To add bots in Counter-Strike 2, enable the developer console, connect to the server running your map, and issue server-side bot commands. Use bot_add for a random bot, bot_add_t or bot_add_ct for a specific team, bot_quota to set the target population, and bot_kick to remove bots. On a dedicated server, run those commands with server permissions or place the convars in the instance’s persistent configuration.
What CS2 bots are and where their commands run
A bot is a computer-controlled player managed by the game server. In CS2, bot commands are server commands: they affect the server that is running the current map, not an arbitrary server you happen to be viewing.
That distinction explains many failed attempts. A command entered in your client console works when you are hosting a local practice or listen session, or when you have the permissions needed to send commands to a remote server. On a dedicated server, use the provider’s server console, the server process console, or an authenticated RCON connection. A normal player console cannot change another administrator’s server.
Prepare the server before adding bots
Enable and open the developer console
- Launch CS2 and open Settings.
- Go to Game and set Enable Developer Console (~) to Yes.
- Press the configured console key (normally the tilde/backtick key) to open the console.
Start a practice or private session if you are testing locally. If you are joining a dedicated server, connect to the intended instance and confirm that you have administrative access before testing commands.

Confirm the active map and mode
Bots depend on the running game mode and map. A command can be valid yet produce no visible bot when the mode does not allow the expected team, the map lacks the required navigation data, or a mode-specific configuration changes the population rules. Check the active level and mode in the server’s status information or provider panel before changing convars.
Decide whether the change is temporary or persistent
Console commands are useful for a one-session test. A dedicated server that must reproduce the setup after every restart needs the same convars in its persistent server configuration or startup mechanism. Provider panels use different labels and file paths, so treat any panel path as an example and follow that provider’s current documentation for the exact field.

Add a bot without choosing a team
Run this command on the server that is running the match:
bot_addCS2 places a bot according to the server’s current team and balancing rules. Repeat the command when you need additional individual bots.
Add a Terrorist or Counter-Terrorist bot
Use a team-specific command when the unspecific form puts the bot on the wrong side:

bot_add_t
bot_add_ctbot_add_t requests a Terrorist bot; bot_add_ct requests a Counter-Terrorist bot. If the selected team is full or the current mode blocks that team, the request may not create a visible player. Check the mode and available slots before assuming the command failed.

The documented team-specific form accepts optional type, difficulty, and name arguments:
bot_add_ct <type> <difficulty> <name>The corresponding options can be used with the other documented bot-add forms where supported. Valve’s command behavior can change between builds, so query the running server for the current syntax and accepted values rather than relying on a list copied from an older release. In the console, begin typing the command and use its help output or autocomplete to inspect the available arguments.
Control the number of bots with bot_quota
bot_quota is the server convar that sets the bot population target. The current CS2OpenDev convar reference lists a default value of 10. The meaning of that number depends on bot_quota_mode; changing the mode is often the difference between getting the expected count and seeing bots appear or disappear.

Fill open places with a fixed match size
To keep five total players in the match, issue both convars:

bot_quota 5
bot_quota_mode fillWith fill, five does not mean five bots. It means five players altogether. If two humans are present, the server targets three bots; when more humans connect, it removes bots as necessary to preserve the target. This is the appropriate setup for keeping a practice match populated without exceeding a chosen player count.
Maintain a human-to-bot ratio
Set the mode to match when the target should scale with human participation. Because the server is maintaining a ratio rather than a fixed bot total, the number of visible bots is expected to change when players connect or disconnect.
Use a fixed bot target
Use normal when the number represents bots themselves. For example:
bot_quota 10
bot_quota_mode normalThis targets ten bots, subject to available slots, team restrictions, and the active mode. A server with fewer usable slots cannot create more players than the mode and map permit.

Remove bots or alter the setup
Kick every bot
Run:
bot_kickThe command removes bots currently managed by the server. If a quota mode is still active, the server can immediately add replacements. To keep the match empty, change or clear the population convars after kicking the bots.

Kick only matching bots
The documented bot_kick syntax supports filters for team, bot type, difficulty, and name. Use the command help on the running CS2 build to see the exact filter order and accepted values, then apply the narrowest filter that matches your goal. This avoids removing every bot when you only need to clear one team or one named bot.
One-off console commands versus persistent configuration

For a dedicated server, put the desired bot_quota and bot_quota_mode values in the configuration that the active instance actually loads. Execute them after the game-mode configuration if that configuration can override bot settings. Some hosts require a restart or level change before edits are read.
Dedicated-server setup procedure
1. Identify the instance you are changing
Verify the server address, instance, active map, and game mode. Editing a file for a different instance or map produces no change in the match you are watching.
2. Choose an administration path
- Provider console: use the host’s live command console if one is supplied.
- RCON: send commands through an authenticated RCON connection configured for that server.
- Server process console: enter commands where the dedicated server process accepts them.
- Persistent configuration: place the convars in the server configuration or startup mechanism that the host documents for the active instance.
These paths are functionally equivalent only when they target the same running server and have sufficient permissions. A command entered into your local CS2 console while merely connected as a player is not a substitute for RCON or the provider console.
3. Apply the population settings
For a five-player fill setup, execute:
bot_quota 5
bot_quota_mode fillFor a fixed ten-bot target, execute:
bot_quota 10
bot_quota_mode normalUse the values appropriate to your match rather than copying these examples blindly. If the server’s game-mode configuration runs after your settings, it may replace them; move the commands later in the startup sequence or into the configuration loaded last.

4. Reload when the host requires it
Restart the server or change the level if the provider says configuration files are read only at startup or level load. After the reload, check the active convars and observe whether bots are created, removed, or replenished as expected.

Local listen server or dedicated server?

Troubleshoot bots that do not behave as expected
No bot appears after bot_add
- Confirm the command reached the server that is running the map. On a remote server, check the provider console, RCON response, or server log rather than only your client console.
- Try
bot_add_torbot_add_ctto test a specific team. - Check the active game mode, team capacity, and map navigation data. The current mode may prevent the requested bot from spawning.
- Use the running build’s command help if the server reports an unknown command or rejects an argument.
Bots keep returning after you kick them
Inspect bot_quota and bot_quota_mode. A nonzero quota with fill or match is designed to replenish bots when the population falls below its target. Change the quota or mode first, then run bot_kick if you want the current bots removed immediately.
The server has the wrong number of bots
Determine whether the quota is counting bots, total players, or a human-to-bot ratio. In fill, five means five players total; in normal, five means five bots; in match, the result varies with human participation. Also account for unavailable slots and team restrictions.
Settings reset after a restart
Move the convars from a temporary console session into the persistent configuration or startup mechanism for the active dedicated-server instance. If the host requires a restart or level change to reload that file, perform it and verify the values afterward.
The console says a command is unknown
Check spelling and run the command’s help output on the current CS2 build. Command behavior and accepted optional arguments can change, so a syntax example from an older build may no longer apply. The maintained CS2OpenDev command reference is useful for cross-checking the convar name, but the running server’s own help is the final check for what it accepts.

Quick local practice with a team-specific opponent
- Enable and open the developer console.
- Start the practice map and confirm that you are hosting the session.
- Run
bot_add_ctorbot_add_t, depending on the side you want to test. - Repeat the command for additional individual bots.
Keep five total players while friends join
- Send
bot_quota 5to the server. - Send
bot_quota_mode fill. - Let the server adjust the bot count as humans connect or disconnect.
Clear the match before changing teams
- Change the quota or quota mode so the server is not immediately trying to refill slots.
- Run
bot_kick. - Add only the required side with
bot_add_torbot_add_ct.
Verify the final state
After applying a setup, verify three things separately: the command was executed by the correct server, the active map and mode allow bots, and the population mode matches what you intended the number to mean. For a dedicated server, also confirm that the values survive a restart or level change. This verification catches the most common mismatch: a syntactically correct command sent to the wrong console, followed by a quota mode that intentionally changes the bot count.
