If one app keeps making unwanted sounds or vibrations, change that app’s notification category (called a notification channel in Android developer documentation) instead of silencing the whole phone. Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications, choose the app, select the noisy category, and set it to Silent or turn it off. Menu names vary by phone and Android version; if you cannot find the setting, touch and hold one of the app’s notifications and open its settings.
What notification channels are on Android
Android groups an app’s alerts into separate notification channels. The user interface may call these groups categories, while Android’s developer documentation calls them channels. A news app, for example, might separate breaking alerts from general updates; a messaging app might separate conversation types. The exact groups depend on how the app was built.
Starting with Android 8.0 (API level 26), notifications must be assigned to a channel. Each channel has its own user-controlled behavior. You can allow one category to make sound, keep another silent, and disable a third while leaving the rest of the app enabled. Channel settings affect notifications assigned to that channel, not every notification from the app.

The phone owner controls whether that channel is intrusive or visible in system settings. An app can provide additional preferences inside its own interface, but those preferences do not replace the system controls.

Choose the right control before changing anything
The best setting depends on the scope of the interruption and whether you still need to see the notification.

Use a category first when one stream is the problem and other alerts from the same app remain useful. Use the app-wide switch only when you want nothing from that app. Use Do Not Disturb or a Mode when the quiet period should cover multiple apps or follow a schedule.
Open the app’s notification categories
Primary route: Settings
- Open the phone’s Settings app.
- Tap Notifications, then App notifications. On some phones or Android versions, the equivalent path is Apps & notifications > Notifications.
- Look for the noisy app. The list may show a Most recent section; choose All apps when the app is not listed there.
- Tap the app’s name. You will see its overall notification control and, when the app exposes them, individual categories.
Labels and screen layout differ between manufacturers and Android releases. If you see a search box in Settings, search for notifications and open the result that leads to app notification controls.

- Swipe down to open the notification shade.
- Find a notification from the noisy app.
- Touch and hold that notification.
- Open its notification settings. Android will usually take you directly to the relevant app or category, avoiding several menu levels.
This route is especially useful when an app has many categories and you want to change the exact type of alert that just interrupted you. If the direct screen shows only an app-level switch, the app may not expose separate categories through that notification or your phone may use a different layout; open the app’s page from Settings > Notifications > App notifications to check.

Silence one category without hiding it
Choose Silent when you still want the notification available for later review but do not want a sound or vibration. Google’s consumer guidance describes silent notifications as remaining available in the notification shade.
- Open the app’s notification settings using either route above.
- Tap the specific category that is noisy.
- Select Silent if that option is shown instead of, or alongside, an alerting setting.
- Leave the category enabled if you want its notifications to remain visible in the shade.
On some phones, the choice is presented as an Alerting/Silent pair. Alerting permits the normal audible or vibrating interruption for that category. Silent removes those interruption effects while keeping the notification available in the shade. The exact controls around lock-screen visibility or icons can vary by device, so read the options shown on your phone rather than assuming every model has identical switches.
Turn off only the noisy category
If you do not need that type of message at all, disable its category instead of choosing Silent.

- Find the category associated with the unwanted alert.
- Turn that category off.
- Keep the other categories enabled if you still rely on them.
Category names are supplied by the app, so they may be descriptive, abbreviated, or divided into several similar entries. If you are unsure which one corresponds to the interruption, start with Silent rather than disabling it. Observe the next notification from the app, then return to the same category and turn it off once you have identified it.

Turn off every notification from an app
Use the app-wide notification switch only when you want to stop all notifications from that app.
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Choose the app under Most recent or find it in All apps.
- Turn off the app’s main notification control.
This is broader than changing one category. Messages, reminders, status updates, and other alerts from the same app can all be affected. If you later discover that an important alert disappeared, return to this screen and re-enable the app, then disable or silence only the offending category.
What to do when categories are missing
- Check the app page, not just the recent list. Open All apps and select the app directly.
- Use a real notification. Touch and hold an alert from the app and open its settings; this can reveal the category that generated it.
- Look inside the app. Many apps provide additional notification preferences in their own settings. Those controls can determine which messages the app sends, while Android’s system page determines how an existing category behaves.
- Search Settings. Search for notifications when your phone uses different menu wording.
- Confirm the Android version and phone interface. Google notes that notification settings vary by phone, so a guide written for another model may show different labels or screen order.
An app may also place several kinds of messages in one category. In that case, Android cannot separate them further because the grouping comes from the app. You can silence or disable that whole category, or use the app’s own preferences if it offers finer controls.
Notification channels versus Do Not Disturb and Modes
Category controls are precise and app-specific. Do Not Disturb and Modes are broader interruption controls that can apply rules across apps and situations. Google documents app filters within Modes and notes that some setup steps apply only on Android 14 and later.

Use a category when
- One app is noisy but other apps should continue alerting normally.
- Only one stream from an app is unwanted.
- You want a lasting preference for that category rather than a timed quiet period.
- You want the notification visible but without sound or vibration.
Use Do Not Disturb or a Mode when
- You need a quiet period covering several apps.
- You want rules for which people or apps may interrupt you.
- The quiet period should recur or be tied to a situation supported by your phone’s Mode settings.
These controls can coexist. A category set to Silent remains a category-level preference, while a Mode can apply a temporary or scheduled broader filter. If an alert behaves differently during a Mode, inspect the Mode’s allowed-app and interruption rules rather than repeatedly changing the category.
How Android applies a channel setting
When an app posts a notification, it assigns that notification to a channel. Android then applies the user’s settings for that channel: whether it can alert, whether it is silent, and whether it is enabled. The app cannot programmatically override the visual and auditory behavior selected by the user after the channel has been created.
This explains why changing a preference inside an app may not restore sound or vibration. The app can offer its own message filters, but the final channel behavior is controlled from the phone’s system settings. To change it, return to the app’s notification page and adjust the category there.

Restore an alert if you silenced the wrong thing
- Open Settings > Notifications > App notifications.
- Select the affected app from Most recent or All apps.
- If the entire app is off, turn its main notification control back on.
- If only one category is disabled, enable that category.
- If the category is set to Silent, change it to Alerting if you want sound or vibration again.
If the alert still does not appear, check whether a Do Not Disturb or Mode rule is active. Also open the app’s own notification preferences; the app may have stopped sending that message type even though Android permits it.

Common problems and fixes
The menu path does not match
Phone makers and Android versions use different labels. Try Settings search for notifications, look under Apps & notifications, or use the touch-and-hold shortcut on a live notification.
The app is not under Most recent
Open All apps and select it there. The recent list is only a convenience view of apps that have notified you recently.
You cannot find a category
Open the app’s notification page and inspect every listed category. If none appears, the app may not expose separate categories on that device, or the category may be created only after the app sends a particular type of notification. Use the app’s own notification settings for any additional controls it provides.
Silent still shows notifications
That is expected. Silent is intended to remove sound and vibration while keeping the notification available in the notification shade. If you do not want it visible there, disable the category instead, subject to the options offered by your phone.
The app keeps making noise after you changed one category
The app may be using another category. Touch and hold the next noisy notification to identify its settings, then adjust that category. A Mode or Do Not Disturb rule can also affect interruption behavior, so check those controls if the result changes only during a quiet period.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify whether the problem is one category, the whole app, or several apps.
- Use Settings > Notifications > App notifications, or the equivalent path on your phone.
- Choose All apps if the app is not in Most recent.
- Prefer a category change when other notifications from the app are useful.
- Choose Silent to keep the notification visible without sound or vibration.
- Turn a category off when you do not want that type of notification at all.
- Turn off the app-wide switch only when every notification from the app should stop.
- Use Do Not Disturb or a Mode for broader or scheduled quiet periods.
- Remember that the phone’s system settings control an existing channel’s visual and auditory behavior.
- Recheck the app’s own preferences if Android settings do not explain the alert.
