Use RocketModFix’s Rocket.AutoInstaller module. Stop the Unturned server, remove any old Modules/Rocket.Unturned folder, download Rocket.AutoInstaller.zip from the RocketModFix releases, extract the Rocket.AutoInstaller folder into your server’s Modules directory, and restart the server. RocketModFix describes this as a restart-triggered updater: future RocketMod updates are applied when the server starts again, not while the process is running.
Back up the world, configuration, plugins, and current RocketMod module before changing anything. The original RocketMod project was discontinued in December 2019, so current servers generally use maintained forks such as LDM and RocketModFix rather than the abandoned original distribution.

Rocket.AutoInstaller automates the recurring file-replacement part of a RocketMod update. It is installed as a module under the Unturned server’s Modules directory. When the server restarts, the installer checks for the current RocketModFix release and obtains the update according to the module’s implementation. You still control when the restart happens.
This is not a live hot swap. Players should be disconnected and the Unturned process should be fully stopped before you alter module files. Schedule a maintenance window, stop the server cleanly, make your backup, then restart only after the module is in the correct location. After startup, read the console or log output to confirm that the module loaded and that the update completed.

The distinction matters for planning. A restart-based updater can remove repeated manual downloads, but it cannot preserve an active session while replacing assemblies. If your server is busy, announce the restart just as you would for a normal RocketMod or game update.
Understand the current RocketMod ecosystem
The project that originally carried the RocketMod name was discontinued by its maintainers in December 2019. The current ecosystem is built around forks. LDM is described as the official Smartly Dressed Games fork, while RocketModFix is a community-maintained fork of LDM focused on fixes and backward compatibility.

RocketModFix says its goal is to avoid major breaking changes: fixes and new features should not break backward compatibility, so existing plugins should not normally need recompilation solely because the fork receives a compatible update. That is a compatibility objective, not a guarantee for every plugin. A plugin can still depend on a particular game version, API behavior, or its own discontinued code. Treat each update as a change that deserves a backup and a quick plugin check.
Rocket.AutoInstaller is therefore useful for servers that already use the RocketModFix-style module layout. It does not turn an unrelated mod-loader layout into RocketMod, and it does not remove the need to understand which fork your server is running.
Before you install the updater
Prepare the server while it is still running, then perform the file work only after it is stopped. Have these items ready:
- Access to the Unturned server files, either through a local installation, SSH/file transfer, or a hosting control panel.
- Permission to stop and start the server and to edit its
Modulesdirectory. - A recent copy of the world data, server configuration, RocketMod configuration, and
RocketPluginsdirectory. - A copy of the currently installed RocketMod module or its original archive so you can roll back.
- A maintenance window long enough to stop the process, copy files, restart, and inspect the startup log.
If the server is managed by a provider, determine whether the panel keeps backups and whether its RocketMod action uses the same fork you intend to run. If the server runs in a container, verify that the module and configuration directories are mounted as persistent data rather than stored only inside a disposable container layer.

Install Rocket.AutoInstaller step by step
- Stop the Unturned server completely. Use the server console, service manager, or hosting panel’s Stop command. Wait until the process has exited before touching module files. Do not overwrite a loaded module while the server is running.
- Open the server’s
Modulesdirectory. This is the directory directly beneath the Unturned server installation that contains RocketMod modules. - Remove an older RocketMod module folder if present. RocketModFix’s Auto-Installer instructions tell first-time users to delete the entire
Modules/Rocket.Unturnedfolder. Remove that folder rather than leaving old files alongside the installer. Keep your backup outside the live server directory. - Download
Rocket.AutoInstaller.zip. Obtain it from the RocketModFix releases page. Use the archive supplied for the server’s current RocketModFix distribution, and retain the downloaded archive as part of your rollback record. - Extract the folder itself. Open the archive and copy the complete
Rocket.AutoInstallerfolder intoModules. The resulting layout should have a path beginningModules/Rocket.AutoInstaller. Do not copy only loose files from inside the folder intoModules, and do not create an unnecessary second nested folder such asModules/Rocket.AutoInstaller/Rocket.AutoInstaller. - Check the installation before starting. Confirm that the old
Rocket.Unturnedfolder is gone, the newRocket.AutoInstallerfolder is directly underModules, and your backup is stored somewhere safe. - Restart the server. Start Unturned normally. RocketModFix identifies the restart as the point at which future Rocket updates are received automatically.
- Inspect the startup output. Look for the Rocket.AutoInstaller module loading and for update activity or an up-to-date result. If the module does not appear, stop the server and recheck the folder level before attempting another start.
- Read the bundled instructions when needed. The installed module includes
Readme_EN.txtandReadme_RU.txt. Use those files for module-specific troubleshooting rather than guessing at a different directory or startup option.
Verify that the updater is working
A successful installation has three verifiable parts: the server starts with the module in its normal module scan, the startup log shows the installer being loaded, and a later controlled restart repeats the updater behavior without requiring you to replace Rocket.Unturned manually.
Perform the first verification with no players connected. Watch the complete startup sequence, not just the final “server ready” message. Record the date, the module version reported in the log, and any warning lines. If the first start takes longer because an update is being obtained, allow it to finish before deciding that the server is stuck.
For a second verification, stop the server normally after it has been running, start it again, and confirm that the Auto-Installer is still present and loads from the same path. This checks that the module was not accidentally copied into a temporary directory or removed by a panel’s deployment action.
Automatic updating should reduce manual file handling, but it does not eliminate operational checks. Continue to monitor startup logs after game updates, plugin changes, and unexpected crashes.

Will plugins and configuration files be deleted?
The Auto-Installer procedure specifically replaces the RocketMod module, not your world or plugin directories. RocketModFix’s stated compatibility goal is to let existing plugins continue without recompilation when an update does not introduce a breaking API change. Nevertheless, preserve your own backups before every module change.
A managed hosting guide for RocketMod says its update action preserves RocketPlugins and configuration files while replacing RocketMod files. That statement applies to that provider’s workflow; it should not be treated as a universal promise for every panel, script, or Docker image. Confirm the behavior of your own deployment method.

Plugin compatibility can still fail even when RocketModFix itself remains backward compatible. A plugin may require an update after a game patch, may depend on an API that changed, or may have been abandoned. After the server starts, check for plugin load errors and test essential commands before reopening the server to players.
Do not use an updater as a substitute for backups. Keep at least one recent world/configuration backup and one copy of the previous RocketMod module archive outside the live Modules directory.
Manual update fallback
Use the manual method when Auto-Installer is unsuitable, when your environment blocks its update process, or when you need to pin a known module version for a controlled maintenance window.
- Stop the Unturned server and wait for the process to exit.
- Back up the world, configuration, plugins, and current RocketMod module.
- Remove
Modules/Rocket.Unturnedfrom the live server directory. - Download the latest
Rocket.Unturned.Module.zipfrom RocketModFix. - Extract the archive and locate the complete
Rocket.Unturned.Modulefolder. - Copy the
Rocket.Unturnedfolder contained inside that package intoModules. - When the file manager asks whether to replace existing files, choose the replacement option after confirming that your backup is complete.
- Start the server and inspect the startup log for module and plugin errors.
The manual procedure is more work on every release, but it gives you a precise archive to retain and a clear version to restore. It is also a useful recovery technique if an automatic restart leaves the server unable to load.
Hosted-panel alternative
Some game hosts provide a managed RocketMod action instead of asking you to edit files. In the documented workflow from Host Havoc, you log in to the game control panel, click Install Rocketmod, and restart the server. The provider says this overwrites RocketMod files with the latest version while preserving plugins and configuration files.

- Which RocketMod fork and release the action installs.
- Whether the action runs immediately or waits for a restart.
- Which directories are preserved and which files are overwritten.
- How to restore the previous module if the new one fails.
- Whether backups are automatic, how long they are retained, and whether you can download them.
Do not combine a panel’s managed installer with a hand-copied Auto-Installer module unless the provider documents that layout. Two update mechanisms can overwrite one another and make the active version difficult to identify.
Docker and restart automation
A separate infrastructure option is the ImperialPlugins Unturned Docker project. Its published feature set advertises automatic game downloads on first start, update downloads on each restart, crash detection with automatic restart, and a SERVER_TYPE=rm4 mode for a RocketMod 4 server.
This is broader than a RocketMod module updater: the container can manage game acquisition and restart behavior as well as the mod-loader environment. It also introduces container-specific responsibilities. Follow the image’s current startup-script and environment-variable documentation, mount persistent server data, and test update behavior in a staging instance before using it for a live world.
Make sure the persistent mount contains the world, configuration, plugins, and module data you need to keep. A container that is recreated without those mounts can appear to “lose” files even though the image itself started correctly. Treat the image version, environment variables, and mounted paths as part of your deployment configuration and record them alongside your backups.
Choose the approach that fits your server

For a conventional server that already has the expected Modules directory, Rocket.AutoInstaller is the least disruptive route. A panel is convenient when you prefer delegated operations. Docker is appropriate when containerized deployment and automated restarts are already part of your infrastructure.
Troubleshoot common setup failures
The server starts, but Rocket.AutoInstaller never appears in the log
Stop the server and inspect the path. The folder must be directly under Modules, and the folder itself must be named Rocket.AutoInstaller. A common extraction mistake is copying only the archive’s contents or creating an extra nested directory. Remove the misplaced copy, extract the complete folder again, and restart.

The old RocketMod module still loads
Stop the process and look for Modules/Rocket.Unturned. RocketModFix’s first-time instructions require removing that entire folder before installing the Auto-Installer. Leaving the old module beside the updater can make it unclear which component is active. Preserve the old files in your backup location, not in the live module directory.
The server does not start after an update
Stop it, preserve the startup log, and restore the previous RocketMod module from the archive you saved before the change. Do not repeatedly restart without recording the error; each attempt can obscure the original failure. Once the prior module is restored, inspect the log for the first module or plugin error and test again with the known-good files.
A plugin fails after RocketMod starts
Separate a RocketMod load failure from a plugin compatibility failure. Check whether the core module loaded successfully, then identify the specific plugin named in the log. Consult that plugin’s release notes and update it only after backing up its configuration. RocketModFix’s backward-compatibility goal reduces the need for recompilation in compatible releases, but it cannot guarantee that every plugin remains compatible with every Unturned or plugin dependency change.
The update did not occur on restart
Confirm that you performed a full stop and start rather than only reconnecting players or reloading a configuration. Verify that the Auto-Installer remains in Modules, read the complete startup output, and consult the bundled Readme_EN.txt or Readme_RU.txt. If the environment prevents the module from completing its update, use the manual Rocket.Unturned.Module.zip procedure for a controlled version.
Safe operating routine for future updates
- Announce a maintenance window and stop new player activity.
- Stop the server cleanly and wait for the process to exit.
- Copy the world, configuration, plugins, and current module archive to a separate backup location.
- Review the RocketModFix release information and any plugin release notes relevant to your server.
- Start the server and watch the complete startup log.
- Test authentication, essential commands, permissions, and the plugins that affect gameplay.
- Reopen the server only after the test passes.
- Keep the previous module archive until the new release has operated reliably through at least one normal restart.
This routine keeps the convenience of restart-triggered updates while preserving a deterministic recovery path. It also makes it easier to tell whether a failure came from the RocketMod module, a plugin, the game version, or the hosting environment.
