To set up motion zones on an Arlo Pro 6, open Devices in the Arlo Secure app, select the camera, tap its settings gear, then choose Zones > Activity > +. Shape the zone around the place where activity matters, such as the walkway to a door, and leave roads or moving branches outside it where possible. Then test and adjust motion sensitivity separately in Default Mode Settings. A zone can make alerts more relevant, but it cannot guarantee that every unwanted event will stop or that off-zone activity will never be recorded.
What an Activity Zone changes—and what it does not
An Activity Zone tells the camera which part of its view should count for zone-based motion handling. For a front door, that might mean the approach path and landing rather than the entire yard. The goal is to have activity in the important area reach the Feed and alert workflow while excluding irrelevant movement outside it.
Zones are not the same as lowering sensitivity. A zone narrows the area of interest; sensitivity changes how readily the camera reacts to movement in its detection behavior. Neither setting is a promise that false alerts will disappear. The right result depends on the camera’s view and what moves through it, so check the effect in your own scene.
- Use an Activity Zone when the unwanted activity comes from a particular part of the image, such as a street or tree at the edge of the frame.
- Adjust sensitivity when the camera is reacting too readily across the scene, or when you need to tune how much movement it detects.
- Change notifications or modes when you want to keep useful recordings but receive fewer push alerts.
- Reposition the camera when an irrelevant source dominates the view and can reasonably be excluded by aiming elsewhere.
- Use a Privacy Zone when an area should be obscured in the image, rather than merely excluded from activity handling.
It helps to identify the outcome you want before changing settings. If a tree repeatedly triggers events, the first question is whether the tree can be kept outside the Activity Zone or out of the camera’s view. If recordings of people are useful but the push notifications are not, filtering notifications may be a better fit than changing motion sensitivity. If you need part of the picture concealed, use a Privacy Zone instead of expecting an Activity Zone to hide it.

Arlo identifies the Pro Security Camera 6th Gen as model VMC4070. Its app labels and available controls can vary with app release, firmware, account, or device configuration. Follow the controls shown for your camera if a label or screen differs from the path below.
Set up an Activity Zone in the Arlo Secure app
- Open the Arlo Secure app and tap Devices.
- Select the Arlo Pro 6 camera you want to configure.
- Tap the camera’s settings gear, then tap Zones.
- Select Activity, then tap + to add a zone.
- Drag the zone’s anchor points to shape and size it around the area where meaningful activity should count. Drag inside the shape to reposition it.
- If the app displays a Save control, save the zone before leaving the screen.
Make the boundary follow the real path or area you care about rather than enclosing the whole camera view by default. For example, if passing cars trigger unwanted activity, include the walkway to your entrance but leave the road outside the zone. Arlo says that a portion of an object entering an Activity Zone can be enough for detection, so a broad zone may still admit activity you meant to filter out.
It can be useful to think of the zone as a shape drawn over the camera’s current image, not as a boundary around a fixed physical distance. Place it by looking at the live view: include the visible part of the entrance or path you want to monitor, and leave out visible areas that repeatedly generate irrelevant activity. A small amount of overlap at an edge can matter because part of an object entering the zone may be enough to count. If an alert continues after you reshape the boundary, check the object’s path through the frame rather than assuming the entire object must be inside or outside.
Do not rely on a zone count or number of anchor points from instructions for a different camera. Arlo’s documentation says these limits vary by model, and the available Pro 6 material does not establish a model-specific Activity Zone limit. Use the app’s available controls for your device. If the app presents a different number of available zones or a slightly different layout, follow that camera-specific interface rather than trying to reproduce a limit reported for another model.
Reduce false alerts in the order that preserves useful detection
Change the cause of the unwanted events before making the camera less responsive everywhere. If a road or swaying vegetation is responsible, reducing sensitivity may also make meaningful movement harder to catch. The following sequence starts with changes that target the source, then moves to broader detection and notification adjustments.
Make one change at a time when possible. If you move the camera, redraw the zone, lower sensitivity, and change notifications all at once, it becomes difficult to tell which adjustment changed the result. Start with the most obvious source in the picture, then review events in the Feed and alerts in the conditions that matter. A useful setup balances fewer irrelevant interruptions with continued detection of the movement you care about.
1. Remove irrelevant motion from the view if practical
Check the live camera view and identify what is triggering the events: traffic, moving branches, a flag, glare, or another changing part of the scene. If you can aim the camera away from the street or other irrelevant activity while retaining the view you need, do that first. Secure the mount as well; a loose or wind-prone mounting point can add unwanted movement.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsArlo also advises avoiding placements exposed to direct sun, rapidly changing temperatures, and swaying or heat-trapping vegetation. Those conditions can contribute to unwanted triggers. A camera cannot be aimed to exclude every nuisance source in every installation, but improving the physical view may help more than repeatedly changing app settings.
Think about the whole scene, not only the object that appeared in one alert. If the camera is pointed toward a road, cars may repeatedly cross the field of view. If vegetation moves across the frame in wind, a secure mount will not remove the plant movement itself, but changing the angle or keeping the vegetation outside the zone may help. The practical test is whether the camera can retain the doorway, walkway, or other useful area while reducing the view of the recurring nuisance source.

2. Tighten the zone to the important path
Review the Activity Zone boundary against the live image. Keep the zone around the door approach, gate, driveway entrance, or other specific place that should count. Exclude the parts of the frame that contain recurring irrelevant movement. Because even part of an object entering the zone can be detected, do not let the boundary brush a road or moving plant if that source should be ignored.
For example, if the purpose is to know when someone approaches a door, a zone around the entry path can be more selective than one covering the entire front yard. If the road lies beside that path, a narrower shape may reduce road-related events while retaining the approach area. Recheck the boundary after saving, especially near the edges where cars, branches, or other moving objects pass.
After changing the camera’s position, angle, or zoom, inspect and adjust the zone again. A zone is positioned in relation to the camera view; it may no longer cover the same physical area after the view changes.
3. Test sensitivity, then set the actual level
The Motion Detection Test helps you find a workable sensitivity threshold, but the test itself does not save a new setting. Use it as a diagnostic step, then set the Motion Detection slider separately.
- In the app, open Devices and select the Pro 6 camera.
- Open Default Mode Settings and choose Motion Detection Test.
- Start at Low. Walk in front of the camera from roughly 5–10 feet away.
- Raise the test slider until the camera LED indicates that motion is detected.
- Return to Default Mode Settings and move the Motion Detection slider to set the actual level you want.
The test answers a narrow question: at what test level does the camera indicate that it detects a person walking in front of it from the suggested distance? It does not independently apply that level to your camera. After using the test, return to the Motion Detection slider and set the level you intend to use. This separate save step is easy to miss if you assume that seeing the LED respond means the setting has already changed.
Treat the test as a way to assess a person walking in front of your specific camera, not as a universal setting recommendation or a performance guarantee. Lower sensitivity can reduce unwanted events, but it can also make less prominent movement harder to detect. Check the result with the kinds of activity you actually want to catch.

A path with regular movement, nearby vegetation, and a camera aimed at a busy street are different scenes. After setting the slider, observe whether meaningful activity still produces detections and whether the recurring nuisance events have changed. If only one area is problematic, an Activity Zone or camera adjustment may be more targeted than lowering sensitivity across the scene.
4. Disable Auto Zoom & Tracking while configuring zones
Arlo says Auto Zoom & Tracking can affect Activity Zone accuracy and advises disabling it while configuring zones. If you later change zoom or the camera’s view, revisit the zone: its boundary may need adjustment to match the framing you intend to monitor.
In practical terms, configure the boundary against the view you plan to keep. A zone that was shaped for one framing may not line up with the same doorway or path after a zoom or camera-angle change. If the monitored scene appears shifted or enlarged compared with when you drew the zone, review the shape before judging whether the zone is working as intended.

5. Separate alert filtering from recording behavior
If recordings are useful but push alerts are not, review Smart Notifications and the camera’s Modes/Rules rather than lowering detection across the board. Smart Notification categories include People, Vehicles, Animal, and All Other Motion. You can toggle categories to tailor which types generate push alerts.
Recommended Free Tools
Those notification switches do not necessarily stop Feed recordings of the corresponding object categories. If you want the camera to keep recording without notifying you for every event, use a mode or rule configured for recording without notifications, where that option is available in your setup. Review the mode active at the times you care about; a notification preference and a recording rule answer different questions.
When reviewing a result, distinguish among three things: whether an event was detected, whether a video appears in the Feed, and whether a push notification arrived. A notification filter can reduce interruptions without removing a useful Feed recording. Conversely, changing a detection-related setting can affect the events available for later review. Decide which of these outcomes you want to change before choosing the setting.
Choose the right control for the problem
| What you want to change | Setting or action | What to keep in mind |
|---|---|---|
| Ignore movement in one part of the image | Activity Zone | Focus it on the relevant area; local storage is an exception to zone-based filtering. |
| Make motion detection less responsive more generally | Motion Detection slider in Default Mode Settings | Test first, set the slider separately, and verify that desired movement is still detected. |
| Receive fewer alerts but retain useful Feed recordings | Smart Notification categories or Modes/Rules | Notification filtering does not necessarily stop Feed recordings. |
| Keep a private area out of the visible image | Privacy Zone | A masked area is not the same as an Activity Zone; motion can still trigger a video and notification. |
| Remove a persistent nuisance source from the frame | Change camera placement or angle | Recheck the Activity Zone after changing the view. |
A quick way to choose is to match the setting to the symptom. A recurring event tied to one edge of the image points first to the zone boundary or camera view. Alerts from many kinds of movement across the view point to testing and possibly adjusting sensitivity. Useful videos paired with too many push notifications point to notification categories or Modes/Rules. A concern about showing a neighbor’s property points to privacy masking, not activity filtering.
These controls are not interchangeable. Changing notification categories does not necessarily stop recordings; drawing an Activity Zone does not conceal an area; and lowering sensitivity can affect movement beyond the single troublesome patch of the image. The best first adjustment is usually the narrowest one that addresses the unwanted outcome while leaving the rest of the setup intact.

Activity Zones, Privacy Zones, and local storage
An Activity Zone and a Privacy Zone solve different problems. Activity Zones select parts of the view for activity handling. Privacy Zones mask selected image areas, such as a neighbor’s property, in the image and recordings. Arlo notes that motion can still trigger a video and notification while a Privacy Zone is greyed out. If your aim is to limit unwanted activity handling, use an Activity Zone; if your aim is to conceal part of the image, use a Privacy Zone.
Arlo recommends Activity Zones rather than Privacy Zones when the goal is to limit unwanted recordings. A Privacy Zone should not be treated as an alert blocker: the private area is greyed out, but motion may still trigger a video and notification. Conversely, an Activity Zone is not an image mask. It is intended to focus activity handling on selected portions of the view, not to hide a neighbor’s property from the image or recording.
There is also an important exception for local storage: Arlo says local storage saves all videos regardless of whether the activity is inside an Activity Zone. Do not treat an Activity Zone as a way to prevent off-zone local recordings. If your setup uses local storage, account for that behavior when deciding whether a zone meets your goal; zone-based handling does not mean every storage destination will exclude activity outside the boundary.

The camera still detects trees, flags, or other movement
Check whether the moving object or its edge overlaps the Activity Zone. Because only part of an object needs to enter the zone for detection, a boundary that appears to exclude most of a branch or flag may still include enough of it to trigger. Tighten or reposition the zone, and consider changing the camera angle or clearing a wind-prone placement if practical.

If the object is wholly outside the zone as displayed, inspect whether the camera view changed after the zone was created or whether Auto Zoom & Tracking is affecting the framing. Reconfigure the zone against the current view with Auto Zoom & Tracking disabled while doing so. If the moving source is difficult to exclude without losing the area you need, test a sensitivity adjustment and confirm that desired movement remains detectable.
Cars or pedestrians outside the intended area still cause events
Compare the alert with the zone shown in the camera view. If the road crosses the boundary, reshape the zone to cover only the walkway or entrance. If the road remains in the useful view but should not create push alerts, review notification categories or the active mode instead of assuming that a zone controls every type of recording or alert.
Also separate an event in the Feed from a push alert. Smart Notification settings can change which alerts you receive without necessarily stopping Feed recordings. If your goal is simply fewer interruptions, an alert-category or mode adjustment may preserve a video you would still want to review later.
The zone no longer matches the physical area
Review it after changing camera position, angle, or zoom, including after using Auto Zoom & Tracking. Reopen Devices > the camera’s settings gear > Zones > Activity and adjust the shape against the current view.

Do not assume the zone continues to track a fixed place in the yard after the camera is repositioned. Compare the current image with the intended physical area, then redraw or move the boundary as needed. If the app’s labels differ, use the zone controls currently displayed for the Pro 6.
The Motion Detection Test works, but unwanted events remain
The test does not save the setting. Confirm that you moved the Motion Detection slider under Default Mode Settings after testing. Then check whether the unwanted activity is coming from a particular part of the view, which a tighter Activity Zone or camera adjustment may address more directly than lowering sensitivity.
A successful test only confirms that the camera LED indicates detection under the test conditions. It does not establish that every kind of motion in your scene will be detected at the same level or that the level will eliminate false alerts. Check both the detection behavior you want to retain and the nuisance activity you want to reduce after setting the actual slider.
You still receive alerts after changing Smart Notifications
Check which notification category is enabled and which mode or rule is active. Smart Notification choices affect alert handling; they do not necessarily stop recordings in the Feed. If the event is recorded but no longer sends a push notification, that distinction may be the intended result rather than a zone failure.
If a push alert still arrives, verify that the category associated with the event is disabled as intended and review the active Modes/Rules. Do not assume a notification setting will override every recording behavior; the two controls govern different parts of the experience.

Check the result in the actual scene
Once you have saved any displayed zone changes and set the sensitivity slider, observe the camera during the conditions that matter: normal foot traffic, the time of day when glare occurs, or windy periods if vegetation is nearby. Check whether desired activity appears in the Feed and whether irrelevant activity still generates notifications. Adjust one control at a time so you can tell which change helped; there is no documented Pro 6 false-alert reduction percentage or single sensitivity value that applies to every installation.
Use the first review to verify that the zone includes the important path and excludes the nuisance area. Then review sensitivity and alert behavior separately. A person approaching the door, a vehicle passing on the road, and a branch moving in wind are different kinds of scene activity; a setup that handles one condition well may still need a careful adjustment for another. Recheck under ordinary conditions rather than judging the result from a single test walk alone.
Zone limits and some app controls are model- and configuration-dependent. If your Pro 6 app does not show a control described here, use the options available for your camera rather than assuming a different model’s zone count or interface applies. The aim is a practical balance: keep the approach or area you care about in the zone, reduce the view of recurring nuisance motion where feasible, and choose alert settings that match whether you want fewer notifications, fewer recordings, or both.

How do I set up a motion zone on an Arlo Pro 6?
In the Arlo Secure app, tap Devices, select the Pro 6 camera, tap its settings gear, then choose Zones > Activity > +. Drag the anchor points to shape the area and drag inside the shape to reposition it. Save if the app displays a Save control.
Why does my Arlo camera keep detecting trees or cars?
A moving branch, flag, or vehicle may overlap the Activity Zone; Arlo says part of an object entering the zone can be enough for detection. Tighten the zone, aim away from irrelevant motion if practical, or review sensitivity and camera placement. Recheck the zone after changing the camera angle or zoom.
Does an Activity Zone stop all off-zone recordings?
No. Arlo says local storage saves all videos regardless of whether activity is inside an Activity Zone. Zone behavior should not be treated as a way to prevent off-zone local recordings.
What is the difference between an Activity Zone and a Privacy Zone?
An Activity Zone selects parts of the view for activity handling. A Privacy Zone masks an area in the image and recordings, but motion can still trigger a video and notification while the area is greyed out. Use activity zones to focus activity handling and privacy zones to conceal part of the image.
Recommended Free Tools
Does the Motion Detection Test save my sensitivity setting?
No. The test helps you find a workable threshold, but you must return to Default Mode Settings and move the Motion Detection slider to set the actual level.
Can I reduce notifications without stopping useful recordings?
Often, yes. Smart Notification categories and Modes/Rules can tailor alerts, while Feed recordings may continue. Review the active mode and distinguish notifications from recordings; notification switches do not necessarily stop Feed videos.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Shape an Activity Zone around the walkway, door, or other area that matters, then check for overlap from roads and moving vegetation. Test motion detection at roughly 5–10 feet, set the actual sensitivity slider separately, and use notification controls when the recordings are useful but the alerts are not. Recheck zones after changing the camera view, and remember that Privacy Zones mask image areas while local storage can still save off-zone videos.
