To turn on Mac Dictation, open Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation, switch Dictation on, and select a microphone, language, shortcut, and punctuation behavior. Then place the cursor in any text field and press the configured shortcut, the Microphone key, or choose Edit > Start Dictation.
This guide explains the complete setup, spoken punctuation and formatting commands, language switching, privacy choices, microphone fixes, and the difference between Dictation and Voice Control.
What Mac Dictation does
Mac Dictation converts speech into text wherever you can normally type: a document, message, search box, form, note, or other editable field. It is a text-entry feature, not a general voice-control system. You speak words and commands such as punctuation or a new paragraph, and macOS inserts the result at the active cursor.

Dictation is separate from Voice Control. Standard Dictation is intended for entering text. Voice Control is intended to operate the Mac with spoken commands, including actions normally performed with a keyboard, mouse, or trackpad. Apple states that standard Dictation is unavailable while Voice Control is turned on.

Turn on Dictation in System Settings
- Open the Apple menu and choose System Settings.
- Select Keyboard in the sidebar.
- Scroll to Dictation and turn Dictation on.
- If macOS asks you to confirm, select Enable.
- Choose the microphone that should capture your voice.
- Open the language controls and select the Dictation languages and regions you need.
- Set the keyboard shortcut you will use to start and stop Dictation.
- Decide whether to enable Auto-punctuation. When enabled, macOS can insert common punctuation such as commas, full stops, and question marks based on your speech.
The exact languages, regions, and features offered in this panel depend on language and regional availability. If a language or option is missing, it may not be supported for your Mac’s selected region rather than indicating a fault with the installation.
Choose the right microphone
The Dictation panel lets you select the audio input. Use the Mac’s internal microphone when it provides a clear signal. If your Mac has no usable internal microphone, connect an external microphone and select it in the relevant input settings. A USB headset with a microphone is a practical category of accessory when the room is noisy or echo-prone, or when the built-in input volume is too low. Apple’s troubleshooting guidance supports using a headset or external microphone for those situations; it does not require a particular brand or model.
Check the input level before testing
Open System Settings > Sound > Input and select the intended microphone. Check that the input level responds when you speak. Raise the input volume if the Mac does not appear to hear you. Selecting the device in Sound and selecting the same device for Dictation prevents a connected microphone from being present but unused.
Start, use, and stop Dictation
Start in any text field
Click where you want the words to appear. You can then start Dictation in any of these ways:
- Press the Mac’s Microphone key, if your keyboard has one.
- Press the Dictation shortcut configured in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
- Choose Edit > Start Dictation from the menu bar when that command is available.
A highlighted, pulsing cursor or a readiness tone indicates that Dictation is listening. Begin speaking at a normal pace and watch the insertion point so you can see where text is being placed.
Type while speaking on Apple silicon
On Macs with Apple silicon, Apple says you can continue using the keyboard while speaking. If you type temporarily, the cursor resumes dictation after you stop typing. This is useful for correcting a word, entering a name, or adding a short item that is easier to type than pronounce.

Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Speak punctuation, paragraphs, and formatting
Say punctuation by name rather than relying entirely on Auto-punctuation. For example, say “comma”, “apostrophe”, or “exclamation mark” at the point where the mark belongs.
Line and paragraph breaks
- Say “new line” to insert one Return.
- Say “new paragraph” to insert two Returns.
These commands are useful when dictating an outline, email, or multi-paragraph document because they place the break without reaching for the keyboard.
Auto-punctuation versus spoken punctuation
Auto-punctuation can insert common marks such as commas, full stops, and question marks automatically. It is controlled in System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation. Turn it off when you need exact control over punctuation, are dictating code or structured text, or find that automatic marks do not match your intended wording. With Auto-punctuation disabled, say the punctuation you want explicitly.
Capitalization, symbols, and emoji
Apple’s Dictation command reference includes commands for capitalization, symbols, and formatting. In supported languages, you can also speak an emoji command such as “heart emoji”. Availability of particular commands follows the language support for the selected Dictation language, so a command that works in one language may not be available in another.

Add a language and region
- Go to Apple menu > System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation.
- Find Languages and click Edit.
- Select the language and region you want to use.
- Leave multiple languages enabled if you regularly dictate in more than one language.
Language and feature availability varies by language and region. Auto-punctuation and other command features may not be offered for every selection.

Switch between enabled languages
When more than one language is enabled, switch by clicking the language indicator beside the cursor. On keyboards with a Globe key, you can also press the Globe key to change the active Dictation language. Confirm the indicator before speaking a passage that uses a different language; otherwise macOS may interpret the words using the currently selected language.
Privacy, processing, and audio-sharing choices
Dictation’s processing behavior can differ by language and configuration. Apple’s guide directs you to read the text below Dictation in the Keyboard settings to see whether an internet connection is required and whether general text Dictation is processed on the Mac or sent to Siri servers.
Choose whether to share recordings
During setup, macOS may offer Share Audio Recordings or Not Now. Choose according to your preference; declining the sharing option does not remove the Dictation controls from System Settings.

Change the sharing setting later
To revisit the choice, open System Settings > Privacy & Security > Analytics & Improvements > Improve Siri & Dictation. Apple also says stored audio interactions associated with a random identifier and less than six months old can be deleted. The setting and deletion controls shown on your Mac are the authoritative indication of what is available for your account and system version.
Dictation and Voice Control: choose the right feature
| Aspect | Standard Dictation | Voice Control |
|---|---|---|
| Primary purpose | Enter spoken words into a text field | Operate the Mac by voice |
| Availability relationship | Unavailable while Voice Control is on | Replaces ordinary keyboard, mouse, or trackpad actions with voice commands |
| Typical command scope | Punctuation, line breaks, capitalization, symbols, formatting, and supported emoji commands | System navigation and actions, in addition to voice-operated interaction |
Use Dictation when the destination is text and you want speech converted into that field. Use Voice Control when the task includes opening items, navigating the interface, selecting controls, or carrying out actions beyond text entry. If Dictation appears unavailable after Voice Control was enabled, turn Voice Control off before testing standard Dictation.
Fix Mac Dictation when it is not working
Work through the checks in order. Each one addresses a different failure point: activation, language, shortcut, input device, volume, or the acoustic environment.

1. Confirm that Dictation is enabled
Open System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and verify that the main Dictation switch is on. If it is off, enable it and accept the confirmation prompt. Test in a simple text field after the setting changes.
2. Verify the language and region
Return to the Dictation language editor and confirm that the intended language and region are selected. If the language is not listed, check whether it is supported for your region. A mismatch can produce incorrect transcription or make a desired language unavailable.
3. Check the shortcut
In the Dictation panel, review the configured shortcut and press that exact combination. If the shortcut conflicts with another command or is difficult to trigger, assign a different shortcut and test again. You can also bypass the shortcut by using the Microphone key or Edit > Start Dictation.
4. Select a working input device
If the Mac has no internal microphone, connect an external microphone. Then select it in System Settings > Sound > Input and in the Dictation microphone selector. A headset microphone is particularly useful when the built-in microphone is absent or when the speaker is far from the Mac.
5. Raise the input volume
With the intended device selected, open System Settings > Sound > Input and raise the input volume if the level meter barely moves or does not respond. Speak toward the microphone and check the meter again before changing Dictation languages or shortcuts.
6. Reduce noise and echo
Move to a quieter room, reduce nearby audio, and avoid placing the microphone beside a reflective wall or hard surface. In a noisy or echo-prone room, try a headset microphone. A closer microphone can give Dictation a cleaner voice signal than a distant built-in microphone.

7. Check whether Voice Control is enabled
Standard macOS Dictation is not available while Voice Control is on. If you need text-entry Dictation, disable Voice Control and then start Dictation with the configured shortcut or another activation method.
8. Watch for automatic timeout
Dictation stops after 30 seconds without detected speech. If the cursor or listening indicator disappears after a pause, start Dictation again and continue speaking shortly after it activates.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Microphone choices for Mac Dictation
Apple’s guidance supports choosing an input according to the problem you are trying to solve rather than buying a particular model.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
| Microphone option | Best fit | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Mac internal microphone | Quiet room and a Mac with a functioning built-in input | Input meter responds and the selected device is the internal microphone |
| USB headset with microphone | Noise, echo, a distant speaking position, or a missing internal microphone | Connect it, select it in Sound > Input and Dictation, and verify input volume |
| Other external microphone | Macs without a usable internal input or setups needing a separate microphone | Connection is recognized, the device is selected, and the input meter responds |
The connection type alone does not guarantee better transcription. Placement, input level, background noise, and echo all affect the voice signal that reaches Dictation.
A reliable first-use workflow
- Open System Settings > Keyboard > Dictation and enable Dictation.
- Select the language and region you will speak first.
- Select the microphone and confirm its level under System Settings > Sound > Input.
- Choose a shortcut that you can press without accidentally triggering another command.
- Decide whether Auto-punctuation suits the type of writing you do.
- Click inside a text field and start Dictation with the shortcut, Microphone key, or Edit > Start Dictation.
- Say a short test sentence containing a comma, a question mark, and “new paragraph.”
- Stop with Escape, the Microphone key, or the Dictation shortcut, then inspect the result.
- If the result is empty or inaccurate, check the input device and level before changing other settings.
Practical habits for more predictable results
- Wait for the highlighted, pulsing cursor or readiness tone before speaking.
- Say punctuation explicitly when the exact mark matters.
- Use “new line” and “new paragraph” rather than pausing and hoping macOS infers the layout.
- Keep the active language indicator visible when switching among enabled languages.
- Use a headset microphone when room reflections or background noise make the internal microphone unreliable.
- Remember that a long silent pause can end the session automatically after 30 seconds.
With those settings in place, Mac Dictation is ready anywhere macOS presents a field that accepts typed text. For whole-Mac navigation and actions, use Voice Control instead, remembering that it disables standard Dictation while active.
