official material located for the game contains no second-player procedure. That is a statement about the documented features, not proof that every unofficial experiment has failed. A community modification may alter input behavior on PC, but it should not be treated as an official co-op mode or as evidence that the game supports two simultaneous players.
What “party controls” mean in the game
Active-character control
During normal play, one character is directly controlled at a time. You move, attack, guard, dodge, and use abilities with that character. Other party members act through the game’s AI unless you issue a command to them.
Ally command menus
Square Enix’s system description says that L2 and R2 open the command menus for allies. From those menus, the player can choose an available ability or action for the selected party member. The ally then performs the order under the game’s normal AI and combat rules.

Wait Mode and command shortcuts
Opening the command menu slows time in Wait Mode, giving one player time to choose an action. The game also lets you assign command shortcuts to buttons. Shortcuts reduce menu navigation, but they remain single-player commands: they do not create a separate input channel for another person.
Controller compatibility on PC
For the PC release, Square Enix states: “As well as mouse and keyboard, FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE supports XInput and DirectInput compliant controllers.” The examples named by Square Enix are Xbox One, Xbox Series X, PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5 controllers.
This guidance applies to the PC version and should not be automatically extended to console editions. A controller may be electrically compatible with Windows yet still need the correct driver, USB connection, Bluetooth pairing, or Steam configuration before the game recognizes it.

Set up a controller for the PC version
1. Connect one controller before launching the game
Attach the controller by USB or pair it through your operating system before starting Final Fantasy VII Remake INTERGRADE. A wired connection is useful for diagnosis because it removes Bluetooth pairing and battery variables. If Windows does not see the device, the game cannot use it regardless of the in-game settings.

A pinned developer announcement dated June 30, 2022 says DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 vibration functions are supported when Steam Input is deactivated in Steam’s controller settings. To follow that guidance, open the game’s controller properties in Steam, find the per-game Steam Input setting, and disable Steam Input for the game. Restart the game after changing the setting.
This is the stated setup guidance, not a guarantee for every current driver, firmware version, Bluetooth adapter, or third-party remapping utility. If disabling Steam Input makes the controller stop responding, restore the previous setting and test the connection in wired mode before changing more variables.
3. Confirm that the game receives the device
Launch the game with the controller connected and move through a menu. If the game responds, test movement, camera control, one attack, and one menu command. Do not use the presence of a second connected controller as evidence of co-op; the documented game behavior still provides only one player-controlled character.
4. Keep only one remapping layer while troubleshooting
Steam Input, manufacturer utilities, operating-system accessibility layers, and third-party remappers can all translate buttons. Running several layers at once can produce duplicate presses, wrong prompts, or missing vibration. For a clean test, use the game’s own layout first, then add one external layer only if a specific device requires it.
Remap controller buttons in the game
Square Enix’s support instructions give this path: System > Controller Layout > Custom. Open that menu, select the action you want to change, and assign the replacement input shown by the game.

- Haptic feedback - Feel physically responsive feedback to your in-game actions with dual actuators which replace traditional rumble motors. In your hands, these dynamic vibrations can simulate the feeling of everything from environments to the recoil of different weapons. .Operating temperature : 41 °F to 95 °F (5 °C to 35 °C)
- Adaptive triggers - Experience varying levels of force and tension as you interact with your in-game gear and environments. From pulling back an increasingly tight bowstring to hitting the brakes on a speeding car, feel physically connected to your on-screen actions.
- Built-in microphone and headset jack - Chat with friends online using the built-in microphone or by connecting a headset to the 3.5mm jack. Easily switch voice capture on and off at a moment’s notice with the dedicated mute button. Internet and account for PlayStation Network required.
- DualSense Controller PS5 and PC compatible. Not compatible with PS4.
- PS Remote Play requires Remote Play App connected to Wi-Fi, PS4 or PS5 console with the latest system software and compatible game. A PS4 or PS5 console with a wired connection via a LAN cable is recommended. Version 4.0 of the Remote Play App on iOS and iPadOS or version 4.1 on macOS is required for games to be playable with the controller over Bluetooth.
Some inputs cannot be changed. If an action does not offer a selectable replacement, that is a game limitation rather than a failed save. The available labels can vary by platform or edition, so use the controls displayed on your installation instead of relying on a generic button chart.
A practical remapping order
- Keep movement and camera functions familiar. Change only the actions that cause a physical or accessibility problem first.
- Place frequently used commands where your thumb can reach them. Combat shortcuts are most useful when they do not require you to release movement or camera control.
- Test in a safe encounter. Verify attack, guard, dodge, command-menu access, and character switching before entering a difficult fight.
- Record fixed inputs. If the menu refuses to change an action, leave it in the documented default and adapt the surrounding layout.
Configure keyboard and mouse keybinds
Square Enix support says that some actions can be rebound through the in-game Options menu, while others cannot be changed. Open Options from the game’s menu and review the keyboard and mouse section available on your installation. The support material does not establish a universal list of every rebindable action, so the controls shown in your copy are the authoritative list.
How to test a keyboard layout
- Open the Options menu and change one binding at a time.
- Choose a key that is not already used for another essential action.
- Apply or save the change, then return to gameplay.
- Test the new key in movement, combat, and a menu before changing another binding.
- If the game rejects the key, try a different key and check whether the original action is one of the fixed bindings.
Keyboard customization can make a solo setup more comfortable, but it does not add a second player. A second keyboard or mouse is not documented as an additional character input.

1. Enter a fight with the intended leader active
The character you are directly controlling is the active party member. Other available characters continue operating through the game’s AI.
2. Open the command menu
In Wait Mode, opening the command menu slows time. This gives you a window to select an ability without requiring real-time menu navigation while enemies continue at full speed.
3. Choose the ally menu
Use L2 or R2 to open the command menu for an ally, as described by Square Enix. Select the desired ability and confirm it. The AI-controlled character then attempts to execute that order under the normal combat rules.

4. Use shortcuts where appropriate
Assigning command shortcuts to buttons lets you trigger commonly used abilities faster. Shortcuts are especially useful when you need to return quickly to movement or defense, but every shortcut is still activated by the one player at the controls.
5. Switch the active character when the battle requires it
Changing the active party member changes which character you control directly; it does not transfer that character to another person. The other party members remain AI-controlled until you actively select one and issue commands.
Why a second controller does not behave like co-op
Connecting two controllers can create confusing results. The operating system or Steam may display both devices, yet the game can still read only one as the player’s active input. If both devices appear to affect the same character, they are sharing one input stream rather than controlling separate party members. If the second device does nothing, that is consistent with the absence of a documented second-player assignment.
There is also no documented menu for creating player-two controls, selecting an ally as player two, or synchronizing two local profiles. Avoid interpreting a temporary button response, menu highlight, or remapped input as proof of multiplayer support.
Unofficial PC modification: Improved Keyboard and Mouse Controls
A Nexus Mods listing named Improved Keyboard and Mouse Controls describes extra keyboard-and-mouse options. Among the listed changes are additional keybind choices and keys for switching the selected party leader in combat, along with map and minigame adjustments.

What the modification may help with
- More keyboard-and-mouse binding choices than the standard menu exposes.
- A keyboard command for switching the selected party leader in combat.
- Input changes affecting certain map and minigame interactions.
What it does not establish
- It does not document local or online co-op.
- It does not assign an ally to a second controller.
- It does not turn AI commands into independent human control.
- It does not receive the same support or compatibility guarantees as the unmodified game.
If you experiment with the modification, back up your saves, follow the loader’s installation requirements exactly, and remove the mod before reporting a problem with the unmodified game. Game updates can break a DLL-based mod, and a loader conflict can look like a controller failure.

Troubleshooting common control problems
The controller is not detected
- Confirm that the operating system detects the controller before launching the game.
- Try a direct USB connection to rule out Bluetooth pairing or battery problems.
- On Steam, test the game with one input translation layer at a time.
- Check whether another application has captured the controller.
- Restart the game after changing Steam Input or driver settings.
PlayStation buttons work but vibration does not
For DualSense and DUALSHOCK 4 on Steam, the June 30, 2022 developer guidance says to deactivate Steam Input. Apply that setting, restart the game, and test again. If vibration remains unavailable, the cause may be the connection method, driver, firmware, or another remapping layer; the announcement does not guarantee every present-day configuration.
The custom layout will not accept a button
Some inputs are intentionally unavailable for remapping. Check another action to confirm that the menu itself is working. If only one action refuses a new assignment, treat it as a fixed binding rather than a controller defect.
The ally does not perform the command I selected
Remember that ally commands are requests handled by the game’s AI. The character may be unable to use the ability because of resource, cooldown, range, status, targeting, or combat-state restrictions. This behavior does not indicate that a second controller has taken control.
The mod stops working after an update
Disable the modification and its loader, then launch the unmodified game. Check the mod listing for a version-specific update before reinstalling. Do not assume that a previously working DLL remains compatible after a game executable change.
Platform and edition boundaries
The controller compatibility statement cited here is specifically for FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE INTERGRADE on PC. The documented remapping path and the controller behavior described by the game should not be treated as a promise that every label, vibration feature, or menu location is identical on PlayStation hardware. Console versions also do not gain co-op merely because a second controller is connected.
An unrelated Square Enix FAQ about a “2 Player mode” does not identify Final Fantasy VII Remake and cannot be used to establish a two-player mode in Remake. Make decisions from Remake-specific menus and documentation only.

What you can set up today
- One PC controller: use an XInput or DirectInput-compliant device, including the Xbox and PlayStation examples named by Square Enix.
- Custom controller layout: open System > Controller Layout > Custom and change the inputs the game exposes.
- Keyboard and mouse: open Options and rebind the actions that are editable in your installation.
- Combat commands: use Wait Mode, command shortcuts, and L2/R2 ally menus to direct AI-controlled party members.
- Unofficial extensions: consider a PC mod only as a third-party input experiment, with a Native Mod Loader, DLL installation, backups, and compatibility checks.
None of these steps creates a documented second-player slot. The reliable expectation is a configurable single-player control scheme in which one player directly controls the active character and commands the rest of the party.
