Android Auto is already integrated into supported Android phones, so you normally do not install a separate Android Auto app. To use it, your phone and car must both support projection, your phone needs an active data plan, and you must complete the first connection while parked. Use a high-quality USB cable for wired projection, or pair Bluetooth first for a compatible wireless system. After connecting, the phone’s Android Auto settings let you hide apps and change their launcher order.
Check compatibility before you connect
Compatibility is determined by the specific phone, software edition, vehicle or stereo, and market—not simply by the vehicle brand or the fact that an app is installed on your phone. Android Auto features and menu labels can also change with phone and vehicle software updates.
Phone requirements for wired Android Auto
- Android 9.0 (Pie) or newer.
- An active mobile-data plan.
- A compatible vehicle or aftermarket stereo.
- A high-quality USB cable that fits both the phone and the vehicle’s USB port.
Android Auto is integrated into supported phones. If a compatible phone asks to update Android Auto during setup, accept the update shown on the phone. Android (Go edition) devices are not supported.

Phone requirements for wireless Android Auto
- A compatible Android phone with an active data plan.
- 5 GHz Wi-Fi support on the phone.
- Android 11.0 or newer for the broad wireless-phone requirement stated by Google’s current requirements page.
- A car or stereo that specifically supports wireless Android Auto.
Wireless projection is not established by ordinary Bluetooth audio pairing alone. The vehicle, phone, and their software must support Android Auto’s wireless projection function.

Verify the vehicle, not just the make
Manufacturers can support Android Auto on some model years, trims, head units, or regional versions but not others. Look up the compatibility information for your exact vehicle or stereo, then check the owner’s manual for the correct USB port and pairing procedure. If your car does not appear in the manufacturer’s compatibility information, do not assume that another vehicle from the same brand will behave the same way.

Neither connection method is documented here as universally faster, more reliable, or cheaper. Choose the method that your particular phone and vehicle support.
Prepare the car and phone safely
Google’s Android Auto Help gives a specific safety instruction: “Make sure your car is in park (P) with the infotainment system turned on, and allow time to set up Android Auto before you start your drive.” Treat the initial setup as a stationary task, not something to complete on the road.

- Put the vehicle in Park and turn on the infotainment system.
- Have the phone unlocked and available before you begin.
- For a cable connection, identify the phone connector and the car’s USB-port type before buying or substituting a cable.
- For wireless setup, turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services before pairing.
- Use the vehicle manual or manufacturer instructions when the car’s pairing controls differ from the general process below.
Set up Android Auto with a USB cable
Wired projection is the most direct setup when the car supports Android Auto through USB. The cable must carry a suitable data connection; a cable that only charges may not start projection.

- Park and power the system. Put the car in Park (P), turn on the infotainment system, and leave the vehicle stationary while setup finishes.
- Connect the correct ports. Plug the phone into the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port with a high-quality USB cable. The exact connector ends depend on the phone and car, so confirm both ends before purchasing a replacement.
- Watch the phone and car screens. Accept the on-screen permissions and setup prompts. The phone may ask to update Android Auto before it can continue.
- Complete any vehicle prompts. Some vehicles ask you to select Android Auto from a projection or smartphone menu. Use the vehicle’s manual if the correct screen does not open automatically.
- Wait before driving. Allow the phone and infotainment system time to finish their first-run setup. Do not start driving while you are still accepting prompts.
If wired setup does not start
- Recheck that the phone meets the Android version, data-plan, and compatibility requirements.
- Try the vehicle’s designated Android Auto USB port rather than a charge-only port.
- Inspect the cable and replace it with a known high-quality data cable that fits both devices.
- Unlock the phone and respond to any permission or update request.
- Consult the vehicle manufacturer if the car never presents an Android Auto option after the phone and cable are known to be compatible.
These checks address connection and compatibility first; they do not turn an unsupported phone, port, or vehicle into a supported one.
Set up Android Auto wirelessly
Wireless setup uses Bluetooth for the initial pairing and then relies on the compatible phone-and-car wireless projection system. Keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services enabled during the first connection.
- Confirm wireless support. Verify that both the phone and the car or stereo support wireless Android Auto, and that the phone meets the active-data and 5 GHz Wi-Fi requirements.
- Park and turn on the infotainment system. Leave the car in Park while pairing and wait for the system to finish starting.
- Enable the required phone services. Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth menu. Put the car into its Bluetooth-pairing mode. On many vehicles, pressing and holding the steering-wheel voice-command button opens pairing; if that does not work, follow the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Pair the devices. Select the vehicle on the phone, compare any displayed codes, and accept the pairing prompts on both screens.
- Allow Android Auto to launch. After the first Bluetooth pairing, Android Auto should start within a few seconds on a compatible system. If it does not, follow the prompts on the phone or tap Android Auto on the car display.
Wireless setup failure points
- Bluetooth pairs, but Android Auto does not open: Bluetooth audio pairing by itself is not proof of wireless projection support. Recheck the vehicle’s Android Auto compatibility and use the Android Auto option on the car display.
- The phone cannot find the car: Confirm that Bluetooth is on, the vehicle is in its pairing mode, and the car is parked. Use the vehicle’s documented pairing sequence if the steering-wheel button does not open it.
- The car supports Android Auto only by cable: Use the wired procedure. A phone with 5 GHz Wi-Fi cannot add wireless projection to a vehicle that does not support it.
- Wireless requirements do not match the phone: Check the phone’s Android version and 5 GHz Wi-Fi capability. Android Go edition is not supported.
Customize which apps appear in the launcher
Launcher customization is performed on the phone, while the vehicle is safely parked. It controls the available app icons and their order; it does not convert an incompatible phone app into an Android Auto app.

Open Customize launcher
- Open Settings on the phone.
- Go to Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto.
- Tap Customize launcher.
Phone makers can change the exact path. If you do not see those labels, search the phone’s Settings for Android Auto.

Hide an app or option
Inside Customize launcher, hide apps or options that you do not use. Hiding removes the item from the launcher’s available icons; it does not uninstall the phone app or make the app unavailable on the phone itself.
Reorder launcher icons
In the same list, drag app names into the order you want. Put the apps you reach most often near the top so they are easier to find in the launcher. The list represents the Android Auto launcher, not every area of the vehicle interface.
Apply the changes in the car
Exit Android Auto and restart it after changing visibility or order. The car’s launcher may continue showing the old arrangement until Android Auto is restarted. If the order still does not change, close the projection session, reconnect the phone, and confirm that the phone saved the new launcher list.

Android Auto has more than one place where app-related controls can appear. The full launcher opens the available app icons and is the area affected by Customize launcher. The recent-app area is adaptive: it shows recently used navigation, media, and communication apps, plus one additional app.

Because the recent-app area is separate, changing launcher order does not pin an icon in every part of the car display. A recently used app can appear there even if it is not at the top of the full launcher, and an app can be present in the launcher without appearing in the adaptive recent area at that moment.
Show controls while another app is full-screen
To keep media controls and navigation directions visible while using a full-screen app, open Android Auto settings on the phone and enable Show quick controls for apps. The setting’s wording and availability can vary by software version, so search Android Auto settings if the label is different or absent.

Android Auto exposes only apps that implement its car interface. Navigation, messaging, and media apps are common categories in Google’s compatible-app listing, but an app installed on the phone is not automatically an Android Auto app.
- Open the Google Play Store on the phone.
- Look for Google’s Android Auto-compatible app list and sign in to a Google Account if the list requests it.
- Make sure personalization is turned on in Google Play; Google notes that this is required to see the complete compatible list.
- Install or update a compatible app on the phone.
- Reconnect or restart Android Auto, then check the launcher and its customization list.
App compatibility and availability can vary by phone, region, software version, and developer support. If an app does not appear in the compatible list, installing it from the Play Store does not guarantee that it will appear in the car.

Fix a compatible app that disappeared
Start by distinguishing an app that was never Android Auto-compatible from one that previously appeared and then vanished. The first case is an availability issue; the second can be caused by app state, phone settings, or a connection that has not refreshed.
Check the Android Auto app list first
Confirm that the app still appears in Google’s compatible-app listing and that it is installed and updated on the phone. Check Customize launcher to see whether it was hidden. Restart Android Auto after changing the list.
Samsung-specific unused-app behavior
Google documents one Samsung-specific explanation: the phone may temporarily disable an app that has not been used. Open the missing app on the phone to re-enable it, then reconnect Android Auto.
You can also look in the phone’s battery settings for Auto disable unused apps or Put unused apps to sleep and turn the relevant control off. Menu names vary by phone and software version. This is a documented Samsung case, not a universal diagnosis for every Android phone or every missing app.
If the app is visible on the phone but not in Android Auto
- Verify that the app supports Android Auto rather than only running on the phone screen.
- Check whether it is hidden in Settings > Connected Devices > Connection Preferences > Android Auto > Customize launcher.
- Open the app once on the phone if the phone may have disabled it as unused.
- Exit and restart Android Auto so the launcher can refresh.
- Confirm that the phone is connected through a compatible wired or wireless method.

If compatibility and the connection steps check out but the phone still will not connect over USB or Bluetooth, use Google’s Android Auto connection-troubleshooting guidance and contact the vehicle manufacturer for vehicle-specific behavior. The manufacturer is the appropriate source for port limitations, stereo menus, and model-year differences.
