The safest automatic-update routine for a V Rising dedicated server is a controlled sequence: announce maintenance through RCON, wait for players to leave dangerous areas, stop the server, run SteamCMD with AppID 1829350, then start the server again. On Windows, a batch file launched by Task Scheduler can run that sequence every day. In a container, use the image’s documented automatic-update mode, enable RCON for graceful shutdown, and keep saves on a persistent volume.
This approach avoids updating files while the server is writing them and gives players a predictable warning instead of an unexplained disconnect.

What the update routine must do
V Rising’s dedicated-server files are delivered through SteamCMD. Stunlock Studios identifies the dedicated-server Steam AppID as 1829350 and says the download script should be run again while the server is offline to verify and update the latest files. Steam Support describes SteamCMD as the command-line tool for downloading and updating standalone dedicated servers.
An unattended job therefore needs to perform these actions in order:

- Send an in-game maintenance announcement over RCON.
- Wait long enough for the warning to be useful.
- Stop the server cleanly and allow its process to exit.
- Run SteamCMD against AppID
1829350with validation enabled. - Wait for the update process and file handles to finish.
- Start the server and confirm that it is accepting connections.
Do not run SteamCMD against an active installation. Updating while the server is running can leave a mixed set of binaries or interrupt writes to save data. Stunlock’s guidance specifically describes updating with the server offline.
Choose an installation pattern
The exact automation depends on where the server runs. The two common patterns are a Windows service controlled by a script and a container whose image watches for Steam updates.

If you already have a Windows service, the batch-file method is transparent and easy to test. A container is convenient when your deployment already uses persistent volumes and you prefer the image to detect updates rather than restarting at a fixed time.
Prerequisites before automating anything
- A working V Rising dedicated server that you can stop and start manually.
- SteamCMD installed on the host, with its executable path known.
- The server’s Steam installation directory and the account or service identity that owns it.
- RCON enabled in the V Rising server configuration, with the RCON host, port and password recorded securely.
- An RCON client such as
mcrconinstalled where the script can execute it. - A service manager or start/stop commands. The illustrative Windows example uses
nssm.exe, but your installation may use a different service name or manager. - A persistent location for save files and settings that should survive replacement of installation files.
- A maintenance window long enough for the warning, shutdown, download and startup. The sample waits 10 minutes for players, 60 seconds for shutdown and five minutes after SteamCMD; the actual update can take longer.
Run the server manually once after enabling RCON. From the host, verify that an RCON client can connect and that a harmless command produces an in-game response. An unattended task cannot repair an incorrect port, password or firewall rule.
Enable and verify RCON warnings
RCON is the control channel that lets your update job communicate with connected players before stopping the process. Enable it using the server’s configuration procedure, then test the same host, port and credentials that the scheduled script will use.

The community automation example sends:
mcrcon.exe -H 127.0.0.1 -P YOUR_RCON_PORT -p YOUR_RCON_PASSWORD "announcerestart 10"announcerestart 10 tells players that a restart is planned in 10 minutes. The command is useful because it puts the warning in the game rather than relying on a message outside the server. If your RCON client or server build uses a different syntax, use the syntax documented for that client; do not assume that a shell command succeeded merely because it returned to the prompt.
A good announcement should answer three questions:
- When: give the countdown and, where practical, the expected clock time in the server’s local timezone.
- How long: state that the server will be unavailable during the update and that download time varies.
- What players should do: ask them to leave combat, move out of hazardous locations and avoid starting activities that cannot be safely interrupted.
An official V Rising announcement described maintenance messaging that told players to get to safety before a restart. Treat that as a safety requirement, not just a courtesy: a sudden stop can strand characters in a dangerous situation.
Build the Windows update script
Use the correct order
Save the following as update.bat on the server host. Replace the RCON values and executable locations with the paths used by your installation. The service name in the example is only an example; substitute the name registered on your machine.

What each line does

Use absolute paths if Task Scheduler will not inherit the same working directory as your interactive command prompt. For example, call the full path to steamcmd.exe, mcrcon.exe and the service manager rather than relying on the system PATH.

Adjust the waits from observation
The sample contains 600 seconds for the player warning, 60 seconds for shutdown and 300 seconds after the update. Those values produce a minimum of 16 minutes plus the SteamCMD download and server startup time from the moment the warning is sent. Measure your own shutdown and startup behavior and alter the waits when necessary. A large world, a slow disk or a first-time download can require more time; a short shutdown does not make it safe to remove the stop wait entirely.
Protect the credentials
The command-line example includes the RCON password so that the sequence is clear, but a plain-text batch file is readable by anyone who can open it. Store the file with permissions limited to the account that runs the server and the administrators who maintain it. If your RCON client supports a protected configuration or another credential mechanism, use it instead of exposing the password in the process command line. Keep RCON restricted to the management network or local host unless remote access is genuinely required, and apply an appropriate firewall rule.
Keep saves and durable settings outside update-prone files
SteamCMD can replace files in the installation tree. The automation guidance distinguishes those update-prone files from save-data settings intended to survive updates. Put world saves and any configuration that must persist in the installation’s documented persistent-data location, and ensure the service starts with that location selected.
Before the first unattended run:
- Locate the current save files and copy them to the persistent location expected by your server setup.
- Identify which settings are durable data and which are runtime files regenerated by the server.
- After an update, verify that the service still points to the same save location.
- Keep a dated backup before a major game update so that an unexpected configuration change does not become data loss.
If settings appear to revert after an update, the usual cause is that the durable files were left inside a directory replaced by SteamCMD, or that the service is starting with a different data path. Move the durable files, then copy only the runtime settings that your installation explicitly requires into the active directory.
Schedule the script with Windows Task Scheduler
- Run
update.batmanually from an administrator command prompt while you can watch the server, RCON message and SteamCMD output. - Open Task Scheduler and choose Create Task, not merely the basic wizard, so that you can set the run identity and failure behavior.
- On the General tab, give the task a name such as V Rising scheduled update. Select an account that can stop and start the service and read the SteamCMD and server directories. Use Run whether user is logged on or not when the host is unattended, and enable elevated privileges if your service requires them.
- On Triggers, create a Daily trigger at a low-usage time. The installer example uses 09:00; choose a time that matches your players’ timezone and activity pattern. A fixed daily trigger means the server may restart even when SteamCMD reports no changes.
- On Actions, choose Start a program, browse to the full path of
update.bat, and set Start in to the directory that contains the script and any relative files it calls. - On Conditions, clear power-related restrictions that would prevent the job on a server that is normally unattended. Do not enable a condition that silently skips the maintenance window you selected.
- On Settings, enable Allow task to be run on demand, choose a sensible behavior if the task is already running, and configure a time limit only if you have a recovery plan for a slow download.
- Save the task, enter the service account credentials if Windows requests them, and use Run once from Task Scheduler. Confirm that the warning appears, the service stops, SteamCMD finishes and the service returns online.
Keep the task history enabled and retain the console or log output produced by your server and SteamCMD. If the task fails, the exact stage—RCON, stop, update or start—is more useful than a generic “task failed” notification.

Container deployments: automatic update mode
Didstopia’s container README documents an automatic-update mode that watches for a Steam update, restarts the server when an update is detected and then triggers the update. The image also expects RCON to be enabled so it can send shutdown commands cleanly.
Configure the image’s documented update-mode variable exactly as described by that image version. Because variable names and defaults are image-specific, do not copy a variable name from an unrelated container. Persist the save-data volume outside the container’s writable layer so that recreating or updating the container does not remove the world.

- Confirm that the container can reach Steam and that its update mode is enabled.
- Enable RCON and test that the container can send a shutdown command to the server.
- Mount the persistent save-data volume and verify that a restart leaves the same world available.
- Read the container logs during a controlled update and confirm that the old process exits before new files are installed.
- Check that the container returns to a healthy running state and that players can reconnect.
Unlike a fixed Windows schedule, update-triggered mode may leave the server running indefinitely when no new Steam build is detected. That reduces unnecessary restarts, but it also means you should understand how the image detects updates and how it reports a failed update.

Choose the schedule from actual player activity, not simply from the host’s local clock. Publish the timezone and the expected downtime in your server rules or community channel, then repeat the information in the in-game warning.

The 10-minute example is a practical minimum for a small server, but it is not universal. If players need more time to return from distant areas or the server takes several minutes to stop, announce earlier. Conversely, do not promise that the server will be back exactly when the countdown ends: SteamCMD download time and startup time depend on the files that changed and the host.
Use wording that distinguishes the warning from the actual stop, for example:
Maintenance restart in 10 minutes. Save your work, leave combat, and move to safety. Expected downtime: the update plus server startup.Send the warning through RCON before the stop command, not after the service has already begun shutting down. If players report that they never see it, treat that as a failed precondition and do not rely on the schedule until RCON connectivity is fixed.
Test the complete sequence before enabling a daily trigger
Run the batch file interactively during a period when you can intervene. The goal is to prove the whole chain, not merely that SteamCMD can download files.
- Warning test: confirm that connected players see the announcement and that the command returns an expected response.
- Shutdown test: watch the service stop and verify that the server process exits before SteamCMD starts.
- Update test: read SteamCMD output. “No changes” means the installed files are already current; it does not mean the script should skip a controlled restart if your schedule requires one.
- Persistence test: after startup, confirm that the same world, settings and administrator permissions are present.
- Reconnect test: join the server from a client and check that normal gameplay works.
- Failure test: deliberately use an incorrect RCON value in a copy of the script or stop the service manually, then verify that the failure is visible in task history and logs rather than silently continuing.
The sources do not define a universal test duration. Keep observing until your own server has completed a full stop, update check and restart successfully, then enable the recurring trigger.
Troubleshooting common failures

- Shutdown and startup waits reflect measurements from this server.
- Saves and durable settings are on persistent storage.
- The update account can read and write the installation and control the service.
- Credentials and script permissions prevent ordinary users from reading the RCON password.
- The complete batch or container sequence has been run manually.
- Task Scheduler or the container scheduler records logs that an administrator can review.
Which approach fits your server?
Use the Windows script when you want a fixed maintenance window, direct control of every wait and a deployment that already runs as a Windows service. Use a container’s automatic-update mode when your server is already containerized, your save volume is persistent and you prefer updates to trigger restarts only when a new Steam build is detected. In either case, RCON warnings and persistent data are the safeguards that protect players and their world; SteamCMD is the update mechanism, not the scheduling or communication layer.
