FreeIPA gives a Linux and UNIX network one place to store users, groups, hosts, Kerberos identities, certificates and access policy. The reliable deployment order is: design the DNS domain and Kerberos realm, prepare a permanently named server with working forward and reverse DNS, install the FreeIPA server, create narrowly scoped HBAC and sudo rules, then enroll Linux clients with ipa-client-install so SSSD, NSS, PAM and Kerberos are configured together.

Do the DNS, hostname and time work first. Kerberos and client service discovery depend on them; trying to repair those prerequisites after deployment is much harder than validating them before installation.

What FreeIPA centralizes

FreeIPA is an integrated identity and security-management platform for Linux and UNIX environments. Its server combines 389 Directory Server for LDAP data, MIT Kerberos for ticket-based authentication, DNS for service discovery, Dogtag Certificate System for certificates, and SSSD integrations for Linux clients. Administrators can use a web interface or the ipa command-line client.

The directory stores users, groups, hosts, host groups and service principals. Kerberos provides single sign-on after a user obtains a ticket. SSSD connects a client’s name-service and authentication stacks to the directory and Kerberos. Host-based access control (HBAC) decides which identities may use which services on which hosts, while centrally managed sudo rules assign privilege without maintaining separate files on every machine.

This design is different from installing an LDAP server and a Kerberos server independently: FreeIPA supplies the integration, policy objects, certificates, DNS records and Linux enrollment workflow as one managed system.

Plan the deployment before installing anything

Choose a supported server platform and size

The upstream quick-start guidance targets Fedora or Red Hat Enterprise Linux for the server. Other Linux distributions can often act as clients, but verify client-package and SSSD support for the exact release you intend to use. Start with a virtual machine for a first deployment; the installer configures LDAP, DNS, PKI and related services, so a VM makes rollback and experimentation safer.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The FreeIPA quick-start guide reports an absolute minimum of 1.2 GB of memory to install with a certificate authority and recommends 2 GB for a demonstration or test system. Treat those figures as a floor, not a production sizing recommendation: directory size, certificate load, replication, logging and concurrent clients require additional capacity.

Fix the hostname, DNS domain and Kerberos realm

Give the first server its final fully qualified hostname before running the installer. Kerberos principals and certificates contain host identity information; changing the hostname after deployment can break authentication and service registration.

Design item What to decide Why it matters
Server FQDN For example, ipa1.id.example.net; keep it stable Kerberos, certificates and service principals depend on the name
IPA DNS domain The domain under which IPA hosts and service records live Clients use it for discovery and name resolution
Kerberos realm Usually the DNS domain in uppercase, such as ID.EXAMPLE.NET It is the trust boundary for Kerberos tickets
Directory suffix Normally derived from the DNS domain It determines where LDAP entries are stored

Publish a forward A or AAAA record for the server and a matching reverse PTR record before installation. Test both directions from the server and from a representative client. Plan the IPA domain and realm so they do not overlap an Active Directory DNS domain if you may create an AD trust later. Overlapping namespaces can prevent trust establishment and automatic SRV-record discovery.

Synchronize time and open only the required paths

Kerberos rejects tickets outside its permitted clock-skew window. Configure the platform-supported time service on every server, replica and client, and verify that clocks remain synchronized after reboots. Apply a documented firewall policy that permits DNS, Kerberos, LDAP/LDAPS, HTTP/HTTPS and the other ports required by the exact FreeIPA release and enabled services. Keep the policy identical on prospective replicas.

Install the first FreeIPA server

  1. Prepare the host. Set the final name and verify it locally:
    hostnamectl set-hostname ipa1.id.example.net
    hostname --fqdn
The second command should return the planned FQDN, not a short name or an address from an unexpected resolver.
  2. Validate DNS before installing. From the server and a client, check forward and reverse records with commands such as dig ipa1.id.example.net A, dig -x SERVER_IP, and, after the IPA zone is planned, the relevant SRV lookups. Fix resolver configuration, delegation and firewall problems now.
  3. Install the server packages. On the platform covered by the quick-start procedure, install the base package:
    dnf install freeipa-server
If FreeIPA will provide DNS, add the DNS package:
    dnf install freeipa-server-dns
  4. Run the installer. For a first deployment, start the interactive workflow:
    ipa-server-install
Answer the prompts for the DNS domain, Kerberos realm, Directory Manager password, IPA administrator password and DNS role. The installer checks hostname and DNS assumptions, then configures LDAP, Kerberos, certificates, DNS and the web and command-line administration interfaces. Automated builds can pass explicit installer options, but obtain secrets through your approved secret-management method rather than embedding real passwords in shell history, scripts or documentation.
  5. Record the identity boundary securely. Store the IPA DNS domain, Kerberos realm and administrator and Directory Manager credentials in the organization’s secure secret store. The Directory Manager account is a directory-management credential, not a daily login; use the admin identity or delegated accounts for routine administration.
  6. Obtain an administrator ticket and inspect the installation.
    kinit admin
    klist
    ipactl status
klist should show a ticket for the planned realm. If ticket acquisition fails, stop and correct DNS, time, realm or credential issues before enrolling clients.

Create users, groups and host objects

Use groups as the unit of administration. This lets access rules follow a person’s role instead of requiring per-host edits.

ipa user-add alice --first=Alice --last=Example
ipa group-add linux-users
ipa group-add-member linux-users --users=alice
ipa hostgroup-add linux-clients
ipa host-add client1.id.example.net
ipa hostgroup-add-member linux-clients --hosts=client1.id.example.net

The exact prompts and optional attributes vary by release. Use ipa help and the command-specific help on the installed version when adding mail attributes, SSH keys, certificates or delegated administrators.

Publish narrow HBAC and sudo policy

Host-based access control

HBAC rules answer three questions together: which users or groups, which hosts or host groups, and which services. Begin with a test group and a test host. Do not leave a broad allow-all rule enabled in production.

ipa hbacrule-add linux-ssh
ipa hbacrule-add-user linux-ssh --groups=linux-users
ipa hbacrule-add-host linux-ssh --hostgroups=linux-clients
ipa hbacrule-add-service linux-ssh --hbacsvcs=sshd
ipa hbacrule-enable linux-ssh

Keep a local break-glass account and an emergency console path while testing. Do not remove the only local administrator until a directory user has successfully authenticated, the intended HBAC rule has been evaluated, and recovery has been demonstrated.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Central sudo rules

Sudo rules can assign commands to groups and host groups so privilege follows the directory rather than a hand-edited /etc/sudoers file on each client.

ipa sudorule-add linux-operators
ipa sudorule-add-user linux-operators --groups=linux-users
ipa sudorule-add-host linux-operators --hostgroups=linux-clients
ipa sudorule-add-allow-command linux-operators --command=/usr/bin/systemctl

Grant only the commands and arguments required for the role. After a client is enrolled, run sudo -l as a test user and verify that the result contains the intended rule and no unexpected privilege.

Enroll Linux clients with SSSD

Point the resolver at IPA first

Before installing client software, configure the client resolver so it can resolve the IPA server and its SRV records. The client must be able to find the IPA DNS domain; a hosts-file entry alone is not a substitute for the service records used by Kerberos and SSSD discovery.

Check the result with:

dig ipa1.id.example.net
 dig _kerberos._udp.id.example.net SRV
 dig _ldap._tcp.id.example.net SRV

Remove the accidental leading space before dig if your shell treats it specially; the important point is that the lookups return the planned server and ports.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Install the matching client package

On RHEL and compatible distributions, install ipa-client. On Fedora, install freeipa-client. Use the package name and repository appropriate to the installed release, then confirm that the package provides ipa-client-install.

Run the enrollment workflow

With DNS autodiscovery working, the normal command is:

ipa-client-install --mkhomedir

The installer asks for the IPA domain, server discovery and an enrollment identity. If autodiscovery is unsuitable, provide explicit values, for example:

ipa-client-install --mkhomedir --domain id.example.net --server ipa1.id.example.net

Use an approved enrollment principal or one-time enrollment credential instead of distributing the permanent administrator password. The installer writes the host identity and keytab, configures SSSD, Kerberos, NSS and PAM, and installs the certificates and SSH integration needed by the enrolled host. The --mkhomedir option enables creation of a user’s local home directory at first login when the distribution’s pam_mkhomedir support is available.

Understand what SSSD changes

SSSD supplies directory-backed identity lookups to NSS and authentication to PAM. It obtains and renews Kerberos credentials, caches selected information for controlled offline operation, discovers IPA servers through DNS and evaluates IPA policy data such as HBAC and sudo rules. The enrollment process also creates the host’s Kerberos principal and keytab. Avoid manually replacing the generated SSSD configuration unless you understand which settings are managed by the IPA tools; an apparently harmless edit can disable discovery or policy evaluation.

Validate identity, Kerberos and service authorization

Test in layers so a failure points to the right subsystem.

  1. Check the host name: hostname --fqdn must return the enrolled FQDN.
  2. Check DNS: forward and reverse lookups for the IPA server and SRV lookups for Kerberos and LDAP must succeed from the client.
  3. Check the host enrollment: as an IPA administrator, run ipa host-show client1.id.example.net.
  4. Check directory lookup: getent passwd alice and id alice should return the expected UID, group membership and home directory.
  5. Check Kerberos: as the user, run kinit alice, enter the password when prompted, then run klist and confirm the ticket realm.
  6. Check the actual service: attempt an SSH login from an approved network path. This exercises PAM, SSSD, Kerberos and HBAC together.
  7. Check home-directory creation: on the first successful login, verify that the expected home directory exists and has the correct ownership.
  8. Check sudo policy: run sudo -l and compare the displayed commands with the intended central rule.

A successful getent result proves identity lookup, not authorization. A successful kinit proves ticket issuance, not SSH access. The end-to-end login test is therefore essential.

DNS, replicas and availability

FreeIPA uses DNS SRV records for Kerberos and LDAP service discovery. Clients can select a nearby server first and use remote replicas as fallback when the DNS data and network topology are correct. Keep resolver settings, time synchronization, firewall rules, certificate renewal and DNS data consistent across all replicas.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

For a resilient deployment, install an additional replica with the replica-specific procedure for the exact FreeIPA release, verify replication status, and then test lookups and logins while the original server is unavailable. A replica must be able to contact the master LDAP server during installation and synchronization.

Do not run ipa-server-install on a replica. That command creates a new initial server rather than joining an existing topology. Use the release’s replica-install procedure and its required enrollment credentials and topology options.

Active Directory and non-SSSD clients

FreeIPA can integrate with Active Directory through a cross-realm Kerberos trust or synchronization, but trust deployments require distinct DNS planning and network reachability. Reserve separate, non-overlapping namespaces before installation if an AD trust is a future requirement.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Standard LDAP and Kerberos clients can interoperate for basic authentication. They do not automatically receive every Linux policy feature. SSSD is the normal path when you need IPA-aware NSS and PAM, Kerberos single sign-on, HBAC, centrally managed sudo, certificates and richer host integration.

How FreeIPA compares with common alternatives

Capability FreeIPA Active Directory Samba AD Standalone LDAP plus Kerberos
Linux client integration SSSD and ipa-client-install are first-class enrollment tools Linux integration is available, but the client design and policy coverage depend on the chosen tools AD-compatible integration is available; verify SSSD and policy support for the target release Usually assembled and maintained as separate client configurations
Kerberos SSO Built in and tied to IPA identities and service principals Built in to the AD realm Provides an AD-compatible Kerberos realm Possible, but the directory and Kerberos lifecycle are separate
DNS and discovery Integrated DNS and SRV-based discovery are central to deployment AD DNS is normally part of the directory design DNS design depends on the Samba deployment Must be designed and maintained independently
Linux authorization policy HBAC and central sudo rules are native policy objects Equivalent Linux policy depth depends on the integration layer Verify which Linux policy objects are exposed in the selected design Basic authentication is possible; richer authorization requires additional tooling
Certificates Dogtag Certificate System can be managed as part of the platform Uses the Microsoft certificate ecosystem when deployed Certificate management depends on the surrounding services Requires a separate certificate solution
Best fit Linux-first identity, Kerberos, policy and certificate management Organizations centered on Microsoft directory services or requiring an AD trust Organizations needing an AD-compatible, self-hosted directory stack Teams prepared to integrate and operate each component separately

The table describes architectural tendencies, not a guarantee for every release. Confirm support, replication behavior and policy features against the server and client versions you will operate.

Troubleshoot by symptom

Symptom Likely cause Checks and corrective action
ipa-server-install rejects the host name The name is short, changes between lookups or lacks matching DNS Set the final FQDN, make forward and reverse records agree, then rerun validation before reinstalling
Client cannot discover an IPA server The resolver is using the wrong DNS server or SRV records are missing Inspect /etc/resolv.conf, run the A, PTR and SRV dig checks, and correct delegation or firewall rules
kinit reports clock skew Server and client time differ Check the supported time service on every node, correct the source or firewall path, then retry after clocks converge
getent passwd returns nothing SSSD is not running, cannot reach LDAP, or has stale configuration Inspect the SSSD service and logs, verify DNS and network reachability, and confirm that the host is present in IPA
kinit fails for a known user Wrong realm, password, DNS path or account state Check klist, realm spelling, user status with ipa user-show, time and resolver settings
Identity lookup works but SSH is denied No matching HBAC rule, wrong host group or wrong service name Confirm the user and host are members of the intended groups, that the rule covers sshd, and that it is enabled
SSH works but expected sudo rights are absent The sudo rule does not match the user, host or command Run sudo -l, inspect the rule with ipa sudorule-show, and correct group, host or command associations
First login has no home directory --mkhomedir was omitted or the platform module is not enabled Enable the distribution’s pam_mkhomedir equivalent and confirm that the client’s PAM configuration contains it
A replica does not answer requests Replication, DNS, time, certificate renewal or firewall inconsistency Check replica status and logs, compare resolver and time settings, verify required ports, and test direct and SRV-based lookups

Operate the service safely after rollout

  • Keep at least one tested local break-glass account and an out-of-band console path on critical clients.
  • Use group-based HBAC and sudo rules, start narrow, test with a non-privileged account, and expand only when the result is understood.
  • Protect Directory Manager and administrator credentials in a secure secret store; do not place them in scripts, shell history or copied terminal output.
  • Monitor DNS resolution, Kerberos ticket issuance, LDAP and SSSD health, replica replication, certificate renewal and time synchronization.
  • Keep server and client packages on supported versions and follow the release-specific procedures for upgrades and replica changes.
  • Test a client login through each intended replica path and document how to recover if the primary server or DNS service is unavailable.
  • Review SSH keys, certificates, host principals, password policy, HBAC membership and sudo assignments as part of normal access reviews.

When these controls are in place, FreeIPA becomes a single policy and identity plane for Linux authentication without turning every host into a separately managed directory, Kerberos realm and authorization database.
