On the HMD 2660 Flip Senior Edition, Mary is built into the phone through inTouch. You activate the service by scanning the QR code—or visiting the website—printed on the card in the box, then open the Mary icon and press the call button. You do not download an app or create a separate password. HMD lists a five-hour introductory conversation trial; continuing costs €19.90 per month on its international product page (HMD Global, 2026), and no automatic charge occurs unless you choose to subscribe.
What you need before starting
The instructions in this guide apply specifically to the HMD 2660 Flip Senior Edition, the model HMD documents with Mary, an AI companion from inTouch. Have these items ready:
- The phone, its battery and back cover.
- A compatible nano-SIM and an active mobile service. Your operator’s network, coverage and charges determine whether the phone can connect; universal carrier compatibility is not established here.
- The activation card supplied in the box. It contains a QR code and a website address.
- A way to read the QR code, such as another phone or computer, if you do not want to use the HMD phone’s camera.
- Optionally, a fast, compatible microSD card of up to 32 GB. HMD recommends this capacity limit for the documented storage option.
Before activating Mary, put the phone somewhere with reliable mobile reception and enough battery for the setup conversation. The activation process itself is described by HMD as taking only a few minutes, but the time needed to read the terms or complete a subscription decision is separate.
Insert the nano-SIM and switch on the phone
HMD’s phone guide specifies a nano-SIM. The contact area faces down when the card is inserted. Follow this sequence:

- Turn the phone over and remove the back cover according to the phone’s physical tabs or notches.
- Remove the battery if it is already installed and accessible.
- Place the nano-SIM in its slot with the metallic contact area facing down. Align the cut corner with the shape of the slot; do not force the card.
- Reinstall the battery, then replace the back cover securely.
- Press and hold the power key until the phone switches on.
If you are adding storage, install an optional compatible microSD card while the back cover and battery are accessible. HMD recommends a fast card up to 32 GB; the recommendation does not mean that every 32 GB card is guaranteed to work. Use a card identified as compatible for the phone and follow its slot markings.
Activate Mary without installing an app
Mary is activated from the material supplied with the phone rather than from an app store. The activation flow is:
- Find the card included in the box.
- Scan its QR code, or type the website address printed on the card into a browser.
- Complete the activation instructions shown on that page.
- When activation finishes, return to the HMD phone. HMD says Mary is then ready to use.
No app download is required, and HMD says no password is required for Mary. Keep the card after activation: it is the reference for the official activation site if you need to set up the service again or explain the process to a family member.
If the card or QR code is difficult to use
Use the printed website instead of the QR code. A QR scan is only a shortcut to the activation page; it is not a separate requirement. Check that the characters in the printed address are entered exactly, including punctuation and hyphens if present. If the address is damaged or unreadable, contact the seller or HMD support for the correct activation route rather than downloading an unverified Mary application. The official setup information does not establish a separate public download or a universal replacement link.
Open Mary and start a conversation
After activation, Mary is opened from the phone’s own menu:

- From the main menu, select the Mary icon.
- Press the phone’s call button.
- Wait for the greeting, then speak normally. HMD’s product description uses the greeting,
Hello, this is Mary.
This menu-and-call-button route avoids dialing a telephone number. Mary is not reached by entering a contact or manually typing a service number.
What HMD says Mary can do
HMD describes Mary as available around the clock for friendly conversation. Its product description says she can answer questions, discuss history and nature, share stories, play memory games and listen. HMD also says Mary can speak more slowly, allow extra time for a response and remember previous interactions.

Those are the manufacturer’s described capabilities, not an independent accuracy or reliability test. Treat answers as conversational assistance rather than as a substitute for a doctor, emergency service, financial professional or other qualified authority. For urgent danger, call the appropriate local emergency number instead of waiting for an AI response.
How to make the first exchange easier
- Start with a short sentence and one request, such as asking for a story or a memory game.
- Pause after Mary finishes speaking. The service is designed for spoken conversation, so overlapping speech can make an exchange harder to follow.
- If speech is too fast, ask Mary to speak more slowly. HMD specifically lists slower speech and additional response time among the companion’s features.
- State a topic again if the conversation changes direction. HMD says Mary can remember previous interactions, but that does not guarantee perfect recall of every detail.
Understand the trial, subscription and charges
HMD publishes the following terms for the international product page. The figures are attributed to HMD Global in 2026 and may be presented differently in another region or edition, so read the activation screen before accepting a paid continuation.

Choose what happens when the five hours are used
Watch the registered email address as the trial approaches its limit. You can subscribe if the service is useful, or allow the trial to expire. If you do nothing, HMD says there is no automatic charge. Save the subscription confirmation or cancellation message so the account holder can show what choice was made.

The €19.90 figure is a recurring monthly amount, not a one-time lifetime fee. HMD’s published international price does not establish the final amount in every country, local taxes, currency conversions, operator billing treatment or availability of the service in every market. Confirm the currency and total shown for your account before authorizing payment.

HMD states that conversations with Mary are encrypted and private. That is the published privacy description for the service.
The product information does not specify how long conversations are retained, where the underlying models are hosted, where data is processed, which vendors operate the infrastructure, or whether an independent security audit has been completed. Do not infer those details from the word “encrypted.” If a conversation could expose a medical record, financial credential, identity document, password or another sensitive secret, leave it out unless you have reviewed the current service terms and are comfortable with the disclosure.
For a shared household phone, decide who should be allowed to activate or subscribe. The registered email address receives the near-expiry message, so it should belong to the person responsible for the account rather than to an address that no one checks.
Accessibility and everyday use
The Senior Edition is aimed at straightforward operation. HMD highlights large buttons and a large screen, while Mary provides a dedicated menu entry and a call-button action rather than a number to dial. These choices reduce the number of steps for someone who finds app stores, passwords or small touch controls difficult.

- Keep the Mary icon in a familiar place in the main menu and write the two actions on a card: “Choose Mary, then press the call button.”
- Use Mary’s slower-speech request when the normal pace is hard to follow.
- Allow a pause for the user to answer; HMD says the companion can allow extra response time.
- Explain that “available around the clock” describes the service’s intended availability, not a guarantee that every mobile network, account or location will be connected at every moment.
Troubleshoot the setup
The QR code will not scan
- Use the website address printed on the same card instead of scanning.
- Increase the light on the card and hold the camera steady, without covering the code.
- Check every character if you type the address manually.
- Do not install a similarly named app from an unofficial source; HMD’s documented activation does not require an app.
The activation page opens, but Mary is not ready
Confirm that the activation steps were completed, not merely that the page was opened. Recheck the phone’s mobile connection and try the Mary icon again from the main menu. If the page reports an account or registration problem, use the support route supplied with the phone or the service’s current terms; the published product information does not provide a universal recovery procedure.
Mary’s icon is visible, but the call button does nothing
Make sure the icon is selected before pressing the call button. HMD’s documented sequence is menu selection first, call button second. If the phone has not been activated, complete the card-based activation before attempting the conversation. If the phone shows no network service, resolve the SIM or operator connection first; a Mary interaction still depends on the phone being able to reach the service.
You cannot hear or follow Mary
Move to a quieter place and hold the phone’s speaker or earpiece area clear. Ask Mary to speak more slowly and leave additional time between turns. If the phone itself has no sound in other functions, use the phone guide’s general audio troubleshooting or contact HMD support; the Mary product page does not publish a separate audio-repair procedure.
You received a subscription email you did not expect
Check whether the account holder selected continuation after the five-hour trial. HMD says the service does not charge automatically, so an unexpected paid continuation should be investigated through the inTouch message and the account’s subscription controls. Do not rely only on deleting the email; retain it while checking the account and any operator or payment statement.
You are worried about a private conversation
HMD’s stated protection is that conversations are encrypted and private. Because the published page does not state retention periods, hosting location or audit details, avoid sharing information that requires those assurances until you have reviewed the current privacy terms directly.

Network, SIM and phone-care limits
The phone guide requires a nano-SIM, while service performance depends on the operator and location. The available information does not establish universal compatibility with every carrier, roaming arrangement or data plan. Check the operator’s support for the exact HMD model and your region before relying on Mary as a primary communication method.
HMD’s product information also lists an IP54 rating under its laboratory conditions. That is not a promise of waterproofing: resistance can decrease with wear, and wet connectors should be dried before charging. Keep the phone dry around the SIM, battery and charging areas, and follow the phone’s care guidance after exposure to moisture.
