The quickest way to use the Sony ULT TOWER 5 is to charge it, switch it on, and select ULT TOWER 5 in your phone’s Bluetooth settings. From there, Sony Sound Connect adds battery information, equalizer and lighting controls, input selection, Battery Care, STAMINA, karaoke functions and speaker-linking options. This guide covers the complete first-use sequence, every input, sound modes, microphone and party features, battery expectations, water protection and the fixes for common setup problems.
Before you start
The ULT TOWER 5 is Sony model SRS-ULT500. Have the supplied AC power cord ready, a Bluetooth phone or computer for the simplest setup, and the Sound Connect app if you want the advanced controls. For wired playback, use the cable type that matches both the source output and the speaker input. A karaoke setup additionally needs a separately purchased dynamic microphone with a standard 6.3 mm plug.
- The speaker weighs approximately 28 lb and measures about 14.09 × 21.02 × 11.02 inches, according to Sony USA’s current specification listing.
- Bluetooth is version 5.3. Sony lists SBC, AAC and LDAC codecs for the US model; the codec actually used depends on the transmitting device and its settings.
- The current Sony Help Guide is version 1 and is listed as released September 18, 2026. App labels and available functions can change with software updates.
First-time setup: charge, pair and play
1. Give the battery an initial charge
Connect the supplied AC cord to the AC input on the rear of the speaker and then to a wall outlet. Charge for more than one hour before your first use. Sony estimates about three hours for a full charge from empty when the speaker is powered off. Disconnect the cord only by removing it from the outlet and speaker as directed, then close the rear port cover.
2. Turn on the speaker
Press the power button. On its first use, the speaker automatically enters Bluetooth pairing mode; the Bluetooth indicator double-flashes. Sony’s Help Guide states: When you use the speaker for the first time after purchase, the speaker automatically enters pairing mode.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
3. Pair your phone or computer
- Place the phone within 1 m (3.2 ft) of the speaker.
- Lower the phone and speaker volume, or stop any current playback. This prevents a sudden loud output when the connection completes.
- Open the phone’s Bluetooth settings and turn Bluetooth on.
- Select ULT TOWER 5 from the available devices.
- Wait for the speaker’s connection notification and for the Bluetooth indicator to become steady.
Start music or another audio source on the phone. The speaker may reconnect to the last connected device automatically when that device’s Bluetooth is on. Pairing mode normally releases after about five minutes. If the device does not appear, press the speaker’s Bluetooth button to enter pairing mode again and repeat the steps.
4. Install Sound Connect when you need more controls
Bluetooth playback works without the app. Install Sony Sound Connect if you want to see remaining battery, choose an input, change sound effects or lighting, select Bluetooth sound-quality or connection-stability priority, assign the ULT button, or manage Battery Care, STAMINA and standby behavior. Sony also puts app-enabled party and karaoke controls in the app. Exact labels can move after an app update, so use the current label shown on your device rather than an older screenshot.
Use the ULT button and choose a sound mode
Sony provides four sound modes: ULT1, ULT2, FLAT and LIVE. The front ULT control handles the sound-mode function and volume; Sound Connect can change what the ULT button does and provides equalizer controls. Sony lists a 10-band custom equalizer in the app.
Recommended Free Tools
- FLAT: a neutral starting point when you want to judge the recording without an added ULT presentation.
- ULT1 and ULT2: enhanced-bass presentations intended for listeners who want more low-end impact. Start at a modest volume before increasing it.
- LIVE: an alternative presentation that can be selected or assigned to the ULT button through Sound Connect.
A practical sequence is to begin in FLAT at low volume, then compare ULT1 and ULT2 with the same song. Use the app’s equalizer for smaller adjustments instead of repeatedly changing the master volume. Environment optimization is available in Sound Connect, but Sony cautions that it may not work as intended in some surroundings; it should not be treated as a guarantee of room correction.

Choose the right physical input
Bluetooth for the fastest everyday playback
Bluetooth is the most convenient route for phones, tablets and computers. Pair as described above, then use the speaker controls or source device for volume. If a device offers a codec choice, remember that LDAC, AAC or SBC use depends on both ends of the connection and the selected quality or stability setting in Sound Connect.
USB-A for compatible audio files on a drive
- Prepare a USB Mass Storage Class device formatted with a FAT variant other than exFAT.
- Connect it to the speaker’s USB-A port.
- Turn the FUNCTION dial to USB-A.
Sony notes that some drives that appear to meet the stated requirements may still fail to work. An iPhone is not supported as a USB-A source. If a drive is not recognized, confirm its file-system format and that it is a genuine USB Mass Storage Class device, then try another compatible drive.
USB-C for USB Audio from a computer or phone
USB-C on this model is for USB Audio, not for reading files from a USB Mass Storage Class drive. Connect a USB-Audio-compatible computer or smartphone, then turn the FUNCTION dial to USB-C. If the source offers an audio-output selector, choose the ULT TOWER 5 as its USB audio device. A storage drive connected to this port will not work as a music library.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsRCA and XLR for line-level or DJ equipment
Sony lists RCA and XLR inputs for wired source equipment such as a mixer or other line-level device. Choose a cable only after checking the output connector on the source and the actual input connector on the speaker. Do not assume that a cable is correct because both ends look similar: verify whether the source is RCA or XLR and whether it provides the appropriate line-level signal. Select the corresponding input with the FUNCTION control.

USB ports for charging another device
The USB-A and USB-C ports can charge a phone or other device under Sony’s stated conditions. The Help Guide says that, in some regions or operating conditions, the speaker must be switched on and connected to AC for charging another device. This is not a universal power-bank promise. Keep the port covers closed when the ports are not in use and never charge where water may splash.
Set up karaoke
Karaoke requires a commercially available dynamic microphone with a standard 6.3 mm plug; Sony does not include the microphone. Insert the microphone into the matching microphone input, start your music source, and adjust the microphone and music levels using the speaker or app controls provided for your configuration.
Update Sound Connect before attempting karaoke. Sony says the update is required for Karaoke, DJ Control and Party Light. Availability can vary by region and app or speaker software version. The app supplies karaoke effects and scoring features, so an option that is absent may indicate an outdated app, outdated speaker firmware or regional availability rather than a wiring fault.

- Confirm the plug is the standard 6.3 mm size before connecting it.
- Begin with microphone and music levels low, then raise them gradually to avoid feedback or an unexpectedly loud signal.
Connect two or more Sony speakers
Stereo Pair: two-speaker playback
Stereo Pair is the two-speaker function for a left-and-right presentation. Treat it as a separate feature from Party Chain. Use two compatible speakers, update their software, and follow the current Stereo Pair instructions in Sound Connect or the Help Guide for the exact models. Do not assume that any two Sony Bluetooth speakers can form a pair simply because both support Bluetooth.

Party Chain: Auracast multi-speaker playback
Party Chain uses Auracast broadcast and supports up to 100 compatible speakers according to Sony. To start it, update all participating speakers and press the Party Chain button on each one as directed by Sony. Begin playback through the connected source speaker; the other linked speakers receive the broadcast.
The ULT TOWER 5 is Party Chain-compatible. Sony’s compatibility guidance lists the ULT TOWER MAX (SRS-ULT3000), ULT TOWER 7 (SRS-ULT700) and ULT TOWER 5 (SRS-ULT500) as Party Chain devices. Confirm the exact model and current firmware before buying or adding a second unit. Older speakers that use Party Connect or Wireless Party Chain cannot be mixed into Party Chain. Those are different linking systems, not interchangeable names for the same mode.
| Feature | What it is for | Compatibility point |
|---|---|---|
| Stereo Pair | Two speakers working as a stereo pair | Use two models supported by the current Sony instructions and software |
| Party Chain | Auracast broadcast to a larger group | Up to 100 compatible speakers; Party Connect and Wireless Party Chain models cannot be mixed in |
Understand the battery figures
Runtime depends heavily on volume, lighting, sound mode, temperature, music and Battery Care. Sony’s figures are manufacturer estimates, not a guaranteed duration for every use.
| Published runtime | Conditions Sony specifies |
|---|---|
| Approximately 20 hours | Help Guide estimate with Bluetooth connected, volume 16, ULT1 or ULT2 selected, Battery Care off and lighting deactivated |
| Approximately 12 hours | Help Guide estimate with Bluetooth connected, volume 16, ULT1 or ULT2 selected, Battery Care off and lighting activated |
| Approximately 2 hours | Help Guide estimate at volume 50 with lighting activated, Bluetooth connected, ULT1 or ULT2 selected and Battery Care off |
| Approximately 3 hours to recharge | Full charge from empty while the speaker is powered off |
Sony’s US product page gives the 20-hour headline under a slightly different test description: ULT1 or ULT2 on, volume 17 and lighting off. Keep that qualification with the number; do not combine it with the Help Guide’s volume-16 figure. Sony also says actual duration varies with volume, songs, temperature and how the speaker is used.
Best Value

- Powerful Pass-Through Charging: Supports up to 85W pass-through charging so you can power up your laptop while you use the hub. Note: Pass-through charging requires a charger (not included). Note: To achieve full power for iPad, we recommend using a 45W wall charger.
- Transfer Files in Seconds: Move files to and from your laptop at speeds of up to 5 Gbps via the USB-C and USB-A data ports. Note: The USB C 5Gbps Data port does not support video output.
- HD Display: Connect to the HDMI port to stream or mirror content to an external monitor in resolutions of up to 4K@30Hz. Note: The USB-C ports do not support video output.
- What You Get: Anker 332 USB-C Hub (5-in-1), welcome guide, our worry-free 18-month warranty, and friendly customer service.
Battery Care and STAMINA
Battery Care limits the maximum charge to about 90 percent to help extend battery life. You get less playback time per charge, but the setting can make sense when the speaker spends much of its life connected to power. STAMINA reduces power consumption by changing sound-effect and lighting behavior. Sony says ULT POWER SOUND effects and lighting are turned off when STAMINA is enabled.
Place and protect the speaker correctly
Sony rates the speaker IPX4 for water protection when it is placed vertically and all ports and covers are firmly closed. IPX4 does not make the speaker waterproof, and it does not protect an open connector.
- Keep the speaker upright when relying on the IPX4 rating.
- Close the rear cover securely after disconnecting the AC cord or finishing with a USB, RCA or XLR connection.
- Do not charge where water can splash.
- Treat the supplied AC cord and other accessories as not water resistant; Sony specifically cautions that supplied accessories and ports or jacks are not water resistant.
- Dry the exterior and check the covers before reconnecting power or cables.
Troubleshoot the common first-use problems
The phone cannot find ULT TOWER 5
- Move the phone within 1 m of the speaker.
- Press the Bluetooth button to re-enter pairing mode; the original mode may have timed out after about five minutes.
- Turn Bluetooth off and back on in the phone, then search again.
- Reduce volume or stop playback before reconnecting.
The speaker connects but there is no sound
- Confirm that the phone or computer is sending audio to ULT TOWER 5 rather than its built-in speaker or another Bluetooth output.
- Raise both the source volume and speaker volume gradually.
- Check the selected input. A USB, RCA or XLR selection will not play Bluetooth audio until you switch back to the Bluetooth source.
- If the problem follows an app setting, check Sound Connect’s input and Bluetooth priority choices.
A USB drive is rejected
Verify that it is a USB Mass Storage Class device and uses a FAT variant other than exFAT. Try another drive if the first one still fails; Sony warns that nominal compatibility does not guarantee that every drive will operate.

USB-C playback does not start
USB-C accepts USB Audio, not USB Mass Storage Class storage. Confirm that the computer or smartphone supports USB Audio, select the speaker as its output, and set the FUNCTION dial to USB-C.
Karaoke or Party Chain options are missing
Update Sound Connect and every participating speaker. Check the exact model, region and current software version. Karaoke, DJ Control and Party Light require the app update, while Party Chain requires compatible Auracast-capable models; older Party Connect or Wireless Party Chain speakers will not join it.
A reliable everyday routine
- Keep the speaker upright with the rear cover closed when no cable is connected.
- For ordinary listening, turn it on and let the last Bluetooth device reconnect, or select the desired input with the FUNCTION control.
- Start at low volume and use FLAT as a neutral reference before trying ULT1, ULT2 or LIVE.
- Check Sound Connect when you need battery status, lighting, equalizer, Battery Care, STAMINA or connection-priority settings.
- Use the runtime conditions above when planning a long session; lighting and high volume can reduce the estimate sharply.
- After wired playback, disconnect the cable, close the cover and keep the speaker away from splash while charging.
Following that sequence keeps the ULT TOWER 5’s connection method, sound controls, inputs, party features and battery expectations aligned with Sony’s documented behavior, without treating a conditional feature or runtime estimate as universal.
