Set up a Rust Auto Turret by crafting or obtaining the unit, placing it so its forward 180-degree scan covers the approach you want to protect, wiring its Power In, loading a compatible projectile weapon and matching ammunition, and adding every intended user to the turret’s own authorization list. Power it on only after checking the sightline, then test its sweep and target behavior. The details that usually decide whether the installation works are the turret’s 10 rW operating draw, its 30 m effective shooting range, and the 40 m active-turret interference radius.
What you need before placing an Auto Turret
An Auto Turret is an automated sentry that engages moving targets it can see. It is not a drop-and-forget device: placement direction, power, ammunition, authorization and nearby turret count all affect whether it will actually fire.
| Requirement | Verified detail | What it means for your build |
|---|---|---|
| Crafting recipe | 10 High Quality Metal, 1 CCTV Camera and 1 Targeting Computer | You need all three components and a Workbench Level 2 or higher. |
| Craft time | 45 seconds at Workbench Level 2; 22 seconds at Level 3 | A Level 3 bench shortens production time but does not change the recipe. |
| Operating power | 10 rW into the turret’s Power In | Size your power source and battery for each turret plus every other load on that circuit. |
| Scan direction | 180-degree forward arc facing the player at placement | Stand on the side you want the turret to watch before confirming placement. |
| Maximum shooting range | 30 m in the RustClash technical reference | A more powerful gun does not extend the turret’s range. |
| Active interference | Turrets activated within 40 m are subject to the limit introduced by Facepunch | Plan which nearby turrets are powered at the same time. |
The recipe and operating requirement come from Facepunch’s current Rust Wiki item data. The 30 m range and separate authorization behavior are documented in the RustClash technical reference, while the 40 m interference rule comes from Facepunch’s 5 October 2023 “Solid foundations” update.
1. Craft or obtain the turret
Crafting at the correct workbench
At a Workbench Level 2 or higher, combine 10 High Quality Metal, one CCTV Camera and one Targeting Computer. The official item data lists a 45-second craft time at Level 2 and a 22-second craft time at Level 3. If you already have a turret, you can skip this step and proceed to planning its location.

Why gathering the components first matters
Do not begin wiring or redesigning a defensive room around an assumed turret and then discover that one electronic component is missing. Have the completed unit, its intended weapon, matching ammunition and the electrical parts for the circuit ready before opening a wall or roof position. The turret cannot defend an approach until it has both a weapon and working power.
2. Choose the coverage direction before placement
How the 180-degree arc is determined
The turret searches a 180-degree arc facing the player when it is placed. In practical terms, the side of the turret nearest you at the moment of placement becomes the rear, and the opposite half is the area it can scan. Stand inside your base on the side from which you want the turret to look outward; do not stand in the lane you intend to protect and point it back toward your own room.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Check the lane before confirming
- Trace the likely approach from its entrance to the position where a raider would first become visible.
- Keep the intended lane inside the forward half-circle rather than at the extreme side of the arc.
- Check for walls, roof pieces, building parts, props and other objects that could block the muzzle or the turret’s view.
- Leave enough clearance for the weapon to point through its opening without clipping into the structure.
- Consider how an attacker could approach from the turret’s exposed rear or side and whether another defensive position must cover that angle.
A turret only engages a target it can see. A unit with perfect power and ammunition still appears inactive if the target is behind a building piece or outside the forward arc.
3. Wire power into Power In
Meet the operating draw
Connect your electrical circuit to the turret’s Power In. Facepunch’s item data specifies a 10 rW operating requirement. The source must supply that draw while also supporting any other devices on the same circuit; a circuit that is adequate for one turret may fail when several turrets, doors or alarms are added.

Plan for multiple turrets
Count every turret you expect to run concurrently, then account for the rest of the circuit rather than sizing the source only for the sentries. Include the battery capacity needed to keep the installation powered for the period you expect, and verify that the circuit still has enough input when other loads activate. If you intentionally alternate turrets, label the circuits so teammates know which units are live.
Confirm power before loading a weapon
After connecting the wire, open the turret interface and verify that the unit recognizes power. A turret that does not boot cannot be diagnosed reliably from its targeting behavior. Fix the circuit first, then continue with the weapon and authorization steps.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches4. Install a compatible weapon and ammunition
Weapon slot
Open the turret’s loot panel and put a projectile weapon in the weapon slot. Facepunch’s “Modular Turrets” announcement says Auto Turrets accept almost any projectile weapon, ranging from an Eoka to an M249, when the associated ammunition is supplied. This flexibility lets you choose the weapon around the role of the position rather than treating the turret as tied to one fixed gun.
Load matching ammunition
Place the ammunition that the installed weapon uses in the ammunition slot. A weapon without matching ammunition will not fire, even when the turret has power and a valid target. When changing a weapon or refilling it, the RustClash technical reference advises turning the turret off first. That prevents an unexpected engagement while the loot panel is open and makes the changeover easier to verify.

Choose ammunition for the position
Use the approach and expected engagement distance to decide how much ammunition to keep available. The turret’s range is independent of the gun: upgrading from one projectile weapon to another does not turn a 30 m position into a long-range one. Store refill ammunition where an authorized teammate can reach it without walking through the turret’s firing lane.
5. Authorize yourself and your teammates
Use the turret’s own authorization list
Add yourself and every teammate who should be able to pass the turret safely to the authorization list in the turret interface. Authorization is local to that turret. The RustClash technical reference specifically notes that Tool Cupboard authorization does not automatically substitute for authorization on the turret.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Keep the list deliberate
- Add only players who should be treated as friendly by this firing position.
- Remove former teammates or temporary visitors when the group changes.
- Repeat the process on each turret; authorizing a player on one unit does not establish access on another.
- Test a teammate’s access while the turret is safe and powered down as appropriate, instead of discovering a permissions mistake during a raid.
Friends being targeted is usually an authorization problem, not a power problem. Verify the exact list on the particular turret that is firing.
6. Power on and test the complete installation
- Inspect the position. Confirm that the forward half-circle covers the intended approach and that no new obstruction has appeared between the muzzle and the lane.
- Verify the circuit. Confirm that Power In is connected and that the source can carry the turret’s operating draw with the other connected loads.
- Check the weapon panel. Make sure the weapon is in its slot and the ammunition matches that weapon.
- Review authorization. Confirm that you and the people who must pass the position are listed on this turret.
- Activate the turret. Watch for the unit to boot and sweep its intended arc.
- Test from a safe angle. Observe whether it tracks a permitted test target in line of sight and whether it ignores authorized players. Do not stand in an unverified firing lane.
- Record the result. Note the turret’s location, circuit and authorization list so a teammate can service it without guessing.
If you need to refill or replace the weapon, turn the turret off first, make the change, and repeat the checks before reactivating it.

Designing coverage that works during a raid
Use range and line of sight together
The turret’s maximum shooting range is 30 m according to the RustClash technical reference, and the equipped gun does not extend that limit. Place the unit where the approach enters that distance after the target becomes visible, rather than placing it deep behind a corner where the target can reach cover first.
Line of sight is just as important as distance. A turret can be within range yet unable to engage because a wall, roof piece or prop blocks the view. Openings should expose the intended lane while leaving the turret’s vulnerable sides as protected as the building design allows.
Recommended Free Tools
Overlap fields of fire deliberately
Overlapping turrets can cover the blind edge of one arc, but overlap should be intentional. Draw each unit’s forward 180-degree area on your base plan and identify which approach each one owns. Avoid placing all units so they face the same lane while leaving the rear entrance uncovered. Also check that an attacker cannot stand behind one turret, outside its view, and destroy it safely.
Stay below the active-interference limit
Facepunch introduced Turret Interference in the 5 October 2023 “Solid foundations” update. Its official rule is: “There is no hard limit on the number of turrets you can deploy, only a limit on the number of turrets to be activated at any one time within 40m.” When the local active limit is exceeded, subsequently activated turrets emit a blue electrical glow and fail to acquire targets.

Treat 40 m as a design constraint for simultaneously powered units. You can deploy more turrets overall, but decide which nearby groups should be active together. If a turret glows blue and will not acquire a target, inspect the surrounding active units before replacing the weapon or rebuilding the opening. Disabled turrets can still be remotely controlled from a Computer Station, which can help you manage a layout where only selected positions are active.
Remote control and useful electrical outputs
Computer Station control
A Computer Station can control a turret after its Listening ID is configured. Listening IDs are case-sensitive, according to the technical reference. Use a unique, documented ID for each unit and copy the capitalization exactly when entering it at the station. A typo that changes letter case can look like a connection failure even when the turret and station are otherwise configured correctly.

Outputs for alarms and logic
The turret exposes three named outputs: Has Target, Low Ammo and No Ammo. These can feed alarms, door controllers or other electrical logic. For example, an indicator connected to Low Ammo can tell a defender to service the position before the next fight, while Has Target can trigger a response elsewhere in the base. Design the logic so that an alert identifies the specific turret; otherwise a teammate still has to search every unit.
Troubleshooting: match the symptom to the cause
| Symptom | Checks and correction |
|---|---|
| The turret does not boot | Confirm that Power In is connected, the circuit supplies at least the turret’s required draw, and a weapon is installed. |
| It tracks but does not shoot | Check for matching ammunition, then confirm that the target is unauthorized, visible and within the turret’s range. |
| It glows blue and acquires nothing | Inspect active turrets within 40 m. The unit may be over the local Turret Interference limit; deactivate or reorganize nearby active units. |
| It targets friends | Open this turret’s authorization list and add the affected players. Tool Cupboard authorization alone is not sufficient in the cited technical reference. |
| The protected lane is missed | Reconsider the placement orientation. The turret’s forward 180-degree arc is set by the direction you faced when placing it; remove line-of-sight obstructions or rotate the placement. |
| Remote control fails | Check that the turret’s Listening ID is entered with exactly the same spelling and case, and verify that the turret has power or is otherwise in the state required for the intended remote action. |
A practical pre-raid inspection checklist
- Verify the unit is crafted from the required components or that an obtained turret is ready to install.
- Stand at the planned placement point and look through the complete forward arc before confirming.
- Check every obstruction at the muzzle and along the lane.
- Confirm the circuit can supply the turret while other connected devices run.
- Inspect the weapon and its matching ammunition.
- Review the local authorization list rather than relying on Tool Cupboard permissions.
- Count simultaneously active turrets inside the 40 m interference radius.
- Check the turret’s outputs or Computer Station entry if your design depends on remote alerts or control.
- Test the sweep after any building change, weapon change, wiring change or authorization change.
Key facts to remember
An effective Rust Auto Turret installation is a coordinated system: the placement supplies the correct 180-degree view, the circuit supplies the operating power, the weapon has its ammunition, the local list identifies friendlies, and the surrounding layout stays within the active-interference rule. The turret’s 30 m maximum shooting distance remains the same regardless of which compatible projectile weapon you install, so spend your design effort on sightlines, protected openings and deliberate coverage rather than expecting a different gun to solve a placement problem.
Facepunch’s official item description summarizes the purpose: “This automated electric sentry turret will engage and neutralize any moving targets it has line of sight to.”
