You cannot set up cooperative story play in BioShock, BioShock 2, BioShock Infinite, or BioShock: The Collection. The campaigns are designed for one player. The original release of BioShock 2 did include a separate multiplayer mode, but it is competitive combat rather than two-player progression through the story, and current matchmaking availability depends on the platform and edition.
What “co-op” means in BioShock
When players ask how to play BioShock co-op, they usually mean joining a friend’s story, sharing a campaign, or having two players advance through Rapture or Columbia together. None of the cited BioShock campaigns provides that feature. There is no supported campaign lobby, invite flow, split-screen story mode, or online save progression to enable.
That answer is different from asking whether any BioShock title ever had multiplayer. BioShock 2’s original release had a standalone multiplayer component. It was launched separately from single-player and built around combat and matchmaking, not cooperative missions. Treating that mode as “co-op” creates the most common misunderstanding.
BioShock game and edition compatibility
| Game or edition | Story campaign | Separate multiplayer | What that means for co-op |
|---|---|---|---|
| BioShock | Single-player | No multiplayer described | No campaign co-op setup exists |
| BioShock 2, original release | Single-player | Separate multiplayer combat and matchmaking | Multiplayer is not cooperative story play |
| BioShock Infinite | Single-player | No multiplayer | No campaign co-op setup exists |
| BioShock: The Collection on PlayStation | Official listing describes included single-player content | Co-op is not listed | Buying the collection does not provide a supported co-op campaign |
| BioShock: The Collection on Epic Games Store | Official compilation description focuses on single-player games and add-on content | Co-op is not listed | Do not treat the collection as a way to restore BioShock 2’s original multiplayer |
The original game’s lack of multiplayer was reported at the time by GameSpot. A later report on BioShock Infinite likewise records that it would not include multiplayer. For the remastered compilation, compare the current platform descriptions from the PlayStation Store and Epic Games Store: neither listing advertises a cooperative campaign.

Original BioShock
The first BioShock is a solo story game. Its progression, saves, encounters, and narrative choices are built around one player. There is no in-game route to create a party, invite another player, or convert the campaign into a two-player session. A friend can watch or take turns on the same device, but that is informal shared play rather than a supported multiplayer mode.
BioShock 2
BioShock 2 is the exception only in the narrow sense that its original release shipped with a separate multiplayer mode. The PC manual describes leaving the single-player experience and launching Multiplayer as a different activity. That separation is important: the multiplayer session does not load the campaign, carry a story save, or let a second player accompany the protagonist through the single-player levels.
2K’s contemporary announcement, “First Details of the BioShock 2 Multiplayer Experience”, describes combat across Rapture locations with matchmaking. The description does not present cooperative campaign progression. In practical terms, a BioShock 2 multiplayer match and a BioShock 2 story playthrough are separate modes with different purposes.

BioShock Infinite
BioShock Infinite is another single-player campaign. Reports from its release period specifically clarified that multiplayer would not be included. There is therefore no supported way to invite a friend into Booker and Elizabeth’s campaign, either online or through a built-in split-screen option.
BioShock: The Collection
The Collection bundles remastered BioShock games and associated single-player content. Its official store descriptions emphasize the included campaigns and single-player add-ons. They do not promise co-op, and they should not be read as a re-release of every feature from every original edition.
In particular, purchasing the Collection is not a documented method for obtaining BioShock 2’s original multiplayer. Check the exact store page and platform edition before buying if multiplayer is your requirement. A compilation can preserve story content while omitting or changing a legacy online service.

How to check your copy before trying to set up co-op
Use this sequence to avoid spending time looking for an invite button that the game does not have.
- Identify the title. Confirm whether the installed game is BioShock, BioShock 2, BioShock Infinite, or the Collection. “BioShock” in a library is not enough information because BioShock 2’s original release is the only one in this group associated with a separate multiplayer mode.
- Identify the edition. Record whether you own the original BioShock 2 release or a remastered/collection edition. Do not assume that a remaster contains every menu or online feature from the original.
- Identify the platform. PC, PlayStation, Xbox, and other platform editions can differ in menus, distribution, and service support. Legacy matchmaking should never be assumed to work merely because an old manual mentions it.
- Read the platform’s included-content description. Look for explicit wording about multiplayer or online play. If the listing only describes single-player campaigns and add-ons, it is not evidence of co-op.
- Launch the game’s main menu. A campaign menu with no Multiplayer entry is behaving as expected for the single-player games and collection listings described above. There is no hidden controller combination that turns it into co-op.
- Decide whether your goal is story progression or a match. If the goal is to advance through missions together, stop: these games do not provide that path. If the goal is to try BioShock 2’s historical multiplayer, continue only if your particular edition visibly includes that mode.
If your original BioShock 2 copy has a Multiplayer entry
The manual’s distinction gives the correct mental model: leave the single-player experience and launch Multiplayer. In an edition that still exposes that mode, select the separate Multiplayer option from the game’s menus rather than loading a campaign save and looking for an invite command.
What happens next depends on the copy and platform. The historical mode used matchmaking and combat across Rapture locations, but the available sources do not establish whether legacy matchmaking currently works on every platform. They also do not establish identical menus, server status, account requirements, or regional availability. Do not interpret an unavailable match as a missing co-op setting; the mode may simply be unsupported, delisted, or inaccessible on that edition.

What this mode can do
- Place players in a separate BioShock 2 multiplayer environment rather than in the story campaign.
- Use combat-oriented matches associated with Rapture locations.
- Use matchmaking as described in 2K’s original multiplayer announcement.
What this mode cannot do
- Let two players advance through BioShock 2’s single-player missions together.
- Join a friend to the same campaign save or share campaign checkpoints.
- Turn the Collection’s single-player listings into a cooperative mode.
- Prove that online services are still operating on a particular platform today.
Why common “BioShock co-op setup” instructions fail
Looking for an invite button in the campaign
Campaign menus do not expose a supported invite flow because the story is single-player. Reinstalling, changing controller assignments, or opening a platform overlay cannot add a game mode that the software does not provide.
Confusing BioShock 2 multiplayer with campaign co-op
Older articles often use “multiplayer” and “co-op” loosely. The manual and 2K description make a narrower distinction: Multiplayer is launched separately, uses combat and matchmaking, and is not described as cooperative story progression. Use the mode’s actual function, not the broad label, to decide whether it meets your goal.

Assuming the Collection preserves every original feature
A remastered compilation is not automatically feature-identical to each original release. The official Collection pages emphasize single-player material and do not list co-op. If the product page does not explicitly promise the online mode you want, do not buy it expecting that mode to appear after installation.

Following platform-neutral instructions
“Click Multiplayer, invite a friend, and start a campaign” is not a reliable universal procedure for BioShock. Even where an original BioShock 2 copy contains a Multiplayer menu, the platform, edition, and present-day service status determine whether anything can be launched. Instructions that omit those three details are likely describing a different release.
How to choose the right expectation
| Your objective | Supported BioShock path | Expectation to set |
|---|---|---|
| Play the story with a friend online | None of the cited games or editions | There is no supported setup procedure |
| Play the story together on one screen | No built-in split-screen campaign | Only informal turn-taking or watching is possible |
| Play a historical BioShock 2 online mode | Original BioShock 2 release, if the mode is included and still accessible | Separate combat matchmaking, not campaign co-op |
| Buy the Collection for cooperative play | Not supported by the official included-content descriptions | The Collection should be treated as single-player content |
Practical ways to experience the story with another person
If the social goal matters more than network control, two people can still enjoy a campaign informally. One person can play while the other watches, suggests choices, maps routes, or takes turns at checkpoints. You can also alternate sessions between players and keep a shared set of decisions or build notes. These arrangements happen outside the game’s networking features; they do not create simultaneous co-op, shared health, or a second playable character.
For a genuine two-player campaign, choose a game that explicitly advertises online or local cooperative story play rather than trying to retrofit BioShock. Controllers, headsets, platform invites, and network changes cannot supply a missing mode, so accessories are not a solution to this particular compatibility limitation.
Quick Recap
Bottom line for each question
- How do I play BioShock co-op? You cannot play the cited BioShock story campaigns in supported co-op; there is no setup path.
- Does BioShock 2 have co-op? Its original release had separate multiplayer combat, not cooperative campaign progression.
- Can I play BioShock with a friend? You can share the experience by watching or taking turns, and you may be able to access original BioShock 2 multiplayer if your edition exposes it and the service is available, but you cannot enter the story together.
- Does BioShock: The Collection add co-op? Its official PlayStation and Epic descriptions focus on single-player content and do not list a cooperative mode or promise the original BioShock 2 multiplayer.
