BattlEye Extended Controls (BEC) is Windows server software that administers an Arma 3 dedicated server through BattlEye RCon. It is not a client-side mod. To set it up, enable BattlEye RCon first, place BEC on the same Windows machine (or another machine that can reach the RCon port), point Config.cfg at the active BattlEye directory, and start it with Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc. Administrator accounts, command permissions, logs, filters, and restart warnings are then configured in their own files.

What BEC does—and what it does not do

BEC is a server-side control layer for BattlEye-protected Arma 3 servers. It connects to BattlEye’s RCon interface and automates tasks that the game server does not conveniently provide through its normal console: remote administration, scheduled messages, shutdown warnings, restart routines, chat and event logging, name and word filtering, anti-spam controls, lobby-idle kicks, slot limits, and whitelists.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Players do not install BEC. The only required installation is on the Windows machine running the dedicated server, or on a separate Windows machine that can reach the server’s RCon endpoint. BEC cannot replace BattlEye; BattlEye must be operating and accepting RCon connections before BEC can connect.

The original developer’s official support and hosting ended in 2014. Current distributions are unofficial community forks, so file names, XML options, and supported Windows versions can differ. Use the sample files shipped with the fork you selected, verify its integrity, and test it against your current Arma 3 and BattlEye build before putting it into production.

Prerequisites and a safe installation plan

  • A Windows Arma 3 dedicated server with BattlEye enabled.
  • Administrator access to the server machine, or to the Windows account that owns the server files and starts BEC.
  • The active BattlEye directory and the exact BattlEye configuration file used by the running instance.
  • An RCon password and an unused RCon port that is reachable from the BEC process.
  • A community BEC distribution containing Bec.exe, Config.cfg, and the sample administration, command, and scheduler files.
  • A backup of the working server directory before changing BattlEye or BEC settings.

Keep the server, BattlEye, and BEC paths simple and permanent. Do not install BEC in a temporary download directory, and do not let a hosting panel silently move the BattlEye folder after you configure BePath. If BEC runs on another machine, replace the loopback address with the server’s reachable address and restrict the RCon port with a firewall rule or private network.

Self-hosting versus managed hosting

BEC is easiest when you control the Windows file system and process that launches the Arma 3 server. A managed provider can remove some operating-system work, but the provider must explicitly permit BEC and BattlEye RCon access; many panels hide or regenerate these files.

Consideration Self-hosted Windows server Managed game hosting
Windows availability You choose the Windows edition and updates. Depends on the provider’s supported operating systems and game image.
BattlEye/RCon access You can set the RCon password and port directly. Confirm that RCon is enabled and that external or additional processes may connect.
File-path control Full control over BePath, XML files, logs, and working directory. Paths may be fixed, virtualized, or changed by the panel.
Restart scheduling Use BEC’s scheduler and Windows task or service tools. The panel may provide its own restart system; avoid running two competing schedulers.
Support burden You diagnose Windows, BattlEye, RCon, and BEC. The provider may support the server but not an unofficial BEC fork.
Backups You define and test backups of configuration, bans, and logs. Check what is backed up and whether BEC files are included.
Program availability You can install a compatible community build after checking its files. Verify that the host allows the specific executable and persistent working directory.

Step 1: identify the active BattlEye directory

Arma 3 installations commonly contain a BattlEye folder beside the server executable, but a startup parameter or hosting panel can select another location. The only directory that matters is the one used by the running server process. Check the server’s startup command, panel settings, and latest BattlEye log rather than assuming the first folder you find is active.

On a 64-bit Arma 3 server, the active file is often named BEServer_x64.cfg; older or differently packaged installations may use BEServer.cfg. Do not maintain conflicting RCon settings in both files and then guess which one BattlEye read. Edit the file that the running instance actually loads.

Step 2: enable and test BattlEye RCon

In the active BattlEye directory, create or edit the server configuration with an RCon password and port. The essential entries are:

RConPassword replace-with-a-long-unique-password
RConPort 2310

2310 is only an example. Choose a free port appropriate to your machine and firewall policy. The password is case-sensitive and must later match the value BEC uses. RCon is separate from the game’s player connection port, so do not automatically reuse the game port.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Create an empty bans.txt in that same active BattlEye directory if it does not already exist. BEC distributions commonly expect the file at startup, and a missing bans file is a documented cause of failure. Preserve any existing bans file; do not replace it with a blank file.

Restart the Arma 3 server after changing BattlEye settings, then inspect its BattlEye output for a successful RCon bind. If the port is already in use, select another port and update both the BattlEye file and BEC configuration. If a firewall is enabled, allow the chosen port only from the BEC host or trusted administration network.

Step 3: install BEC on the server machine

Download a maintained community BEC fork from a reputable project page and compare the archive contents with the project’s release notes. Because official support ended, check the fork’s Windows requirements, recent issue history, and whether its executable is compatible with your current BattlEye protocol. Keep the archive and a checksum outside the live directory so you can identify exactly what was installed.

Extract BEC to a dedicated folder, for example C:Arma3BEC. A practical layout is:

C:Arma3BECBec.exe
C:Arma3BECConfig.cfg
C:Arma3BECAdmins.xml
C:Arma3BECCommands.xml
C:Arma3BECScheduler.xml
C:Arma3BECLogs

You can place the XML files in subdirectories, but every path in Config.cfg must then be changed to match. Run BEC with a Windows account that can read the BattlEye directory and write its log directory.

Step 4: configure Config.cfg

Open the sample configuration supplied by your fork and set the connection and file paths. A typical configuration uses entries like these; retain the exact section names and optional keys from your fork’s sample:

[Bec]
Ip = 127.0.0.1
Port = 2310
Password = replace-with-a-long-unique-password
BePath = C:Arma3serverBattlEye
Admins = Admins.xml
Commands = Commands.xml
Scheduler = Scheduler.xml
LogDir = Logs
Setting What to enter Common mistake
Ip 127.0.0.1 when BEC and Arma 3 share a machine; otherwise the server address reachable by BEC. Using a public address for a same-machine connection and then blocking the connection with the firewall.
Port The exact number after RConPort in the active BattlEye file. Using the game port or leaving an old sample port unchanged.
Password The exact value after RConPassword. Invisible whitespace, different capitalization, or a password copied from another server.
BePath The full path to the active BattlEye folder, not the Arma 3 root and not the BEC folder. Pointing at a second BattlEye directory that the server never loads.
XML and log paths Valid paths to Admins.xml, Commands.xml, Scheduler.xml, and the log directory. Relative paths resolving from a different working directory than expected.

Use fully qualified Windows paths while troubleshooting. If a path contains spaces, follow the quoting convention in the fork’s sample file. Keep the password out of screenshots, public repositories, and shared batch files. If BEC is on a different host, never expose RCon to the entire internet merely to make the connection work.

Step 5: start BEC with the documented flags

Open Command Prompt in the BEC directory and run:

Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc

The -f Config.cfg argument explicitly selects the configuration file, while --dsc is included in the community launch instructions. Starting from the BEC working directory helps relative XML and log paths resolve consistently.

For repeatable starts, create StartBEC.bat beside Bec.exe:

@echo off
cd /d C:Arma3BEC
Bec.exe -f Config.cfg --dsc

Use the same command in a shortcut’s target field or in a Windows task that starts after the server. Set the shortcut or task’s “Start in” directory to the BEC folder. If the Arma 3 server itself is launched by a panel or service, make sure BEC starts only after BattlEye has created its live files; otherwise BEC may report a missing file or refuse the RCon connection. Keep the BEC console and first log open during the initial test.

Step 6: define administrators and command permissions

Admins.xml identifies trusted administrators and assigns them to groups. Commands.xml maps command groups to the operations those groups may run. Use the XML templates supplied with your fork because identifier formats and element names are not identical across community versions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Make a backup copy of the sample files before editing.
  2. Add one test administrator using the identity format documented by the fork, commonly a BattlEye or player identifier rather than a display name.
  3. Assign that identity to a narrowly scoped group first. Grant broad commands only after the connection and audit trail work.
  4. Define which commands each group may use in Commands.xml; do not assume that membership alone grants every command.
  5. Restart BEC after XML changes unless the fork documents live reload, then test a harmless command and confirm it appears in the log.

Display names can change and can be duplicated, so they are a poor sole identity. Treat the administrator file as a credential list: restrict filesystem permissions, remove former staff promptly, and keep a dated backup. Never paste real passwords or identifiers into public support posts.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Step 7: turn on logs, filters, and server protections

BEC can write chat and event logs and can apply name filters, word filters, anti-spam rules, lobby-idle kicking, slot limits, and whitelists. Enable only the controls you understand, then test them with a private player or test session. Overly broad word filters can block legitimate usernames or mission text; aggressive anti-spam settings can punish scripted mission messages.

Choose a log directory on a volume with sufficient space. Rotate or archive logs so a busy server does not fill the disk. Restrict access because chat and administrative logs can contain player identifiers and staff actions. When investigating a kick or command failure, record the UTC time, player identity, BEC log entry, and corresponding BattlEye log entry before deleting or rotating files.

Using 2 holes wire tray saves extra space, helps you easily cabling and wire protection. The mesh design is not easy to accumulate dust, but avoids safety accidents caused by messy wires.

Step 8: schedule warnings and restarts with Scheduler.xml

The scheduler file controls automated messages and shutdown or restart warnings. Start from the sample Scheduler.xml shipped with your fork rather than inventing a new XML schema. Add a sequence of announcements that gives players time to finish a mission, followed by the shutdown or restart action supported by your server setup.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Copy the sample scheduler file and confirm BEC can read it with no XML syntax errors.
  2. Set the schedule’s times and recurrence according to the fork’s documented format, including its timezone convention.
  3. Add several warnings—for example, a notice well before the event, then shorter intervals as the restart approaches.
  4. Use the exact shutdown or restart command expected by your Arma 3 server or hosting panel. Do not run both BEC and a panel scheduler for the same event.
  5. Test the schedule during a maintenance window. Verify that messages reach the server, the final action occurs, and the server starts again with BattlEye and BEC in the intended order.

Do not treat sample times or paths as universal defaults. Daylight-saving changes, the host’s timezone, and a panel’s restart policy can shift the observed time. Put the timezone and next planned restart in your staff documentation.

Verify the complete connection

A successful BEC console window alone is not enough. Verify the entire chain:

  • The Arma 3 server is running with BattlEye enabled.
  • The active BattlEye file contains the expected RCon port and password.
  • bans.txt exists in that same BattlEye directory.
  • BEC’s Ip, Port, Password, and BePath match the live server.
  • BEC loads each XML file and creates its log output.
  • A test administrator can authenticate and run one permitted, non-destructive command.
  • A test chat message or event appears in the expected log.
  • A temporary scheduler entry produces a warning, then is removed or replaced with the real schedule.

After testing, stop BEC cleanly, restore the intended schedule, and document the launch command, paths, RCon port, backup location, and the person responsible for credential rotation.

Troubleshooting BEC startup and RCon connections

Symptom Likely cause Fix
BEC reports that a bans file is missing. bans.txt is absent from the active BattlEye directory. Create the file there, preserve its permissions, and restart BEC.
BEC cannot connect. Wrong BePath, port, password, address, firewall rule, or BattlEye instance. Compare every value character-for-character, confirm the server is listening on the RCon port, and test locally with 127.0.0.1 when appropriate.
Connection works only when launched manually. The batch file or shortcut has the wrong working directory or a relative path. Use cd /d, set “Start in” to the BEC folder, and use absolute paths while diagnosing.
XML settings are ignored. Malformed XML, wrong file path, or an option unsupported by the selected fork. Restore the fork’s sample, validate one change at a time, and read the BEC startup log for the file it loaded.
Administrators authenticate but commands fail. The identity is in the wrong group or the command is not permitted in Commands.xml. Check group membership and command permissions, then restart BEC if the fork does not support reload.
Scheduled messages appear at the wrong time. Timezone, daylight-saving, or scheduler-format mismatch. Confirm the host timezone and the fork’s scheduler convention; test a near-future entry before restoring the recurring schedule.
BEC works until the server restarts. BEC is not launched again, or it starts before BattlEye is ready. Use a batch file, shortcut, task, or service with a deliberate startup order and verify the post-restart logs.

Security and maintenance checklist

  • Use a unique, long RCon password and rotate it when an administrator leaves.
  • Expose the RCon port only to the BEC host or a trusted management network.
  • Keep BEC, Arma 3, and BattlEye under separate backup routines so an update can be rolled back.
  • Review the community fork’s release notes before replacing Bec.exe; keep the previous executable until the new one passes a test restart.
  • Back up Admins.xml, Commands.xml, Scheduler.xml, bans, and filters, but store credentials separately from general server backups.
  • Monitor disk space for BEC and BattlEye logs and archive them on a defined retention schedule.
  • Re-test RCon, an administrator command, filters, and a scheduled warning after every BattlEye, Arma 3, Windows, or hosting-panel change.

When the path, credentials, and launch order are correct, BEC remains a small, predictable control process: BattlEye supplies the RCon endpoint, BEC supplies administration and automation, and the separate XML files define who may act and when the server should warn or restart.
