Rambler is Gemini-powered voice input built into Gboard. On eligible Pixel 11 series phones, it turns speech into formatted text, adds punctuation and capitalization, and lets you ask for spoken rewrites or corrections. To use it, set the latest Gboard release as your default keyboard, allow Gboard to use the microphone, and keep an internet connection available for its full feature set.
This guide follows Google’s documented setup for Rambler. Google names the Pixel 11 series as the supported device family; it does not establish that Rambler is available on every Android phone or provide an officially supported installation workaround for other models.
What Rambler does
Standard dictation aims to transcribe your words. Rambler adds a language-processing layer: it can clean up a spoken thought, insert punctuation and capitalization, and respond to natural requests to revise text that is already in the typing field. You can dictate a paragraph, ask for a shorter or more professional version, change a particular word, or request an emoji without leaving the app.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThe feature is still voice input, not an independent writing app. You start it from Gboard while another app has an active text field, and the resulting text is delivered to that field. Google cautions that the output can be wrong, so review anything important before sending or saving it.
#1 Best Overall
- Google Pixel’s iconic design meets the latest evolution of the Pixel Camera on the new Pixel 11; Gemini Intelligence helps manage details so you can stay perfectly present[1]
- Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan: Works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers[2]
- Sleek, solid, and built to last: Pixel 11 has the slimmest camera bar yet in its class, a smooth satin back, and ultra-durable glass and IP68 water and dust protection, so it’s intentionally built to stay strong for years[3,4]
- Long battery life: With 30+ hours of reliable power and upgraded wireless charging, your Google Pixel 11 can charge 25% faster than before[5,6]; it even powers up to 55% in about 30 minutes with ultra-fast wired charging[7]
- The latest evolution of the Google Pixel Camera: Take super crisp closeups with an upgraded 30x Super Zoom[3]; Night Sight takes clear photos, portraits, and panos in low-light settings
That distinction matters when you decide how to speak. With ordinary dictation, the words you say are the main target. With Rambler, you can first provide the content and then give a second spoken instruction about how the existing text should look. For example, you can dictate a rough message, then ask for a more professional version. The second request is an editing instruction, not additional wording to append.
Eligibility and requirements
Google’s Rambler instructions specify the following prerequisites:
- Device: a phone in the Pixel 11 series. Google’s page does not provide a country-by-country model list, so availability for a particular regional variant should be confirmed on the device itself.
- Keyboard: the latest available Gboard version installed and selected as the default keyboard.
- Microphone access: Gboard must have permission to use the phone’s microphone.
- Connectivity: an active internet connection is needed for the complete Rambler experience, especially advanced rewrites and conversational editing.
Accessories are not required. The setup guide does not identify a special headset, subscription, or separate Rambler application.

Keep Gboard updated, use it as the active keyboard, and check that the microphone permission applies to Gboard rather than assuming a different app’s permission covers it.
Set up Rambler in Gboard
- Check the prerequisites. Confirm that the phone is a Pixel 11 series model, Gboard is current and the default keyboard, and microphone access is enabled for Gboard. Connect to the internet if you want all features.
- Open a text field. Launch an app that accepts text, such as Gmail or Google Messages, and tap the field so Gboard appears.
- Open voice input. Tap the microphone button on Gboard.
- Complete first-use setup. If an introduction dialog appears, tap Start.
- Select Rambler when no introduction appears. Open Gboard’s Menu > Settings > Voice typing, then choose Rambler.
- Return to the text field. Tap the microphone again if necessary, then begin speaking.
The first-use dialog and the Voice typing menu are two paths to the same selection. If Rambler is already selected, you can begin dictating as soon as the microphone is active.
If you are setting it up before writing a message, opening any ordinary text field is enough; Gmail and Google Messages are examples, not exclusive requirements. The important part is that the cursor is active in a place that accepts keyboard input. After selecting Rambler, return to that field and verify that the microphone control is available before beginning a longer dictation.
How to tell which mode is selected
The Voice typing settings identify the available choices, including Rambler and Standard voice typing. If the introduction does not appear, do not keep waiting for it: open Menu > Settings > Voice typing and select the mode you want directly. You can use the same menu later to change modes without deleting text that is already in an app.

Speak in a normal conversational voice rather than spelling every word. Rambler processes the audio and places the resulting text in the active field. It is useful to keep a thought coherent, because the service is designed to clean up spoken material rather than require you to dictate punctuation symbols one by one.
Use the tap-to-start method
- Tap the Gboard microphone.
- Speak the sentence or paragraph you want to enter.
- Tap Done when you want to pause or stop.
- Wait for the processed text to appear in the field, then read it before sending.
Tapping Done is the explicit end point for this method. Use it when you have finished a complete thought or need to pause and inspect what was inserted. The text is delivered to the field after processing, so keep the correct field active while you dictate.

Use press-and-hold dictation
- Press and hold the microphone button while speaking.
- Release the button when the utterance is complete.
- Review the text that Gboard inserts.
The two methods differ only in how you control the recording: tapping lets you speak and then choose Done, while holding the button ends the capture when you release it. Choose the method that makes it easiest to know exactly when an utterance has ended; neither method removes the need to proofread the result.
Use punctuation and formatting naturally
Rambler’s documented cleanup includes punctuation and capitalization. You can therefore concentrate on the words and let the feature structure ordinary sentences, then check whether the final breaks and marks match your intent. For a long message, dictate in coherent sections and review each delivered section before moving on. This makes it easier to spot a missing name, number, or phrase than waiting until an entire document is complete.
Edit text with natural voice requests
Rambler can work on text that is already in the field. After dictating, use the microphone and state the change you want in ordinary language. Google’s examples include:
- Ask for a more professional rewrite.
- Ask for a shorter version.
- Tell Rambler to change a specific word.
- Request an emoji.
These requests are conversational edits, not literal dictation. For example, a request to make a message more professional asks Rambler to rewrite the existing wording; saying the same sentence in Standard voice typing would simply insert the words you spoke. Inspect the result because a rewrite can alter meaning or tone.
A useful sequence is to dictate first, read the delivered text, and then issue one clear editing request. If the requested change is limited to one word, identify that word plainly. If you ask for a shorter or more professional version, compare the result with your original so that an important qualification or detail has not disappeared.
Correct a small error on screen
You do not have to re-dictate an entire message. Tap the incorrect word or phrase in the text field and correct it with the keyboard. This is useful for names, numbers, addresses, and other details that deserve a manual check even when the surrounding sentence is accurate.
Manual correction is also the dependable fallback when a spoken edit produces an unsuitable result. You can select the affected text, type the intended wording, and continue using Rambler for later content. Switching modes does not remove text already placed in the field.
Languages and switching mid-sentence
Google lists support for Arabic, English, French, German, Hindi and other supported Indian languages, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Spanish. The documentation also says that a speaker can switch languages naturally within a sentence. The exact language behavior can depend on the languages available in the current Gboard configuration.
If a mixed-language phrase is transcribed incorrectly, repeat that phrase clearly or edit it on screen. For critical names and terms, visual proofreading remains necessary regardless of language. Before a multilingual dictation, make sure the relevant languages are available in your Gboard configuration; the documented feature does not promise every possible language combination.

What works without an internet connection
Rambler does not become completely unavailable offline. Google says that basic cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization continue to work without connectivity.
Advanced style rewrites and complex conversational voice editing require a connection. If the network is lost while you are dictating, Google says a Retry button appears after the input. Tap Retry to submit that input for offline processing. Once connectivity returns, the advanced connected capabilities can resume.
| Task | Offline behavior |
|---|---|
| Basic transcription and text delivery | Can be submitted for offline processing when the Retry option is offered. |
| Cleanup, punctuation, and capitalization | Remain available according to Google’s offline description. |
| Style rewrites, such as making text shorter or more professional | Need connectivity. |
| Complex conversational edits | Need connectivity. |
If you need a connected rewrite immediately, restore the connection and issue the request again rather than assuming an offline result includes the same advanced processing. Offline support therefore covers the basic shape of the text, not every Gemini-powered transformation available when the phone is connected.
Rambler versus Standard voice typing
Both modes are selectable in Gboard’s Voice typing settings. The choice depends on whether you want direct transcription or assistance shaping the text.
| Characteristic | Rambler | Standard voice typing |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Transcribes speech while cleaning and structuring it. | Provides conventional word-for-word voice input. |
| Spoken revisions | Supports requests such as shorter, more professional, or a changed word. | Does not provide the Rambler conversational-editing workflow. |
| Punctuation and capitalization | Included in the documented cleanup behavior. | Uses the standard voice-typing behavior for the keyboard. |
| Connectivity | Full advanced features require internet access; basic offline processing remains. | Not described by Google’s Rambler page as using Rambler’s connected rewrite features. |
| Best fit | Drafting messages and notes when you want the spoken material cleaned up or revised. | Entering exactly what you say with minimal transformation. |
Use Rambler when you want the keyboard to help shape a draft after you speak. Use Standard voice typing when preserving your spoken wording with minimal transformation is more important than conversational cleanup. Neither choice eliminates proofreading, and the documented Rambler setup does not establish that either mode is available on every Android device.

- Open Gboard in any text field.
- Go to Menu > Settings > Voice typing.
- Select Standard voice typing.
You can return to Rambler later through the same menu. Changing the mode affects the keyboard’s voice-input behavior; it does not delete text already placed in an app.
Privacy and temporary processing
Google states that Rambler temporarily processes your text, audio input, and corrections to voice output. Its help page says the data is “never saved, stored, or shared” and is deleted immediately after the text is delivered.
This statement describes Google’s documented handling for Rambler. You should still apply normal care to sensitive material: verify the recipient before sending a message, and remove confidential text from the field if you decide not to use it. The privacy statement concerns Rambler’s processing; it does not change the fact that the destination app may retain a message after you send or save it.
Accuracy, usage limits, and responsible review
Rambler can mishear words, choose an unintended punctuation mark, or produce an unsuitable rewrite. Google’s own warning is: “Rambler can make mistakes, so double-check it.” Read the full result before sending an email, message, form, or work document, with extra attention to names, dates, amounts, links, and instructions.

Google says Rambler is subject to usage limits. The cited help page does not state a numeric quota or a reset schedule, so there is no reliable number to plan around. If the feature stops accepting requests, check for any message shown by Gboard and try again later; do not assume that a particular daily allowance applies.
For high-stakes text, treat voice input as a drafting aid rather than an automatic finalizer. Compare a rewritten version with the original, confirm that a requested emoji or changed word is appropriate, and read the complete field even if the first sentence looked correct.

Rambler is not shown in Voice typing
Confirm the documented device and keyboard prerequisites, then reopen Gboard’s Menu > Settings > Voice typing. If the phone is not in the Pixel 11 series, Google’s instructions do not establish Rambler support for it. The help page also does not endorse unofficial modified keyboard packages or installation workarounds.
The first-use Start dialog never appears
This is not necessarily an error. Google’s instructions provide a second path: open Menu > Settings > Voice typing and select Rambler directly.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The microphone does nothing
Make sure Gboard has microphone permission and that another app or system setting is not blocking microphone access. Return to a normal text field, reopen Gboard, and tap its microphone again. If permission was just granted, closing and reopening the text field can make the control available.
No text appears after speaking
Use Done to finish a tap-to-start recording, or release the microphone in press-and-hold mode. Allow a moment for processing, then inspect the active text field. If connectivity was interrupted and a Retry button appears, tap it to submit the input for offline processing.
A rewrite request does not work offline
That behavior matches Google’s documented limits: advanced rewrites and complex conversational edits need connectivity. Reconnect and issue the request again, or edit the wording manually with the keyboard.
The transcription is wrong
Correct the individual word or phrase on screen, then continue. For a high-stakes message, read the entire passage rather than correcting only the visibly obvious error. You can also switch to Standard voice typing if you prefer direct word-for-word input over Rambler’s cleanup and rewriting.
Rambler stops accepting requests
Google confirms that usage limits apply, but does not publish a numeric quota or reset schedule on the documented help page. Look for a message in Gboard, verify your connection for advanced actions, and try again later instead of relying on an assumed daily limit.

A practical workflow for reliable results
- Open the destination app and place the cursor in the correct text field.
- Choose Rambler from Gboard’s Voice typing settings if it is not already selected.
- Dictate one coherent thought at a time, using normal speech.
- Finish with Done or release the microphone.
- Read the inserted text and fix names, numbers, and other details manually.
- Use a spoken request for a shorter or more professional rewrite only when an internet connection is available.
- Proofread the final version before sending or submitting it.
This workflow keeps Rambler’s useful cleanup and editing features while preserving a manual check at the point where transcription errors matter most. If the network drops, use Retry for the available offline processing, then reconnect before asking for an advanced rewrite.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which Android phones support Rambler voice typing?
Google’s documented instructions specify Pixel 11 series phones. They do not establish Rambler support for every Android phone or provide an officially supported workaround for other models.
