To add cellular service, you need a cellular-capable (usually LTE) watch, a compatible phone and carrier account, and an eligible smartwatch plan. Start in the watch’s companion app, complete the carrier’s enrollment and eSIM prompts, then test the watch away from the phone. A watch advertised as 5G is not automatically compatible with every 5G network: model bands, country, carrier, account type, and coverage all matter.
This guide covers Apple Watch, Google Pixel Watch, and Samsung Galaxy Watch activation, explains number sharing versus a separate line, and provides recovery steps when the cellular plan will not add.
What you need before activation
Cellular service is built into the watch hardware. A Bluetooth/Wi-Fi-only model cannot become cellular by installing an eSIM or purchasing a plan. Confirm the exact model designation, not just the product family name: manufacturers often sell GPS/Wi-Fi and LTE versions that look identical.
Recommended Free Tools
| Check | What to verify | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Radio and model | Cellular/LTE model; verify 5G support separately | The radio determines whether the watch can connect at all. LTE capability does not imply 5G. |
| Region | Country of purchase and country where service will be used | Cellular models are region-specific. Apple says no single Apple Watch model supports cellular service worldwide. |
| Carrier | That provider supports your exact watch model and offers smartwatch service | Carrier firmware, eSIM provisioning, supported bands, and plan rules differ. |
| Phone and pairing | Compatible iPhone or Android phone, current operating system, and an active pairing | Normal activation is initiated through the companion app on the paired phone. |
| Account | Eligible postpaid or other supported account, phone line, and coverage | Some prepaid, enterprise, family, or older accounts cannot add a watch line. |
| Plan design | Number sharing, a dedicated watch line, family setup, or standalone service | These are carrier features, not universal smartwatch capabilities. |
Have the account owner available if the carrier requires a password, one-time code, or authorization. Keep the phone and watch charged, connected to Wi-Fi or mobile data, and close together during setup.

5G, LTE, and what “cellular” means on a watch
“Cellular” means the watch contains a mobile radio and can authenticate to a carrier without the phone nearby. Most smartwatch activation instructions are written for LTE service. A 5G label is an additional capability, not a replacement for LTE compatibility.
Apple’s support documentation identifies Apple Watch models introduced in 2024 and earlier as connecting to LTE and 3G, while Series 11 and later, Apple Watch SE (3rd generation), and Ultra 3 and later can connect to LTE and 5G where available. Apple also states that 5G requires a mobile plan with a participating network provider. Do not assume that every cellular Apple Watch, every regional model, or every carrier plan uses 5G.
Pixel Watch cellular documentation describes the service as 4G LTE. Galaxy Watch LTE instructions likewise describe an LTE model and an eligible carrier plan. If your goal is 5G specifically, ask the carrier whether the exact watch SKU is provisioned for 5G in your country; a carrier may activate the watch on LTE even when the phone uses 5G.
Universal activation checklist
- Identify the model. Read the model name and cellular marking on the box, receipt, watch settings, or manufacturer account. Confirm it is the LTE/cellular edition and record its EID, IMEI, and ICCID if displayed.
- Check regional and carrier compatibility. Use the manufacturer’s regional list and the carrier’s current smartwatch eligibility page. Confirm the phone operating system, account type, coverage, and whether the provider supports number sharing, a separate line, family setup, or standalone use.
- Update everything. Install the latest available phone software, watch firmware, and companion app. Updates can add carrier bundles or correct eSIM provisioning failures.
- Pair before enrolling. Keep the watch paired to the phone unless the carrier’s instructions explicitly describe a standalone enrollment. Standard setup starts inside the platform’s companion app.
- Start the mobile-plan flow. Use Apple Watch, the Pixel Watch app, or Galaxy Wearable. Follow the carrier’s sign-in, address, consent, and eSIM screens rather than trying to add a generic phone eSIM.
- Supply the requested identifier. Enter or confirm the EID, IMEI, or ICCID, or scan a carrier-issued QR code. A QR code can be tied to a single activation; after a reset or service change, obtain a fresh code unless the provider confirms the old one remains valid.
- Wait for confirmation. Leave the devices connected while the carrier provisions service. Do not erase the watch or cancel the old plan during this stage.
- Test independently. After the app reports an active plan, turn off the phone’s Bluetooth or leave the phone behind in a safe place. Check the watch’s cellular indicator, place a call, send a message, and open a data-dependent app in an area with coverage.
Set up cellular on Apple Watch
Requirements and compatibility
You need a cellular Apple Watch, an iPhone capable of pairing with that model, and an eligible plan from a supported provider. For ordinary paired setup, Apple says the iPhone and watch generally use the same provider. Apple Watch For Your Kids is an exception with its own participating-carrier rules. Some prepaid, enterprise, and older accounts may not be supported, so the carrier must confirm eligibility.
Apple’s cellular models are optimized for the country or region where they are sold. There is no single Apple Watch cellular model that works worldwide. Check the purchase region and the country where you intend to activate before buying or importing a watch.

Activation from an already-paired iPhone
- Open the Watch app on the iPhone.
- Tap My Watch, then Cellular (the label may appear as Mobile in some regions).
- Tap Set Up Cellular.
- Follow the carrier’s sign-in and enrollment screens. You may be asked to select a phone line, accept a monthly charge, verify the account owner, or provide an address.
- When requested, confirm the watch identifier or complete the carrier’s eSIM step. Keep the Watch app open until activation finishes.
- Return to My Watch > Cellular/Mobile and confirm the plan status is active.
Activation during first-time pairing
When the iPhone displays the cellular-plan option during Apple Watch setup, choose Set Up Cellular and complete the same carrier flow. If you skip it, you can return later through Watch > My Watch > Cellular/Mobile.
Apple Watch 5G limits
Only the Apple models identified by Apple’s current setup documentation as 5G-capable support 5G, and only where a participating provider offers it. A cellular plan may therefore be active while the watch uses LTE. The watch’s status and the carrier’s coverage map are the authoritative indicators.

- If Set Up Cellular is missing, verify that the watch is the cellular edition, the iPhone is paired, and the account is eligible.
- If the carrier page loops or stalls, connect the iPhone to Wi-Fi, update both devices, and retry.
- Apple recommends toggling Airplane Mode on both the iPhone and watch, then restarting both, before contacting the provider.
- Have the watch EID or IMEI and the iPhone’s account details ready for carrier support. The provider, not Apple, controls account eligibility and eSIM provisioning.
Set up cellular on Google Pixel Watch
How Pixel Watch service is structured
Pixel Watch cellular service is documented as 4G LTE. After pairing and activation, a compatible carrier setup lets the watch share the phone’s number while requiring a separate line on the account. The watch can call and use supported apps away from the phone, subject to coverage and the carrier’s feature restrictions.
Google publishes carrier-specific instructions by region. Use the instructions for your provider rather than assuming that a plan offered for one country or Pixel Watch generation applies elsewhere.
Activation steps
- Pair the Pixel Watch with the compatible Android phone and open the Pixel Watch app.
- Choose the mobile-plan or cellular setup option in the app.
- Select your carrier and sign in when redirected to the provider.
- Choose the eligible phone account and watch plan. Review whether the provider uses number sharing or assigns a separate watch line for billing.
- Enter any requested device details and approve the eSIM download.
- Wait for the app to show an active mobile plan, then test with the phone out of Bluetooth range.
Find the Pixel Watch EID
If support asks for the EID, on the watch open Settings > Connectivity > Mobile > SIM status. Read the EID exactly as shown. A mistyped identifier can attach the plan to the wrong device or cause provisioning to fail.

Google Fi as a provider-specific example
Google Fi’s documented smartwatch service has narrower rules than a general Pixel Watch setup: it requires a supported US model, an active Fi plan, and a paired Android phone, along with additional account and device conditions. Fi says the covered smartwatch service shares the phone number and cannot be activated as a standalone plan, and it lists geography limitations. Treat those rules as Fi-specific, not as a universal Pixel Watch limitation.
Set up cellular on Samsung Galaxy Watch
Requirements
Samsung’s LTE activation path requires an LTE Galaxy Watch and a carrier plan that supports it. The US instructions for the described flow cite Android 5.0 or later, at least 1.5 GB of RAM, and Wi-Fi or mobile connectivity. Those are page-specific requirements that can change with software and carrier support; check the current instructions for your model and country.
Activation in Galaxy Wearable
- Pair the LTE Galaxy Watch with the compatible phone.
- Open Galaxy Wearable.
- Open Watch settings, or from Home choose Mobile plans, depending on the app version.
- Follow the provider prompts to sign in, select an account, and choose Number Share, a separate line, or another available plan.
- Complete the eSIM enrollment. Some providers, including AT&T or Verizon in Samsung’s US guide, require a carrier-provided QR code.
- Wait for confirmation, then check the mobile-plan status in Galaxy Wearable and test away from the phone.
Find Galaxy Watch identifiers
When the carrier requests an EID, IMEI, or ICCID, on the watch open Settings > About watch > Device. Copy the identifier without spaces or extra characters. If a QR code is required, use the code supplied for that activation rather than one found in an unrelated phone setup.
Verizon’s two Galaxy Watch paths
Verizon documents both Number Share and standalone Galaxy Watch service. Number Share requires an active Verizon phone on the same account as the watch. Verizon’s example also requires coverage and, for one route, an activation QR code. Standalone mode cannot be used with Number Share. This illustrates why the carrier’s plan choice must be confirmed before activation: the two modes are not interchangeable.
Number sharing, separate lines, and standalone service
A paired watch often presents the same phone number to people you call, but the carrier may still create a separate line internally for billing and network authorization. Apple notes that a displayed watch number can be used for carrier billing or tracking while the watch and iPhone share the same number. Pixel Watch LTE documentation similarly describes number sharing with a separate line requirement.

| Arrangement | What the user experiences | Typical constraint |
|---|---|---|
| Number sharing | Calls and messages appear to use the phone’s number | Usually requires an eligible phone line on the same carrier account. |
| Dedicated watch line | The watch has its own number for service and billing | Some services still present the phone’s number to contacts; ask the carrier how calls and messages are routed. |
| Family setup | A watch is managed for a family member without the owner’s phone nearby | Supported models, regions, accounts, and features are limited and provider-specific. |
| Standalone | The watch operates without a paired phone line from that provider | Many carriers do not offer it; Google Fi’s covered smartwatch service explicitly excludes standalone activation. |
Do not cancel the phone line that the watch depends on until the provider confirms that the watch has been moved to a standalone or family arrangement. A watch number shown in settings is not proof that the watch has an independent consumer number.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why a cellular plan will not add
The watch is Wi-Fi-only
Check the exact model identifier and packaging. If there is no cellular radio, no software repair or eSIM can add service. The remedy is a cellular model, not another plan.
The model or region is unsupported
Imported watches can use different radio bands or eSIM rules. Confirm the purchase country, watch model, and destination country with the carrier. Apple specifically warns that its cellular models are optimized for their purchase region.
The account or plan is ineligible
Prepaid, enterprise, older, or otherwise restricted accounts may not appear in the companion app. Ask the carrier whether the account supports smartwatch activation, number sharing, family setup, and the exact watch generation.

The identifier or QR code is wrong
Recheck the EID, IMEI, or ICCID from the watch’s settings. Request a new QR code after a reset, replacement, or plan change unless the carrier confirms that the previous code remains valid.
Coverage is unavailable
Activation can succeed while service remains unusable in a weak-signal area. Check the carrier’s coverage map and test outdoors or in another location. Roaming, emergency calling, and data features may have separate restrictions.
When to contact support
Contact the carrier after confirming eligibility, updates, connectivity, and identifiers. Provide the exact watch model, EID/IMEI/ICCID, phone number, account type, error text, and the time of the failed attempt. The carrier can inspect eSIM provisioning and plan status; the manufacturer cannot override carrier account rules.

- In the companion app, confirm that a mobile plan is listed as active rather than pending.
- On the watch, open cellular or mobile settings and check for a connected network indicator.
- Turn off the phone’s Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, or leave it behind within local safety limits.
- Place a short call, send a message, and load a small data-dependent app.
- Restore the normal connection after testing and check battery use; a watch searching for coverage can consume power quickly.
Do not judge 5G solely by an icon. The carrier’s plan eligibility, the watch model, local coverage, and network conditions determine whether 5G is available at a particular moment.
Choosing between watch and carrier options
Use these comparison questions before purchasing hardware or changing providers:
- Is the watch cellular/LTE, and is 5G actually supported for this model and region?
- Does the carrier support the exact model, operating system, and country of activation?
- Must the watch remain paired to a phone, and which phone operating system is required?
- Does the plan share the phone number, assign a separate line, support family setup, or permit standalone use?
- Are prepaid, enterprise, older, or multi-line accounts excluded?
- What coverage, roaming, emergency-calling, and data limits apply?
- What is the current recurring plan price and activation fee? The available documentation does not establish a universal price, so verify the carrier’s current terms.
- Will activation use an in-app carrier flow, an account portal, an EID/IMEI entry, or a QR code?
Carrier support, activation screens, model eligibility, regional availability, pricing, plan names, and 5G coverage can change. Verify the exact watch and account immediately before activation, especially when buying a watch in another country or moving an existing plan.
