Set up protection in three places: your bank or credit union for transaction and account-change notifications, your mobile carrier for SIM-swap and number-port-out controls, and one national credit bureau for a free fraud alert if your identity information may be exposed. Use only the institution’s official app or a website address you type yourself. Treat any unexpected call or text claiming to be a fraud department as untrusted until you independently verify it.
Start with the three protection layers
These controls address different attack paths, so a bank notification does not replace a carrier lock or a credit-file alert. Complete the following in order, then record which settings you enabled and when you reviewed them.
- Bank or credit union: Open the official mobile app or type the institution’s web address yourself. Find Alerts, Notifications, or Security settings and turn on every relevant transaction and account-change alert.
- Mobile carrier: In the carrier’s official app or website, look for Account security, SIM protection, Number lock, Port-out protection, or a similarly named control. Availability depends on the carrier, plan, and account role.
- Credit file: If you suspect identity theft or an exposure of your personal information, place an initial fraud alert with any one of Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion. The bureau you contact must notify the other two.
- Safe response: If an alert arrives, do not use a phone number, link, or verification code supplied by an inbound caller or text. Open the official app or use the number printed on your statement.
Configure bank and credit-union alerts
Menu names differ by institution and account type. The Federal Reserve’s interagency guidance treats transaction alerts as a customer mechanism for monitoring activity and recommends that institutions explain how customers should report suspicious transactions. Look for the closest matching setting rather than assuming your bank uses the exact labels below.

- Debit-card purchases and withdrawals
- Credit-card purchases, cash advances, and payment activity
- Automated Clearing House (ACH) debits and credits
- Wire transfers
- Large or unusual transactions, if the institution offers thresholds
- New payees, external-account links, or transfers, when available
Choose delivery to a device or email address you control. Push notifications are usually the quickest, while email provides a searchable record. If the app lets you set a dollar threshold, use a low enough amount to catch test charges; a threshold that is too high can miss a small unauthorized transaction.
Enable account-change and access alerts
Transaction alerts can miss an attacker who is preparing an account takeover. Also enable notifications for:
- Logins from a new device or unusual location
- Password changes and password-reset requests
- Changes to your phone number, email address, mailing address, or other profile details
- New device enrollment, trusted-device changes, or security-question changes
- New beneficiaries, linked accounts, or payment methods
Some institutions group these controls under Security alerts rather than Notifications. Check both sections. If you maintain separate personal, joint, business, savings, and card profiles, review each profile; enabling alerts on one does not necessarily cover the others.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteVerify delivery and reporting instructions
After saving the settings, confirm that the app shows them as active and that the destination address or phone number is correct. Do not use a real transfer as a test. Instead, ask the institution whether it offers a notification test or wait for a normal, authorized transaction and confirm that the alert identifies the account, amount, merchant or recipient, and time.
Save the institution’s official fraud-reporting number from your statement or from inside the authenticated app. The Federal Reserve guidance emphasizes explaining reporting contacts because speed matters: an alert is useful only if you know where to report an event and can reach that channel without relying on a suspicious message.

Lock down your mobile number against SIM swaps and port-outs
A criminal who takes control of your phone number can receive one-time codes and reset links for other accounts. Carrier controls either warn you about a change or block the change until you deliberately unlock it. Sign in through the carrier’s official app or by typing its website address; do not follow a link in an unsolicited text.
Verizon: Number Lock and SIM Protection
Verizon documents two separate controls. Number Lock blocks moving your mobile number to another carrier while it is turned on; it must be turned off before an authorized transfer. SIM Protection blocks unauthorized SIM or device changes. If both settings are offered for your line, enable both and check whether each line on a family or multi-line account must be configured separately.
Recommended Free Tools
Read the confirmation screen carefully. A number lock can prevent a legitimate port when you change carriers, so plan to unlock it yourself through the authenticated account only when you have initiated that move.
T-Mobile: SIM Protection eligibility
T-Mobile says eligible postpaid customers can enable SIM Protection after signing in. Its support guidance excludes T-Mobile Business, Prepaid, and Metro by T-Mobile accounts. If you do not see the setting, first verify the account type and your permissions as an account holder or authorized user; the absence of the menu does not prove that the line is unprotected.
Ask the carrier what alternative account-security measures apply to an excluded plan. Do not attempt to activate a feature by calling a number supplied in an unexpected message.

AT&T: Wireless Account Lock
AT&T documents a free Wireless Account Lock. When enabled, it blocks SIM or eSIM swaps and transfers to or from another carrier. The support page was last updated April 12, 2026. Check the account’s security area for the lock status and confirm whether every line and authorized user is covered.
Because a lock can stop a legitimate upgrade, replacement, or port, learn the carrier’s official unlock process before an emergency. Keep the account credentials and recovery methods current so you can remove the lock yourself when necessary.
Check carrier notifications as well as blocking controls
Blocking is stronger than a warning, but enable carrier notifications for SIM changes, eSIM downloads, device changes, password resets, and account-profile edits whenever they are offered. A notification can reveal an attempted takeover even when a lock stopped the action. Review the alert destination after changing your phone number or email address.
Place a free fraud alert on your credit file
A credit-file fraud alert is for prospective creditors. It tells a lender or other company that checks your report to take reasonable steps to verify your identity before opening new credit. It does not monitor bank transactions and it does not freeze access to your credit report.
- Choose Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion and use that bureau’s official fraud-alert process.
- Provide the identity information and contact details the bureau requests.
- Keep the confirmation and note the start and expiration dates.
- Verify that the bureau you contacted confirms it will notify the other two bureaus.
An initial alert is free and lasts one year; it can be renewed. The one-year term is the Federal Trade Commission’s current consumer guidance. If you are an active-duty service member or have documented identity-theft circumstances, ask the bureau whether a different alert category applies; eligibility and duration can differ.

After placing the alert, inspect your credit reports for unfamiliar inquiries or accounts and dispute items through the appropriate bureau. A fraud alert is not a substitute for a credit freeze when you want to block most access to your reports. A freeze is a separate control with its own enrollment and temporary-lift process.
What each control monitors and what it can do
| Control | Monitors | Notification speed | Warns or blocks | Cost and duration | Eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Bank or credit-union alerts | Transactions and account or profile changes | Usually near real time for push alerts; timing depends on the institution | Primarily warns; some institutions may offer separate transaction holds | Usually included with the account; duration and alert retention vary by provider | Varies by institution, account type, and available alert categories |
| Carrier SIM, number, or account lock | SIM/eSIM changes, device changes, and number transfers | Blocking occurs at the attempted change; notifications depend on the carrier | Can block an action until you unlock it | Verizon features and AT&T Wireless Account Lock are documented by those carriers; AT&T describes its lock as free. Terms and persistence are carrier-specific | Depends on carrier, plan type, line, and account role. T-Mobile’s documented SIM Protection excludes Business, Prepaid, and Metro by T-Mobile |
| Initial credit-file fraud alert | Applications for new credit that use your report | Acts when a creditor accesses the report; it is not a transaction alert | Warns creditors to verify identity; it does not freeze the report | Free; one year, renewable, under current FTC guidance | Available through any one of Equifax, Experian, or TransUnion, which must notify the other two |
| Credit-monitoring service | Changes reported to the monitored credit file | Depends on the service’s update cycle | Warns; it does not block bank withdrawals or tax-refund fraud | Terms vary by service | Optional; coverage varies |
Do bank notifications replace a credit alert?
No. Bank alerts cover activity inside the account: a debit, ACH entry, wire, login, password reset, or contact change. A credit-file alert addresses a different event: someone applying for a new loan, card, or other credit in your name. Carrier controls address control of the phone number that may be used to reset either type of account.
Credit monitoring is also narrower than many people expect. The FTC says monitoring will not alert you when someone withdraws money from your bank account or when someone uses your Social Security number to file a tax return and collect your refund. Keep bank alerts enabled even if you subscribe to monitoring.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Respond safely when an alert arrives
An unexpected call or text that claims to be from a bank, carrier, or fraud department can be an impersonation scam. A caller may know your name or the last four digits of an account; that does not authenticate the caller.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →- Do not share a one-time passcode, password, PIN, security answer, or recovery code. The FTC’s 2024 consumer alert states: “Never share a verification code. Ever.”
- Do not install software, grant screen-sharing access, or move a conversation to a private messaging app at the caller’s request.
- Do not move or transfer money to a so-called safe account. The FTC states: “Never move or transfer your money to ‘protect it.’”
- End the conversation. Open the official app yourself or call the number on your statement, card, or carrier bill.
- Review recent transactions, login history, profile changes, and carrier activity from the authenticated account.
If the alert is unauthorized, follow the institution’s fraud-reporting procedure immediately. Ask whether the account, card, SIM, or number should be temporarily blocked, and document the case number and time of your report. Change compromised credentials from a trusted device and review other accounts that used the same password or phone number for recovery.

When an alert or lock is missing
The menu label is different
Search the signed-in help area for alerts, notifications, security, SIM, port, number lock, or account lock. Banks and carriers do not use a universal menu structure. An institution may place transaction alerts under each individual account, while security alerts live under your profile.
Your plan or role is not eligible
Carrier features can depend on prepaid versus postpaid service, business versus consumer ownership, the number of lines, and whether you are the primary account holder. T-Mobile’s stated exclusions are a concrete example. Ask support, through a trusted channel, which control applies to your plan and what documentation an authorized user needs.
Alerts arrive late or not at all
Confirm that push notifications are allowed in the phone’s operating-system settings, that the email address is verified, and that messages are not being filtered. Check whether the institution batches low-value transactions or sends an alert only after a transaction posts. Keep a second delivery method when available, but never route security codes to a shared or abandoned mailbox.
You cannot unlock a legitimate transfer
A carrier lock is doing its job when it stops a port or SIM change. Start the unlock from the authenticated account or the carrier’s published support path, and make sure the requested transfer is truly yours. If you are locked out, use the carrier’s documented identity-verification and account-recovery process rather than responding to an inbound caller offering to fix it.
Maintenance checklist
Protection decays when contact details, devices, and plans change. Review these items after a phone replacement, a change of bank or carrier, a new joint account, or any suspected exposure.
- Confirm bank alerts cover every account, card, and transaction type you use.
- Remove old phone numbers and email addresses from alert destinations and recovery profiles.
- Check that carrier locks remain enabled on each line and that you know the official unlock procedure.
- Review the authorized-user list on bank and carrier accounts.
- Recheck your credit-file alert’s expiration date and renew it when appropriate.
- Test that you can reach each institution through a statement number or authenticated app without using an unsolicited message.
- Use unique passwords and multifactor authentication where offered; protect the email account that receives financial alerts.
The practical goal is layered visibility and control: bank alerts expose account activity, carrier locks reduce the chance that a criminal captures your recovery number, and a credit-file alert makes new-credit applications more likely to receive identity verification. None of the layers eliminates the need to review alerts and report suspicious activity promptly.
