Use the teen’s own eligible personal account, let ChatGPT apply its Teen protections automatically, and decide together whether to link a parent account. A linked parent can change selected settings but cannot open the teen’s conversations or chat history. Privacy settings can limit history, memory, and model-improvement use; they do not make it appropriate to enter passwords, financial identifiers, precise location, private images, or other highly sensitive information.
What ChatGPT for Teens does—and does not do
OpenAI says eligible accounts recognized as belonging to someone under 18 are placed in ChatGPT for Teens automatically. Eligibility can be based on account-provided age information, verified age, or age prediction. The experience is available to eligible teen accounts on Free and paid personal plans, although availability varies by region. Families do not activate a separate “teen mode,” and a parent should not sign in as the teen or share the parent’s credentials. Follow any teen-specific onboarding shown after the teen signs in. Teen protections add safeguards intended to reduce some sensitive content. They are not a guarantee that every answer will be suitable, accurate, or safe. OpenAI describes a sensitive-content reduction setting that is on by default while teen protections apply; it may reduce graphic violence, risky challenges, sexual or violent roleplay, and other sensitive responses. ChatGPT for Teens is not a private family vault. Normal service, safety, and account operations can still involve data processing. Privacy controls reduce particular uses or retention behaviors, but none is a promise that disclosing highly sensitive information is consequence-free.

Before you create or link anything
Use an account that belongs to the teen
Start with the teen’s own personal account. Do not put the teen’s conversations inside a parent’s account: doing so mixes identities, settings, and history and makes the privacy boundary harder to understand. School-managed or workspace accounts may have different controls from personal plans, so do not assume that every organization’s interface matches the consumer Teen experience.
Check regional and account eligibility
Feature availability can vary by region, plan, and account type. The title does not identify a country, so local terms, age rules, and privacy obligations cannot be stated universally. Review the current Help Center terms for the teen’s location rather than relying on a general minimum-age claim.
Set expectations before the first chat
Tell the teen that a parent link controls selected settings, not conversation content. Agree on what kinds of questions need a trusted adult, teacher, doctor, or other qualified person instead of an AI answer. Explain that generated information can be wrong and should be checked, a point also emphasized in OpenAI’s family guide to using AI responsibly.

- Have the teen sign in to their own eligible personal ChatGPT account.
- Complete any onboarding that identifies the account as a teen account. OpenAI’s age categorization can use information supplied at account creation, age verification, or age prediction.
- Read the protections and settings shown in the onboarding screen. Labels and availability can change, so use the controls actually displayed for that account.
- If the account is incorrectly treated as an adult, check Settings > Account for age-status information. Eligible users may be offered age verification; availability depends on the account and region. The process is described in Age prediction in ChatGPT.
There is no separate parent credential that must be used to activate the Teen experience. A parent can remain the owner of their own account and connect it later if the family wants the available controls.
Step 2: Decide whether to link a parent account
Linking is optional. Either the parent or guardian can send an invitation, or the teen can invite the parent. The teen must accept before the accounts are linked. The invitation and acceptance flow are described in OpenAI’s ChatGPT for Teens guidance and the parental-controls announcement.

What a linked parent can see
A linked parent does not get access to the teen’s chat content, conversation history, or real-time activity. The controls are for selected account settings rather than chat surveillance. OpenAI says it may send a parent limited safety notifications in certain situations, sharing only information needed to support the teen’s safety. That possibility is different from giving the parent a transcript or a live feed.
What to discuss before accepting
- Which settings the parent will manage and which the teen will manage.
- Whether the family wants quiet hours or study-related restrictions.
- When a safety notification should lead to an in-person conversation or professional help.
- How the family will handle an urgent concern without treating an AI account as an emergency service.
If the family does not need shared settings, leaving accounts unlinked avoids adding a control relationship that may not be useful. The teen still receives the protections that apply to an eligible Teen account.

From the linked account’s parental-control area, review every option currently offered. OpenAI’s published list includes quiet hours, voice mode, memory, image generation, and opting out of model training. Current Teen guidance also describes Study hours, which can cause eligible new chats to start in study mode. Names, locations, and availability can change, so use the controls visible in the account rather than an old screenshot.

Turning off memory or opting out of model improvement is a settings choice, not a promise that no data is processed for service delivery, security, abuse prevention, or other purposes. OpenAI explains these distinctions in its ChatGPT privacy settings page and consumer data practices article.
Step 4: Review the teen’s own privacy controls
Data Controls
In ChatGPT, open Settings and locate Data controls. Review the model-improvement preference and any other data options offered for that account. Interface labels can shift; use the Settings search field or the current privacy settings guidance if the menu is arranged differently.

Personalization and Memory
Open Settings > Personalization to review Memory. If Memory is enabled, ChatGPT may save useful details and use them in later chats. Disable it when the family wants each conversation to stand on its own. Review and remove existing saved memories using the controls provided; switching off future memory behavior does not necessarily erase information already stored unless the interface offers a separate deletion action.

For a conversation the teen does not want in normal chat history or used to create or update memories, start a Temporary Chat. OpenAI says Temporary Chats are not used to improve its models while they remain temporary. Temporary Chat is still a product setting, not a general guarantee of secrecy. Do not use it as permission to submit passwords, identity documents, private medical records, or another person’s confidential information. Step 5: Use a clear personal-information rule
A short rule is easier to remember than a long privacy policy: if the teen would not post a detail on a public noticeboard or hand it to an unknown person, pause before entering it into an AI chat. The family can make that rule more concrete with the following checklist.
- Never enter credentials: passwords, passcodes, recovery codes, authentication tokens, or private API keys.
- Protect financial and government identifiers: payment-card numbers, bank details, tax numbers, passport numbers, national ID numbers, and complete benefit or insurance identifiers.
- Limit location and contact data: a precise home address, live location, private phone number, personal email address, school timetable, or routine that makes the teen easy to find.
- Be cautious with images: do not upload private or intimate images, images that reveal another person’s identity without consent, or photographs containing documents, badges, addresses, or metadata the family has not considered.
- Protect other people: do not paste a friend’s messages, a classmate’s identifying details, or someone else’s medical, disciplinary, or family information without a clear need and permission.
When a task needs an example, replace real details with placeholders such as “a city in my region,” “a fictional account number,” or “Student A.” Check the result for accidental personal information before sharing it elsewhere.
Step 6: Explain the limits of safeguards and AI answers
Age-appropriate filtering can reduce some graphic, sexual, violent, or dangerous material, but it cannot classify every prompt perfectly. A teen may still receive an answer that is unsuitable, incomplete, or factually wrong. Treat the safety setting as a risk-reduction layer, not a substitute for supervision, judgment, or professional advice.

Ask the teen to verify important claims with a teacher, official public-health source, qualified professional, or primary documentation. For health, self-harm, abuse, legal, or immediate-danger concerns, move the conversation to a trusted adult or appropriate emergency or support service. ChatGPT is not an emergency-monitoring system.
Step 7: Recheck the setup after changes
Teen protections and account age categories are not necessarily permanent. OpenAI says age categorization and controls can change. If the service identifies the account holder as 18 or older, the account may leave the Teen experience; parent linking can end, and the family would need to set it up again if the feature is available and still wanted.
The transition to adult settings is rolling out to eligible accounts. Review Settings > Account periodically, especially after a birthday, age-verification event, plan change, or major app update. Troubleshooting common setup problems
The teen does not see Teen protections
Confirm that the teen is signed in to the intended personal account, not a parent’s account or a workspace account. Check Settings > Account and complete any age-related onboarding or verification offered. Availability varies by region, and the rollout may not be identical for every account.
The parent invitation was not completed
Send a fresh invitation from the parent or teen account, then have the teen explicitly accept it while signed in to the correct account. Linking is not active until acceptance. If the account has already moved out of the Teen experience, parent controls may have ended.

The parent expects to read chats
That expectation is outside the documented design. Explain before linking that parental controls manage selected settings and may trigger limited safety notifications in certain situations; they do not provide conversation history or live monitoring.
A setting is missing
Feature names and availability change by region, plan, account type, and rollout stage. Use Settings search and the current Help Center article instead of assuming that a control listed in an older guide must appear on the account.
The teen entered sensitive information
Stop sharing the information, delete the conversation or saved memory using the controls available in the account, and review whether Temporary Chat, Memory, and model-improvement preferences should change. If credentials, financial identifiers, or identity documents were exposed, follow the relevant provider’s steps to change, freeze, or replace them. A ChatGPT setting cannot undo disclosure to people or services that already received the information.
Make the privacy agreement a conversation, not a surveillance plan
The strongest setup combines technical controls with a short, explicit family agreement. Decide when a parent should be told about a frightening or dangerous response, how the teen can ask for help without fear of punishment, and which sources count as reliable for school or health questions. Revisit the agreement when the teen’s needs, account age category, or available controls change.
OpenAI’s parental-controls announcement quotes Robbie Torney, Senior Director, AI Programs at Common Sense Media, describing parental controls as a starting point that works best with ongoing conversations, clear family technology rules, and active involvement. That is a practical description of the boundary: settings can reduce exposure and manage selected features, while trust, privacy habits, and human judgment remain essential.
