To use Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) on AirPods Pro, first pair the earbuds with an Apple device and confirm that they are connected. Then wear the AirPods and press and hold either stem until you hear a chime, or select Noise Cancellation from the connected iPhone or iPad’s Control Centre. The modes and menu names available to you depend on your AirPods Pro model and operating-system version.
What you need before turning on ANC
Active Noise Cancellation is a listening mode, so the AirPods Pro must be connected before the mode control can appear or the stem gesture can work. Set up the earbuds with an Apple device using Apple’s pairing flow, then put one or both earbuds in your ears and verify that the device shows them as connected.
- AirPods Pro: Have the earbuds and charging case available and wear at least one earbud when you change listening modes.
- A compatible Apple device: An iPhone or iPad provides the most complete controls described here. Apple also documents mode switching from a connected Apple Watch or Mac.
- A completed pairing: After AirPods are set up with one Apple device, Apple says they can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account.
- Current, compatible software: Settings, labels and available modes can vary by AirPods Pro generation and operating-system version.
If the AirPods are not connected, connect them first rather than repeatedly pressing the stems. The listening-mode controls are presented for the active AirPods connection.
Pair and connect before changing a mode
Noise Cancellation is controlled by the AirPods connection, not by a general sound setting on the phone. Complete Apple’s normal pairing process first. Once setup is finished, place the earbuds in your ears and check that the iPhone or iPad identifies AirPods Pro as the current audio device.

This connection check matters when you own several headphones or speakers. If audio is still routed to the built-in speaker or another headset, the AirPods-specific Listening Mode control may not be shown. Select the AirPods as the active output, then reopen the controls.
Apple says AirPods configured with one Apple device can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. That makes it possible to move from an iPhone to an iPad or Mac without repeating the entire setup, but you should still verify which device currently has the active connection before changing modes.
What each AirPods Pro listening mode does
Apple describes Noise Cancellation as: “Blocks out external noise to help you focus.” That wording describes the purpose, not a promise that every sound will disappear. Voices, alarms and other sounds can still be audible, and the amount of reduction depends on the fit, the environment and the model.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Mode | What it does | Choose it when | Availability notes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Noise Cancellation | Reduces external sound so you can concentrate on what you are listening to. | You want less surrounding noise while listening. | Available as a listening mode on AirPods Pro; exact controls vary by model and software. |
| Transparency | Lets surrounding sounds pass through so you can hear what is happening around you. | You need awareness of nearby people, announcements or other environmental sounds. | Included in the standard listening-mode cycle on supported AirPods Pro. |
| Adaptive Audio | Combines Noise Cancellation and Transparency behavior and adjusts noise control as conditions change. | You want automatic adjustment instead of choosing a fixed level yourself. | Only specified newer AirPods models support it. It will not appear on every AirPods Pro generation. |
| Off | Turns off the available listening-mode processing. | You do not want Noise Cancellation, Transparency or an adaptive mode. | On some newer models, you must first enable Off in settings before it can be selected. |
For Apple’s descriptions of the modes and their controls, see Apple’s “Switch between listening modes” guide and Apple’s “Adjust listening mode settings” guide.
The practical distinction is simple: use Noise Cancellation when reducing outside sound is the priority, Transparency when awareness is more important, Adaptive Audio when you want supported earbuds to adjust automatically, and Off when you want neither of the available listening effects. The mode names are not interchangeable, so select the one that matches the situation rather than assuming ANC is always the best choice.
Turn on Noise Cancellation from the AirPods Pro stems
The quickest method is the pressure-sensitive stem on either earbud. You do not need to reach for the phone once the desired listening modes are assigned to the gesture.
- Put the AirPods Pro in your ears. Confirm that at least one earbud is connected to the Apple device.
- Press and hold the stem on either AirPod. Do not tap the stem; keep holding it until you hear the confirmation chime.
- Listen for the chime and continue listening. The AirPods have switched to the next mode in the configured cycle.
- Repeat the press-and-hold gesture to move through the other configured modes until Noise Cancellation is active.
Apple’s default press-and-hold behavior switches between Noise Cancellation and Transparency. Your AirPods may cycle through two or three modes instead, because the gesture can be customized. If the chime moves between modes without selecting Noise Cancellation, review the gesture settings described below.

Either stem can be used for the listening-mode action when that action is assigned to it. The chime confirms that the hold was recognized; it does not mean that every available mode has been selected. Continue holding again only after the chime has finished and listen for the next mode announcement or change.
Turn on Noise Cancellation from an iPhone or iPad
Control Centre gives you a direct selection rather than requiring you to cycle through modes.

- Active Noise Cancellation blocks outside noise, so you can immerse yourself in music
- Transparency mode for hearing and interacting with the world around you
- Spatial audio with dynamic head tracking places sound all around you
- Adaptive EQ automatically tunes music to your ears
- Three sizes of soft, tapered silicone tips for a customizable fit
- Connect the AirPods Pro to the iPhone or iPad and put the earbuds in your ears.
- Open Control Centre on the connected device.
- Touch and hold the volume control to expand the AirPods controls.
- Tap the Listening Mode control.
- Tap Noise Cancellation.
The control is available when the AirPods are the active audio output. If you see the device’s built-in speaker instead, reconnect or select the AirPods as the current output before looking for Listening Mode.
This direct method is useful when the stem is configured to cycle through several choices and you do not want to step through them one by one. It also lets you confirm the exact mode currently selected on the screen.

Apple also documents switching listening modes from an Apple Watch and a Mac when the AirPods Pro are connected to those devices. The exact control location and labels depend on the watchOS or macOS release, so use the listening-mode control shown for the active AirPods connection. The iPhone and iPad Control Centre path above is the most specific documented sequence in this guide.
The same connection rule applies: the Watch or Mac must be controlling the connected AirPods, not another audio output. If the AirPods are connected to a different Apple device, change the active output first, then look for the listening-mode control provided by that operating system.
Choose which modes the stem gesture cycles through
If you prefer the stem gesture but do not want to cycle through every available mode, change the two-mode or three-mode list in AirPods settings.
- On the iPhone or iPad paired with the AirPods, open Settings.
- Tap the name of your AirPods near the top of the settings screen.
- Find Press and Hold AirPods. If that heading is not visible, look under Controls & Gestures; Apple’s labels can change between operating-system versions.
- Select Left or Right to configure that earbud’s stem.
- Make sure the press-and-hold action is Listening Mode.
- Select the two or three listening modes you want the gesture to cycle through, including Noise Cancellation if you want ANC in the cycle.
You can configure the left and right stems separately. This lets you keep Listening Mode on one stem while assigning another supported action to the other, provided your model and software expose that choice.

A two-mode cycle is usually the simplest arrangement when you switch mainly between Noise Cancellation and Transparency. A three-mode cycle can include Adaptive Audio or Off when those options are supported and enabled. Adding a mode changes the sequence you hear after every press and hold, so review the selected list if the gesture appears to skip the mode you expect.
Use Noise Cancellation with only one AirPod
AirPods Pro includes an accessibility setting that can allow Noise Cancellation while only one earbud is being worn. Apple calls this Noise Cancellation with One AirPod. Availability depends on the particular AirPods Pro model and the operating system.
- Open Settings on the iPhone or iPad paired with the AirPods.
- Tap Accessibility.
- Tap AirPods.
- Select your AirPods Pro from the list.
- Enable Noise Cancellation with One AirPod, if the option is offered.
Apple provides equivalent controls for other supported devices, but the menu path and wording can differ. If the option is absent, check the AirPods Pro generation and software compatibility rather than assuming the earbuds are defective.

After enabling the setting, wear the single AirPod and use the normal stem or connected-device controls. The feature is an accessibility option, not a replacement for checking model support; Apple does not expose it on every combination of AirPods Pro hardware and operating system.
Let AirPods connect across your Apple devices
After the initial setup, Apple says AirPods configured with one Apple device can connect automatically to other Apple devices signed in to the same Apple Account. This is useful when you move from an iPhone to an iPad or Mac: select the AirPods as the active audio output on the new device, then use its listening-mode control.
Automatic connection does not remove the need to verify the active output. If another speaker or headset is selected, the AirPods-specific Listening Mode control will not be available until the AirPods are connected to that device.
When moving between devices, give the new device a moment to show the AirPods as connected before trying the stem or software control. The available mode list follows the AirPods model and the operating system currently controlling them, so a feature visible on one device may not appear in the same place on another.
Which mode should you use?
| Your immediate need | Mode to select | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Reduce surrounding sound while focusing on audio | Noise Cancellation | It is designed to block external noise and help you focus. |
| Hear people and environmental sounds without removing the earbuds | Transparency | It lets surrounding sounds through. |
| Move between quieter and noisier environments without manually changing modes | Adaptive Audio, if your model supports it | It adjusts noise control according to changing conditions. |
| Use neither listening-mode effect | Off, if your model exposes and has enabled it | It turns off the available listening-mode processing. |
There is no single best mode for every situation. Noise Cancellation is intended for reduced external sound, Transparency for awareness, and Adaptive Audio for automatic adjustment on supported newer models. Switch modes from the stems or from the connected device when your surroundings change.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →For example, Noise Cancellation may suit concentrated listening, Transparency may suit waiting for an announcement, and Adaptive Audio may suit a trip through environments that change repeatedly. These are usage choices, not claims about a particular level of noise reduction; Apple’s support descriptions explain the purpose of each mode but do not provide a universal percentage of sound blocked.
Why a mode or setting may be missing
AirPods Pro features are not identical across generations. A missing control is often a compatibility or configuration difference rather than a pairing failure.
- Adaptive Audio is absent: Apple limits this mode to specified newer AirPods models. Confirm the generation before looking for it in the mode list.
- Off is absent: Some newer models require you to enable Off in AirPods settings before it appears as a selectable mode.
- Noise Cancellation is not in the stem cycle: Open the AirPods settings, select the left or right stem, choose Listening Mode, and add Noise Cancellation to the two- or three-mode cycle.
- Listening Mode does not appear in Control Centre: Make sure the AirPods are connected and are the active audio output, then touch and hold the volume control again.
- One-AirPod Noise Cancellation is unavailable: Check the model and operating-system support for the Noise Cancellation with One AirPod accessibility setting.
- The press-and-hold gesture does nothing: Wear the AirPods and confirm the connection before trying the gesture. The setting may also have been assigned to another action under Controls & Gestures.
Apple’s listening-mode documentation directs readers to separate support information when Noise Cancellation does not work as expected. The specific diagnostic sequence is model- and software-dependent, so do not apply a generic fix without checking the instructions for your AirPods Pro version.
A practical setup checklist
- Identify the AirPods Pro generation and the Apple device’s operating-system version.
- Complete pairing and confirm that the AirPods appear as connected.
- Wear one or both earbuds before changing a listening mode.
- Use the stem hold and wait for the chime, or open Control Centre and select Listening Mode.
- Choose Noise Cancellation directly, or add it to the stem’s two-mode or three-mode cycle.
- Enable Adaptive Audio or Off only if those choices are offered for your model.
- For single-ear use, look under Settings > Accessibility > AirPods for Noise Cancellation with One AirPod.
- When changing devices, verify that the AirPods are the active output before searching for controls.
This sequence separates connection issues from feature-availability issues. Pairing determines whether the controls can communicate with the earbuds; generation and software determine which controls are available after the connection is established.

Keep the generation and software in mind
Apple’s interfaces evolve. One version may show the AirPods name directly in Settings, while another places the same controls under Controls & Gestures. Likewise, a feature described in Apple’s guide may be limited to a newer AirPods Pro model. When a step does not match your screen, identify the AirPods Pro generation and the operating-system version first, then compare the available controls with Apple’s current documentation.
The central controls remain consistent: connect the AirPods, wear them, press and hold a stem to cycle through configured modes, or open the connected device’s Listening Mode control and choose Noise Cancellation. The model and software determine which additional choices appear around those controls.
Frequently asked questions
Can I turn on Noise Cancellation without using my iPhone?
Yes. Once the AirPods are connected and the press-and-hold action is assigned to Listening Mode, press and hold either stem until the chime and cycle to Noise Cancellation. An iPhone or iPad is useful for selecting a mode directly and editing the cycle, but it is not required for every change.
Do both AirPods have to be in my ears?
No. Apple documents a Noise Cancellation with One AirPod accessibility setting for supported AirPods Pro models. Without that setting, availability can depend on the model and software. Wear at least one connected AirPod before attempting to change a mode.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEFix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Why does pressing the stem switch to Transparency instead?
The default press-and-hold action cycles between Noise Cancellation and Transparency. If your AirPods are configured with two or three modes, the gesture moves to the next selected mode in that list. Open the AirPods settings, choose the left or right stem, confirm Listening Mode is assigned, and include Noise Cancellation in the selected cycle.
Does Noise Cancellation eliminate every sound?
No. Apple describes it as blocking external noise to help you focus, not as making every sound disappear. The mode is intended to reduce surrounding sound; Transparency has the opposite goal of allowing surrounding sounds through.
Why can’t I find Adaptive Audio?
Adaptive Audio is limited to specified newer AirPods models. It will not appear simply because an older AirPods Pro is paired with a newer iPhone. Check the AirPods generation and the operating-system support for that feature.
How do I get an Off option?
Off is available only where the model and software expose it. Apple says some newer models require you to enable Off in AirPods settings before it becomes a selectable listening mode.
Can I change modes from a Mac or Apple Watch?
Apple documents listening-mode switching from a connected Mac and Apple Watch. The exact location and wording depend on macOS or watchOS, so look for the listening-mode control while the AirPods are the active audio output.

What should I do if the Listening Mode control is missing?
First verify that the AirPods are connected and selected as the active output. Then reopen the volume control in Control Centre. If a feature is still absent, compare the AirPods Pro generation and operating-system version with Apple’s current compatibility information rather than assuming the earbuds need a generic repair.
