A plug-and-play turntable is safe for your records when its shipping restraints are removed, its tonearm is adjusted exactly as specified for the installed cartridge, and the output is connected to the correct input. “Plug-and-play” describes convenience, not a universal setup standard: some decks are factory-set, while others still require balancing the arm, setting tracking force, and fitting an anti-skate weight. Use the manual for your exact model before changing any adjustment.
What “plug-and-play” does—and does not—mean
Manufacturers use the term for turntables designed to minimize assembly and setup. One model may arrive with the cartridge aligned and the tracking force fixed; another may include a counterweight, a separate headshell, a belt, and an anti-skate weight that you must install. A built-in preamp may provide a line output, while a different deck may offer only phono-level output.
Those differences matter because tracking force, anti-skate, stylus care, and amplifier connections are not interchangeable between models. The safest rule is to treat the owner’s manual as the authority. The examples below illustrate common procedures, but they are not universal settings.
Before connecting anything
Identify the exact deck and cartridge
Write down the turntable model, the cartridge or stylus model, and whether the deck has a phono/line switch. If the cartridge was replaced, use the replacement cartridge’s published tracking-force recommendation together with the turntable maker’s adjustment procedure. A setting intended for a different cartridge can cause mistracking or unnecessary record wear.

Prepare a stable work area
- Use a sturdy, level surface that does not wobble when you operate the cueing lever.
- Keep the deck away from speakers, subwoofers, doors, and other sources of vibration.
- Leave enough room to lift the dust cover and reach the tonearm rest without touching the stylus.
- Keep the power supply disconnected while assembling parts and removing transport restraints.
Remove shipping protection
Transit screws, a tonearm spacer, a stylus guard, foam blocks, and platter restraints protect the mechanism during shipping. Remove only the restraints identified in your manual. The Fluance RT87 instructions, for example, call for removing transit screws and the tonearm spacer before operation. Leaving a restraint in place can prevent the arm from moving freely or transmit force into the record.
Step-by-step setup
1. Level and assemble the deck as directed
Adjust the feet or use the supplied level if your model provides one. Install the platter, belt, counterweight, headshell, and dust-cover parts only when the manual calls for them. Some decks arrive with the belt and cartridge already installed; do not disassemble a factory-set assembly merely to follow a generic checklist.
Hold the platter by its edges. Keep fingers away from the stylus and cantilever, the tiny tube that supports the stylus. If you must remove a stylus guard, place it somewhere clean where it cannot be crushed.
2. Balance an adjustable tonearm
For a deck with an adjustable counterweight, lock the tonearm in its rest, remove the stylus guard only if the manual requires it, and follow the model’s balancing sequence. Usually, you release the arm, turn the counterweight until the arm floats level, return the arm to its rest, and then set the force scale ring to zero without rotating the counterweight itself. The precise order and locking mechanism vary, so use the illustrated procedure for your deck.
A digital stylus-force gauge can verify the result when it is compatible with the cartridge height and turntable design. It is a verification tool, not a reason to override the manufacturer’s specified value.

3. Set the cartridge’s tracking force
Tracking force is the downward force the stylus applies to the groove. Set the value recommended for the installed cartridge, not a generic gram number. Cambridge Audio’s Alva TT V2 manual uses a stylus-force gauge to set its supplied cartridge to 2 (the manual’s stated setting). Other cartridges require different values.
The Fluance RT87 manual demonstrates why a universal number is unsafe:
| Cartridge listed for the RT87 | Tracking force in the RT87 manual |
|---|---|
| Ortofon 2M Blue | 1.8 g |
| Ortofon 2M Bronze | 1.5 g |
| Ortofon 2M Black | 1.5 g |
| Audio-Technica AT-VM95ML | 2.0 g |
These figures apply to the RT87 manual’s included counterweight and headshell; they are examples, not recommended values for another turntable or cartridge. Cambridge Audio notes that correct tracking force is important to performance and helps minimize record damage. Fluance similarly warns that an incorrect setting can cause skipping, distorted audio, and excess vinyl wear.
4. Set anti-skate using the deck’s own mechanism
Anti-skate, sometimes labeled bias, offsets the inward force that pulls the tonearm toward the record center. Ortofon explains that correct bias improves tracking and reduces record wear and distortion, but the ideal setting is also influenced by stylus shape and the record’s modulation.
Two common mechanisms illustrate why the manual matters:

| Mechanism | How to set it | Important limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Dial (Fluance Classic/Elite example) | Set the dial to match the tracking-force value, as the manufacturer instructs. | The dial’s scale and recommended relationship may differ on another model. |
| Hanging weight (Fluance RT87 example) | Place the thread in the notch specified by the RT87 cartridge table. | The table depends on the supplied counterweight and headshell. |
For the RT87, the manual assigns notch 1 to tracking forces below 1.6 g, notch 2 to 1.6–1.9 g, notch 3 to 1.9–2.2 g, and notch 4 to forces above 2.2 g. Those ranges are only for that RT87 setup. A factory-set deck may expose no anti-skate adjustment at all; do not add one or alter a fixed setting unless the manual explicitly permits it.

5. Choose phono or line output before connecting
Look for a phono/line switch, output labels, or a built-in preamp specification. The Alva TT V2 instructions distinguish the two signal levels:
| Turntable output | Connect to | Ground lead |
|---|---|---|
| Line output | A line-level input such as AUX, CD, or a line input on powered speakers | Use the model’s instructions; a separate ground connection may not be required in line mode. |
| Phono output | A receiver’s PHONO input or an external phono preamp, then the amplifier’s line input | Connect the turntable ground lead to the phono stage or receiver ground terminal when provided. |
Never connect line output to a phono input: the signal can be excessively loud and distorted. Do not connect phono output directly to a line input without a phono stage: the result will usually be very quiet and tonally unbalanced. Switch the deck and amplifier off while changing cables, and verify the actual labels on your equipment.
6. Start playback without dragging the stylus
- Place the record on the clean platter and select its speed, such as 33 or 45 rpm, according to the label.
- Unlock the tonearm and remove the stylus guard only when you are ready to play.
- Start the platter using the deck’s control.
- Move the tonearm over the lead-in groove while holding it by the finger lift, not the cartridge body.
- Lower the cueing lever and let the mechanism lower the stylus gently. Do not press the arm down with your hand.
- At the end, raise the cueing lever, return the arm to its rest, lock it, and replace the stylus guard if the manual recommends doing so.
If the arm misses the lead-in, raise it again and reposition it. Do not slide the stylus across a stationary record or platter.
Record and stylus cleaning
Brush the record before every play
Use an anti-static record brush as directed by its maker, including on apparently new records. Manufacturing debris and loose dust can be present before the first play. Hold the brush lightly, allow it to collect debris, and lift it away according to the brush instructions rather than grinding dust into the groove.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
Clean the stylus from back to front
Use a purpose-made stylus brush and move it from the rear of the cartridge toward the front, the same direction the record groove travels beneath the stylus. Never brush side to side or front to back, which can bend the cantilever. Fluance advises against chemical stylus cleaners and notes that Ortofon recommends against gel cleaners. Follow the installed stylus maker’s instructions if they specify a different approved method.
Clean the rest of the turntable safely
Wipe the plinth and dust cover with a clean, dry, lint-free cloth. Keep fluid away from the cartridge, motor, platter bearing, switches, and belt. A record-cleaning kit can be useful, but do not assume that every fluid is safe for every stylus, cartridge coating, or record surface.
How to prevent damage during normal use
- Keep the stylus guard on whenever the cartridge is not playing.
- Use the cueing lever instead of lowering the arm by hand.
- Handle records by the edge and the labeled area; avoid touching the grooves.
- Store records vertically in clean inner sleeves and keep them away from heat and moisture.
- Close the dust cover during playback if it does not transmit vibration to the deck; otherwise follow the manufacturer’s guidance.
- Stop playback if the stylus looks bent, the cantilever is loose, or the cartridge is visibly damaged.
Do not polish a damaged groove by replaying it repeatedly. A setup error can turn one mistracking pass into permanent wear.
Troubleshoot skipping, distortion, and hum
| Symptom | Checks to make first | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| Stylus skips or jumps | Stylus guard still fitted, incorrect tracking force, incorrect anti-skate, dirty or damaged record, dirty stylus, unlevel deck, or vibration from speakers | Stop the record. Verify the manual’s force and anti-skate procedure, level the deck, clean the record and stylus correctly, and move the deck away from vibration. Do not keep replaying the passage while diagnosing it. |
| Distorted or harsh sound | Tracking force, anti-skate, stylus or record condition, cartridge alignment, phono/line switch, and amplifier input | Confirm the cartridge specification and cable path. If using line output, select a line input; if using phono output, use a phono stage or PHONO input and connect ground as directed. |
| Very quiet, thin sound | Phono output connected to a line input or a missing phono stage | Move the cables to a PHONO input or insert an external phono preamp. Do not compensate by turning the amplifier to an extreme level. |
| Loud, overloaded, or boomy sound | Line output connected to a PHONO input | Use a normal line-level input and confirm the deck is set to line mode if it has a switch. |
| Persistent hum | Ground lead, cable routing, nearby power supplies, or an incorrect output mode | With equipment off, reseat the ground connection and signal plugs, separate audio cables from power adapters, and verify the manual’s phono/line configuration. |
Cambridge Audio’s skipping guidance specifically calls for checking the stylus guard, tracking force, anti-skate, record and stylus condition, level surface, and external vibration. For distortion, it also recommends checking the preamp and input configuration. If the problem remains after those checks, stop using the deck and contact the manufacturer or a qualified service technician rather than guessing at internal adjustments.

Factory-set designs
A genuinely factory-set turntable may have a non-adjustable tonearm, fixed tracking force, and no user anti-skate control. Your job is to remove shipping material, connect the correct output, and use the cueing mechanism. Changing a fixed counterweight or adding pressure to the arm can create the very wear you are trying to prevent.

Adjustable designs
An adjustable deck expects you to balance the arm and set force after assembly or cartridge replacement. Keep the manual and cartridge specification together. If the cartridge has been changed, recheck tracking force and anti-skate even if the previous cartridge played correctly.
Check what is actually included
Packages differ. Before buying accessories, inspect the box for a counterweight, anti-skate weight, belt, cables, stylus guard, bubble level, force gauge, or alignment protractor. The RT87 documentation illustrates a package with model-specific setup parts and an alignment protractor. A gauge or protractor is useful only when its dimensions and procedure match your deck and cartridge.
Maintenance and replacement decisions
Know when to replace a stylus
There is no single replacement-hour figure that applies to every stylus. Wear depends on stylus shape, tracking force, cleanliness, records, and use. Fluance directs owners to the stylus manufacturer for the recommended replacement interval. Replace sooner if the cantilever is bent, the stylus is visibly damaged, or correctly set tracking still produces persistent mistracking and distortion.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteReplace only compatible parts
Choose a replacement stylus, cartridge, belt, or alignment tool by exact model and compatibility, not by appearance. A replacement cartridge changes the required tracking force and may require a new anti-skate setting and alignment. Follow the cartridge maker’s installation instructions and protect the stylus during every adjustment.
Recheck after moving the deck
Transport can loosen a counterweight, shift a belt, or make a previously level surface uneven. After relocating the turntable, inspect the shipping restraints, confirm the platter spins freely, and verify force, anti-skate, and cable connections before playing a valuable record.
A final pre-play checklist
- Manual for the exact model and installed cartridge is available.
- Transit screws, arm spacers, and packing material identified by the manual are removed.
- Deck is stable and level; speakers and subwoofers are not shaking the surface.
- Platter, belt, headshell, counterweight, and anti-skate parts are installed as specified.
- Tracking force matches the cartridge recommendation; anti-skate matches the deck’s mechanism.
- Line output goes to a line input, or phono output goes through a phono input or preamp with ground connected as required.
- Record and stylus are clean, the stylus guard is removed only for playback, and the cueing lever is working.
- No skipping, distortion, hum, or visible stylus damage is present.
When a symptom appears, stop first and correct the setup before playing another record. Correct force, appropriate anti-skate, gentle cueing, clean surfaces, and the right signal path protect both the stylus and the grooves far more effectively than any generic “plug-and-play” preset.
