On an Android tablet, connect a Bluetooth or compatible USB keyboard, then open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard. Select the connected keyboard to choose its layout and tap Keyboard shortcuts to see the combinations that your specific tablet supports. Android does not guarantee one universal shortcut list across every device, release, or app, so the on-device list is the authoritative reference.

What Android keyboard shortcuts are—and what this guide covers

Android keyboard shortcuts are key combinations handled by the operating system, an app, or the keyboard itself when a physical keyboard is connected. They can make text entry, navigation, and tablet commands faster than tapping the screen, but the available combinations depend on the tablet, Android release, keyboard layout, and the app in use.

Google’s clearest setup instructions are for Android tablets with a physical keyboard. The menus described below may be named differently, or may not appear at all, on a phone or on a device customized by its manufacturer. Treat the tablet’s own Keyboard shortcuts screen as the source of truth instead of assuming that a shortcut listed for another Android device will work on yours.

This guide covers Bluetooth pairing, wired USB connections, the physical-keyboard settings, finding your supported shortcuts, layout and modifier options, the relationship between a physical keyboard and Gboard, and Android’s physical-keyboard accessibility features.

  • 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)

  • 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)

Check the requirements before connecting a keyboard

  • An Android tablet: The documented menu path is for tablets. Confirm the Android version and the manufacturer’s support documentation if you are using a phone or a heavily customized interface.
  • A physical keyboard: A Bluetooth keyboard must support pairing. A USB keyboard needs a cable and ports or adapters that are compatible with both the keyboard and tablet.
  • Pairing instructions: Bluetooth keyboards enter pairing mode differently. Keep the keyboard’s manufacturer instructions nearby.
  • A supported Android release: Google notes that some tablet keyboard steps require Android 14 or later. Physical-keyboard accessibility options are documented for Android 16.0 and later.

You do not need a physical keyboard for ordinary on-screen typing. Gboard, Android’s on-screen keyboard, remains available when no external keyboard is connected. A physical keyboard is an optional accessory for users who prefer hardware keys, longer writing sessions, or keyboard-based navigation.

Pair a Bluetooth keyboard with an Android tablet

Pairing makes the keyboard available to the tablet over Bluetooth. Keep the keyboard close to the tablet during setup and make sure it has power.

  1. Put the keyboard into pairing mode using the keyboard manufacturer’s instructions. Some keyboards use a dedicated Bluetooth button; others require holding a key combination.
  2. On the tablet, open Settings.
  3. Tap Connected devices > Pair new device.
  4. Wait for the keyboard to appear under available devices, then tap its name.
  5. Complete any pairing prompt shown on the tablet or keyboard. If Android displays a code to type, enter it on the physical keyboard and press Enter.

After pairing, the keyboard should appear as a connected device. If it does not appear, return the keyboard to pairing mode and repeat the device scan. A keyboard that is already connected to another computer or tablet may need to be disconnected there first. For exact pairing behavior, use the keyboard’s own instructions rather than guessing which key activates pairing mode.

Connect a keyboard by USB

Google’s tablet guidance also recognizes a wired connection. Connect the keyboard with a compatible USB cable, port, or adapter. Android may recognize it immediately, after which it should appear in the physical-keyboard settings.

The tablet instructions do not establish model-by-model USB compatibility. If the keyboard is not detected, check the tablet and keyboard documentation for the required connector, adapter, and power arrangement. A cable that charges a device is not necessarily suitable for every data connection, and some tablet ports may require a specific adapter.

Apple EarPods Headphones with USB-C Plug, Wired Ear Buds with Built-in Remote to Control Music, Phone Calls, and Volume
  • SUPERIOR COMFORT — Unlike traditional circular ear buds, the design of EarPods is defined by the geometry of the ear. Which makes them more comfortable for more people than any other ear bud–style headphones.
  • HIGH-QUALITY AUDIO — The speakers inside EarPods have been engineered to maximize sound output and minimize sound loss, which means you get high-quality audio.
  • BUILT-IN REMOTE — EarPods with USB-C plug also include a built-in remote that lets you adjust the volume, control the playback of music and video, and answer or end calls with a pinch of the cord.
  • COMPATIBILITY — Works with all devices that have a USB-C port.
  • INTEGRATED MICROPHONE — A built-in microphone precisely captures your voice while you’re on the phone, taking a FaceTime call, or summoning Siri — so you’re always heard loud and clear.

Open the physical-keyboard settings

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
  3. Select the connected keyboard.
  4. Choose the layout that matches the keys printed on your keyboard.

The exact labels and available controls can vary with the Android release and device. If you cannot find Physical keyboard, connect the keyboard first, then search Settings for “physical keyboard” or “keyboard.” A manufacturer may place the same controls under a differently named system section.

Choose the correct keyboard layout

The layout setting tells Android how to interpret the keys. Select the layout that matches the keyboard you are actually using, not merely the language you most often type. A mismatch can make punctuation, symbols, and modifier combinations produce unexpected characters even though the keyboard is connected correctly.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Test a few keys in a text field after changing the layout. Check letters, number-row symbols, punctuation, and the keys you expect to use with shortcuts. If only certain symbols are wrong, revisit the selected layout before troubleshooting Bluetooth or the keyboard hardware.

View the shortcuts supported by your tablet

Android does not publish one complete physical-keyboard shortcut list that can be guaranteed across every tablet, Android version, and manufacturer interface. Google directs users to the device’s own list.

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
  3. Tap Keyboard shortcuts.
  4. Read the categories and combinations shown for that tablet.

Use this list whenever you need an exact combination. It reflects what the tablet exposes on that particular software build, rather than what another tablet, desktop operating system, or app happens to support. If a familiar combination is absent, do not assume that pressing it will have the same effect on Android.

Some shortcuts may be handled by the operating system, while others appear only when a particular app has focus. An app can also reserve a key combination for its own command. When a shortcut does nothing, first confirm that the tablet lists it, then check whether the correct app or text field is active.

Set the on-screen keyboard and modifier behavior

The Physical keyboard area includes more than the shortcut list. Depending on the Android version and tablet, you may see controls for the following.

Keep the on-screen keyboard visible

An option can keep the on-screen keyboard visible while a physical keyboard is connected. This is useful when you want hardware keys for text entry but still need to tap emoji, use an on-screen language control, or access a screen keyboard feature. Turn it on in the physical-keyboard settings if your tablet presents the option.

If you do not see this control, the setting may not be available on that Android release or manufacturer interface. Its absence does not mean the physical keyboard is faulty.

Change modifier-key behavior

The same settings area can include a control for changing modifier keys. Modifiers are keys such as Ctrl, Alt, Shift, or an Action key that alter what another key does. Select the available modifier setting and follow the labels shown by your tablet. Because the names and choices vary by release and device, record the selected behavior if several people use the tablet or if you switch between keyboards.

Use shortcuts without assuming a universal desktop list

Once the keyboard is connected, open the on-device Keyboard shortcuts list and keep it available while learning. Start with commands you will use repeatedly, such as navigation or text editing entries that your tablet actually displays. Practice them in a safe text field before relying on them in a document or form.

  • Check focus: A shortcut may work only when a text field, app window, or system screen has focus.
  • Check the layout: A different physical layout can change the key Android receives.
  • Check the modifier: A remapped Ctrl, Alt, Shift, or Action key changes the combination you need to press.
  • Check the app: App-specific commands are not evidence of a system-wide Android shortcut.
  • Check the tablet list again after an update: The available entries belong to the installed Android build and device configuration.

Do not promise yourself that a desktop shortcut will work system-wide simply because the same letters are used elsewhere. The documented Android tablet workflow provides a way to discover supported combinations, not a guarantee that every traditional desktop command exists.

Understand the difference between physical shortcuts and Gboard

Gboard is the on-screen keyboard. Its settings control typing options and language layouts for the software keyboard; they are separate from the physical-keyboard shortcut list in tablet settings.

Google’s Gboard documentation describes touch interactions such as:

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Move the cursor: Swipe across the space bar to move the insertion point.
  • Turn on caps lock: Double-tap Shift.

These are Gboard interactions, not a universal catalog of physical-keyboard shortcuts. They apply when you are using the on-screen keyboard and should not be presented as proof that the same gesture or key combination exists for a connected hardware keyboard.

To maintain the grip and prevent accidental falls, it's a good practice to periodically reapply pressure to the suction cup.

To configure Gboard, open its settings from the on-screen keyboard or from the tablet’s keyboard settings, then adjust the language and typing options shown there. Keep those changes conceptually separate from System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard, where Android manages the connected hardware keyboard.

Use physical-keyboard accessibility features on Android 16 and later

Google documents physical-keyboard accessibility settings as available on Android 16.0 and up. On a compatible tablet, open Settings > Accessibility > Physical keyboard accessibility to look for the available controls.

Sticky Keys

Sticky Keys lets you press and release a modifier before pressing the next key, rather than holding both keys at the same time. For example, a user can press and release a modifier such as Shift, Ctrl, Alt, or Action, then press the second key.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Google’s documented activation sequence is Action + Alt + 5 after Sticky Keys has been turned on in the physical-keyboard accessibility settings. The sequence is version-limited: check that the tablet is running Android 16.0 or later and that the setting appears before relying on it.

Slow Keys and Mouse Keys

The same Android accessibility documentation covers Slow Keys and Mouse Keys. Their availability is also documented for Android 16.0 and up. If these controls are missing, verify the Android version and the tablet manufacturer’s implementation rather than assuming the keyboard connection is the cause.

Android version and device limitations

Feature or instruction Documented availability What to verify
Some tablet keyboard setup steps Android 14 and up Confirm the tablet’s Android version before following a step that is absent.
Physical-keyboard accessibility settings, including Sticky Keys, Slow Keys, and Mouse Keys Android 16.0 and up Check Settings > Accessibility > Physical keyboard accessibility.

These version notes describe Google’s documented tablet instructions. They do not establish identical menus or shortcut combinations for every Android phone, tablet manufacturer, regional build, or app. If the path differs, use the device’s Settings search and the manufacturer’s documentation.

Troubleshoot a keyboard that will not work

The Bluetooth keyboard is missing from “Pair new device”

  • Put the keyboard back into pairing mode using its manufacturer instructions.
  • Make sure it has power and is not actively connected to another device.
  • Return to Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device and scan again.
  • If the keyboard still does not appear, consult the keyboard and tablet documentation for Bluetooth compatibility and reset instructions.

The keyboard is connected, but symbols are wrong

  • Open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
  • Select the keyboard and choose the layout that matches the printed key arrangement.
  • Test punctuation and number-row symbols in a text field.

A shortcut does nothing

  • Open the tablet’s Keyboard shortcuts list and confirm that the combination is supported.
  • Check that the intended app or text field has focus.
  • Verify the modifier-key behavior and selected layout.
  • Try the same combination in another context only to determine whether it is app-specific; do not treat success in one app as a system-wide guarantee.

The on-screen keyboard disappeared

Return to the physical-keyboard settings and look for the option to keep the on-screen keyboard visible. If the option is not offered, that release or device may not expose it. Gboard remains the separate on-screen keyboard, so its settings do not replace the physical-keyboard controls.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Accessibility controls are missing

Check the tablet’s Android version. Google documents physical-keyboard accessibility features only for Android 16.0 and later. On older releases, the absence of Sticky Keys, Slow Keys, or Mouse Keys is a version limitation rather than evidence that the keyboard failed to pair.

A practical setup checklist

  1. Confirm that the tablet and keyboard are compatible and that the keyboard has power.
  2. For Bluetooth, enable pairing mode and use Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device.
  3. For USB, use a compatible cable or adapter and check both devices’ documentation.
  4. Open Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard.
  5. Select the connected keyboard and choose the matching layout.
  6. Open Keyboard shortcuts and learn the combinations listed on that tablet.
  7. Decide whether to keep the on-screen keyboard visible.
  8. Review modifier-key behavior if your tablet offers that control.
  9. If you need Sticky Keys, Slow Keys, or Mouse Keys, check Settings > Accessibility > Physical keyboard accessibility on Android 16.0 or later.
  10. When a shortcut fails, check the device list, focus, layout, modifier setting, and app context before changing unrelated keyboard settings.

What to expect on an Android phone

The documented instructions target Android tablets. A phone may support a physical keyboard, but this material does not establish that every phone exposes the same pairing path, physical-keyboard page, shortcut list, or accessibility controls. Manufacturer software can rename, move, or omit settings.

On a phone, begin with the manufacturer’s instructions and the Settings search, then look for an entry corresponding to a connected or physical keyboard. Once you find it, use the device’s own shortcut list rather than copying combinations from a tablet or desktop guide. This avoids treating tablet-specific documentation as a universal phone specification.

Bottom line

For an Android tablet, pair the keyboard under Settings > Connected devices > Pair new device, configure it under Settings > System > Keyboard > Physical keyboard, and open Keyboard shortcuts to see the combinations that your device actually supports. Keep Gboard’s on-screen features separate from physical-keyboard shortcuts, and verify Android 14 or 16.0 requirements before relying on version-specific settings.
