To set up parental controls, link your account to your teen’s ChatGPT account through Settings > Parental controls. Either of you can send an invitation, but the other person must accept it. Once linked, you can manage supported settings and schedules from your teen’s entry under Family members. Linking does not let you read your teen’s chats or watch their activity in real time.
Link your account to your teen’s
OpenAI’s Help Center documents two ways to start the link. Use the method that is easiest; either way, the recipient must accept the invitation before the accounts are connected. The labels below are for the web settings flow.
Send an invitation as the parent or guardian
- Open the profile menu and select Settings.
- Select Parental controls, then Add family member.
- Under Invite family member, choose Use phone or Use email.
- Enter your teen’s phone number or email address and select Send.
- Ask your teen to open the link in the text or email and accept. They may also receive an in-app notification.
- After acceptance, return to Settings > Parental controls and select your teen under Family members to review available settings.
Have your teen invite you
- On your teen’s account, open Settings > Parental controls.
- Select Invite a parent, choose phone or email, enter your contact information, and send the invitation.
- Accept the invitation. Your name should then appear under Family members on your teen’s account.
If you already sent an invitation, your teen can accept it from Settings > Parental controls. A parent can link with more than one teen, but each teen can link to only one parent or guardian at a time. Either person can unlink the accounts.
Choose controls based on what you want to manage
In Settings > Parental controls, select your teen under Family members. OpenAI lists the following controls and defaults. Availability and defaults can vary by setting and, where noted, region.

Study hours or Quiet hours?
Choose Study hours if you want eligible new conversations to start in Study mode at selected times. Choose Quiet hours if you want to block ChatGPT use during a schedule. Study hours are a learning-oriented default, not an access restriction; Quiet hours are the time-based access limit.
Understand the ChatGPT Work controls
Codex network access and Cloud browser govern different ChatGPT Work capabilities. Turning off Codex network access blocks code run by ChatGPT Work from connecting to online services; it does not control search, plugins, connectors, or the Cloud browser. Turning off Cloud browser prevents ChatGPT Work from using its built-in browser to visit public websites.

Turning off most controls hides or blocks the related feature. Turning one on makes that feature available while other ChatGPT safety protections continue to apply. A change may not take effect immediately or may apply only to new conversations; existing conversations can retain their previous settings.
Change supported settings with ChatGPT
A parent can also ask ChatGPT to review or update supported controls for a linked teen. Review the requested change and choose Allow or Deny. Some settings, invitations, and linked-account management still require Settings > Parental controls.

Know what linking does—and does not—show you
Linking does not give a parent access to a teen’s conversations, chat history, or real-time activity. It enables management of supported settings and may enable limited safety notifications; it is not a way to monitor chats.
OpenAI says it may send a notification in limited situations involving serious concerns. Its examples include a specially trained reviewer identifying a serious self-harm concern, a reviewer identifying behavior associated with disordered eating that could signal a health concern (Chat only, not Work or Codex), or an account deactivation related to violence under OpenAI’s Usage Policies. Notifications do not include chat transcripts or history, are not real-time monitoring, and may not identify every concern. They are enabled by default after linking, but may take a few hours to become available; delivery can include email, SMS, or push notification.

If you receive a notification, OpenAI advises checking in with your teen and helping them reach a trusted person, qualified professional, or crisis helpline. If there may be immediate danger, contact local emergency services.

ChatGPT for Teens is enabled automatically for eligible accounts when account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction indicates the account holder is under 18. Parents do not need to enable the teen experience separately, and parental linking is optional. Eligible teen accounts can use the experience on Free and paid personal plans.

To review the age category associated with an eligible personal account, go to Settings > Account > Age. The setting shows a category; it does not allow the user to edit their birth date. A Verify age option is not available on every account.
What happens when a teen turns 18?
When ChatGPT identifies the account holder as 18 or older and the account moves out of the teen experience, teen protections turn off by default and linked parental controls end. The parent can no longer manage settings or receive teen safety notifications. If the account holder believes the classification is wrong, they can review the age category and complete age verification if the option is available; a parent cannot verify on their behalf. If verification confirms the account is still under 18, the accounts may need to be linked again.
Either person can unlink at any time. If the teen unlinks, the parent is notified and can no longer manage settings or receive safety notifications for that account.
