A tablet can use Wi-Fi without a Verizon cellular plan. To use Verizon mobile data, it must have cellular hardware, be compatible with Verizon’s network, and have an appropriate active plan. The steps depend on the tablet model and whether you want Wi-Fi, cellular service, or both.
Choose how your tablet will connect
Wi-Fi and cellular service are separate connections. A Wi-Fi-only tablet can connect to a home or public Wi-Fi network, but it cannot use Verizon cellular data. A cellular-capable tablet can use Wi-Fi and, if it is compatible and activated, mobile data through Verizon.
Before buying or activating a device, check its specifications for cellular capability and confirm eligibility with Verizon. A tablet bought elsewhere is not automatically compatible. Verizon’s connected-device plan FAQ describes tablet access to its 4G LTE and 5G networks for eligible devices and plans; actual service depends on the device and coverage at your location.
Connect a tablet to Wi-Fi
- Open Settings and select Wi-Fi. Menu wording may vary by tablet.
- Turn Wi-Fi on, then select your network from the list.
- Enter the network password and tap Join or the equivalent confirmation button.
- Open a webpage or app to check that the connection works.
Verizon’s Wi-Fi connection guidance covers the basic process for iOS and Android tablets. You need the Wi-Fi password for the router or network; a Verizon cellular plan is not required to use Wi-Fi.

Activate Verizon cellular service
Check the device and account first
Confirm that the tablet has cellular capability and is eligible for Verizon service. Then choose a plan path: Verizon lists connected-device plans for eligible account holders and a separate prepaid option for people bringing a compatible tablet. These are distinct offerings, so check the current terms and eligibility on the connected-device FAQ and prepaid tablet plan page rather than assuming one plan applies to both.
Follow the instructions for your tablet
Activation steps differ by model, SIM type, account, and plan. Verizon’s iPad cellular activation instructions describe a path involving an inserted SIM and Cellular Data being enabled. Adding a line to an existing Verizon account through that path requires an Account Owner or Account Manager.

eSIM instructions are more narrowly applicable. Verizon says to connect an eligible iPad to Wi-Fi before activation and notes that activation will not work outside Verizon coverage. Its iPad eSIM instructions apply to specified models and circumstances, including iPad Pro models from 2021 onward shipped without a physical SIM and certain older iPads on business accounts. Do not use those steps as universal instructions for Android tablets or other iPads; follow the instructions for the exact device.

Verizon’s connected-device FAQ lists tablet plan options named Welcome, Unlimited, and Unlimited Plus. The data and hotspot terms vary by plan, and existing or grandfathered plans may differ. The prepaid tablet page is a separate plan route. Plan names, allowances, pricing, eligibility, and coverage can change, so confirm the terms on the relevant live Verizon page or in My Verizon before enrolling.

For context, Verizon’s pages accessed in 2026 listed a 5 GB option on its prepaid tablet page and monthly allowances of 50 GB and 100 GB in its connected-device FAQ. Those figures describe specific listed offerings, not a universal allowance for every Verizon tablet line; check the pages for the current plan mapping and terms.
A tablet’s built-in mobile hotspot feature is different from a dedicated hotspot device or USB modem. Verizon says its listed tablet plans do not support dedicated mobile hotspot devices or USB modems. Whether a tablet can share its own connection, and how much hotspot data is included, depends on the tablet and the exact plan. Check the plan terms before relying on hotspot use. Coverage and network congestion can also affect performance, so a plan does not guarantee a particular speed or signal.

Compare plans on the terms that matter
- Eligibility and monthly cost: Check the account requirements and current price for the specific connected-device or prepaid option.
- Data terms: Confirm the allowance and any premium-data conditions rather than relying on a plan name alone.
- Hotspot use: Look for the included hotspot allowance and what happens after it is used.
- Network and location: Confirm compatibility and coverage for the tablet at the places you intend to use it.
- Streaming: Check any stated video-quality terms if streaming is important to you.
Troubleshoot connection problems
If Wi-Fi is not working
- Check that Wi-Fi is on and that the tablet is connected to the intended network.
- Re-enter the password if the network rejects the connection, and move closer to the router if the signal is weak.
- Restart the tablet, then disconnect from and reconnect to the Wi-Fi network.
- If the problem remains limited to this tablet, consider resetting its network settings using the device maker’s instructions. This can remove saved network details, and the exact menu path varies by model.
Verizon’s network-settings troubleshooting guidance recommends basic checks such as restarting and reconnecting, but its examples center on phones. Use your tablet’s own instructions for reset controls and menu names.
If cellular data is not working
- Verify that the tablet has cellular hardware and that its Verizon line and plan are active.
- Check that Cellular Data or the equivalent setting is enabled, following the steps for your model.
- For a SIM or eSIM activation problem, use the device-specific Verizon activation instructions or Verizon’s connected-device support overview.
- Consider whether you are outside Verizon coverage or experiencing local congestion; either can affect service.
If Wi-Fi works but cellular data does not, focus on activation, plan eligibility, cellular settings, and coverage. If neither connection works, troubleshoot Wi-Fi and cellular separately rather than assuming the plan is the cause.
